The Green Dragon Inn in Stratford-on-Avon

We live nearby but never visited before. Really can’t see why we would ever again either now! Arrived jsut before 12 to get a surly “we don’t open til 12”. When we explained we were waiting for a walking group they had already been turned away and the pub owner replied “we can’t have all the dogs”. Perhaps “all the dogs” could’ve been accommodated in the outside area ?! Perhaps lots of people might’ve bought drinks and maybe food when it did open in a few mins?! Then again maybe not, we left as it was the least welcoming and shabby pub I have visited , ever.

Stopped by for lunch at this 16th century property. The pub has great character with a lovely border terrier to great you. The food was excellent and home cooked. We’ll be back.

Lovely situated very old world pub with great food

Just home after another visit to the NEC - where my colleague and I always stop over at the Green Dragon. Once again, it never dissapoints. What a fabulous place. I really can't recommend it enough. Those who've made a few negative comments in these reviews really should open their eyes a little. Pete and his team do a fabulous job and are always most welcoming. I think this was our sixth time there - already looking forward to the next one. It's certainly not a Holiday Inn and that's why I love it so much. Thanks to all the team at the Green Dragon - we'll see you again soon and once again - thanks very much!

This is one of the gems. Nice quiet warm unspoilt traditional pub. Friendly dog. Food was excellent and good value. Hand made chips, proper bread and fresh.

Service exceptional poor, not dog friendly unless you are a personal friend of the landlady (subject to locals approval) just look at the rest of the reviews on here and you will find that the genuine visitors are in agreement, the Landlord is RUDE.

Peter the Landlord is a lovely man and makes you very welcome.

Food was lovely but lady who served us was slow and rude, moved inside after eating and she asked if we had bought our dirty plates in with us….wouldn’t recommend

Rudest landlady ever, 3rd visit in the last 12 months, each time this Licencee has been rude and unwelcoming, apparently unless you live in Sambourne and are classed as a local then you are snubbed and to be Frank treated like a second class citizen. I've travelled all over the World and have encountered beligerent landlords but this is the worst, on the positive side the food is actually very good, what can I say, the sooner a new landlord from the owners (Punch Taverns Ltd) I will be delighted, I have spoken to several interested parties and hope in the near future this venue will again be open to all customers looking for a really great social centre with no discrimination !!!

Wouldn't recommend staying here overnight unless you absolutely can't find anything else. It's old, dated and needs attention. Very basic room and bathroom could've been cleaner, heating not working. The mattress has springs that were so loud when you simply turned over. The food in the pub was okay and the barmaid was great, however the landlady is very rude and I'm not sure if she actually wants anyone in her pub. Just one example - We rang up to book a room, she says come after 12 because that's when they're open. We turned up at 12:30 to which we were met with "check in is at 2pm". We were treated like an inconvenience but didn't take it personally as she was rude to other punters too - another couple came in to eat and after a short interaction, just left.

Situated in the heart of the village overlooking the pretty green. Had a delicious Sunday roast! 😋

The most unwelcoming pub i have ever used myself and my wife walked in to the Green Dragon around 14.40 unknown to us the place closed at 14.30 we greeted with what do you want served drinks £4.60 a pint five minuets later we were told they were closing in five minuets so we had to rush our drinks we will not be revisiting any time soon.

Great value room and fantastic food and service. Will definitely return.

Lovely rural pub with a good selection of beers, nicely located in the center of the village, good parking or if preferred just by the footpath into the fields Menu looked good but we only stopped in for drink

Stayed overnight while visiting family, warm welcome, great value room, clean and comfortable

New to the area, visited the Green Dragon a few times and have also taken friends there. Excellent standard of food at extremely reasonable prices. We love Cassie the dog, as do many other customers it seems. The staff are very good and friendly. We also like chatting to the lady in charge for her quirky sense of humour and dry wit!

Cycled off the beaten track and found this pub Popped in and had two cider that cost around 4.60 each Abit old fashioned but the staff members was kind and very knowledgeable of the area.

Sat outside for a drink tradition pub in need of some renovation but worth a visit.

On arrival we went into the bar and introduced ourselves to the landlady. Without a word of greeting she put a key on the bar and said our room number. I asked if the room was upstairs and she just indicated towards the door with her head. The other barmaid said the rooms were outside. My Husband asked if we could book breakfast, she sighed and said 9 o clock, and that was that. The room was great, clean, fresh and great value for money. The next day on the dot of 9 we went over for breakfast, it was lovely, really tasty, the chap who served us was very pleasant. So a mixed bag really. A very off putting first impression which is a shame as everything else was really good. Opposite the pub is the green, inside the pub you will find the dragon.

