Visited on a Friday evening and we were served by Leah! She was fantastic! so friendly and couldn’t do enough for us. Can’t wait to visit again. Great food and drinks.

We had a family Sunday lunch which was enjoyed by all of us. We never booked but turned up on the off chance and our party of 10( including 2 kids) were accommodated. Between us we had different versions on the Sunday roast ( including vegetarian) and we were all impressed, would definitely eat there again.

Went this evening with my husband and two young children. Nice atmosphere staff were very welcoming and attentive. The chefs were extremely accommodating for my 9 year old bad fussy hubby and the food was delicious

What started out as a lovely evening with friends, ended with promises never to return! The food arrived and was lovely for 5 of us but sadly the shared plater for 2 was a complete let down, the steak was ordered as medium rare and not only arrived rare but full of fat. The waitress was called and told about the food and a few minutes later the chef stormed out of the kitchen and verbally attacked my friends, he didn't allow anyone to speak and accused us all of (in his words) slagging him off, which was completely untrue. One of our friends is in her 70's and was so upset by his outburst that she left early. This man was vile and I have never heard anyone speak to customers that way before. Shame on him! Needless to say that none of us will ever go there again.

By far the worst meal / experience i have ever had in a restaurant….. We had ordered a cote de boufe sharing steak for 2 people, after waiting for 1 hour and 30mins for the food, the steak arrived, which was suppose to be cooked meduim - rare,however we received this “blue” or maybe even less cooked than blue … This steak was 85% fat ! Uncooked, Raw Fat ! So evidently we asked for our steak to be taken back to the chef as this was inedible, and to our surprise the chef paid a visit to our table .. Only to be screamed at infront of the entire restaurant by himself, we was told our steak was suppose to be full of fat and it most definitely was not blue ! As he continued to shout at our table, in which there was elderly members in the party whom he made cry, as he was being so aggressive. I am absolutely disgusted with the service we received as we were not even offered a fresh meal or alternative. This is not the type of service you expect to receive in a restaurant! I will never be returning to this disgusting establishment

We came here for Mother’s Day and then returned for Easter Sunday, the staff are lovely and friendly and I’d like to give a shoutout to Ellen, our waitress, she was very knowledgeable about allergens, my sister is gluten free and she knew what was available to her and what wasn’t. The food is incredible, we used to go to the other local pub all the time but we now come here frequently. I asked them a few weeks ago if they were able to get some alcohol free drinks in and they have, they’re so accommodating. Would definitely recommend!

Very disappointing in comparison to previous visits. Drinks we initially asked for (soft and beer) not available. Gave food order only to be told a 10 minute wait compared to usual service as big table before us. One hour and 20 minutes later the starters arrived! No where near as good and fresh tasting as previous visits and we had really bigged up the brisket bites and chicken wings to our family it was so disappointing. We then waited another hour before our roasts were served and what an anti climax, beef was really fatty and sparse. The gravy was nothing like we had been served previously, almost black and slightly bitter, asked if we would like any sauces but only to be told they had no cranberry for the chicken roasts. We asked to look at the wine menu early on only to be told there wasn’t one. All in all our 2 course meal took 3 hours with 3 young children this was totally unacceptable! The food was no where near as good as previous visits and we shall not be returning!

Disappointed with the food, certainly not worth the money. Not cooked medium rare as requested, some parts were totally rare. I never complained as I don't like food recooked once served. No atmosphere in the restaurant. Bill was incorrect, overcharged for drinks which had already been paid for at the bar, situation rectified but no apology received. We will not be returning for food

Had the most beautiful roast dinner couldn't fault it at all. Looked after well by the kind caring staff. Thank you we'll be back .

A bit of a mixed bag! Staff very good and friendly. Chicken wings were excellent, though could be improved by providing a plate for the waste, as the dish they were served in was small. Roast beef was over done, as was the broccoli. Other veg and cauliflower cheese was great. We won’t return, there’s much better value and quality available locally.

