The Great Baddow Barn in Chelmsford

There was 11 adults & 5 children, so considering we were a large party, the food came out quick, hot & nice. Great little play area for the little ones. Only a small area but for free it was a great little addition & we will defiently be back. Pub was nice & clean, staff excellent. Thankyou

Came here for the first time today. I had jacket potato that was very small with hardly any beans or cheese. On rating it found a rathe large black lump inside at the bottom of the minature potato so didn’t notice it until later. Also saw a rather tall man with thick dark hair and dirty clothing go into the kitchen area and cone out with food!!!! Very poor hygiene , will not be eating there again!!!!! Shame as it looks a nice pub.

Had a fabulous lunch, staff were amazing, very helpful and polite, food was delicious. The deserts were to die for expecially the millionaires cheesecake

I come into the Great Baddow Barn with my Mum and Dad for Mother’s day and couldn’t compliment the staff any better! Food come out more quickly than expected and was very hot and scrumptious. Will definitely be coming back!

Had such a great evening with the family here and totally recommend for a quality nice meal and beer for a great price! Can say thank you in particular to Gracie - she was so helpful and worked hard for us demanding crew! Thank you

Great team at the Baddow Barn! Staff are attentive and helpful. Gracie helped us the whole time we were there and we have 0 complaints. Food is cheap and cheerful, big portion sizes & the atmosphere is warm and welcoming. Will definitely be going back!

We booked a table in advance for Mothers Day which incidentally coincided with my wife's 50th birthday. I even visited in person in the week to "scope the setting" and request a suitable table in a suitable location had we the choice. I said my preference was the mezzanine and it was taken on board by the young gentleman. We received a phone call the day before confirming the reservation and were told our table placement was in a booth! On the day we were shown to the booth, located in the children's area evidently as there was a screen with CBeebies on!! I approached the staff and requested we get moved (bearing in mind we're 6 adults, it's Mothers Day, a 50th birthday, and it was really quiet. I reminded the staff of the mezzanine and was told "of course, it's free, there are no reservations and you can sit where you want"'. Go figure. Great start..not. Next disappointment was the food. Very standard at best, served extremely quickly which betrayed it was all made ahead of time and not fresh. The pale green/grey peas and the hard fried eggs confirmed the "2nd hand" freshness!! Shocking. The serving staff were clearly inconvenienced as it seemed a drag when we enquired of cutlery and sauces. Concerning, being Mothers Day it was extremely quiet where most venues in the area were fully booked for the day! I know, because I was making enquiries weeks in advance. I will accept we could've done better in selecting a venue fit for the occasion if we expected 5 star service, menu etc. We really aren't about that and just wanted a value for money nice family meal experience. It fell dismally short of that and I don't believe folk there were even aware of the mediocrity of their service and our experience. Fortunately we have a sense of humour and denigrated this to a joke. Sorry folks this has to be said, and I hope it is seen as both a reflection of our disappointment and an opportunity to do better. We were in yesterday. 2 New Yorkers. Table 38. The food was nearly cold ,Chicken like rubber. Chips/Fries cold and limp. Quick service. Hence food cold. Pre prepared sitting on hot plate a While. Shame. Nice Venue and staff

Had a meal with my husband and son this evening. Food and service was exceptional. What really impressed me was, a member of staff had the decency to phone me to tell me they had no roast dinners left.

We decided to pop out somewhere nearby for a quick lunch before my husband left for work. We decided on Great Baddow Barn as it was the nearest to home. I’m very happy with our choice as we had an amazing roast dinner and meat pie. The food was simply delicious and fantastic value for money! I think this is going to become a regular occurrence!!

Good stop after a days shopping, food was ok staff were friendly, they didn't have the sea bass which annoyed the Mrs would have given more stars if full menu was available.

I have dined many times at this pub. Usually the experience is good. My son booked a table for 26th January 2025 to celebrate my 79th birthday. Our party consisted of 5 adults and one 12 year old. We were shown to a table next door to the toilets and opposite a very noisy machine that many noisy children were playing with. A young blonde woman was very helpful and after a short time moved us to a better table. My son used the app to try to order 4 Sunday roasts and was informed that turkey was unavailable. We changed to roast beef and then he was informed that beef was also unavailable. It was 2pm and the pub was about 50% full. We chose alternative meals, 2 bottles of wine and some beers and soft drinks. My son, his daughter and I had mixed grill . The chicken breast was very dry. My grand-daughter couldn't eat hers. My steak had a dark (probably human) hair about 2 inches long attached to it. I showed it to a male server who said "Oh...at least its not one of mine." That was the only reaction and so my son paid the bill and we left. I should have taken a photo of the hair but didn't want to spoil the birthday party atmosphere.

