Lovely countryside pub with great food and helpful staff. If you want a authentic countryside pub here it is. Lovely views of the countryside which my daughter always asks for.

Very disappointed has gone down hill since last time we went. Booked for 2 people on a Saturday felt very rushed from the begging. Drinks were poor the Moretti was a bit off tasting vodka didn’t come with a slice or straw. Starters. We had soup of the day (tomato and basal). This was tasteless the bread and butter was good. Garlic mushrooms were ok nothing special. Mains. Chicken a le crème and rag steak pudding. Chicken was dry not seasoned overall tasteless. Steak pudding was average stake a little overcooked. After getting my starter not even 10 mins later and my bowl in front of me 2 different staff members asked if I was finished clearly not the bowl was still full. My guess is our mains has been warmed in microwave and where sat waiting as when I had finish not a min later mains were on table. Just felt very rush not a good sign. Was going to stop for cocktails after dinner but didn’t due to poor food and rushed service. Total cost was £64 for 2 starter 2 mains and 2 drinks, lot better places to go than this.

Ristorante pub molto frequentato anche durante la settimana a giudicare dal numero di ospiti in un martedi sera piovoso. Past this place many times in the past, will be passing again but not stopping. Firstly mat I say the waitresses were polite engaging and friendly, The food was not a match to the welcome. Steak and stilton pies, lacking any cheese, gritty cabbage and larger than life carrots, possibly horse carrots. The chips were at best warm and tasted reheated, probably made in batches and kept warm until use. Sorry to leave such a negative review but hopefully my views are reacted to and the standards match the beautiful views and waitresses. We were offered complimentary coffee which we declined as our opinion was not made to illicit freebies but to point out failings that can be remidied to your benefit.

Regularly passing this pub you always see a busy car park. Now I know why! We stopped to try lunch and it had plenty of customers. I chose the salmon which was delicious. Only negative was that for me it lacked seasoning. However this is a good thing when salt is not healthy for you. It is on the table to adjust to personal taste. My husband had the steak and Stilton pie. Very lean substantialbpie with two veg. My husband is more used to my heavy handed use of Stilton so he just felt it was lacking. This however in no way spoiled the enjoyment of the food and the quality. The waitresses were superb. Friendly smiling faces. Such a joy. Last but not least - the toilets let many establishments down. Sometimes if you visit them first you wouldn’t want to eat there. These toilets were absolutely immaculate. So sparkling you may need your sunglasses. ! We will return to try other selections on your menu. Thank you.

Have visited on many occasions. Food is normally very good but latest visit average....Chips were warm and pie has far too much pastry.Used to be able to have plate pie but this is no longer available...Crumble dessert was very nice but very small portion custard. We felt rushed after finishing meal and waitresses came over twice to get dessert order even though we asked to wait for short time...Left at 9.15 as staff were coming up asking if we finished coffee and removing cups . Will try again to see if better.

This is the only place I would go to again that sells soda water for an extortionate price because it is very tasty, proper food and fast service even when busy.

The food was very disappointing, rather tasteless. A mix on soggy pastry and over-cooked chips. It felt very re-heated food and thus, not the quality you expect for the price. Yet they had a great range of drinks and the staff were very friendly and welcoming.

The Grey mare used to be one of our favourite restaurants but I have visited it for the last time. The food quality has deteriorated. I used to like the mince and onion pie which was a delicious plate pie. Today's offering looked like a shop bought meat pie. Th 'mince' was lumpy and there was no sign of any onions. It was served with some unappetising, overcooked chips and some very large, rather tasteless lumps of carrot, cabbage and peas. Sad to say the peas were the best item on the plate. Three of our party of six ordered a fruit crumble with custard for a desert. They arrived with three tiny jugs of custard that must have contained about two tablespoons of custard apiece, barely enough to cover the top of the pudding. If this is meant to cut costs, it no doubt succeeded and even further cost savings will be made in future as I will not be ordering any food there ever again.

Obviously a popular place judging by the number of guests on a wet and windy Wednesday night. Great location, great service and great food cooked to perfection and promptly even on a busy night

We’ve visited the Grey Mare several times & have always had a great meal. 8 of us were celebrating my daughter’s birthday. The food was prompt & delicious & the staff were very friendly. The place was really busy.

Just been for lunch at the Grey Mare on Elton Road, Belthorn. I live locally but have not been for years because the food didn't used to be that great, however, I had been told it had improved greatly. My brother had Lasagna Alforno came with salad, which was fine, ample portion and he enjoyed it. I had a Grey Mare burger, it looked like a childs' portion, very small bun, very small pattie which came with minced bone in it and luke warm soggy chips just slapped on a plate no garnish. Needless to say it could be another 10 years before I return. If I want to eat good locally it's the Dog Inn at Belthorn for me, you get an adult size burger and no soggy chips all well presented and it's not as expensive.

