After paying for 5 carverys and not being informed of waiting times, we get to the start of the carvery to see all meats with less then 8oz left on all, the carver comes out and we ask if any fresh meat was coming as it was bare and dry, he ensured us the meat would be enough for our cover and that he’s previously won best carver award. We then get our meat to see there was no veg/mash potatoes but a huge pile of chips, we was then told it would be 45 minutes for veg as the fan had broke on the rational, we already had our meat that was somehow going worse and we couldn’t get anymore for when the veg was ready unless we paid, the only upside to the meal was the veg was brought out after 15 minutes as the broken fan started to work again, maybe this was just a bad time experience on my behalf but I won’t be returning

Thankyou to the team at the Redcap for their delightful hospitality today. I had a wonderful carvery. The meats were delicious especially the gammon. Chef treated me to a sausage too! Abi made coffees and these were hot and fresh. Thankyou redcaps!!!!

Not really. Been here, our "local" carvery a few times and frankly it appears to be on the slide. The meat on the carvery counter appears to stay there until it is utterly cremated, so timing (a lottery) is crucial. And to echo a previous reviewer, wearing a chefs hat doesn't entitle you the courtesy of calling me pal.The oddity however is that non-carvery meals are served via the carvery counter, fish, for example will appear randomly on the carvery. It was quiet when we were in and the one member of staff on duty was able to come to the table to advise us the fish was ready - not sure how this works at busy times. The concept of service to the table doesn't seem to apply here.Sauces are presented in open dishes on a table, unmarked and open to, well anything. No mayonnaise however. The standard menu is extremely limited. Fair to say this establishment is not pretentious and seems to be aimed at a specific clientele.Won't be going again

Normally a good choice but today was very disappointed. Meat was dry, veg was tasteless, potatoes were greasy and the gravy was just awful. Not many people in so no atmosphere, will try carvery elsewhere

It's not the first time we have visited here , always had a decent carvary . Restaurant big with plenty large tables, looks like it has a steady bar trade too . Bar staff a little bit distracted by surroundings , no customer interaction , but polite enough. 2 meals and 2 drinks £13 , can't really grumble . I would avoid late afternoon , as if looked like meat and veg had been sat there all afternoon ! But brought fresh roast potatoes on request . Quality reflects in price .

It was okay but the food could have done with being a little bit hotter. It was lunch time and quite busy so you would expect the food to be at its hottest.

We have visited several Crown Carveries and had excellent meals with lovely staff all over England. This used to be good, but not on our last visit. It was 6.15pm and we were informed there was only the miserable dried up meat and no more vegetables. What!!!!!? Not good and the whole place smelled of fat. Not a good place. We left and went to the local chippy and had a great meal

Been before when it was Rubbish, thought we'd give it another chance after a refurb ... NEVER EVER AGAIN ! The beef was dry, roast potatoes either undercooked or hard and dry, sprouts like bullets, Yorkshire puds like rubber, meatless Shepards pie & the chips were dry and cold.

I will try to keep this review constructive not condemnation. We were recommended to visit by family so we're looking forward to the experience. Here goes.Firstly, wearing a cooks and wielding a big knife does not give the guy carving the meat the right to call all and sundry his"pal".Secondly , the small amount of meat served was a bit of a supprise after all we did not ask for children's portions.Thirdly, if the veg had been any less cooked it could have been described as salad. The roast potatoes were welded together in big lumps. In the restaurants favour, when the manager spoke to us he was most apologetic and explained the problems they had with the potato suppliers. His offer to refund half the bill was accepted with thanks. Non the less food should not be sent out in that condition .Although the pudding was edible we will not be clamouring to eat there again

Visited for Sunday Lunch carvery. Standard menu for Crown carverys but very well presented, piping hot, typical 4 meat roast with masses of vegetables and sauces. Good value for money and we shall definitely be going again especially mid week when the menu is the same but cheaper, On a Sunday for every adult a child under 10 eats free. Staff attentive and friendly.

