Stayed previously before new owners and was fantastic. I am hoping they are just finding their feet as this is a lovely hotel and location . The room a was clean and tidy however was up a number of flights of stairs and small for 2 adults and a dog also the glass window looking into the bathroom from the bedroom is a little bizarre. So there was no privacy Breakfast was nice, a point would probably be have bacon and not the thick steak as it was extremely fatty and couldn’t be eaten. Which wasn’t included in the price of the stay. It wasn’t mentioned at the time as the dining area was busy When checking out we weren’t asked how our stay had been and would have highlighted the above points then. The stay wasn’t particularly cheap and was for a birthday break. So quite disappointing I hope this review comes across as constructive as stated it’s a lovely hotel and may just be settling down time

Really good Sunday lunch at the Greyhound, nice portion size and reasonably priced. A great place to watch the football unfortunately Arsenal lost but the lunch was still excellent! Only slight downside were the number of children running about the place, who appeared to belong to the staff working there!

Only live ten minutes away so thought we would go and check out The Greyhound as had seen it was under new management. Came with the intention of a few drinks and ordering food. Just my opinion but… walked in and were met with children in the bar area at 6pm. These were not seated eating, just wondering around and calling out for parents. Now this is just not for me, I am not a fan of children in a bar area when there are other places they could be sat out of the way. We ordered drinks at the bar, no issues there though my wine could have been better chilled but we were not asked if we would like to see a menu to try to up sell food. Salt, pepper and vinegar on the tables but no menus on there? Perhaps there was no food available or they were fully booked for food? Unlikely though as only half a dozen people in there during our visit. We chose to sit where we have sat for years, where the Chesterfield sofas are located but I have to say the absolutely huge tv on the wall, a discarded pushchair and a broken wingback chair in the corner just made me feel a little bit sad. I fully understand the new management taking the opportunity to get customers in by showing sport especially now there is no Bell just up the hill who used to provide this. But… no music to create any atmosphere or cover the noise of children, just men on the tv programme talking about the golf?? Can’t the tv screen be on but only with sound when relevant? Bar staff or manage t need to read the room in these situations. So we didn’t stay to eat, just had one drink and drive up the hill to Wirksworth instead to another one of our ‘local pubs’ will give it a couple of months before we bother again. It’s a shame really as I love the building and where the pub is and over the years have enjoyed some great food here but there was no atmosphere or welcome here which is a shame.

Went in for a drink one lunch time . Met with a lovey member of staff at the bar who went out of her way to make us feel welcome. Drinks were reasonably priced and a good selection, sat outside in the beer garden taking in the sun . We booked a family room for a Sat night. The room was large, with a separate sleeping area for our 15 year old. The room is a little tired, with one of the plug damaged, but it was very clean. Bed was very soft. Nice touch with the chocolates. It was a little noisy as we were above the bar, but this all quietened down after closing time and didn't really disturb us. The breakfast was very good and served quickly. Would stay again.

Stayed for one night with friends. Not impressed at all. Bedding & towels were clean, room needed a lot of tlc. There was a lot to be desired on the cleanliness of both our rooms. The lights in both rooms didn’t work from about 11.30p.m, our friends wasn’t able to shower as there was no window in their bathroom. Breakfast was ok except not offered more coffee as only one cup. Tea we had a pot so did get two cups. We did tell a member of staff about the lights he said they keep tripping & waiting an electrician.

Decided to come here for Friday night dinner as I wasn’t in the mood the cook & I know it has recently changed hands so I was curious. It’s such a wonderful building with great history and deserves to be enjoyed. Inside looked very similar with the addition of the huge flat screen for sports they are now showing. It had more of a pub feel than before. It is a big space & in my opinion lacks atmosphere…maybe not when the football is on. Upon arrival, I advised I booked a table for two & was then pointed to a couple of different areas & told to choose a table, we were brought menus & told to order at the bar. I ordered the jerk chicken burger & my partner ordered the Cromford burger, I ordered half a bass & some water, he a glass of red. It was a good bass but no water. Our food didn’t take long to arrive & looked ok, the coleslaw was very mayo -y which I’m not a huge fan of so didn’t eat much. I stole an onion ring off my partner as they looked awesome & tasted great great., the chips were good and burger buns. The sauce in my burger was nice but I didn’t get any jerk seasoning on my chicken. It was almost a plain chicken breast cooked & plonked into the bun. I took it out & shredded it but there was no real flavour sadly so I tried to add the sauce to it. My partner said his burger was good but as the mushroom was grilled (I assume as it held water) as soon as he bit into it, it just oozed water, which wasn’t pleasant in a bun. The onion rings were amazing, the burger was a little over done but good quality. Food was ok, as was the service, a bit mixed & inconsistent across the staff members. I am local so will return.

Slightly apprehensive to eat here as the female bar staff seem so new and unprepared/inexperienced (not a criticism - we were aware the restaurant hadnt long reopened). However, the bar accepted us as a late entrance for food (7.30 arrival). Given until 7.45 to order, which was ample time. We saw some delicious food served to other tables whilst we waited. We decided on the burgers. They were cooked to perfection. Homemade coleslaw, chunky chips and sweet potato fries were the same standard. Definitely recommend eating here.

