Easy walking distance from Cromford Mills, this pub has an excellent menu and serves food all day. We arrived early afternoon for a late lunch, were greeted promptly at the bar, bought drinks on a tab, given menus, advised about table service and allowed to pick our own table – all simple things but so often ignored or badly performed. We tried the steak from the fixed price lunch menu and pie of the day from the main lunch menu. Both were excellent as was the service throughout our stay. We even left a tip – not common for travellers from Australia on a budget. Recommended.

We decided to eat at the Greyhound after visiting the Cromford Mill and learning about the history of the Greyhound Hotel which was built by Sir Richard Arkwright as a place for his guests to stay in the 18th Century. It was early evening so the restaurant was not too busy. We had choice of areas to eat and chose the dining room. The menu had a good variety and I chose the Steak and Ale pie. My husband had the chicken curry. Both were that day's specials. The portions were excellent and the pie was one of the best I have had - the pastry just melted as you ate. The staff were friendly and helpful. All in all a lovely meal!

Myself and my partner have had a few days away staying in Cromford and visited the Greyhound twice for food and drinks. We enjoyed the atmosphere, the lovely food and helpful staff members- we recommend the pizza which is cooked in an authentic pizza oven. The addition of the games available to play were a great too- plenty to choose from- cards, chess, jenga and more! Overall a lovely friendly pub to visit.

Worth a visit with good service and a delicious and wide ranging menu, including a kids menu. Also a selection of real ales. Be aware that the parking isnt only out front by small parade of shops, but also to the rear. It is quite expensive however which is why it loses a mark.

We were staying in the area and were recommended this pub for a meal. We had been for a drink the day before. No table service at all (which is strange as the pub wasn’t that busy), and had to queue at the bar for a long time. I think the only time I have ever queued that long and had such slow service is at an extremely crowded bar in London. The young servers behind the bar clearly did not want to be there, serve anyone and we actually found them dismissive and quite rude. The roast was a waste of money in my opinion. The meat speaks for itself (this was the lamb shoulder - various people commented on the style of this. It looked and tasted like something out of a tin). We asked the waitress what this was, and she sort of laughed and went in to ask the chef. We still don’t quite know what it was. The vegetables honestly felt like they were microwaved from a packet. I am not a gravy person but had to pour it all over my plate to get any flavour. The general dinner menu looks really good, so maybe this would have been a better option (maybe this isn’t a roast place!) but I did find the whole ordeal a bit bland and cold.

After a 3-hour walk, we hoped for a good meal at The Gray Hound, but it was a nightmare. We stood at the bar for 15 minutes to get served—no table service at all. Then we waited a ridiculous 55 minutes for our food, which was horrendous—cold, bland, and not remotely worth the wait. To top it off, we were charged an outrageous £27 for one meal and one drink. I’ll be sharing pictures to prove this place deserves only 1 star. Avoid it at all costs!

The service was good, but the food was very poor. The gammon was clearly reheated, but staff said it was freshly cooked that morning. The meat was so dry it was like straw. I'm definitely not returning. Overall, it was disappointing.

On holiday for a week in Cromford with family. Ate here twice as a group of nine. Excellent service. Children’s menu good; steak cooked to perfection (medium rare and well seasoned). Would highly recommend the ‘pie of the day’ and also had a personally made cocktail which was lovely. Service was friendly but not imposing and staff also helped with information on local services. Lovely experience. 10/10

I visited yesterday evening with friends. There was a good choice on the menu. The very young staff members were working very hard without support from older management. There had been two events on in the town and we think additional staff should have been factored in. Unfortunately, two thirds of our order was forgotten so the people who ordered burgers received and ate their meal before the pizzas arrived. Then one of our pizzas was sent to the wrong table. Due to having to leave we cancelled that pizza and asked for a refund. The “lady” who gave us a refund was extremely rude and did not apologise for the mix up or offer any compensation. The young lads who had been very apologetic for the mistake they had made apologised again as we left whereas the “lady” ignored us. The food was excellent and the service of the younger staff was also very good. It’s a shame your more mature member of staff let the whole experience down.

My family fell in love with this establishment and the wonderful village of Cromford. We wish we had spent more days in this area exploring all the other beautiful places close by. The owners were so helpful and the food was excellent. Their room prices and pub prices are very reasonable. We had the only family room, our teenager was delighted with the separate room to at they stepped down into, it was very cozy.