Decent little ‘no frills’ chain pub. Ticks all the boxes for me, since I started coming, darts, footy, and very affordable grub. I like how everyday they have an offer on with the food, gets you to try stuff you usually wouldn’t. Had the 11oz rump today for ‘grill Mondays’ was only £11 with all the trimmings Good selection of lagers, peroni, Morrwti- also have stellar

Not too busy but seemed to be a lot of staff all very young but we were served quickly enough our food came in good time and was well coooked I would prefer not to have to collect my own cutlery, napkins and sauces etc especially as there where plenty of staff on a quiet night but overall a nice experience

Service by lorna was amazing, considering it was extremely busy she made sure our experience was perfect ! Food was great, will be coming back !!

Been here lots of times before but feel the quality of the Sunday roast beef is not as good as before or the amount of meat, plus it needs to be served hotter with horseradish.

The team of young girls on were very contentious and cheery and the food was a great standard as always. We like to come and use our club card reward vouchers and it’s always a top pick for my 11 and 13 year old boys

Our Christmas was ruined they got our PRE-ORDERED meals wrong,I was served seven prawns and a slice of salmon on a slice of untoasted bread and told that was a prawn cocktail! The whole meal was cold and looked bland and colorless and we were sat on a tiny little table against a wall and made to feel less than special eating clearly frozen food for 60 blooming quid absolutely AWFUL.

Just had a drink and packet of crisps.

I had the beef roast dinner. The roast potatoes were tiny and dry, the yorkshire pudding was very dense and chewy and the carrots could have done with being boiled for a little bit longer. Apart from that it was a good meal with the family. The atmosphere was cheerful, the staff were friendly and the restaurant was clean.

Really enjoy going to Baddow Barn. Either with friends for a drink, or with family for a meal. It's friendly and the food is lovely. Great prices, great service.

We had relaxed meal with relatives, staff very friendly and courteous, nothing is too much trouble. Food was great as always. We have christmas dinner here every year.

I had an amazing experience! The food was delicious, The service was attentive and friendly, especially lorna she was very friendly and attentive making us feel right at home. The atmosphere was cozy and inviting, perfect for a relaxed meal. Highly recommend it for anyone looking for a great dining experience!

My Korean Chicken Burger was wonderful. My mother's desert was made for sharing.

I BOOKED A TABLE FOR 4 ADULTS AND A CHILD (AGED 11) AT GT BADDOW BARN. THE STAFF WERE VERY WELCOMING. WE HAD THE FESTIVE MEAL. THE FOOD WAS GOOD AND THE SERVICE WAS FINE. MY GRANDAUGHTER COMPLAINED THAT HER TURKEY WAS TOO DRY. BUT SHE'S ALWAYS DIFFICULT TO PLEASE. 2 OF THE ADULTS HAD THE TURKEY CHOICE AND THEY WERE HAPPY. I HAD STEAK AND MY WIFE CHOSE SALMON. WE WERE VERY HAPPY WITH OUR MEALS. WE CHOSE A RED AND A WHITE BOTTLE OF WINE, THEY ARRIVED QUICKLY AND WAS GOOD. IT WAS A VERY PLEASANT EXPERIENCE AND GOOD VALUE FOR MONEY. I ALSO WILL GET A £10 VOUCHER TO SPEND IN JANUARY AS PART OF THE DEAL, ALTHOUGH IT HASN'T ARRIVED TO DATE.

Good food decent menu. Nice pleasant venue huge bonus of indoor soft play for little ones.

Cold food, no staff, missing items from the roast, tables dirty. Anything we asked was too much trouble for the staff.

