My wife and I sometimes come here for lunch on Sunday or occasionally stop for dinner. The buffets (both cavery & chinese) offer a good selection and are well stocked. One of out favourite local eateries.

The restaurant at The Great Eastern is now Indian, called Monza's Place. I took my elderly mother there for an early Saturday meal. She is not familiar with Indian Food and the owner was very patient explaining all the different foods. In the end we ordered 2 meals for one, one quite mild for my mother and one more spicy for myself. The amount of food was amazing. The starter was 2 large onion bhajis each, the main was rice, curry, Bombay potatoes and naan bread each. The portions were so big we ended up taking a lot of it home which then served my mother for a further 2 meals. The décor is lovely and the restaurant was very relaxing. There were only a few tables empty so I would suggest booking if you wanted to make sure of a table. I would certainly recommend this restaurant.

This restaurant has a new name and is now an Indian restaurant called Monza's Place. Monza is the chef/owner. It is a stylish modern restaurant tastefully decorated with the tables not too close to each other. I had a takeaway last night. The service was very friendly, a drink I ordered came promptly and the food wasn't far behind, everything is cooked from fresh so there may be delays in busy times but they say they present quality rather than fast food. They do too, the meal was good, flavour excellent and the quantities were perfectly acceptable. There are cheaper places but one expects to pay a little extra for the quality. Some people might say the korma was a little lacking in the number of prawns and both the korma and madras were a little runny but otherwise excellent. The rice and sag ponir were superb. I will definitely go back.

Visited this restaurant with friends for a pre Christmas get together. The writing was on the wall from the moment we entered. The Barmaid had no idea how to pour a pint, and could not operate the till. After a significant time, we got our drinks, and sat down in the Restaurant, which I have to say has been beautifully refurbished, it had been known in the past as something of a dump. Waitress arrives to take our orders from the very sparse menu. As the orders progressed around the table, it became quite obvious that some of us would not be getting our first choice, they ran out of Steaks, New York Chicken, and later in the evening Carlsberg Lager, and eventually also ran out of Stella Artois Lager too. So orders placed we sit back and wait. The setting was around the magnificent round table, which allows real conversations to flow. Starters arrive, all OK, I had a prawn cocktail, and let's face it, it's not that big an ask to get that right. Main courses arrived, pretty sure the New York Chicken was either pre-cooked and warmed, or microwaved. The Chicken was dry, and not that tasty, frankly mediocre, as were the Steaks. The waitress was positive and attentive, however we were the only people in the Restaurant, so no pressure. This is a new venture, and this could just be teething problems, but it does not present a good impression for first time visitors. The evening passed pleasantly enough, however the food was expensive, mediocre at best, choice was poor, and they may not have what they are offering in stock. I wish them luck, however I won't be hurrying back.

There were four of us (2 couples) we had both had a long day and needed some good food. We had booked the previous week so we would be guaranteed a place. We arrived to not be greeted by anyone and after having to find someone were eventually taken to the restaurant. There was 1 table with a family on it who left more or less as we sat down. The waitress was OK pleasant enough young girl, for me it seemed like they were all ready to go home and call it a night (8pm). The order was Salmon, 2 x lamb shanks and a beer battered fish and chips wine and beer. the girl went away with my friends order as she likes the salmon skin to be seared so it is crisp and edible. the girl came back and said that couldn't be done???? so it came as it would normally come. my lamb shank tasted ok but it was just out of a bag with oven or what seemed like oven chips I've had better Aldi lamb shanks, my wife's beer battered cod and chips was soggy and horrible she picked the fish out and left most of it, the beer was £6 a glass and the bottle of wine that my wife and her friend shared gave her a whopping headache. Finally the waitress came over and said "do you want your bill or are you having a desert i.e. I want to go home. spent over £100 on what? I have had better at 2 for £10 down the local pub. would never go back.

