Over hyped pub food. Atmosphere Saturday night was dead and restaurant empty by 9pm. Food too salty. Enthusiastic staff but so inexperienced. Not a great evening and far too expensive for pub food - won’t be repeating the experience.

Called here for lunch on 17th July en route for north Kent. Lunch was very good indeed so much so that 2 members of our party of 3 stated it was perhaps the best meal they had experienced in a long time. (Chicken Snitzel and Steak and ale Pie). It was in fact so good that the 3 of us called here again on the 19th on our return journey and the exceptionality of the food was the equal of the first visit. Thank you.

I’ve eaten at The George a few times recently and met up with friends for drinks. I think the service has improved significantly and the food is good value too! The bar team, led by Ren and Paul, do go out of their way to be friendly, welcoming and deliver a swift and efficient service. A dramatic improvement over the previous short lived management team.

Nice food, but the service was so slow. We didn’t get our starters for an hour and even our drinks took such a long time to come that we had to ask where they were. Our waiters were very young with what seemed like little training. There wasn’t any initiative to bring side plates with a sharing starter; condiments for the mains; a cup with the pot of tea, so we were waiting constantly to be able to start our food and drink. It was almost laughable how poor the service was - a shame as the restaurant is really nicely furnished etc, but we won’t be rushing back.

Just had a spontaneous late Sunday lunch at the George. Food was lovely - piping hot - fresh vegetables and delicious beef and chicken. We’ve been eating here for a number of years and never been let down. We have celebrated birthdays and anniversaries as a family and with friends. The service has always been excellent and the food delicious. My favourite place to sample sticky toffee pudding too! My favourite! If we could find a house in the village we’d move there just because the local would be so good!

Used to go here regularly with work for team meals, but it's been a while since I had last been, and I had heard a few stories that it had lost it's appeal, but was in the area so thought we'd go for some food. Their website states that food is served from 12 noon to 9pm. However, when we arrived today at 4.15pm, the place was nearly empty with just two tables occupied with people drinking. After a few minutes a member of staff appeared and when we asked for a table for food. we were informed that the chef hadn't turned up and that the member of staff dealing with us was covering for them, but that they wouldn't be doing any food for at least an hour. So clearly they weren't covering. Shame, it was always a good place for food and the service was friendly, but today the stories I'd heard about a drop in service levels and quality were confirmed. Won't return - you're either covering or your not, you clearly were not busy, but despite this, couldn't appear to be bothered about undertaking you covering duties, so our business was taken elsewhere.

The restaurant has been beautifully renovated and full of character. The server was a delightful young man, inexperienced, but very helpful, polite and attentive. The menu, for us is somewhat limited, but our choices were served perfectly and very tasty. A bonus, for me, was Timothy Taylor Landlord at the bar. The owner, Ren, took the trouble to greet us and chat at the table which was a nice touch. Pleasant atmosphere. Certainly will visit again.

After visiting a zoo nearby, we wanted some lunch. It was Easter Sunday and we hadn't booked so we had no idea whether we would get in anywhere. They had some parking round the back, but it is limited. We were lucky that they had availability. We were greeted by a polite young man behind the bar, who gave us the only menu they were serving that day which was a three course Sunday menu for £33 per person which we thought was great value. I am quite a picky eater, so the starters were a bit of a long shot but I was happy to try it, and happy with the rest of the food. We were offered to sit in the bar or the restaurant to which we chose the restaurant, The décor was beautiful. I had the roast chicken for mains, it was really tasty. Sadly my stuffing was burnt and the bread sauce wasn't to our taste but everything else was edible. I then had the chocolate brownie with vanilla ice cream for dessert and WOW it was the best brownie I have ever had, it was gooey and had bits of what tasted like fudge and was so soft! I'd go back just for the dessert alone! My boyfriend enjoyed all of his mains, he had the sticky toffee pudding and said it was very good! All the staff were so lovely and sweet. Overall, we would definitely return.

Very average roast dinner that I can make better myself . . Potatoes were tiny , parsnips hard , could have done with an extra slice of beef . Had to pay extra on a roast dinner if wanted red cabbage or cauliflower cheese . Paid for red cabbage that was luke warm and watery. Service from the moment walked into the pub was poor . Unfortunately the signs were there to leave before we ordered but we thought we would give them the benefit of the doubt . Had to ask to order drinks and then chase it up . They weren’t even busy so that shouldn’t have happened . A total waste of our money .

We have been to the George a couple of times since discovering it a few months back and have never been disappointed. We booked the private seating area for a 60th surprise birthday and from booking to the actuall day the guys at The George couldnt do enough for us. The pub itself is rustic and cosy yet very stylish and the menu is impressive for all dietary requirements. We relaxed for what turned out to be hours longer then we thought during the 60th celebrations as we were so well looked after by the team and management. Thank you so much, we will be back and so will the rest of the party as they couldn't fault the service or the food at all. A little gem of a pub!

Gone downhill faster than Franz Klammer ever did. Been a while since we were last here - used to be busy, with good food and decent service. Should have realised when we were able to get a large table with very little notice that things are different now. The food was disappointing, zero atmosphere with a completely empty dining room on a Friday night and more expensive than was justified by the menu and service. Summary: Overpriced for very lacklustre food and service.

