The menu is very uninspiring and it’s exactly the same menu every time. They could do with changing it and putting on some more interesting dishes. No salad appeared with the sharing fish platter and all the fish was deep fried - a variety of cooking styles would have been better and the whitebait was unavailable. They refused to light a candle! Zero atmosphere

Went with friends for a pre Christmas get together, initial feelings were that it was a lovely pub. Meal very basic seemed like oven chips , “ting” (microwave) hunters chicken !!! Bit of salad and packet coleslaw…..when asking for sweet menus told the chef had gone home ! Not a very good experience really, but then as they say we will vote with our feet, so won’t be going back

Spontaneous meal out. Group of 7. Staff were helpful & professional. The food arrived quickly, we tucked in so quickly I forgot to photograph the mains! Totally empty plates. Deserts went down well & the picture is of raspberry cheesecake before I tucked in. To compare, the cost of whitebait as a main & sausages & mash with 2 cheesecakes for desert was £38. This was our 2nd visit & The George is our favourite. Friends the enjoyed hunters chicken, & Ferraro richer cheesecake. There is a small car park & also a public car park behind the pub & lots of on road parking close by. Highly recommended, you won’t be disappointed.

Booked a table for 5.30 ,waited a very long time didn’t start eating until 6.45. My husband had the specials coronation chicken which was rubbery texture loaded with mayonnaise, no taste of the usual coronation tang . I had pate which was passable but not great . Then the mains eventually arrived, my husband ordered devon burger which included bacon and blue cheese and sounded lovely , was very salty and very ordinary! I ordered chicken parmigiana which came with garlic flavoured mash , it was tasteless and not restaurant quality . Hugely disappointing. Let the waitress know we weren’t happy and she didn’t charge for the one main . Such a shame as eating out is an expensive treat but we could have done better at home

We were staying nearby for a few days just for a short break, we went into the George on our first day and went back the other two days for lunch. Lovely food and atmosphere. It was carnival weekend in the little town and they were all busy, not too busy to chat but you could see the bustle! This in no way detected from out service or the quality of the food on offer! On Sunday we even took a picture of the roast potatoes to prove they can be done properly in a pub! Kelly is a treasure, her and her team deserve a huge congratulations for keeping everything running so smoothly over a busy weekend. We will be back without a doubt! Thank you!

I eat out quite a lot and I get a little tired of the same thing at every place I go to. Sometimes it's nice to see a few different things on the menu. The wine list covered a good variety of countries and grapes but this time I just wanted fizz! I'm a bit of a pig and it was great not to feel hungry at the end of the meal. Special mention to Kelly who is a star!

The George is a beautiful building and the staff give a very warm welcome and the service is excellent. However the food could be improved upon. One of our party had the pork loin, a salad garnish or a portion of peas rather than a tiny pot of warm coleslaw would of improved this greatly. The Hunters Chicken was served in a strange way, again a salad portion would improve. The fish and chips was generous and was very tasty. I had a chicken Caesar salad. My croutons were frankly horrible, greasy, overcooked and tasted far from nice! The rest of the salad was pleasant and I had a lovely jacket potato alongside. A few specials would be nice reflecting the hotels position in the middle of the Devon countryside. A shame as the potential here is huge!

I had not been to the George since I was quite small and was not disappointed. Had not realised that it had burnt down sadly.... nor did we know about all the village customs. Despite the shocking weather we arrived to an exceptionally enthusiastic greeting and welcome. Nothing was too much for the wonderful staff. We had a lovely beef sandwich and a ploughman lunch. What was there not to like? A lovely lunch and an offer to look around the rooms for a future stay but we were chasing off to North Devon.

With our friends we met for lunch at the George. What an unexpected disappointment. A few days short of Christmas but no Christmas lunch or festive food. Three of us opted for the beef roast. Which turned out to be two thin slices of cold beef in warm watery gravy. It was an unappetising meal which spoilt our lunchtime experience. As always with small communities, good and bad experiences are shared widely which can effect the success of local businesses.

We booked the Five Course Tasting Menu for yesterday evening's dinner at the George. This experience we have been fortunate enough to have had a few times now and it is one of our family's favourite ways to spend an evening together! Joe (The George's Chef) created five fabulous courses for us - including the very topical pumpkin pasta, delicious tempura prawns with pickled vegetables, the amazing belly of pork tea and a lovely sea bass on a beetroot ratatouille- all of these need to be experienced and tasted to really appreciate Joe's incredible skills. He had to take into account that we have a few allergies to contend with, but he came up trumps in dealing with that too - hence the dessert was vegan doughnuts! Thanks to Joe, Sarah and Charlotte for providing a memorable evening. If you like good food with some unique touches - we totally recommend it. Give it a go - you won't be disappointed - just be sure to give the George sufficient notice to enable Joe to create your special tasting meal.

