We visited this place last night. I ordered the cod loin. It was delicious. Such a shame the fish came in a tiny portion! About 2 inches wide and an inch thick. The lemon was smothered by the sauce so one could hardly squeeze the lemon over the fish without getting one’s fingers in the sauce. My husband had the gammon which was delightful and a very generous portion. He was very satisfied and full up. I was still hungry. When the waitress asked how it was, I told her as above and she just giggled. We won’t be visiting this place again.

Girls catch up with my lovely friends, one friend brought her very well behaved dog. Ordered our drinks & received them quite quickly. When it came to order, there was a handful of dishes that weren’t able (Chicken Caesar Salad, Steak, Curly Fries..). Bit gutted as myself & my friend already had picked what we were going to have prior our visit! In the end, I went Beef Stroganoff, my friends selected Steak Pie with Chips & Haddock & Chips. The main meal was nice, lovely pub grub. Cannot fault the food. Plenty of beef in my Beef Stroganoff, accompanied by Rice & Side Salad. I opted for a pudding, I selected Sticky Toffee Pudding with Custard. The reason I have given this three stars was the place is lacking atmosphere, a freshen decor, the staff were okay, but you didn’t feel overly welcome even though you were paying for a service. I hate to be negative but there is so much room for improvement.

My family party of 6 adults and 3 children had dinner at the Golden Ball after a small family wedding . We had the private room and were extremely well looked after by the lovely staff who couldn’t do enough for us. The food was excellent and in my opinion very good value. Four of us were staying here for business. On arrival sarah was the most welcoming host ever. We were made to feel as if we are very special which we certainly are not! The hotel is different to the usual sterile places we stay and that was very refreshing. Good food good beers and apart from a little tiredness in decor etc. everything was great. Music was a really good mix and a big shout out for the garden as it is beautiful and had a lovely discussion with Sarah about the plants and trees. Great knowledge Sarah.

Beautiful inn in small village with separate accommodation annexe. Do not be put off by the address being ‘high street’. The accommodation is at the rear of the hotel and is very quiet and peaceful. The rooms are large with extremely comfortable beds, tea/coffee making facilities, AC unit for heating and cool air, beautiful bathrooms with complimentary toiletries. We booked a table for the restaurant a day in advance of arrival and glad that we did as the restaurant quickly filled up. The menu is very comprehensive and unlike most hotels nowadays consisted of classic dishes plus a couple of specials (no jus or foam to be seen on the menu). The food was excellent, piping hot and nicely presented. I had the soup of the day (butternut squash) followed by homemade shepherds pie with a selection of green vegetables. My husband had cod goujons as a starter followed by one of the specials Katsu chicken burger. Unfortunately we had no room for dessert. We washed this down with a lovely bottle of reasonably priced Albariño. After a good nights sleep we went into hotel for breakfast, lovely selection of juices, cereals, fresh fruit, full English breakfast and toast. The staff were all very friendly and welcoming and we will definitely be visiting again. One small recommendation - it would be a nice touch to have a bottle of drinking water in each room although we were able to request this at the bar.

Very underwhelming and disappointing. The roast lamb was served with cauliflower cheese and the vegetables consisted of parsnips and one sliver of carrot. Southern fried chicken and potato wedges were inedible. Wedges were burnt and the whole meal looked as if it had been reheated from a previous occasion . A heavily tattooed waitress came out of the kitchen serving food whilst chewing . Just hope it wasn’t something from our plate. Will not be returning.

I met a friend for lunch and we both ordered roast lamb. Hers came with a pot of cauliflower cheese and a Yorkshire pudding. There was no supplement for these for my GF meal which was very small. I had few over-cooked vegetables, 4 roast potatoes and 3 small slices of meat. That was £15.50. I did complain and was given a 12% discount and a coffee. The only GF dessert options were ice cream or sorbet. As it was below freezing outside I didn't want those so all in all it was a disappointing meal. However the owner was friendly and tried to address the issues and did give me a discount.