We booked a table for 4 people for Sunday lunch at 4.30pm.we we're told that food service ended at 6pm. Menus were brought to the table and the waitress informed us that they had run out of Yorkshire puddings!. A bit disappointing. We waited for someone to take our order to be told that we needed to order at the bar. As there were no Yorkshire puddings I asked if we could have cauliflower cheese instead which wasn't a problem. Our meals came small portions no stuffing certainly not worth £18.50. We felt that they gave us what they had got left, 2 roast potatoes no mash. We certainly wouldn't recommend this.

Ordered a £25 lamb meal was brought what can only be described as a measly bit of tough tasting meat and a bit of mash potato. With a teaspoon of non tasting sauce. I think they think they are a bling bling restaurant. Think they should just stick to pub grub and sort there prices out for what you get is terrible

We didn’t stay in any rooms and came only for food. The previous owners, whilst charging high prices for food, always delivered excellent food and service. This has now changed, there is no table service now, you have to join a long queue at the bar. There were only 2 staff in the bar which was completely inadequate for the amount of customers in the pub although they were friendly. The food quality was not great and pretty tasteless which is a shame as before it was one of the nicest places to eat in the area.

Stayed previously before new owners and was fantastic. I am hoping they are just finding their feet as this is a lovely hotel and location . The room a was clean and tidy however was up a number of flights of stairs and small for 2 adults and a dog also the glass window looking into the bathroom from the bedroom is a little bizarre. So there was no privacy Breakfast was nice, a point would probably be have bacon and not the thick steak as it was extremely fatty and couldn’t be eaten. Which wasn’t included in the price of the stay. It wasn’t mentioned at the time as the dining area was busy When checking out we weren’t asked how our stay had been and would have highlighted the above points then. The stay wasn’t particularly cheap and was for a birthday break. So quite disappointing I hope this review comes across as constructive as stated it’s a lovely hotel and may just be settling down time

Only live ten minutes away so thought we would go and check out The Greyhound as had seen it was under new management. Came with the intention of a few drinks and ordering food. Just my opinion but… walked in and were met with children in the bar area at 6pm. These were not seated eating, just wondering around and calling out for parents. Now this is just not for me, I am not a fan of children in a bar area when there are other places they could be sat out of the way. We ordered drinks at the bar, no issues there though my wine could have been better chilled but we were not asked if we would like to see a menu to try to up sell food. Salt, pepper and vinegar on the tables but no menus on there? Perhaps there was no food available or they were fully booked for food? Unlikely though as only half a dozen people in there during our visit. We chose to sit where we have sat for years, where the Chesterfield sofas are located but I have to say the absolutely huge tv on the wall, a discarded pushchair and a broken wingback chair in the corner just made me feel a little bit sad. I fully understand the new management taking the opportunity to get customers in by showing sport especially now there is no Bell just up the hill who used to provide this. But… no music to create any atmosphere or cover the noise of children, just men on the tv programme talking about the golf?? Can’t the tv screen be on but only with sound when relevant? Bar staff or manage t need to read the room in these situations. So we didn’t stay to eat, just had one drink and drive up the hill to Wirksworth instead to another one of our ‘local pubs’ will give it a couple of months before we bother again. It’s a shame really as I love the building and where the pub is and over the years have enjoyed some great food here but there was no atmosphere or welcome here which is a shame.

We booked a family room for a Sat night. The room was large, with a separate sleeping area for our 15 year old. The room is a little tired, with one of the plug damaged, but it was very clean. Bed was very soft. Nice touch with the chocolates. It was a little noisy as we were above the bar, but this all quietened down after closing time and didn't really disturb us. The breakfast was very good and served quickly. Would stay again.

Decided to come here for Friday night dinner as I wasn’t in the mood the cook & I know it has recently changed hands so I was curious. It’s such a wonderful building with great history and deserves to be enjoyed. Inside looked very similar with the addition of the huge flat screen for sports they are now showing. It had more of a pub feel than before. It is a big space & in my opinion lacks atmosphere…maybe not when the football is on. Upon arrival, I advised I booked a table for two & was then pointed to a couple of different areas & told to choose a table, we were brought menus & told to order at the bar. I ordered the jerk chicken burger & my partner ordered the Cromford burger, I ordered half a bass & some water, he a glass of red. It was a good bass but no water. Our food didn’t take long to arrive & looked ok, the coleslaw was very mayo -y which I’m not a huge fan of so didn’t eat much. I stole an onion ring off my partner as they looked awesome & tasted great great., the chips were good and burger buns. The sauce in my burger was nice but I didn’t get any jerk seasoning on my chicken. It was almost a plain chicken breast cooked & plonked into the bun. I took it out & shredded it but there was no real flavour sadly so I tried to add the sauce to it. My partner said his burger was good but as the mushroom was grilled (I assume as it held water) as soon as he bit into it, it just oozed water, which wasn’t pleasant in a bun. The onion rings were amazing, the burger was a little over done but good quality. Food was ok, as was the service, a bit mixed & inconsistent across the staff members. I am local so will return.