Food excellent. Starters. Charred corn very tasty. Calamari, braised ends delicious. Prawns superb but needed bread and overpriced. Mains Fillets spot on. Lovely, cooked perfectly to request. Braised beef very good indeed. Chunky chips, Dauphinois really good. Sauces very flavourful and rich. Service lovely. Very responsive. Friendly and efficient. Need a more extensive wine list if you are selling this as a steak house not a pub. Wine adequate but not great. Ambience very pubby. Fellow diners thought lighting too bright, decor a bit stark, not enough touches like candles, other table additions. Value for money v good. Will return. But would enjoy better wine!! The worst dining experience I have ever had. The evening got off to a poor start when the waitress poured a full pint of lager over me as I sat down, however, accidents happen and this wouldn't have ruined my evening had the remainder of my evening been pleasant. It would have been nice for the manager on shift to come to the table to apologise but his didn't happen, however, to try to make amends, we were offered 2 free rounds of drinks, which was great, and would have fixed the sour taste. The starters were lovely, and we hoped the rest of the meal would continue that way. We ordered 1 X Rib Eye (£28), 1 X Fillet (£30) and 1 X Tomahawk (£35), all cooked medium rare, however, when the steaks arrived, after the first few bites, all of us could see the steaks were cooked incorrectly. The rib eye was basically blue, the Fillet was medium-well, and the Tomahawk, which was closest, was cooked rare. Nobody came to ask how the food was so we had to call the waitress to let her know, and she checked with the manager and eventually took the steaks back to the kitchen. At this point, the evening was completely ruined, when the manager came to our table. He went on to admit that the Fillet was cooked incorrectly, but that the other 2 were cooked perfectly and went on to say we didn't know what we were talking about as he had been in the industry for 25 years. I asked if he had cooked them then, which he hadn't. This disagreement went on for over 5 minutes at the table side before he eventually accused us of trying to get a free meal because I had had the drink poured over me. The manager asked how he could solve our issues, to which we replied that we were more than happy to pay for the meals, but wanted the steaks cooked correctly. He continued to argue with us that they were cooked perfectly and we should have asked for a different level of cooking if we weren't happy, and after around 10 minutes, eventually told us to call it a day and said he was refusing to bring our meals back. This is a local pub/restaurant to me, where we had our surprise engagement party, regularly go in for impromptu meals and drinks, however, whilst this new management is in place, I can categorically say I will never go in there again.

Very disappointed having not visited since new owners have taken over. Wanted a drink at 5.15 and were told all tables reserved although only 1 was occupied. We were told could have a table in the back corner of the back room off the public bar!! Over the years we have visited many times for early evening drinks and never been refused even though we would vacate after 30 mins. New owners please respond?

The food and service were both absolutely excellent. We will definitely be back. We came for Sunday lunch today and it was such good quality and cooked to perfection!! Worth every single penny, as a decent roast is hard to come by! When discussing the Sunday dinner here the only place we could compare it to being as good as, if not better was Pasture. The staff are so helpful. An absolute gem, the best Sunday dinner we have had out by far!

We were looking forward to visiting the Golden Lion, as it is now under new management. Unfortunately, the food was very disappointing. I ordered the Rib-Eye steak, which was expensive at £28. I asked for medium rare but it arrived very rare, possibly nearer to blue. I expect some fat on a rib-eye steak, but I would say that about half of the steak was entirely made of fat. The meat that was there was tough. No-one came to ask if the food was ok, and when we paid the bill I mentioned the poor quality but was not offered any compensation. Very poor, considering it is supposed to be a steak house that specialises in steak.

Had a fillet steak and it was better than Carter & Miller! Will be back for sure. Not sure if they have a dessert menu as wasn’t asked if wanted a dessert

Great atmosphere... Cosy village pub. Believe there has been a recent change of owner/regime and a re-opening; it was all running fine... Great food and attentive (but not interfering) staff. Was a perfect meal to end a lovely trip to the RSPB Reserve. I understand it is a grill/meat heavy menu - which is fine with me - but may want to consider a little more diversity in the longer run. Meanwhile though, will dine again the next time am out that way...

