The George Hotel in Ashford

We were staying at the hotel.. and decided to give the restaurant a go..

Great food, lovely staff, wonderful atmosphere. Will be returning very soon!

Flattered to deceive, lovely venue, service ok, but food wasn't great at all. All things seemed to be too salty, especially the Chips that were too salty to eat, duck breast needed to be on a bed of mash or something other than sprinkled with a dozen mushrooms. Told that the locals don't eat here and can see why.

Beautiful setting & the lighting & dining area is warm comfortable & cosy. The staff were very attentive & engaging & we felt very welcomed. My only slight negative is that the menu is very limited, albeit the food was delicious.

Excellent on all fronts. The food, service was everything we had hoped for, celebrating our Ruby wedding anniversary

The George Hotel is a nice, historic and comfortable venue to eat in the middle of the wonderful, picturesque and charming town of Rye. Good food, interesting menu, good choice of cocktails and wine, beer and spirits. Nice ambience. Pleasant staff.

Disappointing evening on the whole. The servers were noisy and too interested in their own fun and conversations. There were children running up and down the banquets and the food was tasty but hardly filling. Perhaps I'd expected too much from this establishment?

We received a warm welcome from the waiter. However, the food was average at best. I ordered a rib eye steak medium and it was charred round the edges and not a good cut. Chops were good. The staff were pleasant when they were around but they were not around much. My husband had to find a member of staff to ask for our bill. Would not return or recommend.

Saturday night is inevitably a busy time and this was no exception. We felt a little shoe horned in. The food was excellent though the prices were slightly higher than top restaurants in London. The staff are all very personable and efficient but we had trouble attracting anyone's attention in order to order the main course, to see the dessert menu, and then to pay.

Wonderful meal. Roasted aubergine cooked to perfection and the sauce was divine. Hubby's cod loin was a winner too. Thought the wine list was expensive so opted for a carafe of Viognier instead. It was one of the loveliest wines I’ve tasted. Service was friendly and faultless too.

Pleasant meal at the Grill as restaurant not open ( Monday) Fairly limited choice, but both choices were very good Trad fish& chips- large portion but light batter. Guinea fowl delicious and interestingly presented as breast with one leg sticking out- good tasty gaze, mushrooms and surprisingly good contrast with celeriac purée. Pineapple desert with passion fruit sorbet was nice & fruity.ice creams also good.

lovely hotel full of character and nice atmosphere. Food was ok for the price point but the service was terrible. The staff were all lovely but just lacked the level of training and expectations for environment. Had to find someone to order a drink and then again to order our food after being sat down for almost an hour. Lots of other little things that might happen in a cafe but not suitable for a restaurant, but really nothing that couldn’t be sorted with a good staff training day (please invest in your staff it will make all the difference).

Everything was great. Food was delicious. Dogs were welcome. Atmosphere was cosy. Preferred the snug over the main restaurant - it was just so cosy! Would highly recommend.

A birthday meal for my wife on New Years Eve. Food and service excellent, friendly and good fun. Really well cooked food and some tasty local drinks 👍🏻

Lovely food as always but it would be better at New Year’s Eve to not have small children in the restaurant.

Excellent Sunday lunch in very central Rye. Not cheap but value.

After such a good experience last Christmas . We decided to book a meal again this year. What a disappointment. Not a great choice on menu, so decided to just go with fish and chips and a burger.There was no great choice of stater or main course . Burger was dry and fish and chips was too over cooked.

Really cold with draft from front door when visited with 85 year old! Asked for internal doors to be closed but told this could not be done. We were disappointed as expecting warm atmosphere and surroundings with fires lit but cold and disappointing

Disappointing trip to The George. The service was very slow and rather odd. At one point the waiter gave my husband two forks and no other cutlery! The food took far too long to come. Two of our party had to rush their food because they had to leave for a train and if he taken a hour for the main course to arrive. Also very limited veggie options. Basically one main course which is no choice at all. Given how many veggies are around now I feel there should be more choice.

Starters and mains superb. Our waiter Rumain went above and beyond to make my husbands birthday special even singing happy birthday in Spanish to him. My daughter in law actually said it’s the best meal out she has ever had it was the clams in sofite rice ( very like paella). Thoroughly recommend.

Great service from the staff. Food was tasty but the portion size and value for money had a lot to be desired.

Excellent place, lovely food, great staff, brilliant that it's dog friendly. Visit Rye a couple of times a year and always have a meal at the George.

Cheap beer, standard Craft Union. Either love it or hate it. Does what it says on the tin 👍

Service from Dan was wonderful but the food was frankly terrible. Either over salted or lacking flavour… such a disappointment especially as it was a birthday meal

Dreadful. Booked months ago for 6 and no tables free when we arrived so they put us in a dark annexed corner away from everyone else. Left us for 20 minutes before offering drinks. Poor menu with very limited and strange choices. We left after 30 minutes and went elsewhere never to return…

Consistently great place for any occasion, did not disappoint this time either. Menu was as creative as ever, staff were great, friendly and knowledgeable and gave some good wine recommendations. Great to see even more local wine on the list too.