Slightly apprehensive to eat here as the female bar staff seem so new and unprepared/inexperienced (not a criticism - we were aware the restaurant hadnt long reopened). However, the bar accepted us as a late entrance for food (7.30 arrival). Given until 7.45 to order, which was ample time. We saw some delicious food served to other tables whilst we waited. We decided on the burgers. They were cooked to perfection. Homemade coleslaw, chunky chips and sweet potato fries were the same standard. Definitely recommend eating here.

I understand that this venue is under new managment so I feel that I need to be both constructive but also point out whats going very wrong here.My family of 4 booked for dinner - were seated and drinks and order taken. Our meals arrived and I can only say that the lasange was burnt to a crisp.Black in fact, the chicken and chirizo was very overcooked and a mass of cheese was used on the pizza. My scampi was hot but the chips and mushy peas were stone cold. Going back to the lasange. I asked for the top to be removed and was told it was being re-cooked. OK the other 3 start our mediocre food. The lasange never arrives. 2 our party have to leave as we had tickets to an event nearby. 2 stayed. We sit for over 25 mins with on one coming over to see us then the waitress/manager (not really sure what her role was). She asked has it not arrived?- obviously not. By this time as you can imagine I was getting quite annoyed. 2 things....1. Everyone understands that things can and do go wrong but please keep your customers informed (this saves alot of stress on both sides) and 2. If you are just starting a new venture slim it right back and make sure you can deliver what you are actually selling and ensure that product is of a very high standard as your prices are not cheap. Also just not charging us for a meal which never arrived is very poor customer service.Reverse the roles and think again what might have been acceptable to you. £64 is not great value for rubbish food and very sub standard service.By the way my daugther left without a meal and I have to go back home to make her a sandwich before we joined our family. Not the lovely evening meal we had planned.Maybe just keep this to a bar only.Sadly the worse place I have ever been.

This hotel bar and ", restaurant" took a booking without information which included no food. Not even breakfast and charged 190 for just bed , one person two nights . I was the only guest staying because our boiler had broken down and I needed a warm room and a bath. I was the only guest. Only told no food when I arrived . Was told the heating had been put on in the room half an hour beforehand. I seriously doubted this it was cold. No hot water from the bath taps, had to put clothes back on and go downstairs to be shown I had to run the hot tap first in the sink. Excuse "this is an old property". The general shabbiness of the carpets and decor gave that away. Door to my "upgraded" room wouldn't close (door hinges), In the end it was so bad I checked out the same evening - this was met with "so what have you used in the room?" (Does it matter, they were getting paid for full use of it- I explained I'd only used the bathroom. The proprietor despite having been fully paid appeared most put out that I was leaving almost immediately.. I felt uncomfortable by his attitude and made excuses, said nothing wrong with the room (there was) but I just wanted to get out of there In my opinion the reviews I saw near such little resemblance to my experience I question their sources. I'm writing this to seriously dissuade anyone from staying here - it's expensive to the point of feeling ripped off really.

We didn't stay here, we came here for lunch and excitedly ordered two of the Warm Butternut Squash, Toasted Seeds & Quinoa Salads. We asked how large the small and large versions were and told the small was starter size so we went for the large at £14.00 for a main meal. Unfortunately, what came resembled a starter. There must have been minimal preparation for this in the kitchen. About half a dozen cm square pieces of Butternut Squash pan fried, about a table spoon of Quinoa and I was lucky if I found three toasted pine nuts in there, all on top of a straight out of the bag loose leaf salad with half of a loosely chopped baby gem underneath. As a vegetarian I really hate paying prices similar to those of a fully cooked meat dish but the quantity, quality and amount of work gone into the meal is minimal and very poor. Certainly not worth £14 each for a small and poor salad. My wife wouldn't let me say anything at the time as there were people on a nearby table. When we left we had to pop across the road for a snack to eat! Doubt we will choose here again for lunch.

Heating was put on in evening after I complained but it never came on in morning and I woke up cold. Came down for breakfast and the room was cold . Cooked breakfast was good & great sausage. The hotel needs a total refurb top to bottom in reality. However a cleaning blitz and then daily attention to detail in cleaning & a few changes of tired furniture would really help. Shame tbh as I much prefer older hotels.

