After well over an hour wating for food we said to cancel it. Rather than just saying OK, the staff member wanted to make this into a confrontation. Apparently we should have ordered food when we arrived, not later on. This place is a pub, by the way. It's not a restaurant. Weird.

I love this pub. It has such a nice atmosphere and the people working there are so lovely and welcoming. Food was also really good. I had the whitebait and for only £6 the portion was huge! Also met the chef who was just as lovely as the rest of them.

Me and some friends had a Sunday roast here. The staff were super friendly and the food was just out of this world. Lovely flavours and plenty on the plate for the money. Food options were displayed rather than on menu, but for a Sunday we had the roast option locked down. Plenty of roast choices on offer and sides. Atmosphere was great too for a Sunday afternoon. Visit this gem if you’re after the same.

We chose this place based on reviews and photos. I can say that is the best surprise of the day, food is genuinely home made! A great choice of Sundays Roasts with home made Yorkshire puddings with the roast. A nice add on of Mediterranean speciality, Portuguese fish stew, DELICIOUS! A nice variation from the classic fish & chips! This place is also freehouse, so good variations of IPA and Lagers. The owner is passionate and welcoming, service is great 😎 thanks U guys have made our day 👌and nice outdoor terrace

The pub itself is lovely, and the staff are friendly but the food was so disappointing. Didn’t expect or want it to be a ‘pile it high, sell it cheap’ place, and they had allowed us to do some swans but the portions for mains were really small. Most of the food was nice, but there were some weird issues, the table had two puddings with custard. One pot of custard has literally the consistency of milk, the other was the same but with lumps in it that looked like creme caramel. Had originally booked for a roast the next day as a celebration, but cancelled that as a result of Saturdays food.

We had really high hopes of this place, as we’re from Northampton and are regular visitors of their sister pub, The Lamplighter, which has never disappointed us. However, the food at the Greys was of average/poor quality with tiny portions. We ordered fish and chips and were served half the size fish you would usually expect to get. Peppercorn sauce we were served were We ordered pudding in the hope of it making up for our small an disappointing main, but we wished we hadn’t. Bread and butter pudding was more like a chocolate sponge cake, with extremely watery custard. Staff were very friendly (although didn’t ask us how our food was). Who we assume to be the chef coming out of the back kitchen had a glass of wine in his hand stumbling out the pub. Wouldn’t return. Wouldn’t return.

Very good grub was served for everyone - from pies to pork sticks to pasta and fish and chips. The spot is cosy and friendly and the food very good, but not cheap. The chef puts a lot of work into his product and its preparation. Delicious chips and tangy dips made the meal memorable. Don’t sit close to the door when it’s cold as you will be blasted every time someone goes in or out

Lovely friendly atmosphere, food was very good, pork belly was cooked to perfection all the veg was tasty although roast potatoes were not crispy, cauliflower cheese was delicious lots of gravy, we had rang the day before and preordered our food, but when we arrived at the pub the chef hadn’t been informed so there was only 2 pork belly dinners, a pork loin was offered in its place, which was very nice, those that had the beef said it was a little on the tough side, but enjoyed the roast, we will definitely be going there again.

Disgusting Sunday lunch We ordered the belly pork and gammon when it arrived. The belly pork was burnt and was placed upside down on the plate so we wouldn’t see the burn bit. The gammon was overcooked and small, and to be honest it looked like a piece of old tongue the roast potatoes were Anaemic and tough and the beetroot was roasted too long and was caramelising and burnt. What was astonishing is that when we complained we were given beef which was equally as bad. The guy we spoke to seem to smirk as we were explaining it was not good enough and offered to give us 50% off of food we were not interested in saving money we were only interested in pointing out the food was not up to standard. After this experience. We will not be going back again because basically if they had been apologetic and maybe had said it was not up to their usual standard etc then we would possibly understand however, the service was atrocious including the gravy ! Bland, sickly and definitely I’m not up to their usual standard. What a shame !!

Despite numbers dwindling over the past few years, Hanover still has a healthy number of pubs. The Greys used to be a music venue that punched above its weight in terms of people who played there but a number of changes of landlord saw it lose it’s way. However the sale to a private owner who had made it independent of any brewery has seen a period of stability where food in particular seems to have been really focused on. And the food was great. My green veg risotto was delicious and my partner’s pie was everything you want from a pie - crispy pastry filled with rich gravy and tender meat. The crumble we had for pudding wasn’t quite as standout as the main but still nice. Good selection of drinks behind the bar and friendly staff. It was a shame that it was pretty empty (was a Thursday night though) as there was a distinct lack of atmosphere which would have been sorted if it had been busier.

