We booked to have a carvery for our annual meet up with friends. Previously we had a very good carvery so we recommended the George. On the night, a Wednesday we arrived to find the restaurant full and bubbly with Christmas music and a warm, festive feel. We ordered drinks and they duly arrived at which point we ordered our carveries. The waiter brought us a ticket to hand in at the carvery and told us they would call us when ready. 30 minutes later they still hadn't called us so we asked when we could get our food to which the response was "Oh anytime you're ready". We made our way to the carvery and received our food by which time the entire restaurant had emptied, leaving us the only diners. There was a lack of food, they had seemingly run out of Yorkshire puddings (2 between 4 of us!) and the remaining vegetables looked watery and mushy. They had run out of apple sauce and no horseradish. We had to wait nearly 10 minutes for them to bring some out. Back at our table, they had turned the music off, staff had started cleaning the tables around us with spray, so close that in one instance causing my wife to cough and ask them not to do it. The food: The Yorkshire puddings, those who had one were cold, as were the roast potatoes. The vegetables were just tasteless mush but the worst thing was the beef. hard, chewy, gristle. Mine was mostly fat and dry meat, tough and tasteless. We complained to the waiter who said he would "tell the kitchen". We never heard back and in the end, left the food. We weren't offered puddings, coffees, or to have our drinks refreshed and so we left the empty, silent and morgue-like restaurant embarrassed. I complained at the till and was told "speak to the manager" when I asked to speak to the manager I was told "She's not here". I refused to pay the full amount for what was a truly disgusting meal and we received a discount on the food. In retrospect I should have refused to pay for the entire meal until we had heard from the manager. We have tried unsuccessfully to contact the manager hence my post here.

Izzy our waitress was pleasant, polite and very helpful.The food was excellent and we would reccomend to our friends.

We booked a large party of 15, had a pleasant evening with good friends food was okay nothing outstanding we all had carvery, food temperature was on the cold side personally I like my food piping hot, due to being a large party we ordered and paid for drinks at the bar during the evening, very disappointed at the end of the evening to find their was a shortfall once everyone had settled for food and deserts at this point we were told the special £25 carvery offer was for the first six couples only, fair enough but would have been good for the staff to advise before we had all settled our outstanding bill, to spread the cost between us made it very awkward at the end of the evening Would I recommend this venue probably not, we were asked to settle up and leave at 21.30pm as they were closing.

My partner and I were here tonight. We celebrated our engagement with a Carvery. I ate the best carvary here. Nowhere else has food been so tasty and fresh. Thank you to all your employees for this culinary experience.

Great place. Very accommodating for large parties with different requirements. Food is lovely and the service is the best in the area, the staff are always happy to help and extremely polite which goes a long way these days. Reasonably priced is an added bonus. The best pub restaurant within 10 miles radius to Chippenham!

Greeted by very friendly staff, who fussed over our dogs. Tip-top carvery, mother in-law's fish and chips was crunchy and light. Chocolate cake nicely chocolatey. Will definitely be back.

This is undoubtedly our favourite pub for a midweek meal - the carvery is brilliant value and very tasty, a good selection of puddings and the staff are very friendly, helpful and attentive. Looking forward to our next visit.

Definitely our favourite pub for a midweek meal. Always been greeted by the friendly staff and they always manage to get us a table. The carvery is brilliant value - and is a great option (especially as it’s available on weekdays). There’s a good selection of puddings. Everything is clean and tidy and no sticky tables - all at a reasonable price. I always look forward to our next visit, and this is our ‘go to’ pub when we have friends and family over.

I am sorry to say I didn't take any photos of my food.... it had all gone by the time I thought about a review...... whilst working in the area we found this pub on an off chance and came back for 3 nights running. The the carvery was quite simply... perfect. A nice selection of proper home cooked food. Nothing sat around for hours, the meats were fantastic, with the beef you got a choice of well done or pink. The veg was hot and cooked perfectly. Can't find anything negative to say! The girls on the bar / waiting were great. Drinks are fairly priced. It certainly isn't gourmet.. but if you want a very nice meal at a nice pub, here is your choice. Easy parking too. I will be back!