The food is actually Ok but the service is AWFUL !!!!!!!!! We walked in and stood at the bar waiting for the girl (who was dressed casually) to get off the phone so we could order some drinks. She knew we were waiting but decided to continue her conversation elsewhere and walked off and left us standing there. She eventually returned but chose, again, to ignore us. Fortunately, a young man came over and served us. Later on, we went back to the bar and same girl ignored us AGAIN. Fortunately, another girl, who looked like the manager (more appropriately dressed and wearing a lanyard) promptly approached us and took our order.

Nice meal and service was good as usual. But was very cold. The doors were open and the water and hand drier were cold. Would still go back, as we go there a lot.

Visited the Great baddow barn yesterday as a family of 5 and the staff were amazing. It was our first time and the staff were incredibly helpful with letting us know on what the process of ordering was. The food come out really quick and was so lovely and hot. We will definitely be back again.

First visit to this Hungry Horse- food was excellent but experience marred by group of noisy kids ,well being kids but running wild, booting the balls from the ballpit around etc ....Staff seemed to be frustrated by this which apparently affected their manner with no patience shown to other customers but took no action as parents didn't seem to care. Very large and roomy building but quieter areas not as well lit and at least one dedicated section where under 18s not allowed. Very good daily deals for meals and Blue Light discount available but not in conjunction with other offers. Desserts were late in arrival, 15 minutes after coffee served and although apologetic no reason given.

Food was alright. We had the budget fish and chips and it didn't have much flavour. Would go back to try some other dishes. The barn looks great and feels friendly. Went with 2 under 2, perfect for a quiet spot on a weekday lunch time.

Better vegan options would be good. Why is a spinach & falafel burger not vegan? Without the dairy sauce you would think it would be vegan. But no. They checked. Not all vegans want something to taste like meat so I chose the only other option for me. Mushroom pie. The pie crust was nice and crispy. The sauce in the pie was not to my taste but at least I could dip the mushrooms in the gravy boat. Better to keep it in the jug and dip rather than pour it over :) Other meals in the group were said to be ok although highly salted and some were cold. It wasn't just our peas! Looking at other plates on the way out, all the peas were left on the plate. We first tried ordering on the app but it wasn't easy. I.e. Searching for the children's pasta. It was a mandatory bullet point selection with gluten free as the only option. The place was quite cold but you can understand that with the high ceilings. Overall the staff were fantastic. So friendly and accommodating. Even though they were busy they did everything to make our visit a happy one.

100% recommend Great Baddow Barn to everyone if you love a chill, friendly atmosphere. The staff here are all lovely and very helpful. I came for some lunch with some work friends and it was all amazing! I got the ham, cheese & egg melt which was worth it.

Came back and its gone down hill it's nit what it used to be. Food wasn't good and I couldn't eat it all as it really wasn't nice. The staff are useless, you ask for the table to be wiped and its super sticky and they just ignore you. Will not be coming back and won't be recommending

I went for a lovely meal with my boyfriend last night. The food was amazing, the staff were very friendly especially Stacy and Lorna and helped us out massively. We both got the curry and drink deal for £8! Such a great deal. I would definitely recommend great baddow barn to everyone!

Bloody horrible dinner wss crap roast dinner ..never again place ws dirty an toilets Not recommend thus place its ok if you want kids in restaurants screaming place down ...since it's turned into hungry horse gibe down hill

Food was terrible, I had a vegetable lasagne and the cheese on top wasn't even melted. I would have sent it back but I was with two young kids so I couldn't hang around. We went to the outside play area and there was lots of rubbish around despite the restaurant being really quiet so doesn't look like anyone cleans up from previous days. I don't have very high standards for a budget restaurant but I would expect food to at least be cooked and rubbish to be picked up.

Here now, Such a shame! 😞 been here before but not for ages so was hoping it might have improved.....what looks like an eyelash is on the side of my lasagne... lasagne has a sloppy consistency very strange! My daughter had a long hair in her chips! Table is sooooo sticky which is gross, in general the whole place looks like it is desperate for a deep clean! Staff seem a bit too relaxed which probably contributes to some of the above and some strange shouting etc coming from the kitchen area......it would be interesting to see the state of the kitchen and wether people preparing food actually wear hair coverings? Overall very disappointing! A massive shame and a wasted opportunity for a restaurant with tonnes of potential to be a great family friendly restaurant and probably the only one in chelmsford with amenities for children! Id love to see this place thrive but ive lost hope in it now, Shame! 🤷🏼‍♀️ The only thing good about it was it's so cheap but I guess the saying "you pay for what you get" should be this places motto 🤷🏼‍♀️

