Used to visit the Green Welly a lot (it was my go-to) and recommended it to loads of friends when the previous owner took over. A few of my friends are plant-based eaters and there was always a choice of at least one delicious cake and several vegan options which the previous owner discussed and listened to ideas at the beginning). Not any more. Not one plant-based cake on offer, the soup was 'accidentally vegan' and there was one token hummus plant based option. Now that so many eateries offer imaginative vegan choices which appeal to omnivores, vegetarians and vegans, it's win-win all round.(Am wondering what happens for those who are allergic to dairy too... no plant-based choice for them). The owner was clearly disinterested in talking about it or researching the food market where millions are being invested in the vegan market - for the climate; for health and for animals. Won't be going back. How sad.

We called in for coffee and cake today. Two coffees, one walnut and coffee cake, one carrot cake GLUTEN FREE. The GF cake either not GF, or in the serving process it was cross-contaminated (serving knife, cutting board, etc?). If cafes are offering allergy-free service they need to be meticulous in ensuring their service is up to the required standard to achieve that. Wouldn’t risk it again.

We dropped in for (a late) lunch while visiting the Ditchling Artists' Open Houses and we both ordered quiche and potato salad. When it arrived, one plate had coleslaw instead of potato salad because they had run out. Now, you could be critical and say that they should have told us about the substitution before serving, and I was a little disappointed because the potato salad had looked very good, BUT (and here's the point) they couldn't have been more apologetic about it and offered us different salads and free cake and extra drinks to make up for it. That's the way to run a public-facing business! The food, by the way, was delicious and we'll certainly be visiting again - maybe a bit earlier this time.

We have been visiting the Green Welly for coffee and cake for several years. However, since the new owners took over, sadly, it isn't the same. We have been overcharged on numerous occasions. It's often only 30p or 50p extra, but it all adds up! Understandably, prices have recently increased. However, I feel it is excessive to be charged an extra 75p for oat milk in coffee. For two double machiato with a spoonful of oatmilk froth, we were charged £3.85 each! I wouldn't object to paying slightly more for oat milk, but not 75p for a spoonful of foam! It's not even Oatly. They use cheap oat milk. We will be going to the Nutmeg Tree from now on.

Have visited this cafe twice recently, this was always one of my favourite cafes and always busy .. On both visits it has been so much quieter, whether this is because of the new owner , I’m not sure . She just doesn’t seem as friendly and welcoming as the previous owners, with no friendly greeting .. this has put us off , so not sure if we’re be visiting again .. very disappointed

The Green Welly was busy and had many bookings but kindly provided the two of us with a table as we just needed a quick coffee on our way to an exhibition at the nearby Ditchling Museum. The staff are lovely and the flapjack delicious! After visiting the Museum we returned to the Green Welly for a late lunch on the off chance we could get a table at this thriving establishment. Again the lovely staff were able to kindly squeeze us in and the soup and sandwich lunch proved delicious. We would recommend - and hope to return when next in Ditchling.

Came here this morning after seeing it on social media, as we were planning to visit Ditchling. We had booked in advance by email as advised on the website, however it really seemed that the locals/walk-in customers/cyclists were being served faster. We appreciate the stresses of the current situation, but the atmosphere felt very loud and conflicted. The noice came from all directions: the traffic at the crossroads outside; the coffee machines; the locals behind us who were talking very loudly. As a result, we couldn’t hear the waitress who was telling us the menu options. There is no written-down menu, only chalkboards out of most people’s vision of sitting at the front like we did. We do understand that in the current situation, touching print-out menus is rightfully avoided - perhaps a laminated menu stuck to the table would be sufficient. Due to the aforementioned noice in the background, it was hard to hear what our options were. This would have been easier if they had been written down all in one place.Side note: the servers were all wearing masks; but only over their mouths and not their noses. We do know that the rules say that servers/shopkeepers don’t have the mandatory need to wear face coverings, however it is surely self-explanatory that the masks should be worn properly? The rather oddly positioned mask was one of the reasons why the words of our server weren’t very audible. We ordered three hot chocolates with marshmallows, one elderflower pressé, one breakfast ciabatta and three bacon ciabattas. We were told by the server that there were no more sausages left in the kitchens for the breakfast ciabatta (and for one of the other ciabattas which was meant to contain sausages and bacon). As the café was closed yesterday, we find it odd how they had suddenly run out of sausages. We received our drinks, but had to wait a ridiculously long time for the food: so long that we had almost finished our drinks. Yes, we do understand that the food is home-cooked, but it was disappointing not to be told to expect a long wait. One of us looked at the range of available cakes before we made our order. Sadly we preferred to have what we had already ordered, as the selection of cakes were rather eclectic and not the traditional options that we expected to see. During our long wait for our food, we saw someone put out some scones - no one told us that we could have ordered scones. When the food finally arrived, we got 2 ciabattas and 2 baguettes instead of the four ciabattas that we had ordered. The pieces of baguette were much smaller than the ciabatta equivalent and very hard to eat - the fat was dripping from the bacon out of the baguette. The bacon was well cooked and very nice, but since we waited so long that is what we had come to expect. We were made to pay after the drinks had arrived, before our hugely long wait for the food. This seems odd, as surely we could have paid at the end (whilst staying at our table) and had a chance to offer feedback? It felt like they thought we were going to run away! Also, it meant that we couldn’t add another drink or anything as we’d already paid. At the end, there was just a ‘thank you’ and we felt obliged to get out of the way as soon as possible. It did say on the procedure sheet on the table that we would need to vacate swiftly after finishing, but it all felt rather cold and unnatural. I have given four stars as the food was very good, but there were aspects of the atmosphere and experience that let it down for us.

