Second time visiting this pub but first time after new management. Went for a birthday party of a family member, the bar has a cozy old feel to it with many a drink on tap or in bottle. Then we were shown to our table (venue room), all set out to fine top standard. Our host Sarah was amazing; tending to orders, sorting drinks ,food the lot. Compliments to the chef for the food.

Visited a few times before but not local and not been for 5+ years. Always been great and today was no exception. Travelled from Dartford to meet friends now living in Devon so Mere is a nice 'half way spot'. Our son is in a wheelchair - and a wider one since our last visit. Means it didn't fit through 2 of the walk ways to our table. However the staff were really helpful and understanding in getting us to our table. Great setting, food choice/taste and not bad prices either. Hopefully we'll be back within the next 5 years!! Understand the staff are fairly new to the pub and it was nice that the boss introduced himself - and explained about his plans going forward. Even better was the offering of a variety of delicious desserts! Seriously - I wish them the very best in these challenging times.

Room- nice and comfortable. Pleasant aspect. No complaints. Food- not good. The staff were apologetic and admitted that there were problems due to staff being away. Main course had been left standing under heat lights and ruined the already substandard meals. Breakfast was dismal. No offers of refill on coffee. No toast other than the unbuttered slice on the plate under one sausage, egg, one rasher and an end of a tomato. We had high hopes due to the website imagery. Staff-apologetic and pleasant.

My family and I stayed here for 2 nights in their family room. Upon arrival we couldn't have been made to feel more welcome than we did by both the owners and their staff, especially that we arrived rather late. Would thoroughly recommend staying here, as their hospitality was second to none, and their own brand coffee, which can be purchased direct from them, is a must!

The Sunday lunch was not anywhere near to what you would expect from the George. By the time the veg arrived the main course was cold and the meat was that tough and sinewy it was impossible to eat. I was not the only one to complain and felt sorry for the waitress who had to make the apologies. Will not be visiting until I again see good reviews.

We had a private room for a family function and were very happy for the afternoon. Buffet food was ready when we arrived and staff were happy to add a few things we requested and keep plates topped up. The food was delicious and a great variety to cater for adults and children. The owner was so helpful and friendly, bringing a huge plate of ice creams and flakes out to us after food had been cleared away. All the staff were lovely and very quick with anything we asked for. We’re looking forward to going back for dinner or drinks soon

Mere is an ideal half way stop between S W London and Devon. We passed The George on our outward journey and decided it would be a good place to have lunch on our return. We were not disappointed! The lunch time menu was very good value and the food was good as well. The service was very friendly, if a bit slow. This didn’t really matter as we weren’t in a rush. We would stop there again should we be going that way.

Very welcoming. A birthday lunch out. Ample meals from a very reasonably priced menu. We had hearty soups as starters (so ample they might suffice with the warm bread rolls), a chilli, sausage and mash, and gammon and egg as mains, and frankly we were stuffed. All home made food. A good log fire, a bit of history and convivial atmosphere exactly as a good pub lunch should be, plus good beer of course. Will be back soon.

We met with friends for lunch and all ordered a Sunday roast, 3 meat and 1 vegetarian. The vegetarian roast consisted of the same veg as everyone else with slightly more roast potatoes, nothing else. I asked where the nut roast or whatever similar might be and was told it was just the veg! The price was exactly the same as the meat meals. It was all very tasty but just a heads up, if you’re looking for a vegetarian roast this is not it. I mentioned to the staff team that I didn’t think it really was a ‘vegetarian roast’ and someone else said they had told them that before. It’s a good place to eat but if you’re veggie it’s worth checking ahead to find out the detail of what the option is.

Called in for Sunday Lunch. We ordered the Large Roast? 4 small frozen Roast Potatoes, frozen Yorkshire Pudding, probably equal to 1 slice of Beef. Vegetables but a very small pot of Cauliflower Cheese about 2 spoonfuls all between 4 of us. I dread to think what the small roast was like. Won’t be going back anytime soon.