I understand that this venue is under new managment so I feel that I need to be both constructive but also point out whats going very wrong here.My family of 4 booked for dinner - were seated and drinks and order taken. Our meals arrived and I can only say that the lasange was burnt to a crisp.Black in fact, the chicken and chirizo was very overcooked and a mass of cheese was used on the pizza. My scampi was hot but the chips and mushy peas were stone cold. Going back to the lasange. I asked for the top to be removed and was told it was being re-cooked. OK the other 3 start our mediocre food. The lasange never arrives. 2 our party have to leave as we had tickets to an event nearby. 2 stayed. We sit for over 25 mins with on one coming over to see us then the waitress/manager (not really sure what her role was). She asked has it not arrived?- obviously not. By this time as you can imagine I was getting quite annoyed. 2 things....1. Everyone understands that things can and do go wrong but please keep your customers informed (this saves alot of stress on both sides) and 2. If you are just starting a new venture slim it right back and make sure you can deliver what you are actually selling and ensure that product is of a very high standard as your prices are not cheap. Also just not charging us for a meal which never arrived is very poor customer service.Reverse the roles and think again what might have been acceptable to you. £64 is not great value for rubbish food and very sub standard service.By the way my daugther left without a meal and I have to go back home to make her a sandwich before we joined our family. Not the lovely evening meal we had planned.Maybe just keep this to a bar only.Sadly the worse place I have ever been.

This hotel bar and ", restaurant" took a booking without information which included no food. Not even breakfast and charged 190 for just bed , one person two nights . I was the only guest staying because our boiler had broken down and I needed a warm room and a bath. I was the only guest. Only told no food when I arrived . Was told the heating had been put on in the room half an hour beforehand. I seriously doubted this it was cold. No hot water from the bath taps, had to put clothes back on and go downstairs to be shown I had to run the hot tap first in the sink. Excuse "this is an old property". The general shabbiness of the carpets and decor gave that away. Door to my "upgraded" room wouldn't close (door hinges), In the end it was so bad I checked out the same evening - this was met with "so what have you used in the room?" (Does it matter, they were getting paid for full use of it- I explained I'd only used the bathroom. The proprietor despite having been fully paid appeared most put out that I was leaving almost immediately.. I felt uncomfortable by his attitude and made excuses, said nothing wrong with the room (there was) but I just wanted to get out of there In my opinion the reviews I saw near such little resemblance to my experience I question their sources. I'm writing this to seriously dissuade anyone from staying here - it's expensive to the point of feeling ripped off really.

We didn't stay here, we came here for lunch and excitedly ordered two of the Warm Butternut Squash, Toasted Seeds & Quinoa Salads. We asked how large the small and large versions were and told the small was starter size so we went for the large at £14.00 for a main meal. Unfortunately, what came resembled a starter. There must have been minimal preparation for this in the kitchen. About half a dozen cm square pieces of Butternut Squash pan fried, about a table spoon of Quinoa and I was lucky if I found three toasted pine nuts in there, all on top of a straight out of the bag loose leaf salad with half of a loosely chopped baby gem underneath. As a vegetarian I really hate paying prices similar to those of a fully cooked meat dish but the quantity, quality and amount of work gone into the meal is minimal and very poor. Certainly not worth £14 each for a small and poor salad. My wife wouldn't let me say anything at the time as there were people on a nearby table. When we left we had to pop across the road for a snack to eat! Doubt we will choose here again for lunch.

Photos look ok online so thought I'd give it a go rather than booking a chain hotel like the premier inn. Unfortunately looks can be deceptive. ! Food last orders 8pm no exceptions. So I ordered a burger prior to arriving. As I was due to arrive about that time. Costing £16 and was served on a small wooden slab. Just use plates . It fell to pieces and was impossible to eat. 2nd floor room. Cold Tired Dirty red carpet, windows & sills not cleaned, thick dust on many surfaces. Cracked sink. Heating was put on in evening after I complained but it never came on in morning and I woke up cold. Came down for breakfast and the room was cold . Cooked breakfast was good & great sausage. The hotel needs a total refurb top to bottom in reality. However a cleaning blitz and then daily attention to detail in cleaning & a few changes of tired furniture would really help. Shame tbh as I much prefer older hotels.

Booked here for a three night stay on the basis that Booking.com gave it a 8.2 Very Good assessment. How that rating has been achieved beggars belief. On arrival the place was deserted apart from a man on the phone in the doorway who turned out to be the receptionist: phone call obviously more important than guests. The whole ground floor area has an air of neglect and shabbiness. The carpet on the staircase to the floors above can only be described as filthy. Bedroom absolutely dismal: no charm, tired old furniture and a grubby carpet. New shower room but basin was cracked and mould on the shower mat. Had to wait several minutes for any hot water to appear. Hotel is on a busy road which leads to a quarry. Very large HGVs running by throughout the night. Not the hotel's fault but we could not close the outside sash windows which are encrusted with dirt (there is secondary glazing) to deaden the sound. As a result a very poor nights sleep. Dinner was acceptable but portions rather small for the price. Dining area as dismal and uninviting as the rest of the establishment. Breakfast was okay apart from awful coffee. Finally there are too many 'rules' which are rammed home. There is a 'curfew' during the week on the booking literature of 11pm. However, on arrival we were told that it was 10pm - miss that and you are locked out! What on earth is in the mindset of the management - are they in the hospitality industry or not? Being so disappointed at the depressing accommodation we left after the first night. Never ever done that before. The hotel inhabits a great Georgian building: such a pity that its obvious potential has been ignored. The owners would benefit from a visit by Alex Polizzi, The Hotel Inspector.
