I love beer. This is a premium beer house. I am local, and love local people, and local beer. This has all of those things. Beer!!!!!! (P.S This establishment also has the longest burning red candle in the whole of Brighton)

One of the only gaffs I've found that has sky+ which is a godsend as a championship football fan. The landlady is incredibly accommodating and it's one of the few places with cheap guinness 0.0. Standard beers are also very reasonably priced for the location too.

This former hotel up a side-street near Brighton station is a dark horse, because The Edinburgh (or The Eddy to all familiar with it) has won not 1 but 2 Bravo awards, having been voted the best pub in Brighton 2 years running. The landlady Hatty tells me that she’s a bit of an old-school landlady, she even has a card system for curbing antisocial behaviour which she thinks has made the pub a far more pleasant place to come in her years in charge. That’s no mean feat considering The Eddy is predominantly a sports pub. There are 5 good sized screens throughout and it’s a source of pride that no matter where you sit you get a good view of a TV. Where The Eddy Brighton excels, and probably why the locals love it so much, is the unique events. Hatty and her sister Jess throw themselves into the production, Jess bringing her skills as a prop designer, and Hatty her hostessing, to create events to remember. Went to this pub last night for the first time with some friends for the football, was shushed by the landlady within minutes. It felt like an environment not curated specifically for sports fans. I wouldn’t say I’m a particularly rowdy football fan. I took a picture of the rules that are stuck to each table so you know what you are getting yourself into. There was a table in front of ours that clapped at one point in the game and the landlady came over in a flash and and shushed them too. Maybe no clapping should be added to the rules below. I can’t say it was my cup of tea and I won’t be going back however in the interest of balance it’s only fair point out all the other staff were very pleasant.

Jobsworth land lady who wouldn’t even let people clap during a football match, and has rules that include ‘no singing’ - my first and last time going to this pub! Felt like a pub where you are not allowed to have fun… The staff (other than the land lady) were all lovely. Update*** That response below says it all! Sweeping assumptions made by the horrid land lady and if you look online, I am not the first person with this opinion, she clearly can’t take criticism and has some issues, messy divorce perhaps. And guess what, it wasn’t me or any of my friends that clapped, it was another group… there are plenty of far better pubs in brighton & hove, awards mean f all to locals lol.

Ww were met at the door by the landlady (I believe), who initially said they were full, but then saw that there was space at the bar, so grudgingly allowed us in. I am not sure if she had had a bad day, but throughout the time we spent there, she had a proper face on. We had one drink and moved on. Also, she was vaping behind the bar, not the best look. The unbelievably rude and verbally/physically abusive landlady, Hatt Eaton, was so unpleasant to our (booked) table of 5 South African and French friends during the South Africa v France World Cup Rugby Quarter-final, that in the end we all left and went to the pub next door. And this, because one of our male French companions dared to celebrate a bit too loudly for her liking when France scored a try. I mean, it was one of the most exciting first halves of any Rugby World Cup seen thus far! Mon Dieu, give us a break. Apparently, cheering is not allowed in this establishment that widely advertised their sports screenings and encouraged bookings "to avoid disappointment". Patrolling her pub like a menopausal prison warden, she pounced on me instead - a local resident of 23 years, sporting my Springbok beanie and definitely NOT celebrating at that stage - and grabbed both my arms while stood towering over me (still seated as we'd already been belligerently admonished, before kick-off, that standing, too, was against "house rules"!). Digging her nails into my flesh, she (literally) spat into my face when I questioned her physical attack with "my house, my rules!", followed by further obscenities aimed at intimidating me to leave her (as she called it) "Bravo Award-winning Best Local". Well, I guess that explains the bitchy "bravado" and delusions of grandeur but sadly also diminishes the authenticity and validity of said awards in general. Respect to the poor young bar staff, though; like little rabbits in headlights, it seems this wasn't a first for them. Bless, please save them, someone! Suffice to say, after this blatant display of xenophobia, there followed a Franco-South African exodus . . . We can recommend the Duke of Wellington next door, though! They welcomed us with open arms, a fantastic atmosphere and lively hospitality. (And apparently, according to some locals, it was a regular occurrence for casualties to limp in here from next door, as strangers, or foreigners for that matter, were regarded with suspicion at The Eddy . . . why, because there is more than meets the eye, as rumours might suggest? One of my companions, a nurse practitioner, did observe that the landlady was perhaps not high on life.) We enjoyed a nail-biting second half of a brilliant game here at the Duke and will be back. The Eddy, however . . . never! Seems a bit old Hatt after all that.

Do NOT go here for to watch any sports! My French friends and I (South African) met at the Eddy (suggested by another friend as local to us all) to watch the Rugby World Cup quarter-final between South Africa and France. As soon as we arrived and were greeting one another (half an hour before kick-off), the landlady came (without introducing herself) to shout that we can't stand but should "sit down" as "those are the rules". Before the half-time whistle, us having just bought a second round of full drinks, France scored and one of my French friends banged on the table in excitement. The landlady rushed over and pounced on me (a South African supporter who WASN'T celebrating by banging on the table), and grabbed both my arms, digging her nails deep into my flesh, then spitting in my face "to stop banging on the table", shouting "my house, my rules!". Astounded, I asked her to let go of me, saying this was irrational behaviour and she clearly needed help, and she proceeded to tell me to f*ck off out of her pub as she "simply didn't like the look of me as soon as I walked in" ( 51 year-old mother of four, come on!). Suffice to say, we all left and went to the pub next door (Duke of Wellington), where they were very welcoming, as this was apparently not an unusual occurrence. As this incident in The Eddy qualifies as assault in front of witnesses, I will be taking this further with the police But be warned . . . the Fun Police is on duty at The Eddy! 🙄

The member of staff that asked us to leave was even more difficult as he tried to manhandle 1 of us to get them to leave, he was on crutches at the time. I visit bright quite regularly and lived there for 5 years, trying out many different pub roasts as there are a lot to choose from most are at the same price point but the food can differ drastically. The roasts at the Eddy has to be the best I have come across in Brighton, every element was cooked to perfection, melt in the mouth meat, crispy potatoes, and a huge Yorkshire with a delicious gravy to match. Another thing about the roast offeree is that you get a generous portion of sides greens, carrots, and cauliflower cheese when some pubs charge extra. The staff was great and very attentive asking if we need anything else and the chef came out to ask how the food was which was a nice touch and shows that he cares about the food he serves to customers. I would definitely recommend the Eddy and can't wait to come back again and maybe try the standard menu too.
