Visited here based on trip advisor reviews and wasn't disappointed. We ordered mixed grill and pie of the day. The mixed grill was one if the best my brother has had and the pie was delicious. It is a very popular pub so had to wait until a table became available. Wasn't waiting very long. Service from the staff was very good.

Great place lovely foid and staff. Great atmosphere. Top the evening off with a few games of bingo and won.

Lovely pub. Barman a bit dour but ate here two nights on the trot. Lovely fresh fish and chips and you can get a small portion (which is actually fine) for £7.50.

Spent a couple of days in Whitby last week and had an early tea at The Granby. Quite quiet (which is good as far as I am concerned) and food really very good. I had a giant filled Yorkshire pudding (good) and my partner had the homemade steak pie which looked and, apparently tasted, simply amazing. Error on my part it would seem.

Haven't been in for a while, wow what an improvement! We will be back before we leave for home 😁

Called by chance as we were passing and had a lovely roast lunch at a very reasonable price.

Party of 8 pre booked. Limited menu, dinners pretty poor quantity, frozen Yorkies. Over cooked peas and a few cubes of swede and tough beef. Although my meal (a burger) was ok but I had to eat around the edges due to it being still pink, how it was cooked wasn’t an option. I’d have preferred it cooked through. We never even received a courtesy check. The place is ok for drinks just not a Sunday lunch. And specify if you want a burger cooked through.

Come in for a traditional Sunday lunch. Very disappointed. Service was good, bar staff very pleasant. Food arrived and looked like a microwave dinner. Chicken was tough, no veg except peas and roast potatoes. Edible as payed nearly £12 and was hungry. Left feeling robbed

First time booking a table for food.We ordered traditional dinner. One burger (this did look amazing,undercooked but ok) You could find better in the frozen section in the shops gor the dinners. £11.95 for chicken,2 roast potatoes,6 pieces of swede and 2 Yorkshire puds. The best thing was the 62 peas. Which you could have hurt somebody with. Definitely an unhappy customer.

I've ordered a rack of ribs and they absolutely awfull. Most likely they have been boiled, no taste, they are raw, ribs should be cooked and warm. Highly recommend not to choose the rack if ribs. The staff were nice and the service was decent.

Great ale,great food,even chips and gravy is delicious..And the cleanest toilets I have ever seen.Staff are excellent and owner couldnt do enough for you.Old peculier is well maintained and love every visit

En el microondas. . nada de relleno difícilmente. . . salsa grumosa. . pobre hamburguesa. . no pobre lasaña pero muy pequeñas patatas fritas terribles todos los pedacitos diminutos. . . ensalada inexistente. . . tristemente no volverá por la comida. . . personal genial por eso es tan triste

Love this pub .. staff are great but .... we had a couple of meals last year & they were great such good value & very tasty ... 2023.. Have been twice in the last 4 days & sooooooo disappointed... cannot believe the difference.. we has lasagne the 1st time and it was ok but the chips were terrible.. Salad poor ... so disappointed... 2nd time I had the pie which was amazing last time hubby had the burger same again great.. had the same again this time & my pie was horrible hardly any meat tons of gravy the pastry was rock hard like it was warmed in a microwave.. chips were all tiny bits 😪 hubby wasn't impressed either so 👎👎👎 such a shame not be returning.. & such a 😓 lovely pub

Food came out staggered half the party had nearly finished by tge time the last meal arrived. Missing items asked four times and they never arrived. Dirty plates left after we'd finished and team didn't seem interested.

Bingo night what a good crack sitting back watching the locals having a good time

A lovely bar, ruined by poor service. The first server disappeared off leaving us there. Then another server came in from outside, took her coat off, and proceeded to be the rudest and most monosyllabic server we've experienced in some time. This was an elderly lady with a sour faced expression, who we gather may be the landlady - quite an unbelievable attitude for someone in a customer service role. We felt uncomfortable, and rushed our drinks and left. Literally as we downed the last mouthful. Mrs Happy dived in, saying "you done? " and whisked the glasses away. She actually sneered at us as we left. It was simply embarrassing. We hadn't complained or been impolite at all, we just wanted a quiet drink before tea and have no idea why we warranted such rudeness. One to add to the 'never again' list, which is a shame as it's a nice environment with good beer. Still, Whitby is full of lovely venues offering great friendly service - something I feel Mrs Happy may one day realise. Choice - a wonderful thing!

Quizás vinimos en una mala noche, ya que habíamos escuchado buenas críticas, sin embargo, la nuestra no era una positiva. Éramos un grupo de cuatro. La mitad de la comida llegó y la otra 5 minutos después la última comida llegó cuando las dos primeras estaban casi terminadas. Tuvimos que pedir cubiertos. A una de las comidas le faltaba algo. Lo pedimos cuatro veces pero nunca llegó. Tristemente evitará en el futuro. El servicio era pobre y los estándares simplemente no estaban allí. Nuestros platos sucios todavía estaban frente a nosotros 20 minutos después de que terminamos.