There was a very warm welcome from the staff. The food was delicious and the coffee was great too. The atmosphere was cosy. I loved it ,I shall definitely go there again when I visit Rye.

What a lovely evening. Friendly service with excellent food. The decor is lovely with a relaxed feel. We were impressed with the layout and the fact there was a good buzz to the room without it being noisy.

We had a bad experience at The George after the pandemic. So thought we would try again as we live locally. This time was fantastic with great food and service and it is so beautifully decorated. Our lovely Spanish waiter made us feel very spoilt, especially as this was our Ruby Anniversary. We will be back.

The guinea fowl was outstanding, would highly recommend and my friend had the fried chicken which she said was the best ever.

A very underwhelming experience, the steak was overcooked, the fish was a 2” square on a spoonful of cold sauce. We weren’t advised to order sides which would have made more of a meal and we weren’t offered drinks either. The steak was served with nothing else on the plate, just a slab of meat without garnish or flourish. This is our 3rd disappointing visit to the George and our last. They seriously need to up their game as there are plenty of good restaurants locally.

The food was cooked to a very high standard and the young waiter we had was pleasant. However, upon arrival we were treated a bit like plebs and ushered to the end room which looked like it was reserved for parties and big groups. Therefore the experience didn’t reflect the reputation of the restaurant, price point or our expectations. While we decided we could get on with this, the neighbouring table of alpha tories asked to move, reaffirming this feeling. We were asked if we were ready to order before we had even seen the drinks menu and it felt like we were being rushed through, to which we decided was for the best, ate and left. This was a shame because I have a lot of money and was looking forward to spending it.

Management need to take a look at the customer experience rather than jam customers onto tables and seating areas that are over crowded. We sat in the area outside the main restaurant to celebrate a birthday and it felt like we had been shoe horned into space, even though I had booked weeks in advance - not a pleasant dining experience when your table is wedged next to others. Stop employing waiters that have had no service training, having to ask for the basics (like a drink) is poor. Food was over priced and trying too hard. To the management, take a look at the product you are offering your customers - overall it’s poor.

All of our dishes were cooked to perfection. The quality of the sirloin was incredible, would highly recommend.

Fabulous atmosphere it was my boyfriend birthday but I found that the waiters didn’t make a fuss unfortunately as they did with other guests who had there birthdays sadly. The dessert I had was not nice I got it changed and was still charged on the bill I was not impressed. Overall the main and starter was great service good have been better

what can i say, i eat here many times, and have never ever been disappointed . Wonderful ambience , superb friendly staff..nothing is too much trouble . The is consistantly well cooked and pressented every time i go there. Its always superbly clean,and wipped after every customer. I absolutely love it, and they make me feel really at home,, especially, as i always dine alone.. What more can i say, except " Nice Job The George.....regards Chris Gomez

We loved it overall. A very good dining experience. Good food and very attentive service. The dining room is modern and well designed. It felt quite private. The menu is a bit limited and the portion sizes were a little small. The bread and butter dessert was the best

Excellent waiter, room, table. Dirty menus, only one vegetarian main course, which was disappointing. Default Bloody Mary contains beef, which I only knew from previous experience, was not flagged to us, the non beef version I had was drab, no ice, poor presentation. Food was good but choc mousse dessert looked, frankly, like dog crap. Tasted great but again…all the content is good here but across the board presentation/visuals are below standard. But the waiter was excellent.

Good food but really good service, both in the bar before sitting down and from our server “Ruyman” which led to a really nice evening, would go there again if I go back to Rye

This was a lovely meal in a wonderful restaurant in the centre of a beautiful town. The food itself was lovely with some beautiful flavours but the service was outstanding.

The poor service spoilt the evening. Pre dinner drinks not bought before starters. Coffees didn't arrive at all. The couple next door did not get a side order without asking for it. The restaurant was not busy. The food was good a shame about the service which let's the George down.

Food was good but tiny portion for guinea fowl with mushrooms - only had 4 mushrooms. Had to wait over 35 minutes for main course. Had gambas but had to ask twice for a finger bowl. Cutlery dropped on the floor.

Lovely fresh fish, delightful venue, friendly, helpful staff

Lovely exterior, interior and location. Service almost non existent. Very loud including with young children “outdoor voices”. Food inconsistent. Enjoyed the rice dish but definitely on the oily side. Wanted to celebrate a special occasion but seemed we just waited for drinks and service the entire time.

Fantastic first experience at The George. We went to celebrate our anniversary & they made it really special. The waiter was very professional and friendly. They gave us a lovely table, Proseccos & desert to help us celebrate. It was a lovely evening. The whole building is stunning & immaculate. Food was delicious & all the staff were very efficient & professional. We will recommend to family & friends & already can’t wait to visit again.