To start with, I asked for a bitter. The waitress didn't know what this was (I explained it's a sort of beer). In the end, I ordered a Bud. She asked if I wanted ice, I refused. My wife ordered a tomato juice. She asked for worcester sauce. The waitress was not familiar with this. She asked around, but no one else in the place seemed to know about it. My wife said forget it, but asked for ice. No ice. We ordered cheese and ham toasties. We got cold ham, cold (unmelted) cheese between two slices of toast. We 'enjoyed' these to the sound of the waitress hoovering around our feet. I explained to the waitress that, according to my experience, toasties normally have heated ingredients inside them. She wasn't sure on this herself, but promised to pass the point on to the chef. The chef never appeared to confirm or challenge my assumption. Overall, go there for the experience. But eat first.

Very impressed with the facilities in this establishment. Extremely clean, spacious, and light and airy. Nice Table arrangements very suitable to accommodate not only two diners but also my guide dog. Have now had lunch here on two occasions, very nice food indeed, fresh ingredients beautifully cooked. I am looking forward to a Sunday Lunch here soon. Waitress on both occasions attentive, pleasant, and extremely helpful. Looking forward to going back there. Would Highly recommend. We have already booked for Christmas Day Lunch. Annemarie.

Visited here after an absence of about 2 years and was not too impressed. The hotel refurbishment is very impressive but as the bar work is still going on, it feels a little unwelcoming. The service was poor as the receptionist is also the waitress and bar person, I felt like we were being an inconvenience ordering food. The food was barely average, all a bit slap dash it seems. When we sat down at 1pm, the waitress said she would check if the chef was prepared to do food as he was preparing for a party. Found this a little odd on a Saturday lunchtime and as they still had menu boards up outside. Think we'll leave it a while before returning.

Visiting the place for the first time it looked lovely. We had pre ordered our meals and paid a 50% deposit. On arrival as a group of 6 plus a baby in high chair we were sat at the most enormous round table for 10 that we had to shout across to talk to each other. Not exactly the intimate family meal we'd planned. Apparently they were too busy to seat is anywhere else. It took some time to be served we had to ask for drinks. Then they eventually came closely followed by our pre ordered starters. By this time we'd been seated for about half an hour or so. Our mains however was not served for much longer. I believe we had been there 1 hour 20 minutes before our main meals came out. And the waitresses couldn't make eye contact or stick around long enough for us to ask for more drinks. They just dumped the food and ran off again. Every time we wanted to find staff there was no one around. Eventually the mains were cleared and desert followed shortly after. No offer of drinks or coffees again. A pleasant surprise was the chocolates and a rose for the two mums at the table. But we had to ask for the bill after being here with 2 and a half hours we'd had enough of the irritable toddler we had with us and the huge table we were having to shout at each other to talk. Most annoyingly when we made a comment about the slow service the waitress responded "sorry it's busy". Which made us laugh being as there was only at that point 1 other table seated in the restaurant. Although the food was nice. It was not worth the extended wait and lack of service from waitresses. We won't be returning.

A group of four friends enjoyed a lovely Sunday lunch at this restaurant. Two courses for under a tenner - good value for money! I had delicious, tender roast lamb with all the trimmings, followed by Eton Mess... Scrummy. Service was attentive, without being intrusive. Will definitely return.

We had dinner here this evening, having never been there before, so didn't really know what to expect. Our waitress was also the chef, so we talked in detail about the food, and how everything is home made and mostly locally sourced. So many "Thai" restaurants in this area are mediocre at best - it's obvious when they've just bought a bulk pack of spring rolls and chucked them in the fryer. This place is a million miles from that - the toon tong (vegetables wrapped in filo pastry) starter was fresh and tasty, the vegetable mussaman curry was lovely and rich but I should have asked for it to be a little spicier. The Penang curry was gorgeous - a perfect blend of spiciness and deep flavours. Even the coconut rice and egg fried rice were great. Happily, the menu is reassuringly short - as it should be when everything's fresh. We will definitely be back - maybe for one of their Thai buffet nights. I am SO glad that this area finally has a decent Thai restaurant! Thank you, Great Eastern Hotel!
