A disappointing experience. We had booked and checked disabled, but no booking on arrival. The "special award winning" pie was very poor the pastry was very poor with lumps of fish in. One of our group could not eat the pastry. Overpriced for pub food. On trying to use the Butcombe app there was no signal ( said a mast must be down!) and the staff took a physical card only which one of our group happened to have. The service was poor. We will not reccomend this place for lunch and will not go again.

This was our second visit to The George.. We had enjoyed our first visit so much that we decided it was worth the forty minute drive to go again. The George did not disappoint. There was plenty to choose from on the menu, but four of us chose the fish pie which was absolutely delicious. Perfect pastry filled to bursting with fish, lemon scented sauce, and well cooked and presented vegetables. The cheesecake was delicious, pineapple , lime, coconut and chocolate. A knockout dessert. The pub is quirky, small comfortable dining rooms with a few tables in each gave a cosy atmosphere. There is a garden area too for warmer summer days. A real treat , with friendly service and relaxed atmosphere.

Cannot fault The George Inn, simply cannot!! Super service from the outset. Greeted with big smiles with menu choices explained and how to order food as we chose to sit at an outdoor table on the glorious terrace area - with a view of the village church and sounds from a cricket match being played on the cricket pitch below. Food was delicious and freshly prepared. Piping hot. Can highly recommend the burger & chips and fish and chips with homemade tartare sauce. Car parking spaces can be found beside the premises along with much parking in the village itself if the car park is busy. Locals along with tourists (like ourselves) were enjoying the food and ambiance out on the patio. We even returned for a second evening meal the following day as we enjoyed ourselves that much!! Please stop by The George Inn when you can, you won’t be disappointed by the venue in this most beautiful and historic village between Frome and Bath.

Although I have visited The George before it was a while ago. I visited today for lunch with family members and everything was excellent. We ate on the lovely terrace and ate from the Brunch menu. Two of us had Caesar Salad, one Eggs Benedict and one Beef Burger. The beer and wine was also of a high standard and the meals were perfectly prepared and served by charming staff. I would not hesitate to return.

We visited on a Sunday afternoon without booking, for a bite to eat and catch up with family. The recently refurbished terrace was an absolute sun trap, and the perfect place to spend an afternoon eating and drinking with some lovely views. The food was delicious and everything cooked to perfection, despite us visiting well after the lunch rush was over, and service from Linda and her team was exceptional, as always! We’ll definitely be back soon!

We stayed for 3 nights at this fabulous Inn we were wowed by the history - the location was stunning - we could spend a week taking in the view from the terrace at the rear of the Inn. However the jewel in the crown is undoubtedly the team who look after you so well . We had a bit of an issue - we locked our keys in our car - 5 hours from home - a stressful day is an absolute understatement however the team in this fabulous Inn made such a difference - with a very special mention for the very lovely and hardworking Lola - Lola - who continually checked in with us to make sure we were ok as we waited endlessly for a locksmith to assists - absolutely outstanding service - I cannot begin to explain how grateful we were for Lola - - Butcombe Brewery we just want to highlight that you have a fabulous team working at the George Inn but especially an absolute superstar who is called Lola ❤️

It may date from the 14th century but The George at Norton St Philip is a restaurant for the English 21st century offering food a level or two above the usual country pub fare. It was very busy when we arrived for a birthday celebration on Saturday lunchtime but we were soon led to our table in the vaulted dining room. Our drink orders were quickly taken to give us time to explore the imaginative menu. The crispy croquette of pulled Aston Easton lamb shoulder with devilled kidneys was wonderful but the battered cod came a very close second with other members of the party enjoying a rump steak with bearnaise sauce or a selection of smaller starter dishes like deep fried calamari and vegetarian options. Butcocombe Gold and Rare Breed ales kept dehydration at bay. Dogs were welcomed although car parking was a bit tight on a busy Saturday lunchtime. Minor criticiesm - the steak was more medium than medium/rare and a bit on the pricey side but generally the whole meal was good value for money. I will definitely be back.

This pub used to be lovely (local to our family home for the last 20 years) but we were sorely disappointed when we visited this weekend. It’s been redesigned inside and all the charm has gone. It’s very superficially “ye olde country pub” style, presumably decorated by someone with no taste who doesn’t know the area at all and has is tone deaf to the history of the building. Such a loss to the village. On top of that the staff were shrill and fretful, particularly the manager on the day who ushered us to sit outside in the freezing wind despite there being tables indoors. It’s lost all its warmth and welcomeness and may as well be a theme pub for rich tourists in central london. What a shame.