We booked a table for 9 people as it was my wife's birthday. This was booked for 6.30 and because there were 9 of us we had to pre-order food ( not a problem ). On the night my wife was a little late home and the traffic was heavy so we contacted our daughter ( who was already at the restaurant) and advised that we would be about 15 mins late. This was passed on to the restaurant who then said that they could not wait as they were busy and the 6 out of 9 that were already there were served their starters. We arrived and before we even had chance to say hello to everybody our Starters were on the table. I had Mackerel pate which was OK but the butter had melted on the plate.... Once Starters were finished we then had to wait for some time before mains appeared. This was not an issue but after everything that had happened earlier I could not understand it. Probably one of the staff wanted to finish early so had to get our starters out.. When the mains did arrive my Steak was over but could not be bothered to complain.

We had booked Sunday lunch for 12.30 and when we arrived were a little perturbed that seemed to be very few people there. Two of us ordered the roast beef and were pleasantly surprised when we were offered a choice of pink or well done; we opted for the former. Service was very prompt, which was probably not surprising as there were so few people were there. To say that the beef was melt-in-the-mouth delicious is probably an understatement, the vegetables were cooked well and the roasties and the yorkshire pudding were spot on. The people of Hatherleigh are patently late starters, as by the time we had finished our main course, the place was filling up fast. We ordered our desserts, and once again they couldn't be faulted, I was amazed to see when we got the bill that they had been priced at the modest, but realistic price of £4.

I visited on the Tar Barrels Festival weekend, so owing to the crowds there they offered a restricted menu, but still with plenty of choice. I went for the roast of the day and chose beef of the two joints on offer. Plenty of tender tasty meat, a lovely big homemade yorkshire, lots of perfectly cooked and very flavoursome roasties - nice and soft on the inside, but plenty of crispy bits on the outside, served with plenty of home-made tasty gravy and a medley of perfectly cooked fresh veg. Far more than I could manage to eat and all for a very reasonable £8.95. The icing on the cake was that the dog was made welcome and we could sit at our own table in a nice corner of the snug.

Following my review of excellent in January, we revisited as a family in February for a traditional Sunday roast. Having arrived on time we had to wait over 1/2 hour to be seated and only then were we offered the menu. This included the usual meat choices together with "proper" roast potatoes and vegetables. Having placed our order it was then over an hour before the meal arrived, and when it did what a disappointment. The meat was plentiful although the beef was not cooked as ordered for some (well done),the "proper" roast spuds were without colour and had no crispness, and the vegetables were grossly over cooked. The dessert however was OK, but overall a very disappointing meal.l

went and had a stunning meal in the summer and I thought I was way overdue to return so we took our brother and sister-in-law on Saturday. After raving about the pork platter last time I went, I was really happy to see that still on the menu and the guys had that for their main and loved it but there were lots of new options so Gerry tried the aranchini balls for starter, I had my favourite smoked salmon, Andy had the soup. I had the supreme of chicken for main and Gerry had the steak. Everything was absolutely yummy, all freshly prepared and looked stunning. Service was great. The prices were reasonable for the excellent standard of food we had and it was nice to see there were options for things like fish and chips, burgers and steaks etc for the traditional pub grub too. A lovely evening had by all. We'd pre-booked a taxi for 10.30 and our table had been booked for 7.00... when we saw the taxi outside, I couldn't believe we had been there 3 and a half hours enjoying the food, wine and company! Plenty of time to have drinkies, no rushing you to order and swiping your plate away as soon as you've finished so they can get you off your table... I hate restaurants that do that!! Well done The George.