The menu was disappointing and the actual food was even more disappointing. Very noisy with few people there. Very rushed our table was booked for 6.30 and we were home by 7.30. Wine by the glass was restricted to a choice of three. Considering there is a pub attached. Expensive disappointing night al in all.

Food was fantastic. Each dish was lovely. Unfortunately we never received our wine despite chasing this, which we ordered to have with our main. Our waitress was lovely but sounded as if the issue was with the bar. Lonely setting but was very very warm in there.

The George continues to be one of my favourite places to eat, not just in Rye, because I eat out in London a lot as well...the food is always constantly good,, but i think the service, and friendliness of ALL the teams involved, from the front desk, to those unseen in kitchen,,and those that keep the hotel so clean,,,,all go to make this one of my favourite places to go....especially if you're on your own...nice job George Team..cheers Chris Gomez

We had a fantastic evening. The food was excellent, although we’d love to see squid on the menu! The atmosphere was good and the waiter fantastic. Highly recommend.

Friendly waiter, excellent lamb, sea bass. busy due to a wedding reception upstairs so some cocktails and food items unavailable.

I was on a day trip to Rye with a close friend and we had booked to come here for lunch. We began with excellent olives and bread. For mains, my friend had the sea bass and I had the fish and chips. Both of us considered the food to be outstanding. It came promptly, and service was exemplary. Neither of us drank alcohol or had a dessert, but what we had was extremely good.

Yes I may be a local,, but the George Hotel really is an outstanding place, not just to eat, but to spend the whole evening....This is especially true , if you are dinning solo....all the team are so professional ,,yet extremely friendly. The Chef also puts some interesting "twists" into the menu,, without being too Avant-garde....nothing is too much trouble for the front of house teams.....and because of the , slightly open plan kitchen, it's nice to see the complete process...for me , Chris Gomez,, this has to be one of favourite place....and that includes London where I eat a lot....my thats to ALL the teams,front and back of house...nice job..Regards Chris G

Lovely building and decor. Gorgeous Garden. They have rooms to stay as well. Lots of different rooms to eat and drink in. Large dining area with open kitchens. Service brilliant. Good menu. Food was beautifully presented and tasted great. Wish we had found it on our first night because we could have stayed there for the whole day easily.

Excellent meal, full of flavour and attention to detail.

Food was ok, fish slightly undercooked but otherwise all good. Main concerns were grubby looking menus, dirty water bottle, bits in the water and dessert being served on a bowl with large chip in it. All these things are easily remedied. While staff and service were fine, the water and dessert bowl point to lack of care and attention to detail.

Great service, value for money on drinks is good. Standard cocktail is £11 which is normal. The mocktails are better than London pricing and are very reasonable. Service is lovely and you feel very waited on but not too much. Also not asked how is the food which is good. It’s the worst normally in restaurants when they ask you a question mid mouthful…. Would say the pricing for the food size is a little off and give a little more food. Not a lot more. Maybe just 1/5th more

We thought that the menu was very disappointing very limited especially the desserts, also a tad overpriced. I wouldn’t rush back.

Had a lovely, relaxed family meal with good service and excellent food. Would like more vegetarian options if possible. Very helpful to gluten free member of our party. Not cheap, but good quality .

I booked lunch at The George to celebrate my birthday. Not given the option to sit in the restaurant and directed to the bar area. The food was good and the staff pleasant. However after the desserts were served, no one returned to see if we would like coffee or drinks. Disappointing for a birthday celebration!

I would give The George five stars all round if it had not been for the chaotic service at breakfast! Staff looked miserable and manager rushed around shouting orders and achieved very little! Shame as it is a great place to stay in centre of Rye

Had a really enjoyable dinner here with exemplary service from Layla. The food was really tasty - chorizo starter and moules starter followed by seabass and the George cheeseburger. We really enjoyed our meal, Layla served us with smiles and professionalism, the ambience was good and we would definitely return. Thank you.

If you're in Rye you have to go there! Service was above and beyond and I had one of my best fish and chips in my life

What a lovely meal we we had. The service was excellent. Charming Spanish waiter 🇪🇸 Excellent cheeseburgers and fish and chips. Not your standard though - fresh, tasty, succulent. Everything was perfect. Thank you. Next time we are in Rye, this will be the first place we eat in! Bravo 👍

We were staying the night at The George and so booked a table for dinner and are glad we did. The level of attention and service from the bar to table was first class and delivered with politeness and a smile. Our food was all cooked and presented very well. We both had mussels to start (good size portion of plump, succulent mussels) with one lamb rump (large portion, cooked to perfection and pink) and one sea bass (very generous fillet, again cooked to perfection). For desert we had a dark chocolate mousse and a sticky toffee pudding which, as with the above, were first class. There are many places to eat in Rye but I am sure none will offer much better than The George.

Had the steak which was cooked well and tender. However, the chips were covered in salt, which took the flavour of the steak away and the salad had too strong a dressing poured over it. A very poor selection of three deserts.