Positives...really lovely refurbed room, in a beautiful building. Super comfortable mattress and even though we stayed in a dog friendly room, youd never know it. Great customer service, and got a little flask of oat milk from the bar staff to take to our room, a great idea! All the staff were helpful and friendly, which is quite the rarity nowadays. Roast beef on Sunday was fantastic, everything on the plate was cooked to perfection, worth visiting for that alone! Lots of choice on the breakfast menu. Negatives...boutique rooms, but only 4 tiny amaretti biscuits between 2 guests (why bother?), no sweetener either. The noise (we stayed in Coach) from the bar below was like being IN the bar. Ear plugs were provided, but only one pair (were we meant to share?) we went and asked at the bar for another pair. Our room at the front was next to the road so lots of traffic noise and vibration from 4am Monday morning. We arrived at 7pm on Saturday and struggled to find parking in either of the car parks (there is the Fleur De Lys opposite the George, both we full). After going out and returning on Sunday at 4pm, we again struggled to park. We saw other people use the car park and walk off down the road, meaning a full car park and having to wait until someone left after dinner. Its a very popular place to eat, but there is no parking reserved for hotel guests, which makes for a stressful wait on the road until someone leaves. Would make more sense to keep the Fleur De Lys car park for hotel guests, as its a small wet led pub. Breakfast was variable. One morning we were given one slice of toast each and a pot of jam to share....the next, 2 slices each, and 2 pots of jam. Missing hash browns on the full english, but the field mushroom was exceptional. I was upsold the 2 for £15 cocktail offer at dinner yet when we later checked after paying, we had been charged full price for both. Also, there was some confusion about the £50 dinner tab for the sunday sleepover offer, so had to get the server to call the supervisor over which felt awkward. A server dropped a tray of glasses in the hallway and swore loudly whilst we were eating, which wasnt ideal. Overall, its a lovely place, with a palpable sense of history and we had a good time. Not a great time, but a good one. Its a shame the parking was an issue, there seemed a bit of skimping on the breakfast/tea tray, and the traffic woke us Monday morning...but this can perhaps be forgiven as its an old building and its lovely it still stands after many centuries.

Our recent dinner at the George Inn was delicious, and the staff were very friendly. There are several dining rooms. The room we were in at the front of the building was cozy and full of charm. The menu provided a very good range of food choices. My husband enjoyed his venison pie so much that he said it was probably the best meal he had during our recent 2 week visit to the UK. As we were staying the night here, we also got to enjoy the included breakfast. The available breakfast menu included quite a few options beyond the traditional Full English, though the Full English was absolutely delicious!

Another visit on a Butcombe Wednesday DealMy wife & I both had the Bavette SteakNicely presented & very enjoyableWe have been to 3 different Butcombe pubs in the area over last few months, all using the same menuBut we noticed this time an extra line has been added to the menu sheet, Team RewardsOptional 10% added to your bill !!Why is it that only this pub chain has decided to go down this route, most pubs leave it to the customer to decide !

Stayed for 3 nights in a family room at The Plaine across the road. Enjoyed 2 dinners and 3 breakfasts (included) at the dining room. Food was excellent and the level of hospitality is as advertised - wonderful. It is, of course, rustic but comfort level is very good. Nice rooms with decent amenities. Enjoyed drinks at the fleur de Lys, their pub across the road, on Friday night. Beautiful fireplaces. The George's beer garden and view to the old church is beautiful. Outdoor tables could be replaced, but view makes up for it.Would absolutely stay here again. A real adventure back in time that leaves you wanting more.

Absolutely lovely and emotional trip to a very favourite village and pub! Rooms at the Plaine are not as spacious as those in the George itself. However, staff are pleasant and welcoming.

We had a lovely lunch today with excellent service. The Italian lady that served us was charming & attentive ( sorry I didn’t get her name). She offered alternative parking as the on site was full, helped me in & we had drinks very quickly. The menu was interesting & varied & our meals arrived in moments. My chicken was succulent & beautifully presented & the fish & chips was a real plateful both we consumed quickly. The pudding menu was full of choices & the cheesecake from the specials menu delicious but my sticky toffee pudding was the show stopper!Thank you to the staff who’s friendly, nothing is too much trouble attitude was a breath of fresh air - drive past the packed farm shops & go to The George.

Fantastic attentive service from everyone. My starter of grilled brocoli salad was delish, really fresh with good flavours. Main of chimichurri chicken was cooked perfectly and again lots of lovely fresh flavours. Dessert was the strawberry and cream, was tasty but needed more crunch texture so a lot more of the pistachio shortbread rather than a few crumbs. Hubby had the ham hock terrine which he enjoyed but was a rather small portion, steak for main was perfectly cooked and tasted fantastic. Can't wait to try the roast on Sunday

We dined as a couple having been let down by some friends. The dining room has a medieval feel to it and the fact that it has only small windows would not suit everyone. It seemed a touch austere until we were joined by a larger group including a toddler which gave the room a bit more life. The food was good. We both had Sole which was superb, my only criticism would be that all it came with were some thin scraps of potato. They should include either chips or veg as standard. We thought we were getting french fries and asked the waitress to get us some chips when we saw what was actually on the plate. Luckily she came back with them almost immediately - I bet it's not the first time she's had to do that! Other than this the meal and service were terrific. Although it's definitely not cheap we will happily return but one star has to be docked for lack of menu clarity.