We visited for lunch and settled on the Tapas. The staff were very friendly and the food was freshly prepared. We were lucky enough to have a beautiful day and able to enjoy the lovely beer garden. We will be back soon

Always reluctant when not a personal recommendation. I had lemon sole and my partner had vegetarian lasagne. Have to say it was delicious, one of the nicest pub meals I've had out. Great price too. Will Definitely Go Back

The Golden Lion: just wow. What an atmosphere and what a line up of dishes. The veggie chilli was heavenly. And the chocolate orange cake was nothing short of breathtaking. The Golden Lion could win a gold medal in my eyes. Magor’s finest.

We arrived without a booking but we’re welcomed, told there would be a wait of about 20 minutes and we felt that was fine. Our food was served within25 minutes and was excellent. They even adapted the menu for my husband, adding chicken and bacon to a vegetarian pasta. The staff were very friendly as was the atmosphere. We were staying at the Ty Hotel, 5 minutes away and they recommended the Golden Lion. We were so glad they did.

Lovely home cooked food this evening and excellent friendly service by Taylor - she is a real asset to the team! I would definitely recommend this friendly village pub. (It gets busy though so may be worth booking in advance (we tried to eat earlier this week and couldn’t get in))

We booked a table for 4 at 13:30 on Sunday 5th September. We arrived early at 13:10 and were shown to our table. It was explained that our food order will be taken at 13:30 but we were able to order drinks which arrived promptly. I ordered a pint of Tribute which when it came was cloudy but expected it to clear. It was also served very cold. After drinking some of the pint, I alerted the waitress to the problem and asked if I wanted something else. I said a pint of Bombardier which duly arrived. Yet again, the beer was very cold and cloudy. After a couple of mouthfuls, I give up. Wasn't pleasant at all. To rub salt into the wounds, I was charged for both pints. If bitter is being served at the same temperature as lager, what hope is there for bitter drinkers. No taste and cloudy.Now the food and this isn't any better.Starter -2 of the party had soup which barely covered the bowl and was warm. I had 3 deep fried brie which were no bigger than sugar cubes and the last of the party had a prawn cocktail which he enjoyed but the dish used was also used for his dessert (hopefully they have more one). Main - 2 roast chicken breasts, 1 lamb and 1 beef stroganoff. The beef stroganoff was enjoyed but the chicken and lamb was in a different league.The gravy on the plates had gone cold and congealed. In fact the 3 meals were cold including the pitiful vegetables which barely would have feed 3 adults and the gravy in the boat.Dessert - Thank God, these were cold but there was no taste of lemons in the cheesecake, no taste of bananas in the banoffee, and the profiteroles were served in an identical metal dish to his prawn cocktail.With tip we paid £120.00 for this Sunday lunch which was a waste of money. We were there for over 3 hours which is time we will not get back.0 stars.

Visited here a few times during a stay nearby, staff were great especially Oscar. The food was excellent on each occasion, they were very accommodating and even though it gets pretty busy we never seemed to wait very long for our food. My favourite was the roast dinner served on Sundays, but the menu is great with weekly specials. Fantastic place, nice beer garden too, compliments to the Chef and all the staff, brilliant!!

Bar service was fine but food service/ordering was so bad,The waitresses need customer service training and training on the basics of waitressing. It feels like the team have just been hired and it was their first shift.Orders coming out incorrect, strange alternate accompaniments with our main meal (offered tartare sauce as an alternate to mint sauce on a roast dinner?) And by the time we were offered a reasonable alternative we had finished our meal.Constant lack of cutlery on every course of our meals and for our desserts we were given soup spoons and multiple orders came out incorrect.It just little things which made the experience laughable in the end. A bit of guidance and training and it will be good.

First time visit.Met up with friends for lunch. Excellent variety on offer. All of the meals and puddings were cooked to an exceptionally high standard. I had the home made pie the sauce was to die for and the pastry so light, all guests thoroughly enjoyed their meals wouldnt hesitate to recommend , id even recommend it to my mother in law !! such was the quality of food and lovely waiting on staff. A real gem of a place

Great night at the Golden Lion!The waitress who served us (curly black hair - think her name was Taylor), was super lovely! Loads of gluten free options too (including gluten free beer) which was rare in this area and all the food was lovely and a reasonable price. Definitely recommend!

