Food quality and service very poor. The glass I was given for my drink had lipstick on both sides of the glass. Waiting for over half an hour for food even though we had booked a table for 12.30 when it was not busy Would not recommend this to anyone

We arrived at the George at approximately 14:00 on Tuesday the twentieth intending on having a bite to eat. When ordering drinks (lager & brandy), I was informed there was no brandy, so I asked for a red wine & was told the same - 'we have no red wine'; so, I settled for half a lager! After my partner & I sat down - one with an unwanted drink, we then observed one of the staff discussing loudly with two other members of staff there shift rotors & allocation of holiday entitlement, the conversation lasted for at least half an hour. Surely this conversation should have been taking place in the manager's office & not in a public space for all to here. Also, & as you would expect from the younger generation today one of three members of staff decided to use their mobile phone - 'really, during working hours, maybe she was ordering some brandy & red wine! Needless to say, after the drinks debacle we decided not to stay for lunch. After visiting the George for over forty years I can only say 'standards today aren't what they used to be'!

We’ve been here multiple times since it reopened and the quality started off well but has just got worse. Today I ordered a dry rose wine for my wife and said NOT Zinfandel but Pino Blush or similar. They delivered a Zinfandel which anyone who knows wine (or works behind a bar) will know, is a sweet wine. My wife took it back to the bar and the barman said “It’s the only Rose we do, which is not true because on the other 6 occasions, it’s not been a problem. The barman couldn’t care less and didn’t even apologise. As far as the food order went, no better here I’m afraid. I ordered a plain burger for my wife but it arrived with cheese on it. I ordered the Veggie Curry and it was extremely sweet. Unusual. Needles to say this will be our last visit here sadly. It started off great but is going backwards. There is lots of local competition and so they need to up their game.

Wouldn't have given 2 stars if food hadn't been ok. Went for Sunday carvery stood at bar waiting to ask where we were sat, totally ignored. Eventually menus were brought and one of our party was vegan, so we asked if there was a vegan menu, having already asked at time of booking. Got told one would be brought over. Got seated in room where carvery was served, waiter came taking it he was new as hadn't a clue. Once again asked for vegan options, got told oh well there's vegetarian pattie but he was told that wasn't vegan so came back and said oh there's a vegan chilli. None of us were asked if we wanted a starter, next minute the chilli arrived. We all just went for the carvery. The guy serving was very pleasant and our dog kept getting plenty of bits of meat, however, he kept breaking bits of crackling off the pork with his fingers and eating it. The food was actually very good, although don't think mushy peas go with a carvery, but all ok. We had finished for ages and a waitress came in and asked if she could clear the table. Took 2 plates and went off and didn't come back for a while, then came back and asked if she could clear the plates, like Groundhog day took 2 away then started clearing another table. Young waiter came back and shifted the glasses said to my Mum " have you done with that or what " ! . Never asked if anyone wanted a dessert. There was 9 of us so you've probably missed out on another £100 at least by not asking us about starters or puddings..wont be returning that's for sure even if carvery was nice. Shambolic customer service .

We were bowled over by the warm welcome we had on arrival and being shown to our room. The quality of the beer was excellent and our room was very good value for money. Sadly, the food was not great at all. The veg lasagne was tiny (think close to postage stamp, or a child's meal) and the steak was overpriced and devoid of the usual trimmings - veg and onion rings. The sauce to accompany was a very ambitious £4, so a meal in a pub would have been £30 all in and it certainly would not have been worth that. Perhaps the pub should revise prices to reflect the area and establishment. No word of thanks on payment or on leaving too which was discourteous.

My partner and I stayed here last night, and really wished we hadn’t. Yes our room was ok. Large, but quite dark. The water pressure in the bathroom needed rather a lot to be desired. It took a age for the toilet to refill, and the shower suffered from this lack as well. As for our Evening meal, that was a joke. It all started of well, order taken ( fish & chips for both )which eventually arrived. Fish ok, but we had to hunt out the few chips hiding under the fish. Now to the dessert. We were asked if we would like to see the dessert menu, to which we replied yes! 20 minutes passed before we reminded the bar/ waiter that we were still waiting to see this item. It was brought at once. I should mention that there we only 2 other people eating as well . I ordered the Eton Mess, and was it a mess when it arrived. Big large dinner plate, granola sprinkled around plate. Dollops of what I think was lemon curd, big lumps of what I think was meant to be meringue, which by the way I could even cut into. When I complained to, the man I think was the manager, he said there were all different types of Eton Mess in the world, and this was their interpretation. WHAT! We did not pay for this, by the way. If you stay in room 227, as we did. Make sure you take ear plugs, as when the guests walk around in the room upstairs, you can hear every footfall, from the old creaking floorboards. As a final footnote my partner had to wait over 10 minutes for butter to be brought into the restaurant at breakfast. As none was to be found around the place. Other guests had a similar problem. Would we recommend this hotel, the easy answer is NO!

