My husband Mike and I went here yesterday we had been shopping all day and we were hungry. We arrived a bit too early for food so we made ourselves comfortable and ordered drinks. The bar staff were very friendly and helpful and the pub was spotlessly clean including both the Gents and Ladies. We eventually ordered our food I chose the Chicken and pesto Pizza it was hot and very tasty I enjoyed it but could not quite manage all of it so they kindly put it in a box to take home. Mike ordered The Steak and Ale pie that came with mash and veg and plenty of gravy he thoroughly enjoyed his meal too. I couldn’t manage the whole bottle of Prosecco so they gave me it to bring home. We even got to speak with the owner who was a lovely friendly gentleman too. All in all this pub is a real gem we just wish it was in our village this is our second visit and it won’t be our last. We would definitely recommend this pub it’s great. A big thank you to all the staff from Chris & Mike.

My husband and I have been visiting The Chequers for almost three years and the experience we have today is as warm and welcoming as the first day we walked in as newcomers to the village! Having relocated from London post-Covid, we were looking for a different lifestyle and following the advice of my father in-law, searched for a village with a ‘proper pub’ at the heart of the community. I didn’t really understand what the big deal was about that advice but having experienced the kindness, warmth and sense of belonging that you get when you experience the hospitality at The Chequers, I completely understand it and don’t think our new life would be quite the same without it. Diane and Andrew have created something unique and extremely special. From the fabulous team they recruit, to the thoughtful decor, delicious menus and array of familiar and new exciting drinks, along with well thought out events - every element hits the mark and places them firmly at the centre of our community. Well trusted and respected, nothing seems ever too much for them and we always prioritise taking all of our friends and family to The Chequers when they visit us. More recently I’ve also been blown away by the excellent private dining catering that they have provided at our home for business events. Thank you to Diane, Andrew, and the entire team. You are incredible and it’s because of you we have found a true sense of community in our village and made a great group of friends for life. Life changing, thank you!

I have had many drinks in The Chequers over the years, playing tennis in Biddenden and football at High Halden, stopping off at this fabulous inn on the way home. However, I had never eaten here before today, despite being tempted by what I had seen delivered to others before. We had booked a table on the way back from a trip to Batemans in Sussex and we couldn't have wished for a better eating experience to make our day complete. A lovely relaxed round of drinks before dinner, choice of tables and a fab menu to choose from. Starters were superb, mains even better and the puddings really tasty. All drinks were fine and rounded off an enjoyable family trip out. Above all else the staff were very friendly, attentive and pleasant to talk to, attributes that cannot be taken for granted at many an establishment these days unfortunately. Seemed like a really friendly and hospitable tavern and we will be back, despite the distance! Thanks to all at The Chequers.

It was a Sunday carvery, it was delicious. Everything was cooked just right. For dessert I had the crumble, it was divine.Definitely going back,Service issue aside, sometimes these things happen, it’s a Shepherd Neame pub, With a Landlady, and their menu, not the Managed house frozen stuff, which you get in some places.

We arrived at 3:20 as we’ve drove past this place a few times and it looked lovely, the weather was fantastic so thought we would try eating there and sit in the garden. Unfortunately we was told by staff member there’s no food it’s only 12-3 and then starts again at 6, this was disappointing considering it was practically empty there was only 1 other couple there so thought maybe could be lenient. There’s no signs on the building making it clear or stating that food was 12-3 So we went up up the road to the pig & sty and food and service was fantastic. Would of thought it would be a good idea and make sense to have food all day, especially during the summer. It’s a shame as we drove quite a while to get here as well.

My dear friends booked lunch here today to celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary. Most of the twelve guests opted for the Carvery. A quantity over quality approach is adopted here and it fails miserably. Yes you can pile your plate up with uncooked Yorkshire pudding, soggy thick skinned roast potatoes and further similar vegetables. A waiter managed to spill a full glass of Coke over two lady guests leaving them with damp clothing for the duration. However to compensate this management agreed to deduct the cost of the Coke which doused the two ladies but then reminded the bill payer that a £20 service charge would apply. Unbelievable and shame on you Chequers.

Enjoyed a lovely pasta ravioli today at the Chequers, very nice, with a great well dressed salad, but although this might sound petty, being charged extra for a few shavings of parmisan 'cheesed' me off! To add more to my bill without prior notice really bugged me. What next, charges for salt n pepper without letting you know? The service, although polite and cheery, consisted of just bringing my plate to my table. A simple 'every thing alright?' at some point would have been appreciated and courteous. Having worked in the service industry myself, I like to leave a fair tip, but I found this hard to justify today. I only tipped a minimal amount. Although I was eating alone, I would still normally leave at least a £10 / £15 tip, so the hidden charge for a few shavings of parmisan, and the non service, saved me a few quid, without me feeling any guilt at all. Sorry Chequers, good food, but otherwise I wasn't impressed.

WOW! The food is amazing especially the burgers which are made in house with locally sourced meat. This is my wife and I’s second visit to the pub; we returned this evening as we had such a lovely experience at the beginning of the week with Jordan. Austen looked after us this evening. The pub has a lovely atmosphere and was very busy for a mid-week evening. There is a good selection of food on the menu. I have never seen Bao Buns on a pubs menu before and wow they were delicious…. Photo attached 😁 We are on holiday in Kent and if we are ever in the area again we will certainly be popping in to see Jordan, Austen and the team. They were so welcoming and will do anything to ensure your visit is enjoyable. Thanks Guys!

Been 3 times now, one evening and twice for the carvery. Excellent all times, really enjoyed the food and the service is brilliant from all the staff. We have 2 retrievers, not an issue at all, they got plenty of fuss, treats and a water bowl. Apparently they have the best brownie, and this is from a 13 year old that has had brownies all over the world! Her portion today was huge so she was very happy after a busy weekend. Look forward to coming next time we're down.

The roast is amazing. So far one of the best ones I have had. The plate of half chicken is big, had to take a doggy bag home. It was that big if you are ever in tenterden it's a must go love it.... Will go again..

I would give The George five stars all round if it had not been for the chaotic service at breakfast! Staff looked miserable and manager rushed around shouting orders and achieved very little! Shame as it is a great place to stay in centre of Rye

Lovely food and attentive service but a bit slow.
