We live nearby to the Greyhound and have tried lots of things on the menu. Great to see a local pub preparing all their food on the premises with generous portions, and a balanced meal on offer. Favourite meals for our family that we order again and again are “build your own burger” and “build your own salad” (chicken and bacon our best combo- massive portion!). Other favourites that we come back to again and again are lasagne, shepherds pie, steak pie, chicken and leek pie. All very filling, tasty and generous portions. I’m pretty fussy about the quality of food I eat, and a meal at the Greyhound is a great night off from cooking for the family… Oh and don’t go past the waffle fries 🤤

Took my partner here for his birthday, thought it might have improved but it’s worse. Drinks arrived with ice despite ordering without it. Overlooked that. I had a roast chicken meal partner had nut roast. Mashed potatoes had a weird taste and were sloppy as was the cauliflower cheese (couldn’t eat it it was that bad) green beans were literally barely cooked, the carrots were ok. Chicken was too chunky and couldn’t eat it, gravy was lumpy and gelatinous, nut roast consisted of two tiny pieces. Spoiled totally by the off duty or ex staff who had one plate of chips among three of them talking loudly and using bad language and pushing each other off their chairs knocking over things. Also constant screaming and shouting by the owners small child in the bar. Couldn’t wait to leave really. Having tried this 3 times now we won’t try a fourth unfortunately.

Just returned from our evening meal, Which we were looking so forward to, We read the reviews prior to going, We ordered soup prior to our main meals, Which was Lamb Jennings , Which was O K, My wife ordered the Fish and chips, Which was terrible the chips were like cardboard, obviously cooked several times, The fish was just batter, Terrible, We were holidaying in the area, The Bill was nearly 70 pounds, with wine and Guinness, Obviously we weren't expecting first class food, However we were expecting edible food, We did express our views to the very pleasant young waitress, Who said she was very sorry. However, nothing from the management, A very disappointing experience. We paid and left with a very nasty taste in our mouths, Never again.

We visited as a group of 9 (two families), and I have to say that it’s up there with the best pub grub I’ve ever had! After almost 17 years of living in Cumbria, and driving past this pub every weekend after a walk in Keswick but never going in, this may just be our new favourite place for lunch on a Sunday afternoon. On arrival it was clear that the pub was extremely busy- but we hadn’t booked a table. The young lady who served us appeared to be the only member of staff working other than the chef, and despite her being run off her feet she couldn’t have been happier to see us and more attentive. She found us a nice little table in the front room, we where sitting next to one family who complained the whole time and were extremely rude to the poor girl after having to wait ‘half an hour’ (ten minites 🤣) for her to take there order on arrival. We felt like we had been going in for years, we were treated like family, as was everyone else it appeared. We were delighted to see that this was reciprocated by what seemed to be regular customers, who called her by name and one man even helping her by collecting stray glasses left on the outside tables, as she hadnt had time to do this. Our food was absolutely wonderful, home cooked steak pie and chips and I wasn’t as hungry so had a Jacket potato with cheese and beans, very reasonably priced. After finishing our food and the place quieted down a bit, the chef came out and greeted us all as if we were his friends, then sat down with the locals for a while until someone else ordered food so he hurried back to get that cooked for them. We can wholeheartedly say we’ve never been anywhere with such a wonderful atmosphere, friendly staff and beautifully cooked food. We will certainly be back!

Food was nice…. When we eventually got it 2 hours we waited then eventually when they got round to do our order they told us they didn’t have enough burgers never asked how we wanted our stake cooked or gave us a stake knife so had to hack at it with a butter knife no sauces with the stake. So then we had to wait another 10 min for them to cook it. They never offered us a free drink or anything for our wait. It’s a good job we were just passing by and we won’t be back.

A cracking pub with a good range of ales and food. My girlfriend has a dairy intolerance and often finds eating out a fairly boring experience due to limited menus, however the vast majority of food here is suitable for her diet and is really tasty; the portions large and prices perfectly judged. As an real ale bore I love that their beers are spot on and those working there take an interest in keeping it well and having variety. If a pub doesn’t have good beer it doesn’t have anything and I’m very pleased to say this place has it in bucket loads. Top notch.

First time we have been to a pub in over a month due to lockdown, was looking forward to our first meal out. The lady on arrival was very friendly and helpful, just disappointed with the food, while the portions were large I did find a large dark hair in my food, I didn’t mention this as I felt bad, we were the only ones in the pub and it’s difficult for small businesses in these times. The food was tasteless and dry. A real shame as I think it could be a great place with the right chefs in there. However we wouldn’t return.