Stayed in the accommodation on site for a night. Accommodation was fine but dated with old mattress that was bumpy. However the landlady as mentioned in other reviews was rude and miserable. We saw another couple leave after she was rude to them and they were there for about 3 mins. No dogs - except her dog and dogs she knows. She wouldn’t serve us food and snatched menu out from me , because she said she was full but there were many empty tables. Drinks over priced. Other staff were nice though. In the morning somone else in the accommodations had booked breakfast but there was no one about , at check out we couldn’t find anyone either.

Booked a room here the day before arrival, which to be honest, due to circumstances beyond my control had to cancel early on the day before arrival. Arrived yesterday with my gf, walked into the bar, and ordered 2 drinks whilst saying I had booked a room. But which I cancelled but need the room now please if available. Bar man looked at me blankly and said your the guy who tried to cancel, I sad yes but now we do require the room. Sat down with drinks, to then have a woman (I presume the barman/managers wife) shuffle over to our table. After a long and boring conversation about who booked what and when and who cancelled and why. I said we do require the room after all, she then murmured something about having to put the radiators on then shuffled off. After shuffling back she she said “so you do want the room?” I said yes please if available, she said well can you pay now! In mid pint I do not like to be interrupted, so I said I will pay after I have finished my drink thanks…..shuffles off. Shuffles back…She then delivered the fantastic line “you don’t know whether your coming or going do you” I sipped my pint of neck oil and laughed and said “I do we’re going” and it is possible for someone to cancel and then rebook. We drunk up and left! Pros Lovely little resident dog think he was a terrier, nice lil fella! Maybe employ him behind the bar? 😂 Cons awful attitude from bar staff/management Very bates motel/hills have eyes vibe for the film buffs who may read this review. Typical small village pub/hotel locals all crowded rnd the bar with happy smiling shuffler above, then the your from not round here routine to me any my gf. Picked on the wrong guy here though! Recommendation We drank our drinks which were nice, then booked in one minute, to stay at meadow farm hotel. 1 mile away, Great smiley faces of staff greeted us on arrival, had a lovely meal and a few drinks. Room is clean, spacious, and value for money. Avoid the green dragon inn!! Much nicer places/ppl near by.

A lovely village green pub in Redditch. I have read the reviews whilst in the pub many of which made me giggle. I think all the things here provide that charm that is hard to find these days. I ordered food which was delicious and I found the land lady to be very sweet and helpful. Its very peaceful here, I will deffo be back :)

Good parking, lousy beer choice, Hobsons if you like it. No toilet paper in the room and nowhere to buy.

2 star as the girl who served us was nice. Not dog friendly. Do Not Bring dogs. It means owner has a dog who is friendly (to people only) very evil towards other dogs. Avoid if you want be bring dog inside

Lovely independent pub with fantastic Sunday roast.

We had a lovely meal once again tonight. Food was hot and tasty. Homemade pies are delicious and fish perfectly cooked. Friendly staff, nothing was too much trouble. We will definitely be back.

Good food and the girls serving we nice but THAT Landlady!! She has just lost two customers instantly. We took our dog, as you do to country pubs and were told off for not reading the signs on the door to ring ahead. We were forced out of one room and told to sit in the bar area due to people being allergic to dogs. Meanwhile her old little scruffy dog is allowed to run freely around. I understand...her rules her pub but she constantly walked around the pub telling anyone that would listen to us not reading the signs. She even sat at the table next to us with other customers making her jibes. We felt unwelcomed, uncomfortable and couldn't wait to leave. Rude on the highest level. Grumpy old dragon the pub should be called. I feel sorry for the staff and other customers. Probably why it's so empty. A real shame. Sunday lunch ruined. I never leave reviews, especially negative ones but I had to this time. Stay away!! So many other pubs in the area that deserve your business.

Avoid. We tried twice to visit this pub but both times were pushed out by the very elderly landlady. We had half our drinks left and stood staring at us until we left. Very unwelcoming and unfriendly. The opposite of what you want in local country pub. Also stank damp so couldn’t even face the thought of eating there!

My partner, our dog and myself were made to feel very welcome by the land lady and staff. Very attentive and friendly service. Lovely food and atmosphere. Why is this place so quiet? Been twice for Sunday lunch and we had the place almost to ourselves. Its a superb country pub in the picture box little village of Sambourne. Food was spot on, service was excellent. Highly recommended. *****

Excellent country pub worth calling in

Picked up our take away (lockdown). Really nice to have proper home cooked pub grub to take home and reasonably priced. I think this will be our new go to take away.