Though I live locally this was the first time visiting the Green Welly where I met a friend for lunch. The interior is welcoming, clean and warm. We both had the “Green Welly Special”, which consists of your choice of salad, tart (quiche), and small cup of soup. I had greek salad with prosciutto and roquefort tart (warmed) and the carrot and lentil soup. The slice of tart was very well proportioned, with perfect crisp pastry and everything on the plate was full of flavour and complementary to each other. After lunch we had latte, which I was a little less impressed with (it was more bitter than I would normally like so I added a lump of sugar), but this didn’t take away from the very enjoyable lunch and I would highly recommend.

Today was the second time we have visited for lunch, the food is good and the staff are friendly but it was spoilt today by the very bad background music. The cafe is noisy at lunch time and the bad background music just adds to the noise, I am not sure what the purpose of it is, it may be fine when there are less people but today it just made for an unpleasant experience and we had to leave as soon as we had finished, where as we may have lingered for a cake otherwise.

We went in and chose a table to sit at. There was a menu on the table and we noticed two specials boards up on the wall behind our table. You have to order at the counter and pay for what have ordered immediately. Our dog received a little dish with some dog biscuits in it, they were given to us first, which we thought was a lovely touch.I'd ordered two elderflower fizzy drinks that came in the can with two glasses. They were delicious and nice and cold.We had to wait about 20 minutes for our food. I had a warmed up slice of roasted aubergine quiche with two portions of salad and my husband had a sausage toastie which came with a side salad. They were nicely presented. My husband said his sausages were apple sausages and he liked his toastie. My quiche was nice but didn't taste of aubergine. I had a beetroot salad that was nice beetroot but I couldn't taste any dressing on it, there were no dressings on the table either, the other salad was peppers and red cabbage and something else which I couldn't make out! It had a little dressing. This all came to just over £20.We still felt hungry after eating this so decided to have a cake each. I went up to the counter to see what they had and there was a good selection of all different types of cakes including Welsh cakes, a gluten free cake and a vegan cake, which I decided to try - it was chocolate fudge with vanilla cream. My husband had a slice of cookies and cream cake. I also had a latte. They came quite quickly and the coffee was very nice. I didn't like my vegan cake, I couldn't taste chocolate or fudge but my husband loved it, so we swapped, his cake was very sweet and I couldn't eat it all, so hubby finished that too, he was very happy! It's very nicely decorated inside this place, I loved the Christmas decorations and the people working here were very friendly, they loved our dog. There are also panninis and jacket potatos and there was a wine list on our table too. There's a toilet on the ground floor and it was immaculately clean.I think it would make things easier to have one menu on the table as there seems to be lots all over the place and it's difficult to find them all before ordering! We would certainly return here again.

We popped in to the Green Welly after walking the dog on Ditchling Common the other Tuesday lunchtime. Decor inside the restaurant is very nice but sitting outside we felt more could be done to smarten the area up. It was quite hot and there are no sun umbrellas on any of the tables. A young woman was trying to find some shade for her small baby. Probably too hot to go outside on a summer's day. No flowers on the tables and the surroundings were rather bare and bleak with lots of the plants dead or dying. In one part of the patio was a huge thing under a green cover which might be an outside heater. Not very attractive. The cakes are always wonderful here but I had an egg mayo sandwich. It was huge and tasteless with some salad leaves, tea, coffee and a cake cost nearly £15 for two of us. Next time we will just stick to coffee and cake.

Visited with my 80+ grandparents for lunch, we sat outside as it was quite a sunny day in the courtyard. When we went to order they ignored us for a few mins before asking fairly rudely what we wanted. After ordering we sat outside for ages waiting for our meal.. 2 other couples sat, ate and went before i decided to enquire if we had been forgotten. When i went to the till, i was left hanging there for quite a while, i tried to tell the lady i didn't want to order but ask a question but she just spoke over me and told me the specials were behind me. She then went off and chatted with a friend, she didnt come back. A nice guy eventually asked me and i asked what had happened to our food? He DID apologise and went to check, girl behind counter said it was ready but could he take the other meals to someone else first! When we eventually got our meals (a jacket potato, panini and beans on toast!) the sun had gone behind the wall and we sat out in the courtyard in the cold and on our own (as everybody else had left by that point!) The last time i came here was about a year ago, i didnt like it then for a similar reason and after giving it another go, i wont be trying again. Its a shame as the food is really nice but let down by grumpy harassed staff who seem to be too busy to smile or be polite. After reading some of the other reviews, it seems im not the only one. Even their responses are cagey and unapologetic.