We did not book but even though it was busy we still managed to get a table, the waitress soon came over with the menus and took our drinks order, for food I had the steak and Stilton pie and my wife had a spicy chicken burger, we didn't have to wait too long before our food was brought to our table and the presentation was excellent, we soon tooked into our food and everything about it was great, very very tasty and plentiful too, we both struggled to empty our plates, will definitely be returning to this gem of a place, excellent all round

Been here loads of times with no problems but today was so different. After being seated seemed like a lifetime before we were asked if we had ordered drinks. No we hadn't. The poor lady who had come for our food order was very apologetic. Then couldn't sign on to our table as someone else had not closed the terminal down . Kept apologising, plenty of other staff about but not helping. Food was good . Presentation not so good one plate was chipped. When we mentioned a server said I'll throw it away after. When we paid our bill we got apologies again about the wait which shouldn't have happened. One person can't keep all the plates spinning. Don't think we will return in a hurry.

What can I say, absolutely brilliant,all 4 of us absolutely stuffed,best barbecue chicken wings I've ever tasted,all mains fantastic,bar staff excellent and waitresses couldn't do enough for us,great price's,would definitely recommend

We often meet as old friends as a little re-union. We often visited various venues until we stumbled upon The Grey Mare and have been meeting here ever since. We visited again today 18th December 23 and weren’t disappointed, the staff are amazing and the food never disappoints. Would always return to this pub and even though I travel quite a distance to meet friends here, it will be a regular haunt for some time to come

The quality of the Christmas Turkey dinner was exceptional probably the best we’ve ever had (apart from mums).And the service was equally excellent.

Just had to commend the food and service. When ordering, I forgot to mention I did not want sauce on my meal. They recooked the potatoes and veg for me without sauce without me asking and at no charge. And it was delicious. Fantastic service.

Managed to book in at last minute. Car park was full and when we got in the pub it was a good job we had booked as it was really full. Decent choices on the menu seemed to be something for everyone We had the garlic bread with cheese for a starter between 2 and it was lovely . Good job we shared as it was very filling We both had minced beef & onion pie, like a deep plate pie slice with gravy. One with chips & mushy peas and one with mash and veg.We both thought the pie was much too salty. The mushy peas were barely Luke warm, the chips didn’t really taste of anything and the mash appeared to be from a packet ? Staff were very nice and attentive Not sure if we would return or not

Been looking at this place for a couple of months and had earmarked it as our next midweek outing. Very very disappointed ! Food was bland, chips were chewy (told it was a supplier change in potato) which I didn’t understand what so ever as they were clearly frozen chips and the mushy peas definitely tinned. We are no snobs or Michelin food critiques by any stretch but at the prices being charged for simple pub dishes you expect at least to enjoy your meal with proper chips, your pie not to be rock hard and your mushy peas not to be bachelors. If there was one plus it’s that the waiting on staff were really friendly and apologetic. Will say we was offered a complimentary sweet which we politely declined. If the food was half as nice as the decor they would be onto a winner.

Greeted by warm, friendly and welcoming staff. Buzzing and busy atmosphere, unfortunately that didn't help with the feeling of a cramped table or cramped environment.The entire meal was sat with my knitted jacket on, although others were sat without, I wouldn't exactly call myself a cold person.Service was professional and prompt, attentive staff but unfortunately no staff wore Face Masks, customers were not prompted to wear face masks when coming or going. I also noticed that during the cleaning of tables in between rounds of customers, there was little attention actually cleaning, the table was immediately sprayed and dried, without the push to allow the chemicals time to activate and kill the bacteria or viruses. There was no attention paid to cleaning the condiments (salt, pepper and vinegar containers) displayed on the table, not a good sign for customers worried about their health in general with or without Covid being a factor.The food here is often posted online with modern and clean style. Unfortunately, those that ordered the pink Sunday Roast ended up with what I would call a more well done Beef. For myself, I tried the Chicken Caesar Salad... eager to see the display the chef's style for this simple salad.The dish was ambient temperature, the dish was a basic display of splayed fillets of chicken breast that apparently was chargrilled but little evidence to support this. The chicken was in my opinion overcooked and underseasoned. The Chicken Ceasar Salad was no better than my experience of the Chicken Ceasar Salad that I have tasted from my local Aldi supermarket...the price was the main difference, £12.00 almost for this sad state of a salad. I am not impressed with the quality of this despite it being raved about through Social Media. With the price of this dish, my expectations were higher than average, I half expected a pyramid of crisp leaf, a taste of dressing, a good splash of parmesan shavings and a full chicken breast sliced uniformly and neatly presented.Difficult to see what the reviews are about, the back of house team does not feel to me any better than any other local pub.I will not be coming back to this establishment any time soon.