Unfussy (no daft 'themes' or frippery) freehouse at the top of a formidable climb. Good selection of great beers, promot service with a smile (although as it's Brighton it's London prices). Food looked lovely, I didn't have anything but the bangers'n'mash with onion gravy my brother had was very tempting, and a decent-sized portion too. Regularly featuring live music (we were there to see Mike Ross Band who were excellent) the sound was great and the atmosphere lively but not raucous. Hope to visit again next time we're in town.

Never heard of this place until a friend over coffee mentioned it for a good toast and frankly it was the best roast I’ve possibly ever had and the pudding was delicious too and worth every penny of £6 for a pudding. Dog friendly and even cooked a sausage for him. Friendly staff, trusting enough to have a table tab which is always a nice touch. Blackboard menu which I absolutely adore. This is a small venue - about 8 tables. We were given a table in the middle of the room, with staff having to pass constantly - none of who noticed that our food had not arrived an hour after we had ordered, despite bringing food for people who had arrived up to 40 minutes after us. When I followed up on this, a few more minutes passed before somebody came back to us with "oh, sorry - what was it you order? We'll get it done as soon as we can." At that stage we considered the chances of this establishment being able to produce a decent meal to be virtually nil, based on the poor organisation and service up to that point. Very much got he feeling that older customers are to be discouraged. Instead we went up to the top of the Hill (locals will know where) and met with a friendly, helpful staff who managed to fit us in for what proved to be a great roast, which helped salvage the afternoon. The only mark I can give the Greys is for the beer and wine, very good but a bit pricey.

We booked Sunday lunch on Easter Sunday. I'd already tried the ground floor bar on our last visit to Brighton and Loved it so, with the continuous good reviews, we tried the restaurant area. For us, we felt the upstairs really lacked atmosphere. We had our order taken quickly enough but it took 25 minutes for our bottle of wine to come, I was just about to leave when it arrived, and then another 20 for the food. The staff kept disappearing and there were many times there was just no one there. The table of 4 next to us arrived shortly after us and still hadn't had their food order taken 45 minutes in. My roast beef was good but my husband very disappointed with a small burger. It'll be a non return for us.

Visited The Greys again today after a few years away and we were very impressed with the quality & quantity of their Sunday lunches. The portion sizes were huge, the veggie/vegan options were excellent and our meat-eating friend said her roast chicken was delicious. Staff were welcoming & friendly despite it being very busy when we arrived. The food arrived quickly after ordering and was hot & tasty. Couldn’t fault anything - we were too full up after the main courses to sample any of the desserts but they also looked great. Booking is pretty much essential as only limited space in this small pub, although they do serve food until 8pm on a Sunday, assuming there’s anything left by then! Definite 10/10 for quality & quantity/value for money (£15 main course). Will be returning soon.

Visited this pub with some friends for a Sunday roast. The food was mediocre. Very bland overall with undercooked potatoes (got two on the plate ) and everything being extremely sweet almost too sweet to eat. The staff and the venue were absolutely lovely, they were really nice and we saw them interacting with other customers in the same manner - great convos and created a nice atmosphere for everyone. The food came out relatively quickly but we wouldn’t have minded waiting longer if the potatoes were cooked properly cause the ambience was so nice. Top Quality Roast in friendly, amiable place, hitting that sweet spot between gastro pub and chilled local. Booked a Sunday lunch here after hearing from a friend that this is her go too for Sunday lunch. Hanover isn't too short on either decent pubs or cracking Sunday roasts, so there is some stiff local competition. On booking, I asked if they could cater for a friend who was gluten free, soy free and vegan, and my child, who being on the spectrum with sensory processing challenges, was particularly important. The staff checked and were able to cater for all of us. Winner winner, Sunday dinner! On sitting down the pub wasn't too busy but did fill up. Inside is cosy without feeling cluttered. Little Sims playing in the background helped for a chilled out Sunday vibe. Perfect! The vegan Wellington was just super. Three massive roast potatoes, savoy cabbage, braised red cabbage, beetroot, carrots, roast parsnips and parsnip crisps, with 2 generous slices of Wellington in a flakey pastry. The gravy was served on the side, which I really liked, as it meant I could attempt to tempt my kid into trying an actual vegetable. And also because I'm a fussy bint with gravy placement! The entire portion was enough to place me in a very happy food coma. Really helpful with regards to my kids limited pallet, and as other autistic folk will attest, this is so important when enjoying a meal out. So appreciated the flexibility. We ordered some roast chicken and pale Yorkshires for her beige food requirements. The rest of the menu, dotted around the pub on chalk boards, looks equally good. This is definitely going to be my go to for a decent Sunday roast, and I so want to try the other offerings. We all said, we've not had a roast this good for a very, very long time. Thank you so much.

Although they did replace my meal, the veggie gravy they gave me was essentially a tomato soup, really awful.