We visit this restaurant quite a lot as its cheap and cheerful It is very hit and miss had good meals and also had bad Place never seems busy so not sure why sometimes it is bad It is such a shame it is a beautiful barn that really needs a lot of TLC, staff are lovely but the building needs work on it to be honest is disgusting to look at so much work could be improved To be honest either greene King need to come and renovate or they should close the doors We often say someone needs to come and buy the building and renovate it could be beautiful Things are falling down, wires trailing Outside at the front bushes are not cared for need I go on Come on sell up and get a decent restaurant in to renovate or improve it's not hard We came tonight on a Saturday night and it was a ghost town with love this place should be heaving I mean if wetherspoons can do it We came on a Wednesday night and the same but that night they had run out of everything at 7pm! Improve or move on!

Nice little family pub for casual dining

Food was awful. shame as so much hear for the kids outdoor park and indoor soft play. I sent my dinner back as couldn't eat it was burnt and over done. Wont be back, wouldn't recommend

The only thing about this place that was good yesterday was the price my sons had the belly ache all day there was food in the garden sourpumded bu flies when we got there moved the food ourselves to order food our food came stayed there the entire time flies absolutely everywhere now I’m worried I may have to take my son to hospital with possible food poisoning, I would not recommend

Not a good start when the table is sticky and the only available cutlery needed cleaning before you would want to use it. Thankfully plenty of serviettes to clean it with. Food nice, large portions and reasonably priced

Lamb kofta on flatbread with feta and salad. Huge!! Make sure you are hungry when ordering this dish. Very nice.

We went for a meal here some weeks ago now and it's been on my mind to write a review as some of the staff here really deserve a mention. I've got 4 hungry horse pubs closer to me but go to this one because of the ladies that work here. Ali has served us several times and has always been really friendly and helpful and a pleasure to talk to. Amy and Evie were great too. When I rang with some questions Stacey was most helpful and answered my questions happily which actually made me decide to visit the restaurant the first time we went there. Having friendly helpful staff really does make a difference to the whole dining experience and definitely makes you want to return.

Food was terrible: cold, dry and/or overcooked. Ordered a mixed grill - all of which was either overcooked, undercooked or soggy. The burger was dry and my children’s dinners were cold and dry. We then waited 30 minutes for puddings for us to find that the crumble had no flavour, had clearly been microwaved to boiling point and drowned in custard. Considering it was a quiet evening, this cannot of taken that long. One positive is that the staff were friendly.

We went with family as we were visiting down south as we live in the north . I orderd fish and chips , husband orderd might mixy grill mum orderd the sunday roast and the childs roast . Food came my fish was plaice not cod it was all dried up and black inside the peas were raw uncooked . Husbands meat was dry and chewy and freezing and mums and childs dinner the meat was like rubber the vedge was freezing cold and the roast poatotoes were raw . We did complain and manager gave a refund for the roast and fish but not for the rest seemed unfair as all the food was appoling . They said please dont be put of and come again but doubt i will ruined the meal really .

The workers were extremely polite and helpful no air con in side room sadly we came home and had bad tummies all four of us

Though they were under staffed tonight, service was as polite as possible under the stressful circumstances and the food arrived hot and delicious. All drinks were served with smiley faces in spite of the rush as well 😄 thank you!

I have been here a few times now it’s always been nice , but lastnight I was disappointed we booked a table , table we got was covered in pepper , we was told meal would be about 30 mins wait that was fine we got a drink , meal came out I had ordered gammon egg chips , and a mixed grill when it arrived we both had no eggs so I went to ask to be told we haven’t any , why was that told to me on ordering also the peas were hard and cold . Steak was medium rare but more like a burger well done , but we ate most of it ordered a dessert one was still frozen so sorry last nights meal was not enjoyable

We ordered gammon egg and chips no egg just a onion ring , when I asked why they said we haven’t any , I said why not say when I ordered my meals . Few times we have eaten here todays was the worst meal we have had . Steak was hard not medium rare peas hard and cold and the chips we did have were not good also dessert was frozen still

Wow half an hour plus to get served for a drink. Another 20mins to order food . Then 1hr 11mins for food to arrive Staff very apologetic but this is a sign of poor management. Absolute shambles felt sorry for young staff .