Friendly welcome and easy checking in. Beautiful room with large, comfortable king size sleigh bed. Room was spacious with views out onto main square. Nice extra touches in room, bottled water, coffee machine, biscuits, crisps and local made chocolates. Breakfast was included, good choice of cereals, toast and cooked options. We opted for the full English and it was delicious. When staying in the area, we would definitely stay here again.

Nice food. Place tries to be posh and the food is lovely but when you have staff with massive love bites it slightly puts you off the expensive pints. Wouldn’t rush back.

Booked here for a three night stay on the basis that Booking.com gave it a 8.2 Very Good assessment. How that rating has been achieved beggars belief. On arrival the place was deserted apart from a man on the phone in the doorway who turned out to be the receptionist: phone call obviously more important than guests. The whole ground floor area has an air of neglect and shabbiness. The carpet on the staircase to the floors above can only be described as filthy. Bedroom absolutely dismal: no charm, tired old furniture and a grubby carpet. New shower room but basin was cracked and mould on the shower mat. Had to wait several minutes for any hot water to appear. Hotel is on a busy road which leads to a quarry. Very large HGVs running by throughout the night. Not the hotel's fault but we could not close the outside sash windows which are encrusted with dirt (there is secondary glazing) to deaden the sound. As a result a very poor nights sleep. Dinner was acceptable but portions rather small for the price. Dining area as dismal and uninviting as the rest of the establishment. Breakfast was okay apart from awful coffee. Finally there are too many 'rules' which are rammed home. There is a 'curfew' during the week on the booking literature of 11pm. However, on arrival we were told that it was 10pm - miss that and you are locked out! What on earth is in the mindset of the management - are they in the hospitality industry or not? Being so disappointed at the depressing accommodation we left after the first night. Never ever done that before. The hotel inhabits a great Georgian building: such a pity that its obvious potential has been ignored. The owners would benefit from a visit by Alex Polizzi, The Hotel Inspector.

My wife and me,my cousin and hubby, brother and wife plus family friend stopped here overnight 2nd Sept, 3 doubles plus a twin room. Grade 2 listed building so don't expect the Ritz etc. Some parts and furnishings need sorting, especially a good clean of every carpet, we all agreed the little things spoiled the finished article, like white paint spashes on black floors, but nothing to put you off, very clean rooms dining and general areas inc, toilets, Beds are soft as are pillows, Parking could be tricky, but re-move if need be later on, Food is on an upmarket menu and definitely cooked to order,as is breakfast. Very good indeed, Check menu on their Web as it might not suit all staying. Very hospitable staff. Price wise £115 per room Inc breakfast plus £20 per night doggie charge as extra. Have no complaints at all stopping here, ideal for Chatsworth house as we had been to the the country show there for 2 days. Total bill £430.00 for 4 rooms b&b, plus 7 meals and bar bill £220.00 Well worth a try,

Couldn’t ask for a more friendly, hospitable host like the owner/manager of The Greyhound Hotel and his lovely staff. Myself, my mum and our dog checked in to be greeted by a lovely barman who was polite and friendly. The dog friendly room was spotless and ideal sized for a 1 night stay for the pair of us and furry companion. Modern bathroom with necessary amenities. Meticulous standards of cleanliness throughout. Bar / restaurant both clean, modern but homely feel with a great stocked bar. Gorgeous breakfast - nothing too much trouble. The hotel is perfectly located, albeit by a busy junction though the noise was excluded perfectly when the windows are closed. We had a short taxi ride to Matlock Bath for evening meal after a long day hiking to see the Black Rock tourist attraction. Hands down, cannot fault the establishment or the hospitality at The Greyhound. We would highly recommend to future visitors and will definitely return! We cannot thank you enough. From Jane, Rhiann & Lexi the dog :)

Attended at Bank House today. Initially walked in to not be acknowledged at all. Had to ask a waitress where the toilet was as they would not speak to us. Then when going to order, I was stood at the bar area with my partner for approximately 10 minutes without being acknowledged again. The server behind the bar was called Tara and she was extremely rude. We then left and went to a cafe further down the hill where they had amazing service and lovely food. Definitely recommend people to go to the new cafe next door go outdoors!!

We had a lovely evening meal here. My wife really enjoyed her Pasta main course and I had the Baked Cod in Parsley sauce. They were both delicious and really felt like proper "home cooked" food. The service was excellent and the pub had a really nice vibe.

Great vibes in the pub. Got there as they opened and the hospitality was fantastic. I ordered a coffee and they got the coffee machine up and running straight away. Service was friendly and coffee was very nice and affordable. Came with a nice biscuit as well. We just used the hotel as a pub as a meeting point to start our stag do. There was a couple ordering food which looked great also. Beer was great and there was darts and a foosball table! 10/10 establishment