The service was superb combined with the timing in which our drinks came to our table swiftly (pot of tea for one & a marshmallow hot chocolate) followed by our scones (accompanied with clotted cream and strawberry jam)

Lovely welcoming cafe on the high street. Friendly staff making it a nice relaxed atmosphere. The senior dippy eggs were delicious! They made scrambled eggs for my nephew even though it wasn’t on the menu! Good coffee too!

Intimate surroundings and cosy atmosphere. A busy venue, so if you're catching up with someone you haven't seen for a while, be warned, it can be quite noisy! Maybe a little more space would have been nice, our table was right next to the kitchens! Great food, though and mouth watering cakes, everything very healthy and well presented. Ideal for dog lovers.

What a lovely little cafe! Really inviting comfortable with friendly staff and yummy home made cakes. The perfect place for a cosy stop off whilst passing through Ditchling. Will definitely pop in again when we're next in the area.

My friend and I visited the green welly for the first time on Friday evening.... They were very busy as they had a private function in there, but were still able to accommodate us, with a light snack, just what we needed. Thank you.

The perfect afternoon pit-stop as we passed through Ditchling. The staff were polite, friendly and welcoming, and the warm and relaxing atmosphere was the perfect antidote to the cold and wintery weather outside.

After struggling to find a parking space, got to cafe and found a seat. Had to queue for ages to place order (table service would make a big positive difference), which is tricky with dogs (it says dogs welcome). It was very noisy when we were there and there was a large group of people who stood up chatting for ages which was quite annoying as right by our table. Food nice although was a long wait before it arrived, not many vegan options although vegan cake was lovely. Staff - some really friendly, others total opposite. Manager/owner seemed rather aloof. Not sure dogs were really welcome or maybe only little ones welcome? Not sure I’d revisit as didn’t feel welcomed really!

Novel place that has a good range. Great for casual eating but but sometimes odd service although there are lots of staff.

I never do this but that chicken and avocado sandwich was quite simply superb and the Earl Grey was the best i’ve tasted in a long time. The service was marvellous too! Well done!

We regularly visit and always get good service, good food and a lively atmosphere. A small and very busy coffee shop offering a tasty selection of home made food different from others in the area. We love the interesting selection of cakes on offer. A very popular place to visit in the heart of the village. One of our favourites.

I had heard about this comment and would like to make my own. I live in Ditchling and am a regular customer who has only ever experienced good service and very friendly staff.

We live not far away from Ditchling and eat fairly often at The Green Welly - along with friends and family we’ve taken there and who’ve become ‘regulars’ themselves. The current owners and management have transformed it into a lively, buzzy, popular venue offering a wide range of healthy eating options and, of course, inventive and delicious cakes some of which deserve a place on Bake-Off. That’s backed up by friendly, informed and caring service irrespective of how busy it is - and it often is.

The quality of food and coffee is really excellent, so I do encourage anyone to visit, but I hope they can improve the service. Sadly there’s no table service, which means that when it’s busy, you have to queue by the front door to get a table, then queue again to order food, then queue again to add anything to your order, then queue again to ask for puddings... you get the picture! It makes for a less than relaxed experience! When we visited, with two children under 2, they didn’t have enough high chairs so we had to balance the children on our laps. The staff were clearly busy and therefore a little fractious and not able to be as smiley and helpful as maybe they hope to be.....So all in all a mixed bag. But the coffee was delicious..!

The name "Green Welly" attracted us as well as their 8.30 opening time, brilliant for breakfast and then a fantastic walk in the Sussex countryside.

This is a lovely cafe situated in ditchling, a hidden gem. The people who run the cafe are absolutely lovely, and the food is even better (if possible). I recommend the pink lemonade! Will definitely be returning- highly recommend.

Gezellig klein restaurantje. Goede bediening. De hond kreeg een hondenkoekje maar er was geen waterbak voor de hond. Gelukkig hadden we zelf water bij ons want het was een hele warme dag.

Looked up cafes for breakfast near the port and found this gem. Nothing to look at as its a porta cabin but inside its clean and the food is excellent. Thick bread and butter, great breakfasts and very reasonable prices. Love the dog but not sure everyone would appreciate the staff stroking the dog and then continuing to serve food but we love dogs and doesn't bother us. The tea and coffee were best tasted, not fancy just proper tea and coffee. Would definately recommend, parking at the rear too. Easy to walk from port or premier inn, and great value. Staff very friendly and will definitely return next trip to Newhaven.

The kind lady serving was so helpful providing us with a ramp for my mother in law to get her wheel chair into the cafe. The food and drink was great and we will definitely be going back again..

A plate of happiness in every visit. Chilled little cafe that sells excellent fruit and vegetables, great coffee and can even get a glass of wine but I like the breakfasts and a tea :)
