We called in for lunch a few days ago and it was excellent in every way. The welcome was very warm and genuine, great service, the beer was excellent, and the fish and chips were superb. It's easy to say "best I have ever had" but I cannot imagine how they could have been better - next time we go, I will not need to see the menu, I know what I'll be having. Just enough perfectly cooked chips without the usual overload. My Mrs had a prawn sandwich which was also excellent. 10/10

We all visited the George Inn and were welcomed with a happy host! I'm glad we booked as it was extremely busy, which indicated it was going to be a good place to visit. We were not wrong, the food is cooked to order, so from ordering (we all ordered cooked food) to the food arriving there was a bit of a wait, but we were happy to wait. Let me tell you, it was well worth it! Excellent local pub!

I had taken my husband to The George Inn for a meal for his birthday. The meal and service was excellent. I did ask the owner Ed for our bill which he did bring over to me which was £56 and he did confirm there was no service charge. I did give him £60 in cash and his word were " are you giving the change to the staff " I was utterly shocked and disgusted by this the utter cheek of asking this. I don't mind giving a tip but when asked this it did make me feel very uncomfortable. It was confirmed to us later that there is only him and his wife.

What a great discovery in this lovely area. Called in for a pint and were made most welcome by Ed who spent time with us in between serving others. Beer well kept, so couldn’t just have one… Lovely atmosphere and a place to most definitely come back to on our next visit to Wharfedale. Thanks also to Scott on the late shift who was equally friendly.

Wow! What a magical place! A fantastic host, wonderful food, great beers and wines and a great cosy setting in a beautiful spot. My wife and I and our dog booked in for a Saturday night over the Bank Holiday weekend- so glad we did. It was busy and our meals were exceptional. We enjoyed talking to other diners and drinkers in the bar area - it’s just that sort of place. We were taken aback by Ed’s hospitality (he has an uncanny knack of remembering everyone’s names) and the wonderful food, we booked in again for the Monday night and had the pies - terrific. We will most definitely be back next time we are in the area.

We stayed and ate here on our Dales Way walk. We received a very warm welcome from the landlord, had a quick post walk beer and were shown to our cosy room in a building separate from the main building. It was clean, spacious and well appointed. The pub is an absolute historical gem. So cosy and welcoming. It also keeps the historic tradition of burning a candle on the bar when it's open, a tradition that goes back to when it was a vicarage. Food was amazing. We had Homemade homity pie, with proper vegetables, a rarity in pubs today. Breakfast was delicious too. This place is a gem with perfect hospitality by people who very clearly enjoy the company of other people. We would highly recommend the George for both food and a stay.

Decision to be made - carry on our walk to Yockenthwaite or cut short and find The George Inn for a drink and/or lunch! Choice made with all in favour of The George Inn, we were warmly greeted by Ed. Great menu. We all went for the sandwich option but the plates of hot food arriving at other tables looked very tempting. Local drink options on tap too. Definitely the perfect decision to stop. As temperatures were falling outside and the fire was so relaxing, it took great effort to drag ourselves away to complete the walk. Brilliant place and thank you Ed for making us so welcome.

Booked ahead and went for the pie night on a Monday. A lovely warm fire, friendly staff, and a traditional pub atmosphere greeted us. The pies , food and beer were all excellent. My wife is gluten intolerant and so had ordered ahead for a GF pie which she said was amazing. I had the beef and ale. Both were packed with lean meat and cased in lovely light pastry. I have been to the George numerous times since my first visit in 1988 and it is was definitely the best visit in 2022. Great to see a traditional pub thriving and doing well.

We were always welcomed very warmly and on a first name basis each time by Ed, the landlord. We had Sunday roast and returned on the Monday evening for "Pie Night". Sarah, the chef, does an amazing job as all the food was of excellent quality and good portions. Great choice of real ales, lager and cider. He took the time to remember all our names and was very attentive. We arrived on a Monday which was pie night and what fantastic pies they were! Highly recommended. I would tend to agree with one of the other reviewers on here in that our room in the annexe whilst very clean and comfortable, was a little dark and opened almost directly on to the road. Came across this pub as I walked the dales - asked for a cup of tea and was advised it would take 30 minutes for the water to boil - then we were told not to sit on / wet the chairs and finally if we had ordered outside we could have saved 80p on our drinks - where was the Yorkshire hospitality? This is a lovely characterful pub with bags of atmosphere and great company, a nice range of ales and good food. We decided to book a room this time but unfortunately it was a bit disappointing. Compared to the other rooms in the Inn which look fabulous on the website this one was a bit basic and lacking in the 'wow' factor that the other rooms clearly have. It was clean and comfortable and quiet being in the annexe which is probably a good idea if you don't like pub noise but being on the ground floor and looking straight out onto the road it did feel a bit public. I think rather than charging a flat rate for all the rooms the pricing should reflect the niceness of the room. Next time we will either try and specify the room as it says you can do this on the website or just come here for food and drink which is certainly a memorable experience. The hosts are very friendly and what with Ed's sense of humour and the adorable little Jack Russel, George , it's certainly worth returning to.