Took my husband to this restraunt for the sunday carvery, We had a pork meal that was luke warm, there were 2 identical pots of gravy next to each other but when we put some gravy on our dinner we found it was minted gravy, this was not seperated enough to let people know they were different gravy`s. Service was not seen until she cleared our plates. Will not be going back.

Stock trade here is the Carvery which I"ve visited on weekdays. There are however several sizes available at different prices. Curiously everyone seems to be dished out the same sized portion no matter what price paid in that the meat portions seem to be reduced each time I visit. The meat on offer on my lunch time visit looked a little dried out. The staff here are helpful and the location and decor is pleasant. Still offers good value for money but nothing special.

Visited the Old Mother Redcap on 18th April 2013, with 3 grandchildren and parents. Arrived at 4pm just after school had finished and ordered 4 standard carveries and 3 childrens smaller carveries. I had 2 slices of gammon and a slice of turkey. The gammon was excellent but the turkey quite dry. Very little stuffing and cauliflower was ready, perhaps that was down to the huge obese male who had stacked up his plate to a height of 8 inches high and had piled his food to the optomen height available without falling onto the floor, no wonder he was in excess of 25 stone! greed, greed greed! Our family all agreed the food on offer was acceptable without being great. Overall including drinks our bill was £40 so was good value. I have had better crown carveries but Red Cap is local. I wont be rushing back but will return sometime in the future, hopefully Mr obese male will not be present.

I have to say it was quite a let down as the price has gone up, the meat was very dry & the roast potatoes were overcooked & the boiled potatoes have now been replaced with mash, which was rather hard to get out of the dish

Who could make a sunday roast at home for under £4.00 per person. Don't know what other reviews are going on about as they don't serve BURGERS! They serve CARVERIES and BREAKFASTS !! If you want 5 star cuisine go pay 5 star prices and leave well alone !! As a carvery the company makes nothing if you just buy food. who do you know would ask for a free glass of water to add insult to injury !! How sad !!!

Good general carvery, though meat is a bit on the dry side, good job they have no limits on gravy then! Tho a few times Ive been the staff have been in the back chatting while the que is reaching around the side for the carvery, so ask them to hurry up! hehe The desserts are yummy too and you could easily share a sundea (if you felt like it...) they are that big. Buy a bowl of icecream and fill it up as much as u want.

Often visit the Old Mother Redcap for the carvery meal as it is such excellent value for money. Choice of 3 roast meats, or you can have a bit of each, ie Gammon, Turkey and Beef, Plus Roast and Boiled potatoes, plus at least 6 vegetables, Gravy, Sauces, Yorkshire Pudding and Stuffing Balls, Its cheaper than a sandwich in most pubs and at least it gives you chance to have some of your 5 a day vegetables and fruit.

Having Used Mother Redcaps on many previous occasions, I found they had run out of food and what was left, was very low standard scraps for dogs, not a full carvery, several customers waiting for sweets and orders, never got served, waitresses seem uninterested in customers, conversation more to do with their personal life than their job, bad for the restaurant, Today a bad experience not to be repeated, The manager ought to be ashamed of the standards set by the restaurent and staff. I shall think again before patronising a crown inn

We have been to this pub many times before it changed hands to "Pub and Carvery" and have always enjoyed it.Yesterday we went on recommendation from friends. We arrived about 2p.m. and found a table before buying a drink from a very surly lass, purchasing our £3.50 carvery tickets.THe choice apart from this was pathetic.Hardly a word from her I have to say, so different from our previous experiences there. But the food was poor. The turkey was o.k. but nothing was hot, even the cauli had been sitting for a while. Always a problem I know when left under the heat lamps, why didn't they replace it though?but oh the beef! It was as tough as old boots(not that I've ever eaten or chewed old boots) We really couldn't cope with it. Yes we have our own teeth and yes I know i should have said so but we had been to the hospital for the morrning so were worn out! When we left they were still carving from this pathetic tiny piece of beef which resembled brisket....certainly not topside or anything I've ever seen before. The gravy and sauces were messy and I went to the kitchen with the empty horseradish which they just filled....mucky spoon left in and all. Yuk!Not for us, cheap I know but The Toby Carvery I'd had last week was much better quality.
