I would give The George five stars all round if it had not been for the chaotic service at breakfast! Staff looked miserable and manager rushed around shouting orders and achieved very little! Shame as it is a great place to stay in centre of Rye

Had a really enjoyable dinner here with exemplary service from Layla. The food was really tasty - chorizo starter and moules starter followed by seabass and the George cheeseburger. We really enjoyed our meal, Layla served us with smiles and professionalism, the ambience was good and we would definitely return. Thank you.

We were staying the night at The George and so booked a table for dinner and are glad we did. The level of attention and service from the bar to table was first class and delivered with politeness and a smile. Our food was all cooked and presented very well. We both had mussels to start (good size portion of plump, succulent mussels) with one lamb rump (large portion, cooked to perfection and pink) and one sea bass (very generous fillet, again cooked to perfection). For desert we had a dark chocolate mousse and a sticky toffee pudding which, as with the above, were first class. There are many places to eat in Rye but I am sure none will offer much better than The George.

Had the steak which was cooked well and tender. However, the chips were covered in salt, which took the flavour of the steak away and the salad had too strong a dressing poured over it. A very poor selection of three deserts.

We mentioned that it was our wedding anniversary on the reservation but sadly no acknowledgment. The waitress to be fair to her was only on her second day.. and she was very sweet and polite but lacked knowledge on many questions we had. Unfortunately our prawns were very over cooked as was our steak. It was a pleasant meal but not a ‘I can’t wait to return’ or something I’d recommend given the price tag.

Very nice menu with lots of choice for meat eaters but a little limited for veggie and vegan but some choices available. 2 of us dined 3 courses with a bottle of wine just under £150 so felt good value. Quality of food was top notch my Kent cheese with honey starter was gorgeous, hubby had generous started portion of mussels. Mains me the lamb cooked to perfection not a bit of fat with big cous cous and zingy sauce , gambas husband’s choice with chips (fat and tasty) cheese board and chocolate mousse to finish all excellent

MORE AT OpenTable

We enjoyed a wonderful dinner on the first evening of our stay at The George in Rye. My husband had chorizo with pesto to start and he said the pesto was a fantastic cooling accompaniment to the heat of the chorizo. I had a caesar salad with generous crispy pancetta and light-as-air croutons. For main course I ordered ribeye steak which came with excellent chips and he had lamb rump with couscous. It said lot that we both wished we ordered each other's mains - his couscous looked like risotto rather than a heap of grains and my ribeye had the tiniest marbling of fat. We shared a delicious side of hispi cabbage. To accompany my steak I'd asked for a glass of malbec but their running out turned out to be a blessing in disguise as our lovely waiter suggested a glass of primovito instead, which was as full of flavour as malbec but had less body and when I looked it up, turned out to be a zinfandel grape variety and I would definitely have it again. We were too full for a big pudding but he had a very good vanilla ice cream and I had a scoop each of raspberry and mango sorbet. For the standard of cooking, 3 courses, a drink and service came in at just over £50 each, and was excellent value.

Lovely place. Waitress was very friendly polite and helpful. Food overall was very good. Although my belly pork was 2 thirds fat, if I were the chef I wouldn’t have served that piece. Despite that the actual meat and the rest of the plate wears delicious. Nobody asked us if we wanted pudding, which didn’t matter because we didn’t but overall a lovely meal and a nice setting. Would return but if the pork was the same again I would send it back.

I have been to the George a few times before and it's been great, however this time it was disappointing . Mediocre food, poor service, very noisy. Very uncomfortable table, one of the waiters kept knocking me with his tablet and kicked the chair as he passed - very annoying. I mentioned this to a waitress who inferred that was the way it was and could do nothing about. It was up my guests to squeeze up to allow the waiter to pass. The vegetarian option had three small bits of Butternut squash and the Irish coffee was poor quality. The men's toilet was filthy - I will think very carefully before I book again after all there are many places in Rye.

Somewhat noisier and more crowded than I might have hoped, but it was a Saturday on a bank holiday weekend, so I suppose it was to be expected. The food was excellent and the service very professional although there was a bit of a mix up over one of the sauces. It was very pricey, but no more so than other very good restaurants and because it was a special occasion, that was okay. The menu was not extensive but had sufficient choice to keep anyone happy. Steaks were cooked as requested. I would recommend, but more suitable for 'lively' than 'quiet' dining.

Food exceptional and could not fault. No welcome upon arriving at restaurant with no clear signage as to where to book in for our table. Felt service didn't match the food. Would have expected to feel more welcome rather than just another customer and our main server never checked with us during our meal that everything was ok. No real effort was made to engage with us. Had friendlier welcome in less expensive restaurants. Nothing specific, just personal preference and it wouldn't stop us going back as the food was excellent.

We had dinner at the George in Rye on 23rd April. The service was very good, we were quite late for our table, had let them know and it wasn’t a problem at all. I had onion soup with crostini and salt and pepper squid, both were ok but not outstanding. The sourdough bread with seaweed butter was delicious. My friend had fish and chips and pronounced the fish absolutely first class. Really fresh, local, in deliciously light batter. Ambience is a bit too bistroesque to be romantic, some darker corners with candles would really add to the feel. The restaurant was empty that evening, but it can be very loud when full, between say Thursdays and Mondays.