Only allowed take aways at the moment. These have been very good and well presented. Always have excellent food here so not a surprise that the take away service is so good.

Avoid at all costs. Me and a friend called in for a quick drink on the way home but as soon as we walked through the door we were stared at by the four locals sitting near the bar and when we went to order a drink the landlady simply grunted ‘What ya want?’. The whole place had a horrible atmosphere, we weren’t greeted with a smile so simply cancelled our order and walked straight back out. If you’re looking for a friendly welcome, do not go anywhere near this place.

The Green Dragon is unique and is situated at the heart of the delightful village of Sambourne. It has a warm, welcoming and friendly atmosphere and excellent food together with a good range of beers. Also, dogs are welcome.

Haven’t been here for a long time, but the food is still very good with a varied choice of menu to peruse. Not the quickest service, but they appear to be short staffed. Will certainly go back again soon.

Attended a wake, excellent food, tea and coffee available but coffee was cold

Being in the area we called at the Green Dragon for a bite to eat. We decided on the Cod and chips and I must say it was excellent. The fish was fresh with lovely crispy batter which the chief prepares himself Will definitely be going back in the future. Compliments to the chief.

Rubbish food, rubbish beer, rubbish service, rude owners. Food tasted like it was out of a McDonalds skip. Beer pipes not flushed through with water. Awful Awful Awful Never again.

The Green Dragon at Samboune used to be a thriving, busy, happy pub, always had regulars who could be sure of their welcome. Sadly the management now do not seem to care if customers are happy, a shame because the food is usually good, reasonably priced, but the service and attitude towards customers is awful. After a lifetime of patronising this pub with friends with parties of people, I no longer go there, they do not deserve my custom.

Went with friends for a Saturday night meal they were not busy whilst the food was good to take two and half hours with most people having main courses is rediculous. On the way out we were informed by the lady dealing with the money the we were 37 p short we do not understand how we could be considering we left a tip.We will not be returning.

We live locally to the Green Dragon Inn and over the years have enjoyed many walks to the Inn for refreshments and a light snack. We now find ourselves totally irritated by the current landlady who has been there for approx. 15 years. She has been extremely unpleasant over the years but we have attempted to talk to her and build a relationship. There is a hand written note on the door advising customers to let the establishment know if you're bringing a dog into the Inn. We have always adhered to this rule without incident. Today, I was not given the chance to adivse anyone before I was confronted by the landlady telling me off for not letting her know I was bringing my dog in at the same time as scorning 2 bicycle riders for sitting at the wrong table as it was one of many reserved for diners. Totally empty of diners!Today was the final blow. We will not be visiting the Inn again. The landlady is miserable, moody and extremely rude.A real shame as it could be, as it once was, a truly busy and welcoming Inn in a fabulous location

Called in mid week for early dinner. Good menu choice and if you order before 7.30pm there is a 20% discount on main meals weekdays. Food excellent. Couldn't fault it at all. Good size portions, very nicely presented, excellent flavours and hot temperature. Young waiting staff helpful. Just a little niggle. I thought the interior of the pub could do with more light. However highly recommended and will definitely be visiting again.

Puede que algunos clientes no hayan quedado contentos por algunas razones personales, pero tras 5 días allí en unas vacaciones, puedes apreciar si un sitio es realmente bueno o si tu opinión es resultado de un momento fugaz de brillantez o de sobrecarga, etc. Hay que tener en cuenta que en esta zona los camareros no están formados de escuela de hostelería, así que conviene ser educado con ellos, como en cualquier lugar desde luego. Nosotros estamos acostumbrados a ser tratados genial aunque seas un maleducado, por profesionalidad, pero no tiene porqué ser así en todas partes ni debería ser lo normal. Para empezar vimos que el restaurante siempre estaba lleno, desde lunes a domingo, tanto en los almuerzos como las cenas siempre estaba lleno de gente de los alrededores y más de un coche que venía de cierta distancia, se ve que el sitio es bien reconocido en el sur de Inglaterra, y tiene motivos bien claros para ello. Probamos casi toda la carta y varios de los vinos y cervezas que ofrecían y eran verdaderamente buenos y todo fresco o recién hecho, en especial los platos más elaborados como las verduras al horno y los postres como el Ginger sponge cake, una auténtica maravilla digna de un restaurante de 4 tenedores. La carta de vinos era bastante amplia y digna. Los desayunos bien abundantes y variados.El dormitorio estaba al lado de un pequeño prado al que daba por una puerta de cristal que dejaba ver el precioso paisaje, y nos íbamos a la cama a una habitación silenciosa donde no se oía absolutamente nada, en una cama supercómoda y en una habitación donde no se echaba de menos nada, tal vez un armario, como en toda Gran Bretaña, pero eso no existe en todo el país. Todo nuevo y bien limpio. La ubicación del Green Dragon Inn está muy bien para ver las Costwolds, así que desde aquí se puede ver desde la cuna de Shakespeare hasta Bath muy cómodamente. El Dragon Inn tiene un enorme parking y caben todos los coches que puedan llegar. Respecto al trato y la educación del personal, que parece ser una familia, todos fueron muy educados y con excelente trato, amables y no nos metieron prisa para la comanda. Tampoco tuvimos problemas para dejar las maletas pese a que llegamos muy temprano respecto a la hora habitual y así no perdimos nada de tiempo para ver lugares ese día. Pudimos comprobar que algunos clientes tenían perritos y los dejaron entrar con su can, sin problema alguno. Aunque en la región los camareros suelen ser lentos en comparación con los sevillanos, no fue el caso en este local. Los precios son excelentes en relación a la calidad, por lo que recomendamos francamente el Green Dragon Inn para los que quieran visitar la zona o simplemente cenar por allí. Es de los pocos lugares donde la comida vegetariana está verdaderamente buena. Por supuesto la carne es fantástica. Las cantidades son bien generosas, a diferencia de la ciudad.