As a couple we drove down to Bath area from the North West to purchase a new car from a dealership there. After a four hour drive we were met with the warmest of welcomes. We phoned ahead as we were likely to miss the check in deadline. Nothing was too much trouble. Collected key at the bar and were escorted to our room. Charming 700+ year old establishment that I believe has appeared as a set location in a couple of films. Beautiful setting in a picturesque village. Staff and guests greeted our dog (Otto) with great enthusiasm - especially at breakfast....sausage and black pudding for him. Being pet friendly was the attraction for us. Cosy room, comfortable bed, fabulous shower - temperature and water pressure. Cannot fault this place. Will definitely stay here again on staycation next month.

This is an amazing place. Lots of lovely historic rooms. The staff are wonderful and helpful our table was perfectly situated as we had our 4 mouth old with us. The food is really good. We had the terrine and the risotto and sole. All absolutely lovely and the waitress ensured that there was no salad cream on one of the terrines, really good attention to detail. Good parking and easy to get to toilets with good baby changing facilities.

On arrival we were not welcomed or acknowledged. A table in the bar full of condiments/menus giving a sense of chaos; we were not dissppointed. When I asked which of the 3 ciders was driest the waitress unhelpfully didn't know! When we asked whether the chips were home made we were assured that they were but, on arrival, it was clear that they were bog standard cook-from-frozen. Some transparency would have been appreciated. To add insult to injury the portion size was minute and overpriced @ £3.95. Whilst eating we tried to catch the waitresses eye on several occasions for more drinks but totally failed, even an 'excuse me' didn't work probably because the manager appeared (walked straight past our table, didn't even look at us, smile or ask if all was OK). She then gave the two staff a pep talk on customer service (ironic?!) after she left one of the waitresses went to sweep the huge fireplace which we didn't appreciate whilst eating! We gave up on a second round of drinks and asked for the bill. It only showed our food. I had to go and find a member of staff to point this out. Instead of an apology or thank you, was told 'I can't deal with that, I'll need to get my colleague'. When finally correct the waitress wandered off; another wait to pay. It was far from busy what service is like when full I hate to think. The building is amazing but badly let down by poor customer service, horrible piped music and lack of atmosphere. Butcombe really need to sort out the service.

We stayed in the accommodation as a family of 3. The customer service was fantastic, nothing was too much trouble. Only minor let downs with a half drank bottle of water in the room and some tired areas of the bathroom but otherwise great.Unfortunately the same couldn’t be said for the food. None of us were able to finish our meals as the amount of oil on the food was terrible and the mash was incredibly buttery and greesy. The pie had just dry meat inside without any sauce inside at all. 4* accommodation, 2/3* food

Stopped here by chance at lunch time and was fortunate to get a table in garden. Fascinating building with a cobbled courtyard. Had a very good pint of Butcombes Beer. I had the Steak Pie for lunch which was really very good. My wife enjoyed her Three Cheese Toasted sandwich although she said it could have had more cheese in it. The staff were doing a good job keeping up with the customers. We will make a point of stopping next time we are passing through.

We ate here for 2 successive nights, and we really enjoyed the experience. Based on food alone I would have given 3 stars - the basics of burger, pie and fish & chips are OK but my wife tried the chicken and this was very greasy. Many of the wines on the list aren't available, but we had a couple of nice bottles regardless. The building is fantastic - you can feel 700 years of history oozing from every pore, but without being pretentious. The garden setting overlooking the church and green is lovely, and the local beers were very pleasant. Everyone was very friendly, both staff and regular customers.

I booked the Carthusian room for myself, wife and daughter. The whole settings of the place as a superb museum vibe going on but in a good way. The room as a four poster bed and we used the sofa bed in the room. The staff were so attentive and helped book a table for the evening. The food was the best part, reasonably priced and obviously fresh. The shared Camembert starter is enough for 4 people and the pie of the day is now a favourite.Breakfast which was included in the rate was again fresh and lovely local ingredients. There was a card machine issue which made me late for my appointment but that was just bad luck and in no way detracted from the overall stay.

Staying in the village, looking for a nice place to eat. Booked the George. All set up with great covid safe precautions. Sadly that did mean we couldn't wander about this Tudor gem, but we were able to eat in a very atmospheric part of this great property beside a massive fireplace (which was very welcome on a cold night). Our food was very good and the staff were friendly (the beer was yummy too). Very nice evening.