We booked The George at Piercebridge for our Staff Xmas Party after attending last year, which had a brilliant DJ who provided party games, prizes and entertainment and great food. NONE of that happened this year. WHAT A SHAMBLES! We arrived to see 3 Tables, yes 3 tables set in the whole of the ballroom. As we walked down the stairs you could feel the change in temperature immediately, it was like walking into an Igloo and I bet the iconic Ice Hotel is warmer. We mentioned the heating straightaway but thought it would warm up once the other two tables arrived. The DJ came over (different one to last year) and asked what we were celebrating?!?! When we asked if he was doing entertainment it was a flat No none of that (upon booking our organizer was told this would be exactly the same as the previous year). So, we all took to our seats – the heating issue was not resolving and two of our party had to wear their coats throughout the entire meal which is a shame when you spend that little extra on a ‘Xmas party dress’ that you cant show off. The other tables had also complained to staff about the cold and all we got told was the heating’s been on since 5pm! Service was slow and it took nearly two hours to have 3 courses. There was long waits between courses and the food was cold, the turkey was dry and varied in portion sizes. We had three small terrines of veg and 3 half filled gravy boats between 12 of us! The veg landed first then the meals followed 5 mins later. One of our party is still waiting for carrots – the staff never at one point came to ask how our meal was and we had to chase them around the hotel to ask for more veg and gravy. The custard served with the pudding was abysmal and again it took my friend over 15mins to find someone to ask for more and again that was her walking all around the hotel with said plate in hand!! The chocolate terrine (that resembles scrambled egg on the pic) tasted like baby food we left it and the table after enduring the same xmas songs played on a loop for two hours. The lager went off so you had to wait an eternity for staff to go to the main bar to pull it, the till ran out of change and they also ran out of Gin glasses (again there was 3 tables)! The draft coming from behind the bar was unbelievable, I complained to the bar tender who said it was from the dishwasher and there was nothing she could do about it – you could see the cold air and a neighboring party thought it was smoke it was that visible. Once we had finished the meal, all 12 of us left the ballroom forsaking the disco to warm up. We found a lovely secluded area with anXmas tree and unlit fire. As many of our party needed to defrost we asked three times for the fire to be lit to no avail after 35mins we lit it ourselves. Once the fire was going we provided our own entertainment and actually had a good time. One of the other tables left early as they also and I quote stated ‘This is pants, were off home’. Which left one table in the ballroom to party to a dreadful non party playlist. The Party was due to finish at 12 midnight so at 11:36pm I went to ask for a Baileys as a nightcap to be told the bar was closed and only residents could order drinks. I pointed out the info on booking was 12 midnight but shot down again by the manager stating it’s the law. NO last orders called at all – disappointing 25minute wait for a taxi with no drinks. On leaving my friend was complaining to the manager about all issues listed above, he could not have cared less. All we got told was that we had not mentioned any of this too him – mate we couldn’t even find your staff never mind you! A round of drinks could have been offered but no it’s against the law. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!!!!!!!!! POOR FOOD!!!! POOR BAR!!!! ABYSMAL CUSTOMER SERVICE !!!!!!!!

We visited for a quiet lunch on a Saturday afternoon. The interior is nicely decorated with an open fire near the bar. The lunch menu was reasonably priced, with separate children's menus available. We enjoyed the Hot Beef Sandwich, served with a soft baguette and generous amounts of gravy. The children's chicken goujons were more than enough to fill our children for the rest of the afternoon. We can also recommend the deserts on offer. We didn't have the weather to sit outside, but hope to visit again in the summer.

Lovely sounding menu but when it arrived was disappointing. Small pieces of cut up beef put into a very small baguette. Tired looking green salad leaves without any dressing and terrible cold frozen chips. Worst hot beef sandwich I have ever had. We didn't use the bar or restaurant but stayed overnight in the accommodation. First we were given a room overlooking the river but you couldn't see the river through the single pain windows due to condensation. There was paint missing on the skirting boards, window frames and really badly decorated. We then moved rooms to a nice room at the front of the hotel. Again single pain windows so you can hear all the traffic go by and can see damp adjacent to the windows. The mattresses were really old and uncomfortable to sleep on and my pet hate is when they push two single beds together to make a king size bed but you try to give your wife a hug and fall into the gap. When we booked it online, we booked thinking you get a balcony overlooking the river but that's not the case, you just get giving any room that's available. This place has potential to be amazing but really needs some investment.

We called without booking to be told they had a wedding but restaurant open as usual. Hadn’t booked and were told to take a seat and would be able to take our orders in 15 minutes which was fine. Seemed short staffed due to the wedding so eventually decided to go to the bar place order. Only ordered a main course no starter. Food came and quality was good. We finished and a waitress came to clear our plates and asked if everything ok which it was. We asked if we could see the sweet menu and were told sorry the kitchen had closed. This was 8:10 pm. I’ve never eaten anywhere that doesn’t offer a desert when you have eaten. The web site states food served till 9pm. We paid and left. Haven’t been for a long time. Unfortunately it will be a long time before we go again. Seemed wedding got in the way of service. Needs sorting

On the odd day when it is warm enough, great place for a pint. Not sure about the food but always enough seats. Seems popular for weddings.

Worst KFC meal I have had - tables dirty, cold in the seating area due to air con and the meal really wasn't great- our tower burgers had a dark coloured hard, greasy, crunchy overcooked coating with dry chicken inside. Perhaps it had been sat too long waiting for it to be sold? It certainly wasn't fresh. Would be wary about eating chicken from there again. Not had this experience in a KFC before. Maybe someone higher up should be checking in occasionally to check on hygiene/food safety standards......

This was my only free camping experience of the coast to coast and truly one of my best camping experiences of the whole trip! You get a toilet, shower, washer and dryer, all for free and just donation based. There were even laundry pods. They stopped serving food at 4pm the day I was there but were happy to help me order food if needed and sold a few snacks which kept me going through the night. Also the locals couldn’t have been friendlier and made for a lively night :) would highly recommend!

Always loved the Crown in Hawes, beautiful pub with amazing food, but I've just been again with different management and they've completely upped the standard. The food was incredible, Amir the chef is brilliant, I recommend the beef stifado. The owners Toni and Rob are so friendly and welcoming, we did not want to go home. Will definitely be going back.