My Mum and I traced our family tree to the George Inn at Hubberholme. The Pawson's ran the Inn (and also farm at the time) for over 100 years from 1814 to 1920. Joseph Pawson from 1814, his son Henry took over and ran the Inn until he was 79. His daughter Grace Pawson took over the Inn and was landlady until she was 70 (in 1920). A picture of her still proudly hangs on the wall. It's a lovely traditional Dale's Inn and fortunately hasn't changed a lot over the years so it still has all its original character. I would recommend a stay at the Inn and the food is delicious - especially the pies! If you like walking in the Dales - this is the place to stay. The location is stunning!

We booked a table for 3 in anticipation of trying their "award winning pies". What a massive disappointment! The selection of pies on offer was limited to Chicken and mushroom or Chicken and chorizo. The filling of the pies were very dry and tasteless and the inside of the crust was uncooked and still a dough, I couldn't eat it raw! ! My husband's and daughter's pies were slightly more cooked. When the plates were picked up I pointed out to the landlord that I'd left the whole crust because it was raw and he checked it, it was obvious! He didn't apologise! He then told us about the desserts (no menus for this) and we paid £7 per some very ordinary desserts! How can they possibly justify charging £13.99 for a small doughy pie? They could have done the decent thing if they were honest and taken the price of my pie off the bill but they still charged me. The landlady was not friendly and I've noticed she only replies to bad reviews! She needn't bother or find excuses with this one. I'm telling the truth and that was what I experienced! Don't waste your money at The George, there are some excellent pubs nearby. Go to The White Lion! The food is superb and cheaper and the staff is brilliant! I would not recommend The George to anyone unless you want to throw your money away and end up leaving disappointed!

Owners do a good job, are extremely friendly, and make a point of asking their customers' names and calling them by name. Nice touch. Reading some of the negative reviews, it seems this place is a victim of its own success: it's small, it gets crowded, and I get the impression they don't like to turn people away. That meant we got to eat there at short notice. The place was full, with a good atmosphere. I'd definitely go back, if in the area.

I really need to write a review on the excellent Sunday lunch , me and the other half had at The George. Sat out in the sun on a marvellous afternoon in The Dales. We walked the four miles from our holiday cottage ( which isn't far but it's far for me ) and were rewarded with a large pint of the very strong Urdinger beer. I chose the lamb cooked in hay and my husband had the braised beef. Both were gorgeous and the veggies and very large Yorkshire , including large helpings of the delicious cauliflower cheese. We also needed a glass of wine to accompany the excellent fayre . It won't be long before we return and the welcome is truly Yorkshire. Thank you.

Not to be missed. Probably the best pie I have tasted, together with an excellent pint of beer and friendly host makes this a five star treat!

Great pub, in a fabulous location. Lovely friendly landlord called Ed. Ideally placed for beautiful easy river walks. We wished we hadn't packed a lunch as the award winning pies smelt divine. Would be a super place to stay over as a natural break on a long walk.

Well. What a great place. Warm atmosphere. Yet again, another stay at the George. Didn't fail. Food great for the venue. Pies are excellent. A must try. Ed the landlord goes out of his way to be helpful. Knows all the customers and residents by first name. A very friendly place to stay over despite the horrendous midge invasion outside on a bad day. Just be prepared because it's well worth the visit.

I visited the George Inn three times during my stay at Buckden and was made to feel like an old friend from the moment I first arrived.Excellent, well kept, beers are the perfect accompaniment to meals that are first class - award winning pies with chips to match.Ed and Jackie work very hard to make the George Inn the huge success it undoubtedly is. The only problem is getting a table - make sure you book!

The menu was excellent and there were good vegetarian choices. The house red merlot and ale didn't disappoint.

Was here for dinner on Thursday night and we had an absolutely brilliant time! The pub is a beautiful old building oozing with character, down to George the Jack Russell who was asleep in his basket by the fire but keeping a watchful eye on things! The owners Ed and Jackie are a lovely couple and work very hard. We chatted to Ed for some time asking him about the pub and how they came about deciding to run it. We both ordered the Barnsley Chop which was very generous and very tasty. Desserts of sticky toffee pudding and rhubarb crumble with custard were also excellent. The Semer Water Pale Ale is highly recommended. All in all, a great evening, made even greater by the wonderful hosts. Thank you and we look forward to returning next year!