Our evening meal a couple of weeks ago was pretty indifferent and this was after we had had to wait a very long wait after ordering without explanation,. Not even nibbles offered to take the edge off our hunger during wait. I vowed I would not return as I'd had a similar experience a couple of years ago. Anyway, as the pub used to do really excellent lunch baguettes and sandwiches I decided to give them another go. Sadly this was a mistake. My prawn cocktail sandwich (with chips and salad) was part toasted on the top sandwich where the plate had been left under a warming light. The prawns were small and not juicy and sauce was cheap tasting and not enjoyable. Lettuce and cucumber were both hot so not the refreshing salad I was looking forward to. Such a shame that this town doesn't merit better. The pub looks gorgeous from outside but food is best avoided in my view.

I met up with a small group of friends here one quiet weekday for lunch. We had been here before with no issues. However, on this occasion it was not good. This was because a new manager had only been in post a few days and it was clear that he/she had kept the place open without first checking that food of the correct amount and quality was available to fulfil the menu. Big mistake in my mind! Other than the sticky toffee pudding which was excellent, the rest was below par with several items from the menu not available. One of my colleagues had the ham and cheese platter which came without ham until we complained, the actual quality and portion size of this was extremely disappointing (fortunately he was not actually charged for this). The waitress was friendly and as helpful as she could be, but at one point did neglect to bring the drinks we ordered. We were assured that a new menu would be ready soon, but the damage to the pub’s reputation had already been done for us – shame.

My wife and i were visiting the Christmas Light Trail at the NT property at Stourhead and we wanted somewhere nearby to stay overnight and discovered the George at Mere as it was only minutes away. A lovely recently modernised room gave us a comfortable night's sleep. As it was a Monday before Christmas we were the only guest and we received the undivided attention of a lovely lady who served our super evening meal. My wife was very impressed with the beef and ale pie which was packed with chunks of lean beef. The breakfast was superb and the chef had even gone to the trouble of preparing a bowl of fresh fruit - pineapple, melon, mango etc. The toast was thick granary bread - just to our taste. The lights at Stourhead were fantastic and the George was great - we will return next year!

The A303 is a road that must have been devised by Dante in one of his circles of hell. And at the moment with the road works it is particularly purgatorial. Virtually anywhere to stop on the roadside is crushed with desperate travellers seeking sustenance and a loo. For those who travelled in days of yore and know the route, they will get off the road and travel to Mere. A blessed relief. We did so earlier in the month and had a recuperative lunch at The George. Food and service very good. But mostly, it's just bliss to be off the A303, in a lovely village with shops and services where you recharge your batteries. We enjoyed our meal at the George - there is a car park. We had the best cheesy chips, don't judge us!, we'd had in an age. Highly recommended.

After this I went to the bar to buy drinks , we asked for coffee and hot chocolate but were told to go to the coffee shop across the road if we wanted this !!!! I then asked about the lunch menu and was told abruptly ‘we serve at 12 o’clock ‘ It would have been nice to have been given a menu even so as it was only 20 mins to go.We didn’t stop for lunch.I would never return here. I then went in and ordered drinks, I asked where the toilets were and the landlady told the barman ‘don’t give him the code till he has paid’.I was then given a receipt with a code to open the toilets.Well, in all my years of travelling the world, I have never had such poor service.Refusing my 82 year old mother the toilet is a disgrace.Needless to say, we didn’t stop for lunch.Avoid at all costs.

Decided to break our journey back from Kent to Plymouth by stopping off at Mere and booked into the George Inn. A very old quaint hostelry with the traditional uneven floorboards and wonky room. Our room was quiet,(at back of the pub) clean and the bed really comfy. The roast dinner we ate in the evening was hot and tasty though the roast potatoes had been reheated. The breakfast however was lovely, plentiful and freshly cooked. We spent a few hours in the morning wandering around this delightful village and visited the lovely church with its beautiful stained glass windows. Stourhead House is only a few miles along the road and as we are National Trust members we took the opportunity to visit this also. Due to the time of year the house was not fully open, nevertheless we had a lovely walk to the lake and little village. Will visit again in the spring/summer when I am told, the gardens are spectacular and we will no doubt stay once again in Mere.