Went for a family meal today and although the carvery was as good as always the service left a lot to be desired. One particular member of staff seemed unable to crack a smile or indeed place food and drinks in front of the people they were meant for. The person who appeared to be in charge was brusque and efficient but not particularly friendly or welcoming. The chairs need attention here as well they aren’t high enough for the table and need replacing. That said the food was very tasty but with patchy service it’s unlikely we will return any time soon.

Being local we always see the car park busy so thought we would give it a go! Earliest available table was 2pm and when we arrived it was pretty quiet - think it must have been table change over time which instantly felt like a conveyor belt! Asked if we had a reservation - no hello or smile and as we were being shown to our table the waitress stopped at another table and asked the 2 ladies sat there to leave! The sign on their table said they had it reserved until 2:30 and it wasn’t not quite 2! Not sure where to start with how inappropriate this was firstly that she was showing us to a table and accosted these poor women on the way or the way she told them to leave! Food was mediocre at best, meat so dry and beef tough, potatoes not crispy, 1 gravy option to cover 3 different meats. Veg was a nice selection. Puddings were mixed, brownie and sticky toffee nice, spotted dick ok but all bought in, I had the homemade cheesecake which was a gelatine set mousse on a biscuit base. They need to improve the atmosphere and quality of food and it would be a great place but as it is I would not return. The 3 young waiting staff were all very nice and professional!

8 adults and one child went for a carvery on Friday 26th July. We were very happy. The staff were lovely and so was the food. Shall definitely return

A lovely place been passed this inn many times. So we stop for food last night and they had a lovely menu and a nice carvery. We pick off the menu and the food was excellent.. The atmosphere was lovely nice to talk with another table very friendly. We will be back. Staff was very good and service was excellent

Been passed the George Inn many times decided to stop for some food . Had a friendly welcome, show to a table by staff. Ordered drinks then Food, The service was very good nothing was to much trouble. I would recomend the Creamy Garlic Mushroom Served on Toasted Ciabatta The Cavery looked very nice We will be returning to the George Inn very soon to try the Carvery

Last minute Sunday roast carvery booking. They squeezed us in at 4pm, and there were still a considerable number of other customers there when we arrived. The staff were really friendly and welcoming, and the foot was delicious! They cooked me a vegan nut roast to order and called us up to the carvery when it was ready. I couldn’t eat a few of the options creamed leeks, cauliflower cheese, chipolata and Yorkers, but there was more than enough of the other options to make up for it. My partner had mixed meats, turkey, beef and gammon and said his meal was fantastic. They had vegan chocolate cake and ice cream for dessert. He had non-vegan sticky toffee pudding

Cracking little pub in a very pretty village. We all opted for the carvery and it was delicious. The weather was so warm we even managed to eat outside in the pub garden. Good parking. Wish this was my local!

Good value carvery but had several awkward service moments. We booked a table for 6 and we're taken to a table of 4, with the wrong reservation name on it and had to stock up on extra cutlery by the carvery, wine list was not provided until specifically asked for too.

I have always driven past the George Inn on my way home from work and never really thought about going in. It was my partners birthday and we were looking for something new so decided to give it a try. I'm so glad we did! Such good food and lovely place! We had the carvery and it had such great options! A friend had the burger and it looked so tasty! Very pleased we decided to give it a try and will be looking forward to going back.

Had a roast beef ciabatta with horseradish and a pint, beef was perfectly pink and really thick. Would recommend it 😁

We popped in for a quick pub lunch - what an amazing treat The George was! The staff were absolutely fabulous and very welcoming. The choice of food was great and the quality was excellent. In the end our quick lunch turned in to a full on carvery roast - it was fantastic. I really recommend the George to anyone but I would be surprised if you need to book!

We had a delicious carvery here on a Saturday evening! Two carveries for 25 pounds-very good value! Pleasant staff as well. We will come again!

Nice meal although the portions of meat were less than generous, service was slow but the food was good quality

A torturous journey to reach The George as a road closure demanded a 5 mile detour. Inside we had to wait to be seated as the two hosts were very busy, but once we got sat down and ordered, our drinks arrived quickly. The carvery chef was jolly and served 3 good sized slices of meat. This, coupled with 6 types of veg and roasties, provided a tasty mid-week roast dinner at a reasonable price. Worth a visit if you’re in the area.