Excellent Sunday Roast great friendly staff

Absolutely fantastic sunday roast, choice of meat lamb, beef, pork, chicken fresh vegetables, creamy mash roast potato & yorkshire pudding, book in advance highly recommended, very friendly staff.

Met friends here before wandering further into town. A good range of drinks available. Food is also served although we weren’t eating. Friendly staff and a welcoming place to go.

Most of the reviews I can find of this place on Tripadvisor seem to be for it's restaurant. I wanted to redress the balance a bit as I only used it as a hotel and didn't eat there. I can't really fault it as a hotel. The room was nice and clean, the staff were friendly and it was a really good price, in a nice central location. I thought twice about booking as I usually read Tripadvisor reviews carefully before and could only find reviews of the restaurant. But my advice would be not to worry, this as its a great little hotel too. Top tip for any electric car drivers like me, it's 10 minutes walk from West Cliff car park where there are around 8 Connected Kerb AC Destination Chargers.

Been here loads of times over the years and is always a safe bet when it comes to eating out .....

Just spent 2 night's at the Granby in Whitby 5 adult's and 1 child We had the family room and the apartment was absolutely spot on for us all Clean everyone was very friendly and helpful will definitely be back again ☺️

Called into this pub for some food and drink never having been here before. Loved it! It's a traditional style pub, they haven't got multiple tvs linked into non stop football. We had a lasagne, chips, salad and a fish goujon sandwich with chips. All home made food, all big portions and big taste! Food very reasonably priced! Definitely coming back.

£400 straight down the drain, we were meant to have an en-suite in each bedroom allegedly, we have one toilet between 5 of us, they have the music on stupidly loud whilst you’re trying to sleep, food takes an hour to come out, all in all it’s an absolute joke

Awful experience at the Granby. June 2024. A 6 sleeping room, with only one toilet and one shower room just doesn’t add up. Not to the mention, that the toilet door handle is hanging on by a thread and does NOT have a lock. Rooms are very dated and look as though the wallpaper has been stuck on with kids prit-stick! Radiators/heating was on, whilst it’s been 22+ degrees! The booking rooms mention smoke free, however given that there is no designated smoking area for the pub, the population smoking below the rooms at the front of the pub fill the rooms above up with the smell. Here’s a few of my favourites!

Staying in West Cliffe Whitby for the 60s weekend we were recommended to use this hotel to eat at by our B&B. So we rang up and booked a table for two at 17.00. We arrived and ordered two giant yorkshire puddings filled with minced beef, mash and vegs. Well when they arrived they were giant and was filled to the brim ready to add the gravy. We really enjoyed this meal we chose so rebooked for Saturday at 17.30 and this time we had two pan fried salmon meals which again were so tasty and plentiful. So again we booked a table for Sunday at 15.30 to have two lamb roast dinners which was awesome so have done this review to let others know visiting Whitby to try this place to eat at as you won't be dissappointed if you do. a beautful hotel to stay in still say jeff is the top dog cheif the people who run the hotel are amazing drinks food are as allways spot on (taking jeff home with me he dose not know about it yet hahaha) all ready booked for next year price of rooms are spot on rooms well number 3 are nice clean tidy everything what we need i do highly recommend to book location is in the right place plenty of shops close by watch the seagulls if u got food hahaha will be returning thanks granby we shall see you next year

I ordered a hot roast pork sandwich and chips. The pork tasted and smelled awful like it had been sat in a fridge a long time before being reheated. It took it back to the bar and in short the cook said it smelled ok to them but they would refund my money. My reply was that if they thought that then they shouldn’t be in a kitchen as someone would be getting food poisoning. (I am a trained chef). That someone is now me myself, I’ve spent most of the day on the loo and that small amount of that pork is the culprit! Terrible practice and customer service.

Stayed in Whitby for a week, and unfortunately only found the Granby on the last evening. The wife and I had an evening meal, the food was excellent with large portions. Staff were welcoming and very attentive, wsh we had found this place earlier. When we are next in Whitby, we will dine here or try the B & B.

breakfast was good but bit disappointed with the staff, not very polite, didn’t say excuse me when wanting to get past, and put my food on my phone, apart from that good pub!

What a great pub to walk into, live music and it was really good, the man can sing for sure. Quick bar service friendly locals. It's a must if passing! We will be back.

