The Good Catch in Sefton

Expensive.. spent £15.00 and definitely not worth the money. £7.50 for salt & pepper chicken bites that consisted of 6 small pieces of chicken in a tray a few small onions and little or no salt & pepper seasoning. Would be good to be able to add pics, you would see how poor it looked never mind tasted.

Small shop means that when you order you are waiting outside and if the weather's not good! Staff are efficient and food is OK.

Haven't been able to get here for some time and was surprised to see a few negative reviews. Can't think why that was because as usual we had fish & chips and weren't disappointed. Cooked to order as we waited by a nice young man who asked us as we were eating if all was OK, which we were more than happy to let him know it was spot on. We had not long got back from Cornwall and the Good Catch exceeded any fish and chips we had in Cornwall and was certainly better value for money. We found the fish portion slightly smaller than on our last visit, but to be fair that is the case everywhere these days. No complaints from us, good food and service with a smile, what more do you want?

Chips under cooked basically mush and horrible. Salt and pepper chicken tasteless r baby could have done better the pastry on the steak and kidney pie was raw I recommend you definitely don’t come here and find somewhere else to go. Terrible chippy

Great place, superb fish & chips

Not impressed. Chips had hardly any salt and vinegar (how much does it cost to add that?); The curry sauce was that awful stuff with raisins, chips under cooked and soggy, and it was quite pricey. It was close to closing time so I get it, staff are tired, but we don't get charged any less because of that.

I come back to the UK every few years and my first stop is the Acropolis in Ormskirk for the best vid and chips locally. But the good catch is .001 behind! Service efficient professional but not warm and friendly and If the batter was a bit thicker they’d be equal first! Highly recommend and am going again.

Excellent gluten free fish and chips. Just what was needed after a day on the beach in the sun.

The fish was absolutely tasteless. It was so so greasy - the boxes were covered in it too. Chips were just about ok. The worst ever. Never going back.

Food OK, nothing special, service was miminmum. inside benches are a bit precarious, made relaxing a bit difficult. Not sure we'd go again when visiting the area

The staff were visibly cheerful, occasionally breaking into song, contributing to a welcoming atmosphere. Their friendliness made me feel immediately welcome and not rushed. The menu offered sufficient variety to satisfy the regular visitors of the seaside town of Formby. The establishment was clean and orderly, and the food was exceptionally tasty, particularly the cheesy chips and salt-and-pepper squid. Despite numerous visits to Formby, I had never dined at this chip shop before. I won't repeat this mistake, and I plan to visit again when I'm next in the vicinity. I later learnt that the railway station across the road has a car park that patrons of the chip shop can use without charge, though this may require further verification. In summary, this chip shop comes highly recommended, boasting excellent food and affable staff. A great place we came across when going Formby, staff were nice and a variety in choices. The haddock we ordered was nicely fried though wish the batter had more seasoning. We also got the scampi which was of good quality and the large chips which was HUGE portion. Overall enjoyable experience on a nice sunny day to the beach!

VERY disappointing. The fryer tonight needs to learn about oil temperature. Our fish while cooked, had been set in oil far too high. The result, the skin was visible, the batter had turned to frilly edges and the oil was heavily present. NOT pleasant to eat at all. He also had not taken note of the number of customers in the queue and looked at the chip tray to see if there were enough chips. Result, 9 people waiting for their orders too be filled. The young lady serving had noticed this, but the chap had disappeared out the back, returning with a bucked of cut potatoes. We did NOT enjoy our meal and will go further afield to find correctly cooked fish at a reasonable waiting time. Please learn from this.

We had been on Formby beach for the afternoon and looked in trip advisor for nearest fish and chips for an early evening tea. Despite mixed reviews we thought we would give it a try. Haddock was large and freshly cooked, however it lacked any flavour so we assume it was frozen. Batter on top of the fish was ok but underneath a bit stodgy because it was too thick. Chips were nice. Curry sauce was Chinese curry. Shop was well staffed with at least 6 people inc. 1 who appeared to be in charge. Our female server was polite. We wouldn't rate the food as award winning as stated on the website.

I had the salt and pepper chicken bites with normal chips. The onions and peppers were burnt but generally it was good.

My partner and I love the good catch, the staff are always friendly, the food is delicious and the service is quick too even when they are heaving busy! You can also tell that the staff get along with each other and have a good team attitude. The last time we were in it was very busy but the staff looked like they were having fun and at the same time doing their job so quickly and correctly!

Ordered x2 chicken breast and chips. When I got home I cut in to my chicken and the blood just poured out and went all over my chips. It was disgusting and went straight in the bin. The lady cooking the chicken even said it would be an extra 10 mins wait as having chicken. She seemed a bit stressed as another 2 people came in after me and ordered chicken. Put me off for life.

Unfortunately this fish and chip shop can’t maintain a good standard, it varies from very good to poor. Well give it a miss now for a few weeks, and see if it picks up. By contrast, went to Mr Chips in Churchtown the next day, and what an improvement to Freshfield. Quality so much higher, and cheaper

Looks like it's had a refurb since some of the other reviews. Very clean and modern. Nice food and friendly staff. Handy for getting chippy before heading to squirrel park if using the train as right by station.

Such a lovely place! I don’t understand all these bad reviews as the service was super friendly, the people that worked there were so personable and kind. The fish was big, and the potatoes they had used for the chips were delish- haddock was nice and meaty! If I’m ever in Formby I would come back here again!