Our first visit under the new ownership. What a difference. Once a warm, cosy and busy pub it has been replaced by a cold and empty space. The service was slow at best. After waiting over 30 minutes for our starters my pork &duck rillette arrived in a har, covered in brown gunk with 4 small pale discs of anaemic stale bread. It was inedible. The waitress removed the dish, I wasn't offered an alternative. I was then confronted by the manager who basically told me I got what I ordered! We then waited a further 40 minutes for our main course. My steak was awful. I ordered medium rare, the fat wasn't rendered, no crust and was more blue/rare than medium rare and tough as old boots. It hadn't been rested properly as the blood was seaping out on the plate. Undercooked and badly cooked. The only edible food on the plate were the chips. The waitress asked if things were OK I replied it's awful. She walked away. My partners pie was just about passable but definitely not worth the cost. Total bill for 2 £75 included one drink each, one starter and two mains, one returned virtually untouched. Avoid at all costs.

Extremely disappointing! We went for Sunday lunch, but what was served was disgraceful. I ordered roast chicken which came as two chunks of chicken breast and a random piece of thigh, which was disgusting, My partner ordered pork belly which was mainly fat and unappetising. No one came to check during the meal to ask if everything was ok but only when they came to collect our plates. We said that the meal was very average but there was no response or follow up. It should be noted that this pub has changed hands and no longer achieves the quality of cuisine or service that it used to. Would never go back!!

Was always a regular for us. Amazing service and good food. Sadly only one of these now stands, the food was still of high standard. However, as mentioned by a bar staff employee they have new waiting staff serving and unfortunately this created a bad dining experience. Little things that add to a dining experience is how you are waitered on. I’m not expecting Michelin star but just some engagement from staff would be nice. Item after item not brought to the table with no apology, I spent more time walking to the waiters hub in the restaurant to ask for the items we ordered. Deserts delivered with no cutlery. Spare glasses just left on the table. They seem to have lost the atmosphere, no music anymore. It was always such a lively and atmospheric restaurant. The owner seemed to want to talk only to the people he knew (maybe regulars) . When we left only one member of staff thanked us for our custom. The owner and other staff just walked past and ignored us I would return for the food, but will wait a year untill staff are fully trained and have a level of customer service the restaurant deserves

Well. What can I say. This was the first ‘date night’ for my husband and I in some time. I wish I had paid heed to the negative reviews as was a ‘child free’ night totally wasted. We are not fussy people. So could have let the 1 hour wait (between ordering starters and then being served…) go. Not to mention the many items advertised in the menu being unavailable. Again, would let this go if what we were served was half decent. Sadly, all 4 starters were inedible. Calamari such low quality and drenched in salt- so have constitution of an ox but couldn’t eat it. When sent back was told by the young serving man that ‘the chef doesn’t add any salt’. Implying we were lying. Chicken wings stone cold. Houmous served chilled and with cold flat bread. At that point made decision to leave. Complained to manager and albeit very understanding ie ‘we are having a bad night’, still made us pay for drinks we wouldn’t had bought had we not needed to wait so long. ‘Yes pal, not as bad as our night’! Felt sorry for very young staff ( who were very polite but out of their depth and left to fend for themselves) on the brunt of many complaints this evening. Speaks volumes that we ran in to the table of 4 next to us at Atlantis fish and chip bar half an hour later! Just awful, they need to try and avoid things going wrong and learn how to deal with them when they do. We will never return. A simple gesture of compensation for a terrible experience goes a long way!

Booked a table for two for our wedding anniversary. When we arrived the girl in jeans and a white shirt showed us to a table in the bar we said we want the restaurant to which she replied it’s closed! We ordered starters and my wife choice was not available, she made an alternative choice I ordered calamari which was inedible when it arrived, floppy and the sauce was awful. A young lad came and ask if everything was ok and I told him about the calamari and he apologised and took it away. Nothing from manager or chef to see what they could do! We ordered mains and my wife said she would like sweet potato fries in lieu of skin on chips and would pay any difference. The girl said that was not possible we would have to order an additional portion of the side dishes as they cost more! In astonishment I said look, on the sides menu skin on fries cost £4 and sweet potato fries £5 so charge me £1 more! This was to much for the brain of this girl who said she would have to ask the kitchen, to which I said you do that and we will tell you if we are going to eat here! She returned saying they would do it! Not surprising our mains were well overcooked maybe we should have left without eating as this was now clearly a battle of Wills! We declined desserts and asked for the bill. A chap on the only other table with dinners said! Well done, I had the same problem wanting ice cream instead of custard on my crumble. This used to be such a great place to eat!!!!! Will never return!!

They were then brought. On the main, the steak had a fishy flavour and was very pale in colour. It was to be fair very tender. And cooked as requested. Medium. Temperature was not hot but just about acceptable. My wife’s meal was ok. Nothing special. I ordered a second glass of wine which was forgotten about and I had finished the meal. The other drink was forgotten about too. I cancelled both. It was a shame as the restaurant is very nice, and we’ve eaten there before and it was very good. It was probably a one off.

The mains weren’t any better. A tomahawk pork steak at £25 looked like it was slapped on the plate and the fat wasn’t even rendered. The 5oz steak didn’t look much either. All the food served looked like it had been done by someone that didn’t care. No-one came outside where we were sitting and to be honest it was hard to justify the £90 bill. This place is quirky and the idea behind it is really nice, full of interesting events and activities, selling art, craft and music. However, there are a few flaws: staff could be more welcoming (they seem so busy running around without smiling even when they don’t have many clients), but more importantly the place is not clean enough. Every time I went tables were sticky and had left over crumbles and food from previous customer, you pick up one of the free books on display and they are all dusty, same as the table games… it doesn’t give you much trust on the state of the kitchen. Menu is varied enough with an eye for intolerances and vegan/vegetarian which is great however quality of the food is just ok, a bit bland and coffee very substandard even compared to a chain like Costa. The place has surely potential, the idea is great, but there is surely room for improvement.