Garden table booked due to having dogs. We chose the Lion Platter, where you get 3 choices of tapas for £9.50. There were 3 adults and a child, so we had 3 lots of 3 and 2 chips to share. Food was excellent. We did have to wait rather a long time, but found out this was due to the other village pub being shut in a Monday. Worth waiting for though.

Nice outdoor area but the manager/ owner of this establishment really needs to get a grip of the service. Clearly can't cope when 70% of tables full. Needs more staff to cope or customets will vote by not returning.

We are local to the village and have used the pub for years but since being able to have a drink in the beer garden post-lockdown, the service is noticeably poorer than in previous years.The system they have is for someone to take a drinks order, then someone else to take payment and then finally someone else to provide the drinks. 3 client transactions seems inefficient compared with taking the order and payment at the same time. This has led to confusion on many occasions where drinks have been paid for but someone else is trying to charge us. There have also been long delays with getting a drinks order as well as bringing drinks out after having been paid for. Quick to take payment though! This is not on an odd occasion; this has been on most visits and lots of friends in the village have had the same experience. We have visited other pubs locally which have been extremely busy but the service has been much better. I hope the owners take these concerns seriously as we would love to continue to support the pub and see it thrive year round.

This is our fourth visit since May 2021 to dine at the Golden Lion. The fact we keep on coming there should say something. The food and service was superb and keeps on improving in quality. Our friends had not been to the Golden Lion in many years and were so impressed they will be going again shortly. well done to the management and team in giving us this fantastic village pub.

I went to the golden lion today with my daughter for lunch and I must say I was well impressed with everything from the food to the staff to the outside seating arrangement and gardens even to the accommodating of our 2 dogs … the staff were very friendly and polite no rushing you to order .. food I must say was amazing and very good value for money we both had paninies that were full of filling no skimping on anything … my daughter had a dessert to die for sticky toffee and apple pudding with ice cream it was as good as it looked … I couldn’t have chosen a better place to go for my first pub lunch since we all went into lockdown … everything was perfect I can’t fault any of it will definitely be going there again … well done a fabulous pub

Yesterday 4 of us went to the Golden Lion and had an exceptional Sunday lunch.We tried the lamb, beef and pork and it was all lovely with plenty of it including roast and new potatoes, broccoli, carrots, peas and Yorkshire puds with excellent gravy. We paid extra for cauliflower cheese but it was well worth it.The chef (Linda) came into the restaurant so we were able to thank her personally together with the staff for their service.Cannot praise the Golden Lion enough and will definitely be back soon for another roast!!Well done all!

We had our first restaurant family meal in a long time and it did not disappoint. The food not only tasted great but looked like a work of art. The garden area has been renovated and has an undercover area with large patio heaters. All staff and service excellent especially Oscar!

this is the first time i have been (party of 4) and the staff are so friendly and such a relaxed atmosphere. The food is fairly priced and very good, i have eaten in more expensive restaurants with quality of food not as high. for us the staff and the atmosphere made it a wonderful evening. covid safety followed well. thank you to te staff and the chef. i rarely leave reviews but felt this was well deserved.

Another lovely meal to celebrate my Mum’s birthday. The last time I had a lasagne, which was obviously homemade, and delicious. This time I chose the loaded burger, which I was told was made on the premises. Not disappointed! It was extremely tasty.We felt extremely safe, and well looked after by the staff.For dessert I has a homemade creme brûlée cheesecake. What a combination! Heaven!Would definitely recommend a visit for a tasty unpretentious meal. Lots of choice too!

I returned to the Golden Lion on 14/5/21 and 16/5/21. The first occasion was for a birthday meal with family and friends. This was at a time when customers had to be outside so we were assigned a table under cover. What I found especially impressive was that we received a bespoke, personal birthday card and a complementary bottle of prosecco. The food was lovely and the service exceptional. The landlord Oz (apologies for any incorrect spelling) welcomed us and checked that all was to our satisfaction on a couple of occasions. Our server Naomi was helpful, attentive and friendly. The second occasion was for a few drinks, again with family and friends. Oz kindly booked us a table despite the fact that we were not eating. It was no problem to accommodate a couple more guests at little notice. Again Oz greeted us and kept in touch to ensure all was good. I think our server was called Emily (again, apologies if incorrect) and Emily provided an excellent service, and her colleagues appeared to be doing likewise. All were smiling, polite and helpful, despite being busy and sometimes working in the rain. I would also like to mention a male Golden Lion representative who sat us at out table and provided cushions for our seats. I did not get his name, but he has been there some time and has been wearing a full face shield if identification be required. He was as focused on professional and friendly customer service as any.Great to find a place that has consistently valued and rewarded customers for their patronage.