We found this place today and had the most lovely meal. The service was great and quick. All staff were friendly and helpful. The food arrived quickly and was very tasty. Can't ask for more than that!

We were passing by the local area my partner is from the area I’m a Yorkshire lass :-) what can I say the staff first of all made us all feel very welcome and were all really friendly, the food was beautiful. I had the featherblade of beef special it was amazing really enjoyed it credit to the chef. My other half had suet pudding which he really enjoyed as we live in Yorkshire and he said he hadn’t had it for a while (I didn’t even know what it was ‍♀️) My little girl enjoyed her meal too I would highly recommend lovely cosy pub too we had one of the booths which was great loads of room for the high chair. Will definitely be back thanks again xx

We went for a family meal as every time we have drove past it looks very busy. I had a steak which was ok, no flavour and the chips were terrible, my wife wanted beef roast dinner, for the waitress to come back and say they had sold out at 5 pm on a sunday! My wife and mother decided on lamb roast dinner, when it arrived the asked for mint sauce to be told there was none!! They were very disappointed to say the least.Staff were pleasant enough but the place just misses on the little touches that make places better than others, sad to say we wont be back and neither will friends we bumped into as well, could be so much better.

Visited Saturday afternoon we booked a table for 6 adults and a highchair. Arrived and was seated very quick. No messing around. Drinks order was taken while we looked at the food menu. Ample choice for everyone. Great specials. Having a German Themed menus for the beer festival was a great touch. Everyone enjoyed there meals. We are have 3 courses and a few drinks. Service was fantastic. Amazing staff. The apple pie on specials was amazing you should 100% have it on your main dessert menu. This is now our new regular eatery.

Went there for the first time today, the car park was busy so it looked promising. Most of the tables were taken and it looked like a good choice for lunch. I ordered the fish and chips because it looked nice as it was being served . It was terrible! The chips were leathery, dry and lukewarm, not freshly cooked and the mushy peas were lukewarm too. The batter on the fish seemed crispy but it was soggy and slimy on the inside, the appearance was good but it was the worst fish and chips I’ve ever had. Not a place I would visit again.

We had a joint 47th wedding anniversary lunch with a couple who got married at the same church as us a hour before in 1974. We get together every year for lunch. Good service, nice wholesome food, nicely priced and good beer. Staff friendly and straight out of Rovers Return. Pub was very busy and it was a good job that we had booked. Car park was full. View through window marvellous. Pub has a nice marquee annex and an outdoor area - but we are told it is often too windy to sit out. Excellent table service. Will visit again. Two of us had Cissy Green 's meat pies from Haslingden and two of us had curried chicken with chips and rice from China. One had apple strudel and ice cream from Germany and one had sticky toffee pudding and ice cream from the treacle mines. Food complemented with nice beer, fine wine and delicious coffee. After 2.00 pm - pub got quieter.

Not been in Donkades! Booked for 5:30! Don't have the table opp kitchen door! Bit raucous, but fun! Mia & Grace served us really nicely! Specials great! I had mince plate pie! Beers great, wine list smart! Not rushed! Quite busy but really very good! Recommended! Just over £60, £65 with deserved tip!

Visited today sad to say most of the food was frozen, the mash potato was out of a packet and the chips were anaemic. The apple strudel pastry was soggy very disappointing

Recently visited for an evening meal with partner and another husband and wife.One of the ladies ordered a steak and ordered it medium to well done.She said it was so tough it was like shoe leather and very hard to chew and had no flavour,resulting in her leaving most of it.When it came to the sweet order only three of us wanted the apple strudel.We were asked if we wanted the strudel hot or cold.Two wanted warm and one cold.After the order was taken we were advised by one of the waiting staff that they couldn't do a cold strudel and it could only be hot.......why????Limited salad menu and no fish otherthan traditional fish and chips....!!!!!!!!Also it would seen that there was more than a fair share of pie dishes and not much variety.Think the menu needs a thorough looking at to entice punters

Called for a drink a few weeks ago & was so impressed with the young attentive staff, thought I’d return to try the food. I came with my daughter for a mid week tea out. Arrived at 6pm & the car park was already really busy. We were seated in a lovely booth & the pub has a really nice ambience. I ordered two small glasses of very nice Sauvignon blanc. My daughter ordered fish & chips, I ordered the king prawn curry. Both were delicious, just really good pub food, once again served by a lovely young team of waiters/waitresses who can’t do enough for you. Will definitely be one to add to my favourite places to eat around Bolton & Bury…