We called in for lunch today (27/08/20) after a circular walk through woods near Knapwell. We were seated at a round table overlooking the attractive garden and outside area. The pub had interesting tapestries across the beamed ceiling and the walls had been newly decorated. We were well looked after by a very efficient person, Jackie, who took our orders for food and drink promptly and gave us very good service. I had a good size portion of baked salmon with tasty mash, vegetables and a jug of dill sauce. Husband ordered the 'special' of duck breast and trimmings and it was cooked to perfection. No room for dessert - maybe next time! The large outside garden area looked beautiful with spaced out seating and lovely pots of flowers. This pub well worth a visit and has apparently been very popular during the 'eat-out scheme'. However, its worth visiting for a lovely relaxing meal anytime. Thank you to the owners, Sarah and Stephen, for all their hard work during the lock-down to make the Golden Ball look great. It's good to see it re-open and serving great meals.

We all opted for one of specials of the day and they didn't disappoint. Portions were good, not huge (except for a,burger I saw being served up at an adjacent table) with fresh rather than frozen veg. My duck breast with cranberry jus and dauphinoise potatoes, was a delight - I wanted to lick the last of the jus off the plate, it was,so delicious. Everyone opted for pud rather than a starter, again, not massive portions but after the richness of the main, it wasn't needed. Will definitely be coming again.

Have visited the restaurant many many times over the the last 18 years or so and the Golden Ball was often my go-to choice for large family get togethers. Never again. On my most recent visit I was served completely inedible cod and chips. It looked appetising enough until I tried to sink my knife and fork into the battered fish and it was rock hard, not just a bit tough, but completely solid! I immediately thought I had been served a frozen fillet of fish, yet it was warm when I touched it. I called the waitress over immediately and she was very apologetic and offered me an alternative which I declined as unsurprisingly, I had lost my appetite. The Manager came over and having checked with the chef assured me I hadn’t been served uncooked food, but couldn’t offer an explanation of why the fish was inedible. We left and were not charged for the drinks we had already partially consumed. Needless to say I have lost all confidence in the quality of food served at the Golden Ball and will never go again.

My wife and I visited the Golden Ball for an evening meal and to scout out the possibility of having a family birthday gathering there in the near future. The thatched 16th century hotel was a winner as soon as we arrived. A glorious sunny evening highlighted the beautiful setting, lovely gardens surrounding the building. The restaurant staff could not be faulted for their service and the food was top quality. Shame that we only managed one course! We opted out of a starter in order to follow the mains with a pudding (the dessert list was mouthwatering!). But our orders of scampi and chips and steak and kidney pudding were so huge and so good, that we could only make room for coffee. Can’t wait for the birthday meal and the return visit!

We booked for one night bed and breakfast as a stop over on our way to Suffolk Coast. Externally it looked quite promising, large car park, white washed building with plenty of colourful flowers and tidy gardens. On entering the pub to check in the vibes did not feel good and the whole place looked rather shabby and dirty. The rooms are in a separate building across the car park and on entering you were hit by a over powering smell of air freshener. The whole place really needed a good clean and freshen and was very lack lustre. We stayed in a room on the first floor which over looked the car park and the extractors from the restaurant were directly across and were very noisy. The decor in the room was varying shades of browns and beige which made an already small room feel even smaller. The bathroom was tiny and the towels had a very peculiar smell. Breakfast was served in the pub and I can only say there was an awful smell of staleness and old grease. Fortunately it was a beautiful sunny morning and we were able to sit outside on the benches. The breakfast was very substandard and the yoghurts that were out were in direct sunlight and therefore warm. The fruit we had to ask for and this was crudely cut apples, strawberries, blueberries. Very disappointing and not worth the money and would not recommend or stay there again.

Why is it that we sometimes overlook the jewels on our own doorstep? The Golden Ball Hotel is but 6 miles from home & we shall be returning very soon. My partner & I were celebrating my birthday & had an excellent lunch. We made our selections entirely from the excellent and varied specials board. We sampled each other’s choices as you do & were delighted with our choices whilst being a tad envious of each other’s. the service was first class with the staff displaying a thorough familiarity with both the menu & the specials available. There was a equally well stocked bar & and more than adequate wine list. The restaurant has a variety of seating options, from intimate to larger parties, also a large & beer garden. The Golden Ball is an attractive venue with beautiful thatching & well cared for gardens. Can you tell we were impressed?