Stopped here for lunch on Sunday. English country pubs are famous for their Sunday lunches, the place looked OK, and the reviews were good. What a disappointment. The meal was at best average and the service on a par with that.I'm thinking it's all freezer food because it was tasteless and bland and was served too quickly to be home cooking. In these difficult times, it's tough enough for the hospitality trade, so when custom comes knocking, the least you can do is provide decent food.We passed a few other places after this place..if only we hadn't been so quick out of the traps with this one.Maybe we were unlucky judging from other reviews but both main meals were just not good at all. It's as hard to make really poor food as it is good (we weren't expecting Michelin quality) so why do the kitchen and management think that what they served up was acceptable?Honestly, give this one a miss and keep chasing the hare. There is definitely better elsewhere...https://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/ShowUserReviews-g499568-d1881430-r777692396-The_Greyhound_Inn-Wigton_Cumbria_England.html#

We were staying nearby and went here for a meal to meet some of my husband’s cousins and their families. It’s a very ordinary looking pub from the outside and maybe a little dated inside, but ok.We ordered our meals which included three children’s meals, 4 curries (different curries, it was apparently curry night) and four orders of fish and chips. We seemed to wait a long time until two of the children’s meals then the fish and chips came. After another long wait, the curries came, one at a time. When the last one arrived, those having fish and chips were at least half way through their meals. We had to ask for the final child’s meal which was only a portion of chips! The fish and chip meals were quite satisfactory I gather but the curries were very disappointing. As it was curry night we’d expected something ‘homemade’. If they were made on the premises, they used cook in sauces (and not the best). There were no ‘side’ dishes except a very poor naan bread which was more like a pitta bread. There were plenty of big chunks of chicken in my ‘Balti’ but it could have been anything. I’ve had better curry dishes from the ‘take always’ in supermarkets.Service wasn’t ‘with a smile’. No apology for the long wait. They started clearing dishes when some on the table were still eating. No one asked if we wanted desserts. When we asked for desserts (I think it was just the children) the staff clearly weren’t happy and made it obvious they wanted us gone. This was at a time still within the hours they state they actually serve food. Prices were reasonable although for the quality of the curries I feel they were overpriced. There is disabled access into the building but I’m not certain about the toilets: I didn’t use them and my husband can’t remember! I’d probably only have given an overall score of 2 but those having fish & chips seemed happy with their meals. We won’t be returning - disappointing because it’s only a few miles from where we’re likely to be staying from time to time and quite central for the others to meet there.

I was very disappointed as when my chicken dinner came I didn't get notified before ordering that there wasn't any mash potatoe so it would be boiled potatoes, the roast potatoes were very hard as were the carrots. To finish off a weeks holiday, my friend and I went into the Greyhound Inn for a meal. We both ordered the meat grill which consisted of: rump steak, a 10oz gammon steak, a Cumberland sausage, chips, fried egg, a slice of pineapple, grilled tomato, mushrooms and peas. It cost £22.95 each, but was worth every penny. The food was hot and it came on warmed plates, which makes so much difference. The staff were friendly. We couldn't manage to eat all of it, so asked if we could take the remainder with us. The waitress put it in a plastic tub for us. After being on the road for an hour myself and my partner decided to stop here for tea. We ordered nachos to start and what came out was a bowl of doritos with a low quality cheese melted on it. No sour cream, no salsa, no guacamole. Instead we was given bbq sauce and sweet chilli, I know I'm from the city but that isnt nachos. £5 for crisps and cheese. We asked for any other sauces and the waitress wasnt the most pleasant she didnt even come over to the table to address us instead she stood at the kitchen door and said no only mayo. I'm ok for mayo and crisps. Safe to say we didnt eat it and when other waitress came over to take the plate which was full she didnt ask if the food was ok. Then the mains came out which was steak pie mash and veg and a chicken and leek pie which was a special. I've never seen a pie that dry in my life clearly been sat there all day and reheated. Not a drop of gravy inside. Mash was lumpy and our veg was spouts and a few peas. They also went back, the waitresses didnt even seem bothered not an ounce of customer service between them. With the crisp starter and dry pie main we asked for the bill and sent the food back. Only to be told by the owner the pie wasnt dry when he didnt even see it.another example of bad customer service.

Myself and 3 family members (and baby) wanted somewhere for a pub lunch, we knew we were cutting it fine as it was 1.30pm. I rang ahead and asked what time they stopped serving lunch. The man on the phone said 2.30pm. We arrived at 2pm. While I appreciate as a retail worker it's very annoying when customers come in last minute, we were greeted with a very grumpy look. I asked for a table for 4 and the lady said I'll have to check, we stop serving at 2pm. I said I rang ahead and they said 2.30? (still no smiles from the lady) she said to choose a table. There were no lights/music/place settings.

Went for lunch recently. Friendly staff, good prices and excellent beers. I chose badly with a brie and bacon sandwich that wasn't great but the others all enjoyed their meals.

Really friendly staff, excellent beer and huge servings of really tasty food, what’s not to like? If that wasn’t enough, they welcome dogs and bring water bowls for canine guests. If you want a good pub, with good food you can’t go wrong.