I visited yesterday (19/08/16) with my mum, nan and 4 month old son for lunch. They'd both visited before, but separately, at the end of last year and in January. Neither had been especially impressed with the food then. Well, we were all absolutely blown away with the quality, presentation, value, and above all, taste of the food this time! We spoke to staff and ascertained that there had been a change of management and chef, and the proof was clearly in the pudding as they say. Mum had the burger with a side of onion rings. All was clearly homemade, and we all loved the onion rings as they were so beautifully crispy and not soggy at all. My nan and I both had the salmon which was simply delicious, I could have eaten plate fulls of it! We then had the lemon tart and raspberry and almond tiramisu for puds, all homemade again and presented beautifully. More restaurant dining than pub grub (though they have several pub classics in their menu). The exposed beams give the pub a lovely country feel. Staff, including the owner/manager (?) were welcoming and friendly. We're local and will be recommending to friends and family. We're all looking forward to visiting again soon. Oh, and the baby change facilities were clean and well looked after.

What a delightful evening. Here with friends, we had a sumptuous meal, complemented by wonderful service from the staff. Our friends reconnaissance earlier in the week for a vegetarian choice was more than met by the chefs putting together a veg. menu with a range of options. Several of us were impressed by the deep fried egg yolk with asparagus and hollandaise. Smoked salmon was enhanced by the tuille of potato and the creme fresh. The mains ranged from monkfish, succulent pork, and a particular treat of the cannon of lamb and mini shank pie accompaniment. Presentation on the plate and from the staff was par excellence. A surprising treat was the Valdobbadene prosecco with strawberry and apple notes. The puds did not disappoint either, with a quirky tiramisu in a mini flower pot, and burnt Cambridge cream in a teacup. I loved too the amalfi lemon tart, simple and elegant. Not surprising the restaurant was busy and will no doubt stay that way with a growing reputation. Simply "Georgeous"!

Ironically nearly all these ingredients were on most items on the menu. Even more frustrating is there's a co-op down the road where they could easily have purchased. Obviously too much bother. I would go back to give the new team the benefit of the doubt. One tip is they should be catering for kids better with some paper, pens and general entertainment if they want to take a while with food.

Excellent meat and veg in a friendly local pub, only spoilt by not being served on a piping hot plate

Lunch with my daughter and dog. A warm welcome for us all in the very large bar area. Dog given biscuits and water. Good menu with specials and plenty of choice. The renovations and the loos are a delight. The food; we both had scampi and chips followed by coffee, was well cooked and presented. This pub has plenty of space making it ideal for those with a dog in tow. Good for large parties too. Right in the heart of the town but just a short walk from the public car oark

Visited The George for a Saturday night dinner at the beginning of June, we were suitably impressed, so much so that we returned for Sunday Carvery the following day. My partner said it was the best roast he'd ever had, (don't tell his mother!)Everything about our meals were perfect, veg well cooked, as in not mushy or raw! Tender delicious and mouthwatering meat. We returned last Sunday for Carvery again, wondering if it'd be similar, it was just as good. I'd highly recommend this place to eat. We enjoyed it immensely. I liked the fact that the chef was a modest chap and so easy to talk to, asked about how to cook a roast like he did! Haven't succeeded yet!Our dog was made welcome, and he was remembered from our previous visit, that's great service in my eyes.

This was our second meal at the George. Our first meal was a year or so ago which was Fish and chips as the Fish and chip shop just down the road was shut.Expensive Fish and chips and a tasteless batter. We thought we would try a Sunday lunch. We booked a table. We arrived at the correct time and were pleasantly greeted and seated. The staff are very polite as is the Manageress. We proceeded to the carvery where roast rump of beef, roast pork and gammon,Yorkshire puddings, crackling, and vegetables were on offer. The meat was locally sourced and was tasty and enough was put on our plate. The vegetables were another thing, too well done, carrot purée,never had that before at a carvery. The Yorkies and potatoes and vegetables had had a lid put over them and therefore gone soft, shame really. The crackling was good. The gravy was very tasty,a little on the thick side but still palatable.Overall a fairly pleasant experience but nothing special but then again how special can one make a carvery

Although the building is new it has great character. The decor has been tastefully done and includes lots of memories from the original building. The staff are very friendly, attentive and welcoming and there are plenty of local characters -which is always a great sign!We have had several Sunday carveries now and would highly recommend this ....especially the gammon. Well worth a visit that won't break the bank.

Staff are amazing, treat you like Kings and Queens. The building is absolutely stunning. The food though, oh the food. You'll be hard pressed not to eat too much. Local produce (including the deer) and reasonable prices. Absolutely recommend eating here.

Despite being extremely busy, we were not kept waiting and the food was hot, nicely presented and very tasty. There is a good selection to choose from, all reasonably priced. There is also a hearty breakfast.