So sad the pub down the road was closed for refurbishment, where the small portions do not mean ‘for a 3 year old’. I am currently a restaurant manager myself and I don’t know why i didn’t send it back. Wouldn’t recommend to a friend. Also weren’t offered Ice or lemon in my coke or a napkin with my food. En route from home to Somerset, Mere seemed a good place to stop for lunch on a cold January day. We picked badly. A vacant parking spot in the centre of town and we were right opposite the George Inn. The menu was extensive, and the staff very friendly, so we picked a light option, but were dismayed byb how cold the premises seemed. Even the fire was COLD. YES IT REALLY WAS, a video on the front of the fire grate heater made one think there was heat, but there was none. The few radiators were luke warm, and the other fireplace grates had NO fires. My wife's beef and horseradish sandwich was barely edible, My Mushroom Rarebit was tasty, and the vegetables ok, but everything got cold quickly. Shame, could have been quite nice. I wonder if the hotel rooms are as cold?

We crawled in on a wet and miserable night. The bar was adequate but pretty cheerless although the staff throughout the evening were helpful, friendly and welcoming. The dining room is just that; it lacks frills but was clean and adequate. The food was hot, well cooked and nicely presented but the real stars were the chips; the best that any of us had eaten in a very long time with a dry but crispy casing of wonderfully soft centres. This is not somewhere we would choose to go for an evening out but it was very acceptable for a hot meal adjacent to our accommodation.

The bar staff were warm and inviting particularly towards our dog. the menu was pretty average and I chose steak in a brown baguette. The steak was tasty and tender but it could have been trimmed better. Furthermore the undressed leaves were somewhat "yesterdays". The biggest fault was the baguette which frankly was not at all fresh. If they had no fresh baguettes then simply tell me! My wife had an excellent sandwich on White so I would go back.

This place suits older couples but definitely not family’s. not ideal at all for 2 adults & 2 children. For the price £130 a night we’ve stayed in a lot better places cheaper. Stopped here for a snack on our way to Devon. I had fish gougons, my husband had cheeseburger and our friends had scotch egg, these were all fine but the highlight was the chips. I'm not usually a great fan but have to say they were lovely, you only get a few chips but certainly enough for a snack. Would certainly eat there again.

Tired environment, no frills service, pleasant staff though however no knowledge of menu. Fish n chips very nice, roast looking a little anaemic but very nice apparently, not sure I got the flat Yorkshire though. The homemade horseradish sauce was the star of the show.

I have been stopping off at the Georgie asa good stop-off between London and Cornwall for many years. The accommodation is good and reasonably priced with a very good breakfast.

Having eaten here many times, our visit yesterday was a great disappointment. A lasagne was served luke warm and with a very basic salad instead of the usual, and a steak and kidney pie was mostly over salted gravy with only a few chunks of meat, topped with a separate very pale crust. I have had so much better here in the past! These points were brought to the attention of the waiter and were taken back to the kitchen, but there was no response from management. I am afraid this has put us off eating there again. A very good food reputation has been built up here over several years, but it is easy to let it slide away, such a shame.

Appalling food. My husband ordered steak and ale pie. A bowl of gravy arrived with a few bits of meat in it, topped with a hard biscuity looking disc of what may have been short crust pastry. The mash was INSTANT POTATO! He did not touch it. I am pretty sure my spinach and ricotta cannelloni was half a supermarket ready meal. One small cannelloni heated up in a dish too short for it and all dried up at the edges. My salad was the tiniest pile of baby leaves. No dressing or anything else. I ate it because I was hungry but I wish I hadn’t. Definitely one to cross off my list

We were recommended The George Inn by a local. We were a group of 4. The service was excellent and the staff were very friendly and courteous. The food let this place down one of us had the cod and chips the cod was not great the chips were probably similar to mc Cain but deep fried not real tasting chips. The scampi was good chips let it down peas were hard and undercooked. Baguettes were fine tuna and onion.