We have been here countless times under old management, food was great, atmosphere was great. Under new management, even though outside in the cold, I have to say this is an improvement. Improved menu, great staff, great atmosphere. The chips were fantastic, probably some of the best I've had around here. People need to be patient, there are Covid rules to follow, directions to follow, but even though outside was fairly full the staff did a great job. We will be making this a weekly thing at least. 3 years since my last review, and I am glad I have the chance to come on and compliment the staff. Cheers!

Food was nice as were most of the staff but the experience was tainted by an arrogant obnoxious member of staff called Oscar! Assume he’s some kind of manager there but they should really demote him to cleaning the toilets as he has zero people skills!!

We had breakfast here which was such a disappointment. Overcooked scrambled & poached eggs (which tasted of nothing but vinegar) black pudding missing off a large breakfast & overall generally VERY disappointed with the quality, won't be retuning

came for a sunday lunch with family and was blown away with the service, food and atmosphere at this beautiful pub. the new management have taken this place above and beyond our expectations and we are already making arrangements to visit again. i had the beef and it was delicious. our waitress, Lauren, was so attentive, friendly and polite (whilst still laughing at our poor banter!) All i can say is wow! it will be a trip to be remembered, thankyou all and we look forward to coming again!!!

Poor management As hard as the staff tried to do their best with serving everyone I found that the management was poor ordered drinks 30 mins before closing time to be told sorry we haven’t sorted drinks and now it’s to late , don’t think management will be at this establishment very long as they seem clueless could be a good pub but not with the current management

Had a Sunday lunch 16/11/20 with a couple of family members. Multiple COVID precautions were taken: masks, one way system, hand sanitiser stations, customers were not allowed to go to the bar, decent spacing between tables, system of used and clean menus etc. The staff were very friendly and attentive, regularly checking that all was to our satisfaction. We were not disturbed by other customers. Very reasonable prices, I chose the one course for £11 option. I had a good pint of Speckled Hen, the other option that I would happily have had was Tribute. I had the beef which was good quality, and the right quantity for me. Nice big Yorkshire pudding. It is a clean and smart country pub which I have used for many years, although usually just for drinks. There was seating outside with heaters and covers, but we sat inside. Very pleased that one of the very few times I have been out to eat since March was enhanced by this choice of venue, I look forward to returning and wish them continued success.

Visited the golden lion a few weeks back on a Thursday morning for a pub breakfast, wow very impressed, lovely pub, Staff were really friendly and polite and the breakfast was really good, The quality of the food was fantastic and beautifully presented, i regularly pass by but have never stopped before, after Thursday morning's visit i will definitely be stopping again some time in the near future and would recommend this pub to my work colleague's as well.

It has been an absolute joy to be back in the Golden Lion. The attention to detail regarding track and trace, cleanliness and service provision is outstanding. You are made to feel welcome as soon as you walk through the door. The bar staff are not only friendly but actually enjoy a bit of banter. The owners take the time to chat and get get your feedback. They make you feel that you as the customer are the most important person in their pub. This is a traditional village pub at it’s best. Well done to you all and I can’t wait to be back after our latest lockdown. ❤️

Had a lovely evening in the Lion. Food was great. We had a tapas selection and a belly pork dish. Excellent value for money. The wine was great as well. This pub is well and truly worth a visit. Lucky for us it is our local.

It was good to return to the Lion. The food was excellent. A good choice of dishes. The service was great. Our server, Lucy, was outstanding in her efficiency and friendliness. We will return.