I would love to give a review of this establishment, however that is not possible due to our being denied a table. Being a party of seven adults we felt it wise to book ahead so accordingly on Thursday we enquired about a table for Friday evening. We were told that yes, there was room for us but, as the tables were all meant for 2 or 4 it would require more tables and as we were an odd number that wouldn't work because nobody should have to share a table! So it appears that the inn does not need our business. I'm glad they are doing well and can afford to pick and choose their customers. We will take our money elsewhere.

My meal/snack was OK, nothing special and service was adequate but not particularly friendly, more distant than friendly. I have over many years stayed at or dined in the George, each time the owner was different than my last visit, and each one has stuck me as people living the country pub illusion, and hence a short stay. The candle is still on the bar during opening hours but without much meaning. All in all if hiking nearby and it is open, good for a beer or coffee and move on to greener pastures.

we stopped for a quick drink - roughly half way round a lovely walk from Buckden. Beer was great (Theakstons & Black Sheep) and a good choice on offer. Whilst we didn't have food, the menu was good with alot of lunch time choices and the pies looked awesome!

I have been to the George a few times over the years. Perhaps it is something in my blood, after all my Nan and Grandpa stayed here for their honeymoon back in 1933. I always wonder whether they had "caught" the trout, proudly displayed for time immemorial in two glass cases... perhaps not....This is a Yorkshire pub, irrespective of the Landlord, you always seem to get direct Yorkshire customer service. To the point. Suits me fine as I call a spade a spade. Why waffle and why waste time asking how you are...Busy as you would expect on a Saturday lunchtime 1300 with the sun shining. It seemed half the world had descended on the George and you have to remember it is very hard for a landlord to "staff" when you don't know if it will be plus 18C and sunny or trying to snow. So go expecting a bit of wait and you won't get upset.x 4 fish buttys were all enjoyed by our group, with good beer to wash it down with. Yes will always return, but would encourage everybody to go and support if in the area. Without custom, pubs like this will die. They need to survive. When you do go, look at the stuffed trout and raise a glass to Phil' and Joe.

I informed the pub in advance that I am Vegan and they ably accommodated my needs. Always a good idea to give advance notice as good places like the George will do something special.

We stopped for lunch whilst walking the Dales Way. We were welcomed by a very friendly barman and the food was fantastic - especially the pies. Mine was Beef & Beetroot - they've won awards for their pies and it is easy to see why.The dining area is small, which might explain why it is important to eat on Sunday lunchtimes, when I imagine it is very busy.We came on a Thursday lunchtime when the pub was still busy, but there was space for everyone.

We called in this pub in the middle of a walk last Sunday, AFTER ordering the landlord told us he would be "unable to let us sit inside if we were not eating" so we sat outside. There were plenty of tables and we would have been happy to move for diners. We felt this was totally unacceptable and I have never come across this before in any pub. We will boycott the Geoerge in future.

We had an absolutely delicious Sunday lunch here yesterday. We hadn't reserved a table and arrived at about 12:30 after finishing a walk in the area. As soon as we walked in we were made to feel very welcome by the landlady and had soon ordered our food and drinks and were chatting to the friendly landlord. There was a choice of pork, lamb or braised brisket which we both chose. There were other things on the menu too including fish if you're not a meat lover. We often eat out for Sunday lunch and this's was one of the tastiest we've had in a long time. If we're ever back in the area we will definitely call in again. Superb.

Whilst on our regular holiday in Upper Wharfedale we went for a birthday celebration meal at The George and sadly came away thinking it was not one to repeat, despite excellent food.We have been visiting The George for over three decades and have witnessed great and also dire times, depending upon who is at the helm. We (three adults) waited fifty minutes for our meal to arrive, despite there being in total under a dozen people in the pub and not all were eating. In the two hours overall that we were there, we felt - and this is merely a personal view - like we were being intensively targeted by the landlord to spend more whilst the landlady ignored us. It was really quite bizarre - fire and ice - and collectively an unexpectedly unpleasant atmosphere. The food was exquisite, but there are other good pubs in Upper Wharfedale where a relaxed and inclusive welcome is more certain.

If it's a proper country pub with amazing food, drink, accommodation and a great landlord and lady then this is the place to stay. I had the award-winning pie which was only one thing, award-winning!Will definitely be coming to stay again!

Gorgeous little cafe with super friendly staff. I ordered a GF toastie and the owner came to check whether it was an intolerance or an allergy, which I really appreciated! The food was absolutely delicious and my friend and I felt so comfortable. Highly recommend!

We've visited many times and chosen from the breakfast menu which has always been first class. However today I decided to choose a punjabi lunch special which was brown lentil Dahl yogurt, salad and freshly made chapati, oh my word it was first class. Well worth the 36 mile round trip. The owner & waitress are lovely, so friendly and helpful and seem very genuine that you enjoy your visit. Give it a try, you won't be disappointed

My first visit to this pub and what a change from many of Skiptons tourist orintated watering holes a true"local". Excellent choice of cask beers and some quickfire crac with the barman. I'll be in again.