My friends would hesitate to describe themselves as boisterous because we are mature people of a certain age but we all thoroughly enjoyed the hospitality, service and friendliness of The George. The food and the service was impeccable even though we were late sitting down to dinner because were were meeting up after a while of not seeing each other and had a lot of catching up to do..

Following a shocking experience at The Red Lion we found ourselves at this nice pub restaurant. We were happy to have found a good pub where we could have dinner after a long day. The food was decent and the staff were very pleasant. If we found ourselves in Mere again we would undoubtedly drop in for a pint and perhaps a meal.

Went here for Sunday lunch with a friend, it was very busy but the staff was really on ball, No wait for dinner, which was excellent, cooked to perfection, As for the sweet, it was to die for, only wish it had been bigger. Well done to the George. Highly recommended this pub x

We seem to have caught the George on the back foot today. The bar lighting was causing problems which for 5 minutes or so occupied the only member of serving staff ducking and diving between switches and an unseen person at the fuse box. The bar lady was clearly phased when asked about what food was gluten free , referring to a rather scruffy hand written note which had been initially difficult to trace. Having laboured the point about the food being gluten free I discovered that not all of what was claimed to be OK proved to be so - when in doubt consult the chef!

Staying overnight in the George Inn was a very relaxing experience. The room was very clean, spacious and comfortable. The staff were friendly and attentive, and the evening meal was well cooked, tasty, good value for money. Breakfast was also very good with fresh fruit, cereal, croissants as well as cooked breakfast menu that should cover most tastes. We look forward to visiting again if the opportunity arises.

Having read some of the negative reviews on here I wasn't quite sure what to expect. I was booked in through work for 2 nights and my room was warm clean and comfortable. Secondary glazing is welcome. There is a local bell which chimes through the night but it didn't affect me at all.

One of our favourite places to eat in Mere. Tasty freshly cooked food. They have two menus, snacks/smaller plates and a main menu. There are a variety of 'specials' too.

On our way to the south coast stopped in Mere for lunch refreshments. The George inn was convenient. We had a couple of drinks (Shandies as it was so hot) and then a couple of sandwiches, Roast Beef for me and Ham for the wife. Both were excellent. Quick service and excellent value.

The best thing about this pub is the WIFI is good and the beer is cold. The food is pretty basic and even the real basics (like fish and chips and steak and ale pie) were pretty bland.

Stayed for one night. Room was clean and tidy - although shower head was a bit dusty. I know its a pub - but it didn't go quiet until gone 1am! Breakfast menus could be a bit cleaner - spots of grease etc. Felt like the breakfast room could have done with a good dusting! Having said all that the staff we had contact with- at check in, at the bar and at breakfast were all very friendly and helpful.

Would just like to let people know how lovely our visit was her last week. We arrived just as breakfast was finishing but were still offered the service. The lady serving was incredibly friendly nothing was too much trouble. Excellent value for money and wide variety of choice.

I have a dairy intolerance and was served a meal with butter, slaw and mayonnaise after I had told them about my intolerance. The meal was taken away and I was served a Ham baguette with most of the meat inside being just fat and I found spread in the roll. The mustard turned out to be mayonnaise with mustard seeds in it. My family member asked for Fish and chips yet she was served Fish with French fries. I ended leaving the cafe completely disgusted and will never return.

Wedding coordinators both amazing. Prompt and professional support and advice. Food was better than some Michelin restaurants I’ve been to. Five star quality; amazing service and would highly recommend. Venue went over and above what was necessary from free coffee to supporting external vendors and accommodation

We came here for lunch and as we’ve been several times before, I was expecting to have the chicken Caesar salad. Well the menu has changed and there were no salads to be had at all! I opted for the fishcakes. They were disgusting! Also, I think they should rename them potato cakes as I couldn’t find any fish by taste or sight! And at £15 a plate, I thought it was absolute daylight robbery! I will never return to this place