Had a wonderful meal here tonight. The pub is made extra special by the host sarah who I have had the pleasure of getting to know over the years. She remembers family jobs etc. Lovely lady and great environment for a pleasant meal

been here a half a dozen times before several years before this visit but there was no where else to go for sunday lunch as everywhere we enquired was fully booked. I knew the food previously was traditional and good value so we went again. We all ordered shandys but they didn't taste so nice and seemed flat but it could have been the Estrella beer we are not used to. My chicken roast was small and covered in rich gravy. My partners lamb he said was very good and my mums pork was very good too. Service was good and all 3 lunches with a drink came to £45

This restaurant has been our default "regular" destination for about three years now. The place is actually a hotel, there is a separate building right next to the pub itself, I believe there are about a dozen bedrooms and from the photos on the web site they look fine. The place is in a pretty Cambridgeshire village, within 2 miles of the A14, which makes it perfectly positioned for access to various places, most notably Cambridge, although as the A14 is in the middle of a £1.5 billion makeover between Huntingdon and Cambridge, accessibility until mid 2020 is a bit compromised.

I recently stayed here while visiting Cambridge for meetings. It’s a very small hotel but the rooms were very clean and comfortable. The staff were very friendly and made guests feel very comfortable. In the evening enjoyed dinner in the adjoining pub and food was very good. Certainly a welcome change from the usual corporate hotels and will certainly stay again when visiting Cambridge area.

This pub has a cozy and friendly atmosphere and the service is thoughtful and warm. We always enjoy having a go at the trivial pursuit questions on the tables whilst we await our meals. Sunday roast dinners this time were much appreciated. Children's portions of roast dinner are on the large side, it would be nice to have the option of an even smaller plate for young children say under 6. That said, all my children enjoyed the food very much, and ate lots, even the fussy toddler. There are a lot of pudding options to choose from which is excellent. In my opinion the creme brulee caramelised topping was slightly overdone and would have benefitted from being a little thicker, but the creme was excellent. All in all a very good meal in pleasant surroundings and we will certainly be back.

I can't complain about either the food or the service here, but something about the place took me back to the 1980's (not always a bad thing!). Nothing outstandingly brilliant, but nothing at all bad either. Would I eat here again - yes, but there are other places I would go to first.

Booked through Trip Advisor when staying near to Cambridge for a weekend. Food of a good standard and a varied menu choice. Portions are generous and prices reasonable. The ambiance was pleasant and the service was very friendly.

We have eaten here a few times now and have always been impressed with the food and the good service. Their duck spring rolls are to die for and we love their pies ( Some of the best pies we've had ) Their burgers are also of a very good quality unlike the George and Dragon down the road where the burger was a frozen rubbery mess and for the same price as The Golden Ball. The interior of the restaurant is inviting and we love sitting in their lovely beer garden on a warm day. We will continue to come here even once we have moved away from the area.

Drove to The Golden Ball Hotel to have a meal, walked in and stood at the bar, two people behind the bar, no customers waiting whatsoever, stood and stood there, no-one acknowledged us, not even the waiting staff - stood there for several minutes, did not even have the decency to say 'will be with you in a moment' so we walked out and found an amazing pub, a couple of minutes up the road, The Poacher at Elsworth which we would highly recommend - so THANK YOU to the staff at The Golden Ball, you done us a favour.Would never return.

We were in an area we were not familiar with, and decided to take a cross country route back to our hotel when the A14 and M11 were in turmoil. We stumbled across the Golden Ball at Boxworth. A most pleasant inn, we decided to stop for a meal. The building was attractive, with a delightful garden, though because it was a date evening did not venture out. My wife had ham egg and chips, but substituted pineapple for the egg, and throughly enjoyed. I had shortlisted a couple of tasty sounding dishes from the menu, but when the waitress mentioned the specific, I chose lambs lives, with bacon and onions. So glad she told me about it, delicious. It,s a long way from home, but my wife wants to visit Cambridge again soon. I think I will return to the Golden Ball. Good food, lovely surroundings, friends staff, and good value. I noticed they have room too.

Poor quality food, seriously overpiced. More expensive than five guys with meat quality similar to a burger van. Both kids burgers were burn't. Nobdy around to complain to. Mediocre chicken burger and chips £14!

My wife and I went to this lovely pub with our dog for dinner. We booked a table in the bar area which is a real cosy bar. Everyone in the bar and the bar staff were so friendly. We sat there for a couple of hours having a drink plus dinner. The food was great, especially the home made pie. We will definitely return.
