The only thing holding this pub back from being excellent was the lack of card payments. Thankfully, they've now started accepting card! Parmos and beer are excellent, highly recommended if you're in the area.

This pub need to be closed, iam not sure what they are trying to achieve by charging extortionate amounts of money for unnamed brands of alcohol. They don't take card or apple pay, no one carries cash about anymore.... your not allowed anything like a phone and your not allowed to sing because they don't have a music licence.... If this pub was taken over by an actual decent brewery that served named brands and decent food it would literally be a gold mine...

Decent pub, good selection of beers (there are no brands. It's all Sam Smith drinks). They have a fantastic pint of stout. Prices are very reasonable, especially compared to country pubs in the area. It's very much got the feel of a "locals" pub, but it's friendly at the same time and you don't feel like you're intruding. Don't come here if you want to be entertained by music, pokey machines, etc. You make your entertainment here by talking to punters and the staff. It's a digital detox pub (meaning no phones allowed) although I don't always see this being enforced. I personally like the idea of going somewhere where people are forced for a short period of their day to actually look at people's faces rather than everyone looking at their screens, but I get that some people don't like that. If you don't like that, don't come here and then give it a 1 star review because you couldn't use Instagram inside. You know what it is, and it is what it is. (Also, no swearing is allowed - though I've not seen whether this has been enforced as I've never encountered anyone swearing inside!) If you need to swear loudly, expect to be told to stop. Normally very quiet inside, which again, suits me, but won't suit everyone. Occasionally you'll get a football team come in after their game who can make it relatively lively, but all-in-all, it's very quiet and peaceful inside, and at times you could practically hear a pin drop. Again, know what it is before you come, and if you do come and it's too quiet FOR YOU, don't give a 1 star review saying it's too quiet. People are going there for the peaceful nature of the place. If you need loud music and loud memories, this isn't the place for you. There were some reviews saying they don't accept card payments. I don't know when that was, but they certainly do accept card payments now. I only ever use card in there. In all, it's a nice pub. It's functional, it's [usually] quiet, and importantly, it's civilised. The star drops down to 4 stars because of inconsistencies in enforcing the widely advertised digital device ban, and because occasionally I like a wine, and here it's literally "red" or "white" - if in stock (but again, people come here for the beer rather than the wine, so maybe that's being unfair).

Popped in last night when walking the dog as the WhatPub website said it was dog friendly. It's not dog friendly. New ownership has meant dogs are not welcome; even kids are frowned upon. They do serve a lovely organic lager though. Had to sit outside with Basil (my lurcher) in the cold to drink it. I think I'll wander down to Yarm centre instead, next time. Plenty of dog friendly pubs down there. And they don't take card payments either.

Very disappointed to find that whilst the prices of the drinks have gone up, customers are still being forced to pay by cash only. This goes against Covid-19 prevention advice, and puts customers at risk of handling infected money. Might as well go into the high street as the drinks prices are now similar, but you have the added safety measures of paying by card and table service.

I had one hour to spare in between meetings and came to this pub to have a quick spot of lunch. First thing, chap behind the bar was exceptional and explained the local delicacy to me which is some sort of deep fried chicken dish. Ordered half a pint of splendid Sam Smith bitter accompanied by liver and onions. If I had to review this pub based on the food and the cleanliness of the lounge bar and the quality of the ale then it would be five stars. Why have I left one? I have left one because I was not allowed to have my iPad on the lunch table to read the newspaper and subsequently write up my meeting. Apparently there is an outright ban on laptops and tablets. This beggars belief given that I was the only person in the lounge bar today and while I am somewhat angry I hope that the landlord can take note of this comment and relax his rules so that he may get more clientele. Also a cash only policy rather than accepting cards was somewhat inconvenient for those that like to account for their business expenses through a card. I was happy to leave a tip recognising the super liver and onions, polite staff and great beers. Exceptional value.

You can only spend £20 minimum (they also want to hold your card behind the bar) you cannot sing, you cannot swear, now we are not foul mouthed but come on we were out past the water shed! Now I'm sorry but I have never heard the likes of it not being allowed to sing because they do not hold a music license?