We rang last minute the other Sunday and were able to get the last table for the final sitting at 4.30pm.. We were a bit sceptical whether there would be enough food with it being the end of the day, but we were pleasantly surprised.. Wow..amazing carvery! There was plenty of choice with the vegetables and a new beef joint was brought out, so there was enough meat as well.. The food is 5 stars and highly recommended - we will definitely be returning.

Went in for a takeout carvery, staff were nice, very helpful. Roast was good - takeout was a little cold but that’s to be expected . Would go again

A lovely location for a Sunday carvery.

It’s okay for a £17 roast dinner, not amazing the veg was good but spuds were average /have been sat around for time. If you like your meat best to check first what is on offer as when we went, there was no chicken or pork. On a positive note, the staff are excellent.

Oh dear, what has happened to this gorgeous pub? Covid can no longer be blamed for what was once a friendly, welcoming pub, brimming with atmosphere becoming a dull and dreary place it is today, I was so disappointed. The food is great, the regular chef is charming and friendly. Even with a reservation the bar was unattended, no welcome whatsoever. Eventually shown to our seats and a drinks order taken, simple enough task … choice of wines offered, decision made and immediately get told they don’t serve it in this pub, it’s served in the other pub they work at! The dining area is ruined by scruffy, peeling, leather effect chairs, this is such a shame because looking around some chairs are beautifully upholstered. Sooooo disappointed by what was once a family favourite eatery.

What a find! This is an exceptional establishment. The staff are friendly and greet customers warmly. The carvery is beautifully cooked hearty and extremely well priced. Congratulations to the management and staff for making our visit such a pleasurable experience. Other hostelries in the area, Lacock, in particular should visit to see how food and service are prepared and served.

Another beautiful carvery at a reasonable price. All was wonderful from service to the good old roast.

What an excellent Pub and Restaurant, the carvery was home cooked and very good and the desserts were fantastic - the crumble was enough to feed two. Excellent meal highly recommended

Lovely place the carvery is excellent! Only thing that I would recommend. Is when cueing for carvery that the ticket given should have a number! So that they call a table at a time instead of a great cue of people standing over you while you eat. And people trying to pass the cue with dinner in hand.

Always good food here. I ate with my grand daughter on a Sunday so we had a carvery which was great. Parking is available free but the car park is only small and there's a main busy road but no on road parking. I advise to get in early .

Fantastic pub,the carvery was amazing,so many different vegetables. Plus you could have a piece of all the meats if wanted. The staff went over the top with service to us on a very busy day and they were all very friendly. We would definitely recommend to our friends and will be back ourselves very soon.

Cold Beef, Cold Yorkshire, Under cooked cold potatoes, Bullet Peas, Cold gravy and they had forgotten to put the cheese in the cauliflower cheese. Ignore the sign outside that says 2 for £25, it is £17 each. Won't be going again.

Had a Sibling and spouses meet up... We were coming from Hertfordshire and was a bit later than hoped but wasn't a problem. A good choice on menu with carvery as well... Staff friendly...had a slight problem but it was sorted quickly and without fuss and taken off the Bill.

Another fabulous lunchtime carvery meal. My friends family and I really enjoy going here, sadly only on an occasional basis, like a few times a month. We are blessed with other splendid places to eat locally, but this is one our favourites. The atmosphere is just right, not to busy to be crowded like other popular places. Produce is sourced locally and served by the convivial chef. Staff are ultra friendly, check you are pleased with the food and always on hand to serve. Well done to all who serve, happy diners.

Superb car very -m Sunday lunch midweek! A choice of 4 meats with all the trimmings and at least 6 veggies 😄 Delicious and huge portions. No going back for more either, if you had room! Good , varied menu also offered. The cheesecake was yummy, although the sticky toffee pud was great too. Great service. Friendly, helpful staff. Attractive, clean pub. We’ll set up for the disabled. Large car park. We will return!

We were a party of 10 on the 23rd September, couldn’t fault anything, excellent staff excellent food excellent service, very clean premises, we had children in the party which were catered for extremely well, will definitely be going again, a great place to dine

We booked for a Sunday lunch today with friends who live locally. The staff couldn’t have done enough, the food was delicious. The carvery had a great selection of meats and vegetables and all the trimmings too. We couldn’t resist the syrup sponge and crumble for dessert! The menu was great and you are spoilt for choice. We will definitely be back and would highly recommend a visit. You will not be disappointed .

