There used to be food. Very good.

After visiting friends who live in this beautiful part of Norfolk we decided to stop at The Crown to have a quick drink before continuing our long journey home. The staff and locals were very welcoming and the variety of beers and ciders on offer were of great quality and reasonably priced. I was very impressed with the location and atmosphere of the village and yes I will definitely visit The Crown again.

Pop in for a quick drink for some where different. Staff welcoming friendly as we're the locals. Good selection of 🍻 beers, plenty car parking round back. Out of the way and not easy to find which is why I'd like to go back and stay.

Lovely village pub, really welcoming, cozy and friendly. We popped in with our daughter (7) and everyone spoke to us and the locals with their dogs were lovely as my daughter couldn’t resist their presence!

Took my Dad for lunch today, the service was spot on, the food was amazing, lovely pub, wouldn't hesitate in recommending!!

I eat & drink regularly at this dog friendly village pub. Good selection of real ales.Specials board changes weekly - really enjoyed the tasty & well presented smoked haddock chowder & Barnsley Chop.Excellent local cheese board. We were in the area visiting friends, thought we’d visit this once lovely pub and have a meal. Food was great, but bar maid so unwelcoming and basically rude. Why is she still there? Must cost the business through lost business.

Lovely pub, super setting. Outside seating, and a super church to walk around, next door. As a group of five, we all had to agree, that the fair haired woman who served us, was one of the rudest people , any of us had met in a long time, and should not have been customer facing.

Finished work late today ( Sunday ) and suddenly wondered if the crown would still be serving food at 6pm . Great to know they were and do until 7 . The roasts we had were really good . Vegetables cooked to perfection and tasty meat . The new chef even popped out to ask if all was ok which was lovely after a long day . Many thanks all

Came here for dinner and am still raving about how good the food was. We had starters and mains. The special's board had some delicious offerings also, and it was hard to pick as they all sounded so appealing. I had some fantastic crispy bonbons to start, followed by the special's board offering of slow cooked beef ragu pasta with truffle oil. It was so tasty I am already planning my next meals here - can't wait to return. What a chef!!

No chef so no food. Not a great experience. We had arranged to meet up with friends for a meal on the recommendation of other reviews. Unfortunately there wasn't a chef!! This hadn't been mentioned on the web page. Not impressed as our guests had traveled a fair distance to get here! I doubt we will return. You need to get organised or make it plain that no food is available due to staffing issues.

Three incredible meal choices and delicious triple cooked chips. Chef cooks everything from scratch with an extensive vegetarian option. Locally sourced meat , cheese and handmade fresh desserts.Cosy atmosphere with a view of the kitchen.Highly recommend!

Superb Sunday Lunch . First time visiting after moving to Mid Suffolk in the new year . Had family visit and as part of house warming , booked by phone a lunch time spot . Beautiful surroundings in very remote location opposite stunning church . Staff all very friendly , chef ( northern chap I think called Martin ) very good and interacted with customers , loved his passion for his cooking and knowledge of the history of the restaurant. Meals were absolutely gorgeous. I had roast Beef and was definitely not disappointed, it was traditionally presented with the large crispy Yorkshire’s All I our party enjoyed their food . Compliments to all We shall definitely recommend and return .

This country pub had a very pleasant atmosphere with, unusually, more local drinkers than diners on a Thursday evening. The restaurant area was spacious and nicely decorated in a country-kitchen style. The menu choice was good with some varied dishes and all the food we had was excellent. The service was friendly, polite and efficient.

Really friendly staff and a chef that is incredibly accommodating. Had a lovely birthday meal here. Only got the one photo, as I tucked straight into my starters and mains.

Popped here for lunch on Wednesday last week whilst we were staying in Thetford during half term. Booked a table for 12.30 pm and we were promptly shown to our table. Loved the decor of the place and seemed to be where the locals met for a catch up! I ordered a Beef and Ale pie and wow it was delicious!! The mash literally melted in your mouth and was so fluffy. Compliments to the chef. Highly recommend eating here... great friendly service too.

We returned, ever hopeful it would have improved. The lady waitress is so unhappy “miserable “ towards dining customers! Such a shame as food is ok, expensive for what you get and how you are treated. Once again sorry to bother you and disrupt your evening. Sadly last time we will visit when we are in the area.

This wonderful old pub has been sympathetically refurbished as a welcoming watering Hole, but with a clean, bright , modern dining room!. This has been sympathetically painted with a modern décor. For once you can see what you are eating ! The menu is a blend of traditional fare, with something for the more adventurous, and daily specials as well. Service and food is superb, and attentive staff who respond to any needs. Good value, home cooked fresh food, by a proper chef, and plenty of it!. Large , but cosy , friendly bar area for relaxing with friends . A great pub with good food and real ales in a super rural setting - definitely worth a detour , but book, if you want a table, as it soon fills up.

We visited the Crown for the first time for a meal and it was our anniversary. We didn’t have starters and went for the proper pie. Well it must the best pie I’ve ever had and it is big and delicious. We will definitely come back to this lovely pub well done to all the staff. Rgds Phil&Sandx

It started well and it has been refurbished beautifully, however it was the worst service we have ever experienced. We waited for an hour before we were even seen to. We weren’t checked on throughout our meal and the younger waitress was very inexperienced and could not handle the volume of customers. Ideally, they could have had more staff working that day. Other than that, once we got our food, it was delicious (apart from the rock solid Yorkshire puddings!)