Fish fab 12/10 but frozen chips ...Sunday lunch meat great frozen yorkies ffs your in yorkshire would give it 2 out if 10 live here won't be going again

we booked the granby for a 2 night stay , when we arrived a sign on door read closed for refurb (not a good start) we went inside and it was like a bombsite ,however we were told that the bar would be open that afternoon (which it was) this did not affect the rooms thankfully and were shown to room 2 ,it was a nice room which had a double bed,sofa tea/coffee toilet and shower, most rooms are above the pub itself and they are accessed by narrow stairs , we did not prebook breakfast but decided to have it there anyhow ,the breakfast was very nice £5 for the smaller option ,which is cheaper if you are a resident as its also available to the public, so all in all not too bad here, one thing did surprise us was no one asked if everything was ok once during our stay even when we checked out , maybe goodbye or safe journey would have been nice , would i stay here again the jury is still out

Visited the Granby Hotel while staying in Whitby. What a delight, a traditional pub selling good beer and great food. Not a fancy expensive menu but a great basic pub menu.....Good Honest Food.!!..... Went for lunch one day and had the gammon ,egg and chips. My only complaint would be that it should have come with a bigger plate, the gammon steak was massive. Great food at a great price.

Good old fashioned pub grub…. We had the Granby burger, served with side salad, chips and onion rings, definitely recommend….. Make sure you’re hungry as the portions are generous. Very friendly staff and locals. This must be the best value in Whitby.

Honest pub food at reasonable prices. All tables appeared full initially but landlady was happy to move single regulars to sit together to free up tables for diners. Steak pie, chips and veg with gravy was yummy as was my wife's lasagne .

We had a very hearty evening meal of lasagne and burger, both freshly cooked with all homemade accompaniments. Washed down with a good selection of beers. So good we returned for a full English breakfast and were equally impressed. Real, honest pub food at very affordable prices.

One of our usual haunts when on holiday however tonight utter rubbish Surely a chef or cook would know that Lasagna has bechemel sauce not this one and when the waitress asks you if it's too well done we'll get you another one tells it all wouldn't have given my dog and actually he refused it no apologies after requested money back just handed it back very poor on al levels .Peter J 16/8/2023

Not pleasant!! It states “homemade” though I wouldn’t consider Aunt Bessie’s to be homemade food. Chips were oven chips and 1 order (Salmon) should have come with potatoes, though came with “oven chips”. I guess they must have been “on offer from the local supermarket recently”??? The meat on the Sunday roast had been considerably overcooked. I went several years since and enjoyed it and this was the reason we returned. Not a pleasant experience and certainly wouldn’t recommend!!

If you want a good solid meal, then look no further. There is a good menu, and the portions are (too?) large and very tasty. The beer is good and the staff friendly and organised as far as sorting out tables is concerned. Just remember it's a pub and it has that sort of atmosphere - it's not somewhere for a sophisticated evening out. We were in Whitby five nights and visited the Granby twice - the second time taking other friends with us.

Lovely meal didn't wait to long piping hot and the hamburger was lush the hubby couldn't eat it all neither could I Perhaps maybe a tad less food on the plates They were big portions Will deffo be coming again when next in whitby 👌

After being impressed with the excellent Stokers Cafe was (next door) we nipped in here later in the evening. We had already been disappointed with Papas Fish and Chips and didn’t want another Wetherspoons meal. To say value for money applied here would be the understatement of the year. To summarise. We decided to go for the Roast Dinners. Chicken in our case. The Landlady/Bar Staff recommended the small vs the large roasts. Good advice! Massive portion. Well cooked And hyper good value! The next evening we had the Small Fish and Chips. Once again same as above applied. Fantastic food. Fresh and sorted! This is a traditional style classic decor pub. No frills. Nothing fancy. If you want trendy or bistro this is nit your venue. But if you’re in Whitby. Want a decent meal at classic prices. Go here and hopefully be as impressed as unexpectedly were we.

In Whitby for the weekend and stumbled across this place walking back up to our hotel and as it was dog friendly we decided to go in. Pub was pleasant bar staff were nice and we decided to try the food, have been to place’s before that advertise homemade cooking and been served up microwaved processed stuff, not the case here though. Over 2 nights (Yes we went back the next night) we tried the Mixed grill, Lasagna, Gammon steak and Chicken curry all were genuinely homemade / cooked and in generous portions. I have been fortunate enough with my job to eat in lots of places over the years including some belonging to famous chef’s and even ones with Michelin stars and if there was a star for genuine good value homemade cooking I would certainly give this place one of them

Booked a table for 4 back in August by phone to eat in the lounge area for New Year's eve. Visited early December to confirm booking and was given table number 2 by the manageress. Arrived New Year's eve to our table and someone else...

My partner and I went to The Granby on bonfire night to listen to Falsetto Frank and the Long Men, a really good band, well worth a listen to. The only thing that spoilt it was an old woman facelifted to the hilt insisted on...

I am visiting Whitby for the week and this was my first night here. I read some good reviews and a couple of bad on trip advisor. I was immediately greeted be a very laid back and polite lady behind the bar with lilac hair....

Whilst the decor is a bit tired the food itself was lovely and a very welcome break from majority of restaurants in Whitby just offering fish!