My wife and i visited for lunch. The pub is an Olde Worldly Pub serving good Pub food. They also do lighter meals for two at £16.00p The wine list is very reasonably priced but does not detract from the quality. Real ale is available. Service is good, friendly and efficient. A very pleasant lunch.

We had a really lovely evening. Food was excellent, served promptly. Waitress was lovely. We took the time and effort to speak to the staff and found them to be pleasant. I would visit again.

Rudest staff ever encountered. Don’t deserve customers. After ordering drinks in the bar they took a dislike to our dog. The owner then ignored us and asked the poor bar lady if we had asked permission to bring the dog into the pub. We felt humiliated, the owner couldn’t even talk Toni’s and explain her problem directly. Will never go there again:

Have driven past this pub so many times and saw the empty car park and felt we needed to support a local pub after moving into the area. However we went into the bar for a drink and given a Luke warm greeting, we then ordered a drink. The barmaid saw we had a dog and immediately went into panic mode as it seems from the owner that we needed to have asked permission to take our dog into a country pub because the very overate landlady thought her poor old pooch was going to go into attack mode or something similar. We left swiftly after feeling as welcome as a fart in a space suit. I feel this establishment is doomed to fail

We had a family party nearby and our guests had booked four rooms. Our party began at 1pm and our guests were not allowed into the booked accommodation until 6pm. When the time came, my brother in law had an argument about a booking, another had an argument about the price (Which was NOT what the booking had said)

What a great Sunday lunch, super good, served on hot plates ( always a good sign ) with a separate dish of mixed vegetables. I had pork and my wife had turkey, thick portions of meat. Nothing to much trouble for staff who made sure we had everything we wanted. High recommended.

We arrived as a coach load of camra members having booked in for beer and optional lunch. The land lady ignored our long queue and serves the locals. When w objected the other bar person, her son I believe told us his locals were more important than a one off coach party. he then tried to tell us he did not say that although 3 of us heard him. Later in the day other people in another pub told us they were renowned for their rudeness Shame the beer was good as was the food for those who had it.Needs to be customer friendly

Having moved in nearby, popped in hoping to find a nice local

My mum had been brought to this pub by my grandparents for her 21st birthday and hadn't been back in the intervening 59 years, so we thought we'd re-enact that event for her 80th. The evening got off to a slightly surreal start - when we got there at 1755 the pub was in total darkness, only to spring into life a couple of minutes after 1800, like something from a horror film. There are a couple of negative reviews on Trip Advisor but I can report that we found the food to be excellent, and the staff friendly. I enjoyed a couple of pints of Hobson's. It just goes to show that you shouldn't believe everything you read on-line. We stayed over and the accommodation was basic but clean and good value - but this score is primarily based on the pub/dining experience. Most importantly my mum had a great time.

Visit the Green Dragon very regularly and have never had a bad meal. The fish and chips is a particular favourite.

If you want a good old fashioned pub that hasn't been spoiled by an expensive pub chain making it into a yuppie,s paradise then this is for you, reasonable priced good portioned meals,service quick and efficient,lovely old fashioned unspoilt interior,good range of beers,one slight quibble, could have done without the resident dogs in the dining area begging for food!