Went for a lovely family meal here. The food was delicious, the drinks were well priced and very competitive compared to other places we have eaten and the staff were all very friendly and left us to chat but were always on hand if we wanted anything and the chef is not only a genius in the kitchen but a really nice chap as well, who came and chatted at the end of the meal. Would highly recommend to everyone, as long as there is space for us to go back.

Lovely friendly village pub serving delicious home made food. Chef, bar and serving staff all extremely good at what they do. 7 of us had a fantastic lunch, a couple went for the traditional Sunday roast, a couple had steaks, and a couple had either Chicken or Beef burger. Everything was top notch, quality, presentation, price and taste, we couldn't fault it. And now having found it, we shall be back again and would equally feel happy just to sit and have a brew. Excellent food at reasonable prices.

The Gissing Crown is an excellent place to go for drinks, food, both or neither. Either way, it's got a superb atmosphere, lovely people all round. Staff is great, Chef is exceedingly friendly and a great chef at that. The food's always been lovely here, I don't think I've had a genuine complaint in years. The drinks are reasonably well priced and the atmosphere has never been a dull moment. Plenty of outside seating area's for the hotter weather and plenty indoors for the winter. Highly recommend this place, it's worth travelling too even if you don't live close!

Efficiently run food orientated pub, helpful friendly staff. Sundays lunch was prompt, side order of creamed veg was thoughtful, but the main courses were bland, the meats were tasteless (was the beef presliced catering portions?, why serve half a chicken carcass on a plate? Perhaps a tastier but smaller portion would be more appetising? Frozen ready made roast potatoes? ) and the Yorkshires were mostly thick dough. Flies were annoying trying to land on the food . It's a charming location but I'm not tasting any south norfolk country flavours.

What a fantastic find, we were recommended by friends and have already booked again for next week. Food is typical pub fare but cooked to a high quality, hot, fresh standard. Nothing pretentious, just good portions by a chef who clearly is passionate about food.

I had my old work colleagues over here. We meet up every few months. The service was outstanding as was the food. All of my friend will be coming back and we left a 20% tip. This should speak volumes in its self. Simply amazing!

Nicely cooked and presented meals. Food and plates hot. Efficient and friendly service. The portions are generous and we were able to take some home. The new decor is lovely. Will definitely return.

We had lunch at the newly refurbished Gissing Crown yesterday. The meal was excellent, real home cooked food and good value. One of the best pub lunches we’ve had this year. It’s obvious the new owner has gone to great trouble to give customers a pleasant experience in comfortable surroundings. The staff are friendly and looked after us very well. A party of 9 ladies were having lunch at the same time as us and I could hear them praising the food. Also top marks for the beautifully clean toilets. We will definitely return!! PS at the moment lunches are only served Thurs through Sunday.

Called in without booking around 5pm, no problem getting a table... lovely fresh refitted restaurant/dining room, food arrived quickly (roast dinner) but other choices available and specials. Good quantities, friendly, efficient staff and very good value for money. Would recommend trying this eatery for food and a drink, at good prices.

The Crown in Gissing has always been a friendly, old fashioned village pub ... for a quarter of a century Kevin and Julie ran a local that attracted people from miles around for its good food and drink and friendly atmosphere. They've gone on to other things now, and the new owner, another Julie, has spent the better part of a year refurbishing and regenerating the pub. Open only a month for food now, the Crown is already establishing a reputation around the area. Completely redecorated, with a new kitchen and much enlarged dining room, (and, for next summer, a courtyard set up for outdoor dining), a new chef (Terry) the Crown is now once again one of the finest destinations for food, drink and good company in South Norfolk ... or anywhere else, for that matter. You can't go wrong!

Just returned from a great lunch in the new restaurant at the Crown in Gissing. The pub has received great refurbishment, everything tastefully done making it a nice place to be.

Used to be cosy friendly now the atmosphere has disappeared along with lots of people too very empty for a Saturday

The Gissing Crown has been renewed. Most of the reviews here, and the photos at the moment, are from when Kevin was the landlord. Julie has changed a lot, extending the restaurant, installing a new kitchen, renewing the toilets, and modernising in front of and behind the bar. Kay is still the barmaid and waitress, but the menu has changed totally.

Under new Ownership, brand new restaurant and Chef! Fabulous all the way! An absolute must to visit - food is delicious, service second to none in beautiful new surroundings. Congratulations to all concerned and looking forward to working my way through your menu!

Went to eat there on 14/09/19. Me and my girlfriend both had the Crown burger. It was quite honestly the nicest burger, chips, and onion rings that we've ever eaten. Staff were lovely and accommodating, and good pints on tap too. Will definitely be going again!

Loved this little pub. The young man behind the bar was great serving us. The only downfall was that there was no food yet, that will change int the coming week though. Would have love to taste it, had been told it is of excellent standard. Other than one woman, the locals were friendly and welcoming. Looking forward to returning there in the future.

We walked up from the next village for traditional sunday lunch. Lovely pork, fresh veg roast potatoes, superb desserts, great beer choices (with advice from locals round the bar). Staff brilliant as well. Harder to walk back home afterwards, but we just made it.

Beautiful little country pub, great food and atmosphere. Well worth a visit!