The burgers were great, the garden is nicely kept and the play areas, indoors and outdoors, are a great feature of this pub the only thing I can say on the negative is they missed 2 items off my order and I had to go and ask them to check what I ordered but other than that it's a great hidden gem pub and kids eat for £1 on Mondays

I recently visited the barn, the food was amazing and the service was great. Waitress Evie was fantastic and helped us all during our visit. Food was hot and arrived quick, toilets were clean! I would definitely visit again :)

Wow! Had no idea there was such a fantastic pub in the area! Small soft play made it entertaining for our three and 8-year-olds. The place has separate areas for those with children and where only above 18 are allowed - so it is your choice if you want to sit near noisy kids 😀 Excellent fast service food was tasty. The child-friendly area has diner-like sitting (like booths) with high backs - like it to have a personal space as a family. These booths also have small tvs with cbbc playing with subtitles. Plenty of parking.

Great Baddow Barn is a large family pub, with plenty of parking, parking entrance is to the left of the building if looking from the road, we went past and had to turn around. We visit Tuesday after Bank Holiday weekend and couple of the food items I picked was off menu, the food was excellent value. Both staff members who we interactive with were very friendly and helpful. There is outside play area and the actual barn area is 18+ only so room for all. Overall it looks impressive but there are bit that look an update is needed. The best part of our visit was the desserts.

The food is ok, just ok. Cheap and cheerful.. They also managed to send the wrong food, so I ended up eating after my daughter. While queuing to order, the staff just walk off and start emptying the dishwasher and clean the floor (and do not wash hands after) as if your not standing there waiting. The place is very dirty and tables are very sticky. Food on carpet under tables. I informed a team leader the soap dispensers where broken, one was laying on the side leaking soap everywhere and the others pump mechanism wasn't working. This still hadn't been resolved by the time we was leaving. Dirty nappy on the table in the garden was the icing on the cake! Disgusting and won't be returning.

Incredibly good value for money. The food was good but lacked some salt, but the service and atmosphere were just amazing. Super friendly but not overbearing staff and gorgeous old barn building. loved it. would go again when visiting the area.

Good grub in this place but I've ordered bacon bergers befor and they're isn't much bacon. Nice staff

Tasty food. Nice service. That's the positives. Negatives are; we both had sizzler dishes, however they were not sizzling upon arrival at the table, and the food could have been hotter, guessing they were waiting for service staff, which was surprising as we were there before 5pm, also several staff about. Sticky unclean tables (not just ours but adjoining too). I believe the cleaning solution is softening the varnish on the table top. I wiped the table with a napkin using condensation from the ice bucket and the napkin came up brown (see photo). The lights above the bar, at just above head height, and therefore within easy reach, were all full of cobwebs. Considering there is a sign in the toilets claiming "Cleanliness is our high priority ........" it's a shame it didn't extend elsewhere in the premises. We will not be returning.

So so shabby and sticky, staff great but what a bloody waste of a great spot, felt like moving back to uk and running it and not into the ground as has been done.

Ordered nut roast dinner and turkey dinner how the chef could have sent these out is beyond belief never seen roast potato’s like this or burnt nut roast

Could be a good pub but the staff sit together on the same table every time and create an awful atmosphere. Loudest people in the pub and make ordering next drink difficult

Fast friendly service when we had limited time. Shame the indoor and outdoor play areas were both closed, but food came out quick and was decent enough.

I have not visited the barn for years due to several bad experiences but I would just like to say we booked a table for Wednesday evening and I cannot fault anything great service lovely staff food delivered promptly and great value will be going again and will recommend Anne foreman

Came here for lunch with my son! Very clean and tidy inside and my little boy enjoyed the play area also considering the bad weather so it was a bonus! Everything was reasonably priced and the food was lovely and hot when it arrived! All the staff were very friendly and smiley! Overall it was great experience!

Went on a whim as not normally in the area, seriously great food, wonderful decor, the staff are attentive to everyones needs and went above and beyond to make sure our experience was as good as possible, i will be coming back again!

Really good value for money, friendly staff. Great deals on the food. Just a shame the play area was shut as being half term we came for that, but these things happen.