We were restricted to the front bar as we had a small dog with us. Nevertheless teh quality of lunch was excellent.I would go again,without the pet to sample the carvery they had on offer in the back = looked good, and this was on a Friday lunch! If we lived locally I would def go back. The roast beef ciabata obviously carved from the joint, generous, tasty, and not unreasonable with chips and salad. Bonus if you like 6X then thats a bonus!

Came late on Sunday, even though it was end of day, service and food was top notch! Great meat & amazing sides! I had the beef and friends had the pork, all was really delicious. The califlower cheese was particularly awesome! 10/10 would reccomend and definitely going to come again! Looking forward to the homemade fruit crumble when I’m next in.

Visited the George at Sandy Lane for Sunday lunch as it’s always been a great place to go (see my other review). Today the food from the carvery was excellent and the desserts were lovely. Unfortunately it was let down by our waitress. Annoyingly we didn’t get her name, there were others working who were full of energy and enthusiasm. Ours on the other hand was flat, uninterested and a tad rude. She didn’t make much eye contact, huffed and puffed when asking for drinks, menu choices (god forbid I didn’t have carvery like the rest so she had to write something down) and just made us feel like an inconvenience. It started badly as I fancied a cider and asked if the pub still did Thatchers, rather than saying no and offering another choice I just got a shake of the head. Don’t like leaving negative reviews and it might be she was having an off day or had something on her mind to distract her but if not unfortunately guys she really let you down!!

Excellent carvery. We had the pork & turkey. Vegetable choices were very good & the Yorkshire Puddings 10 / 10. The gravy was rich and couldn't be faulted. Our only criticism being the roast potatoes. These were too big, too hard & not brown enough. The staff were well presented, friendly and helpful.

Nice location for this village pub, just on the outside skirts of Devises. First visit with friends for Sunday lunch. All three of us decided on the carvery in the spirit of adventure and what excellent choice, especially the beef providing a choice of ' rare or well done '. Very friendly staff and good value & service. See you again, when next in this lovely part of Wiltshire.

This was our first visit Called here as read about it at sister pub the Greyhound nearby in Bromham My wife had the Steak & Ale Pie, very good with plenty of meat content Only disappointment was the veg, peas ! Why not offer a selection of veg from your carvery which was not being used ! I had to have the fish & chips so as to compare with other pub Although very nice I have to say The Greyhound wins hands down !

We booked for Wednesdsy evening carvery, there were two other tables of four there so good atmosphere. The server was really friendly snd the food was excellent! Definitely going again.

Visited The George Inn for the first time today, for a small family meal for 3 of us. We've been searching for a decent carvery for a while now, and we've definitely found our new favourite. The carvery was well stocked and clean, with a very good choice of meats and vegetables. The food was immense, full of flavour and really delicious. I would happily eat a carvery here every single day if I could. A good choice of puddings as well, if you have room afterwards. The pub is very pretty and the staff are friendly and welcoming. I would highly recommend The George Inn for a decent carvery.

Was looking for somewhere to have Easter Sunday lunch while visiting my daughter in Bath, everywhere we tried was full but managed to get a place here! Was more than worth it, lovely country pub, great food and the apple and mixed berry crumble was to die for! Will definately visit again when up that way

Simply the best carvery I have ever had, meats were very tasty and the choice and quality of vegetables were both superb. Service was friendly and efficient, and portion size was decent. The price was £12.95. Highly recommended.

The best carvery we have ever had and we’ve had a few!! Crackling was lovely and the meat tender and succulent. They squeezed us in for an hour at short notice. Very obliging.

Simply the best Sunday roast carvery we've had at any restaurant. Extensive choice of vegetables, everything was cooked to perfection, even offered a choice of 'well done' or 'rare' roast beef (first time ever of having a choice) . All 3 of us had a...

Lovely position and it was very cosy inside. However good was average at best. I opted for carvery but there was only I joint left and it was fatty. My friend all left part of their meals for different reasons, all edible but not delicious....

We visited yesterday for impromptu lunch 2 carvery’s for £20!, what a great deal, delicious food and lovely staff. The pub is lovely with a traditional feel. Not our first visit and certainly not our last.

We had a family catch up lunch for 10 incorporating two people with eating difficulties which were accommodated with care and attention. The food was excellent and service friendly and efficient, nothing was too much trouble, we wouldn’t hesitate to return.