We ate both nights here whilst staying in one of the boutique rooms. Service and food is very good and reasonably priced. Nice to have an open fire both in the pub end and restaurant. Recommend when in Hatherleigh

Firstly I should make it clear that this review and rating is as a pub only, as although an evening meal was an option we only had a couple of drinks. I therefore can't comment on the food or restaurant aspect (or as a hotel). It looks older than it actually is, as I believe it was burned down not so long ago and rebuilt. Nevertheless, it has been successfully refurbished to replicate the appearance of the old coaching inn that it was, with wooden beams and so on. The bar area and approach was crowded with locals at the early hour of 6.30 on a Friday evening, making getting to the bar difficult, but once there they dispensed some good ales (Director’s and Tribute were two I recall). However, it did not attract us as a particularly cosy or welcoming bar, or one in which to eat as the couple of large tables were blocked by locals, and one had coats and boxes on it preventing anyone from sitting there. Having said that, there is a designated restaurant area, and you can also have a drink and eat in an area to the right of the entrance up a few steps which overlooks the bar. But although this area was comfortable enough we decided to firstly examine the pub (The Tally Ho) opposite for our evening meal, and return if it was a less attractive option. We didn’t return!

Two night stay Friday into Sunday for a long weekend of eating, drinking, country walking, more eating & drinking, sitting in front of log fires reading the papers and occasionally eating and drinking a wee bit more. Excellent host, superb food, beautiful building tastefully and accurately restored using reclaimed materials, a bed you didn't want to leave and a lovely hot shower that blasted the days walk off you. Loved every minute of it. Wife and I both intend to return in January and February with friends. Only complaints, bed too comfy, didn't want to get up in morning, great food & wine mixed with open fire and leather sofa meant didn't want to leave the bar in evening. Thanks for a great weekend. Cheers!

Had two breakfasts, two evening meals and one Sunday lunch while staying at the George. All good, local food, well cooked and served by friendly, helpful staff. We thought it was very good value for money. Good choices at breakfast and for the evening meals. Would definitely eat here again.

We'd read some good reviews and had had a couple of personal recommendations BUT...... the place just didn't live up to it.My wife had fish and chips. The fish was very fresh and beautifully cooked inside an inedible batter. The pea puree was the consistency of slightly warmed milk, about the same colour, and just as tasteless. The chips were chips.I had the fish cakes and they were good. But served with tartare sauce AND some pak choi in a light soy sauce; it just didn't go together. It got worse. My apple crumble was nicely presented in a large coffee cup with custard in a jug and rum and raisin ice cream in a small metal bowl.. Neither the crumble nor the apple were cooked. Such a shame! My wife had some taste-free poached pears in a watery syrup. By this time the scant service had all but disappeared so we didn't get a chance to complain. We just paid the bill and left.Maybe the chef had a day off or just an off-day.We'll never know and certainly never return.

Stopped for lunch. Staff polite and food brought quickly. Food was ok but expensive for what it was. My brother in law spotted the chef having a cigarette, not appetising and easily avoidable. Would look elsewhere if we hadn't been with someone with a dog.

We visited the George quite by chance as we drove through the town. The lady behind the bar couldn't have been friendlier and she fussed over our daughter and made a very tired little girl very happy! The chef came out and recommended the dishes of the day and he offered our daughter off menu options which again went down very well! The food was lovely, very tasty and well cooked. My husband had the gammon, I had the sausage and mash with onion gravy and our daughter had ham and chips with a huge side order of cucumber and tomatoes (her favourite). The food was well presented and the cleanliness of the establishment couldn't be faulted. Very highly recommended.

Came in for Sunday roast and food was 10/10, best roast we have had for quite a while. What lacked was the service. We booked for 3pm and whilst we appreciate we entered at a busy time wrapping up peak time, service received wasn’t great from the off. One particular server seemed to be in quite a mood and was remarkably blunt “no” when we asked questions about getting some extra yorkshires (which we were a bit surprised the pork meal didn’t come with, but our fault for not reading the menu properly!) Plus someone seemed to think it was a great idea to loudly polish/sort out the cutlery at the bar, which was right next to our table, making conversation quite difficult and picked up by all 4 members of our party. Shame as food was amazing and would go back, but service lacked. 3pm bookings just as important as 12pm as all paying the same!

The restaurant was recommended to me and did not disappoint. First class, friendly service and excellent food. The online menu seemed limited but there were plenty of other options on the specials board.