This is the first time I have eaten at the Lion since it opened under new management, and I was pleasantly surprised.Everything was clean and newly decorated, and the staff were smart, friendly and attentive.The choice of food was varied, and there were choices to suit every appetite and pocket.I love lasagne and have never found anywhere that can make it to my own standards, including Italian restaurants! But the one I ate here did not disappoint, and was clearly home made and delicious!

Popped in for coffee and breakfast on their opening day last Friday and although they were still setting up the staff could not have been more welcoming and professional. Lovely food and service, in a safe environment and great to see the pub reopening. Would definitely recommend and will be visiting again soon!

This was an enjoyable evening in a cosy, welcoming venue. The service was excellent and the cooking of a very high standard. We particularly liked the seafood risotto and the steak was cooked to perfection. Only regret was that we did not have any space left for dessert.

This was our fourth time eating here and again we were not disappointed. I’ve had the pie meal 3 times as it is so delicious. Filled with prime steak and a lovely jug of gravy it was perfect.They have a very good menu with loads of vegan options. You will always eat well here.

Our local, amazing food and service again, worth every penny, the chef knows his stuff nice been a vegetarian and get as much choice as a non vegetarian, the nut roast was outstanding, we will be back .. highly recommend

Have had some lovely Sunday lunches here, not been for a year or more so booked Sunday lunch. At 1, o, clock the pub was still empty, had a drink,ordered our food, great staff, great service, but food a let down. The land was beautiful, but veg was not just al dente it was raw, the potatoes were frozen ones and food not very warm, the Brie starter was small, the crostini with the pate hard, the dessert menu not very exciting, a let down for us, it’s not cheap either, wouldn’t go again.

Stopped for lunch on way to Bristol airport wife is coeliac and has to eat gluten free lady behind bar was also a coeliac so a good start menu really good and they also offer a 2 course lunchtime menu for just 11.95 for 2 wife had a really good tomato and red pepper soup and mushroom risotto both gf and I had the whitebait and steak & chips everything really good staff really friendly highly recommend

I don’t normally do reviews but after visiting The Golden lion Magor we where blown away by Louise and her hospitality. Service Brilliant, Food Taste was outstanding and I would highly recommend at visit. Large selection of fine wines and Beers in an idyllic atmosphere.

We went to this restaurant on Sunday 5th January 2020. It was a spur of the moment decision to go here as I was travelling back to London and arranged to meet my Son & GF for lunch before heading off. The only reason we chose this place was that we wanted somewhere close to the M4. What a lovely setting on the Square in Magor (which I never even knew existed)I didn't realise that they would only be providing a traditional Sunday lunch menu. If I had realised I would have avoided it - just not normally my thing...I am so glad I didn't know this prior to my visit. The food was delicious with some surprising option for both starters & mains. The staff were very attentive without being obtrusive. I would certainly visit there again and definitely recommend it.

After reading good reviews I decided to take my mother here for lunch. The pub was cold and we waited almost an hour before our Main Course was served. Food okay but environment and waiting time very poor.

Nice meal from the 2 for £12.95 menu. We tried both soups (mushroom and carrot with ginger) and the the fish and chips which was very good (and huge). Lovely pub with lovely staff. Very nice place close to M4.

Absolutely fabulous evening !! From being greeted and meeted by the lovely landlady Lou.To the very good service from Naomi, and the fantastic vegan two course meal cooked by chef Ariel - the food was great, atmosphere great and a wonderful meals great night !

Tried the 2 for 11.95 lunch menu. Food was really good, whitebait and soup starters followed by fish and steaks. Generous portions and all very well cooked. Husband said best steak in years. Shared beautifully presented sticky toffee pud, not part of the deal, and had floater coffee. Andrea was our waitress, shes very efficient, asking if ok to take plates rather than just homing in on us, and gave us details of specials etc before we ordered and without having to refer to the kitchen first. Also very friendly and welcoming, as were all of the staff.

We booked the Golden Lion for after funeral refreshments. Hand on heart, I can truthfully say that the buffet we ordered was excellent, everyone told us how good the food was and so different to your usual ham or cheese sandwiches. The food was freshly prepared for us by the excellent chef. Louise the owner could not do enough for us. Compassion, sympathy and dignity are her rules and we received that and more.