My son and I went out for Sunday lunch - our intention was to go to another recommended place nearby. However, there was a half an hour wait to get in there so as time was limited, we went to the Greyhound.

I visited The Greyhound on Friday 31st August with my husband and teenage son. The staff were super friendly on arrival and had reserved us a nice corner table. The young waitress was super friendly. Food arrived within 15 minutes and was delicious. The home cooked chips were gooooood! I can recommend the steak pie. Proper home cooked, not the usual dish of brown with a puff pastry lid on top! My son had the kids chicken goujons and they appeared to be freshly made with 'proper' batter, not out of a packet, and it was a huge portion. Despite being full, my hubby and I shared a sticky toffee pud and my son had a whole sticky choc pud to himself. Would definitely recommend for food and a pint!

Renting a cottage very close by we had to pop in and try this establishment for a bite to eat. We popped in at 6pm on a Sunday evening and it was so busy they didn’t have a table for us until 7.30pm - good start! Husband didn’t mind he could start on the local beer!

Went here for something to eat after a walk at Bassenthwaite Lake. Read previous reviews so booked in advance for an evening meal, which are served from 5pm. Right from entering we were given a lovely warm welcome. Everyone was attentive, polite and friendly. It is extremely dog friendly too. We took our dog who was wet from the rain. He was greeted with his own bowl of water and a chew. The huge portion meals were delicious (Half Chicken and Steak Pie) and very filling. Would have liked to try the desserts but too full! We would definately return and would highly recommend!

After asking if they had Sunday dinners they said yes. Ordered 4 and then they came back saying no Yorkshire puddings we could have extra roast potatoes so that was fine. All veg on the plate was lukewarm I asked for mine heated up with 3 roast potatoes. Not any extra. Fair to say all of us left still hungry we definitely wouldn’t recommend it.

After a Saturday afternoon drive in the Lake District, we sought a nice quiet pub for an early evening meal and found The Greyhound Inn fulfilled our wishes nicely. Not being sports fans, we wanted to avoid the cup final and whilst a small group of friendly locals were watching the game, we were able to be seated far enough away as to not hear the television.

Only open Friday, Saturday and Sunday evening's. Booking is advisable. Brilliant food of the best quality, friendly and accomodating staff. This is a small place where everyone speaks to everyone. Friendly and social atmosphere. Family run. Can't praise them enough. We go regularly and have never had a bad meal. Tip....if they are full, try their pub in Abbeytown!

I've lived in the area for 25 years and have driven by this pub many times when travelling on the A595. I'm not sure why I've never stopped here. I should have! My first visit was a few days ago with friends, we all enjoyed the food, the good real ale and the friendly and efficient service. Reasonably priced and all very clean and tidy, I heartily recommend this place.

We came in for Lunch today and want to start off by saying that the location is idyllic, the food is delicious and most of the staff are wonderful. However, our meal was completely bulldozed by one member of staff (don’t know her name, elderly, black hair, heavy makeup). Not only would she not leave us alone for the duration of our meal which was very off putting, she proceeded to try to force feed me mushy peas using a dirty spoon off of the floor. At the end of our meal we were sitting and enjoying our drinks when she then took them from our table, we were considering getting coffees but felt very pressured to leave after such disastrous service. We are honestly embarrassed for you at No 1, that kind of behaviour was not very becoming at all…. What would have been the perfect meal out ended up being a complete nightmare.

Stayed for one night, all the staff were friendly and helpful, the room was spacious, clean , light and comfortable with an excellent bathroom. Breakfast was very good with an excellent choice of freshly cooked food, cereals, pastries and fruit. Will definitely return and would certainly recommend staying here

We called in just for drinks shortly after the pub opened for the evening, having read through the menu we wished we were eating there instead of elsewhere. The landlord was super friendly without being too much. He had lots of tips for restaurants to eat in Cheltenham. We will definitely be calling in again and for a longer visit.

Over priced! £11.95 for toasted sandwich that came with small side salad, small pot shop bought coleslaw and handful chips. Had bacon and brie filling with so much cranberry it tasted more like jam sandwich. With a coffee each bill came to £33. Most costly lunch I've had for ages. Won't be rushing back.

Down in Worstead on wee business trip, asked about possibility of lunch nearby and were directed to the White Lady. It was around 14:30 on a Sunday afternoon so expectations weren't too high (would have settled for a sandwich...). Friendly welcome, assured food would be no problem and we're given 3 menus! We're invited to sit anywhere we chose so opted for window seat in dining area to rear. We both opted for Sunday roast topside. Absolutely fantastic. Beef cooked to perfection, awesome roast potatoes and Yorkshire pud, came with glazed chantenay carrots, buttered green beans and zingy red cabbage, jug of lush gravy and topped of with dish of unctuous Cauliflower and cheese (each by the way). Thinking about making the 3 hour drive again just to have that experience again.