After a walk on Formby beach it's always mandatory to go to The Good Catch for fish chips & mushy peas! Delicious & good size cod.

We go here about once every two months or so. Really disappointed this evening , with the chips. They were so pale and white that they were under cooked. I didn't realise until we got home. We threw most of them in the bin, inedible. Can't fathom why you would serve them and wrap them up for a customer, to be honest. A shame.

Fish and chips very nice but burgers not so good ordered a cheese burger it was the thinnest burger ever more like a child’s although the bun and salad was very nice and fresh

I went to this chippy a few years ago and wasn't that impressed so haven't been back before now. This time it was gorgeous the fish wasn't greasy the batter was light and the fish perfectly cooked, the chips were chunky and the curry sauce was good. Will be back again soon.

The chips have been wonderful, on our last two visits! We love calling in here and eating our chips on the bench (outside the Kiosk) before walking home via the Beach. Something we used to do in lockdown, before the refurb at The Good Catch.

Only thing better than the staff is the actual nosh. Superb batter. Bestest chippy around. No honestly. That good. The Spicey Curry Sauce is brill, but, few things beat mushy peas with your F&C.

I called and asked if anyone could help deliver some fish and chips to my grandma who is 101years as I am in Manchester and working. I explained the situation that my parents were away and I have no family in the area she has friends and neighbours but I didn’t want to inconvenience them. My grandma said she fancied some, she doesn’t eat much so I was trying to get some. The lady on the phone couldn’t have been more unhelpful and quite rude. I understand you don’t deliver but in your words ‘ I’m too busy’ was just heart breaking. She fought for your country try and be helpful.

Soggy chips, and the fish had a tangy flavour as if the cooking oil had burnt or was in need of a change. Easily the worst fish and chips I've had. Hope this was just an off day at the chippy and not the norm

Just ordered fish chips peas (and other meals too) from the good catch Formby I live literally round the corner and just got home and opened it straight away this is what I’ve just opened for fish and chips the whole fish was already In pieces and just crumbled absolute joke I’m embarrassed that I’ve just spent like £20 on what’s meant to be one of the best fish and chips

Loved the chips! They were made fresh to order. And on Mondays and Tuesdays the chips are fried separately from the fish. So great for vegetarians (on those days)

Poor value for money. Ordered halloumi & when we got home we were really disappointed that each portion -at £4 each- only contained 3 small strips of halloumi. Won’t be ordering that again!

Fish was nice enough without being great. Curry is thicker than Boris Johnson. Chips were utterly disgusting. Full of eyes and raw. Surely the most important thing for a chippy is they can cook chips correctly? I’m genuinely astonished at all the positive reviews for this place. I’ve been here before and the chips are always a let down, but on my last visit they were utterly disgraceful. What a waste of money.

They asked my family of 45 if we wanted salt and vinegar on our chips we all said yes because salt is important in food 🙄 they didn't put any salt or vinegar on any of our food so if you do go to order takeaway from here make sure to remind them. 🤦🏻‍♂️

Always come to the GC for a treat, usually best fish and chips around. Went Sunday 23/08/21, and chips were great - but fish batter seemed flat and greasy which is not usually the case (when I pressed the fish,you could see the oil). Not sure if this is the fault of the fryer or someone not draining properly. Usual very helpful blond woman was not there, younger staff seemed helpful enough though there was one middle-aged womand standing around seemingly not doing much. Hopefully a one-off, as with all small businesses would suggest they carry out a bit of mystery shopping now and again in order to keep standards up.

I found myself in Formby on Monday evening and checked Google Maps for the best Fish & Chips locally. The Good Catch isn't in the town centre so worth the few minutes drive to Freshfield to find a 4.5 recommendation. At 17.15 there were a few cars around waiting to collect commuters from the station, but parking was easy enough at the far end of the station. With the exception of having to wait to order as two teenage lads faffed around for a bag a chips and couldn't pay by card as soon as I was in my order was taken, cod pre cooked so no waiting around, two very pleasant young ladies dealt with my order, asked if I wanted salt & vinegar and also asked if I needed a fork. Tapped my phone for contactless payment and out. If looking for somewhere to eat, turn right into Victoria Road over the level crossing and Formby Beach & Dunes is a minute away.

Went here for our tea after a wonderful day at Formby beach. Wow, this really is an amazing chippy. I am a fish and chips snob so its got to be good and this was better than that. The fish was cooked to perfection with crispy batter. Chips were excellent but the homemade tartare sauce was outstanding... will be coming back again.

Oh you have no idea how excited 'The Good Catch' made me! It was my birthday yesterday so I suggested we drive over to Formby, get some chips and go sit on the dunes at the beach having never visited Formby before. I did the obligatory Google search before setting off and settled on The Good Catch because of its high ratings, seemingly the highest in Formby. You have no idea how impressed I was when we turned up and on the menu was listings for Gluten Free & Vegan pies!! As a Coeliac Vegan, a Vegiac if you will, my only choice at chippies is usually chips and peas or chips and beans. Well, The Good Catch had other plans for me! Want a pie? There's more than one you can choose from! Want vinegar on your chips? Ours is Gluten Free! Are our chips fried in the same fryer with the gluten riddled batter? Absolutely not! Wonderful!!! Thank you so much The Good Catch. You will be worth the one hour drive again if we don't visit the beautiful beach just down the road.
