The George has recently been taken over by Neil & Angela. We had a family lunch there on Sunday and as we are locals we’re keen to see the changes. Whilst it undoubtedly needs some TLC and updating, hospitality goes a long way for way and this was most definitely on display. We were warmly greeted by Neil, a fire was blazing in the grate & candles were lit on a very cold & miserable afternoon. The Orton Scar cafe could take a lesson from them as the hospitality there is appalling! The food was freshly cooked, piping hot. The steak pie which I believe they source from the fantastic Dales Butcher in Kirkby Lonsdale was exceptional. One of us had it with mash and one with chips. The chips were very good. The beer was well kept. We enjoyed it very much and wish Neil & Angela great success.

We loved staying at the George Hotel in Orton. It was a neighborhood pub perfect for Coast to Coast walkers. Bronagh and Andy made us feel so welcome. The room was very comfortable and the food was excellent. The drying room was exceptional and an excellent place for clothing that hasn’t dried. We were very glad to have stopped in Orton. Bronagh and Andy, we were so happy to meet you at the George Hotel. Thank you.

Food is freshly cooked and homemade the price's are amazing but better than all that is the service which is the best I've found anywhere don't let the dated but clean decor put you off this is truly a little jewel in Westmorelands crown

As we were staying in Orton village for a short break we called into The George Hotel Bar & Restaurant for our tea on a couple of evenings (24th and 25th October 2022) and were given a very warm welcome from the two landladies and all the regulars at the bar. This is a very hospitable, local, village pub and we were soon drawn into the conversations taking place The food is typical pub fare but that does not detract from the quality and it is all, clearly, home made and not just heated up 'freezer' food. Over the course of our two visits we enjoyed the Lakeland Burger, Southern Fried Chicken Burger (both with superb chunky chips) and the Chorizo Pasta Bake washed down with a couple of pints of Wainrights Bitter and all for a very reasonable price This is the kind of pub I like, honest, homely, welcoming and generous and I would highly recommend

The George was our Orton stopover on the Coast to Coast walk and within 5 minutes of walking in we felt welcomed and at home. Bronagh and Andy are excellent hosts to visitors and locals alike. We were offered a choice of the bar or the restaurant and we chose the bar. We ordered battered chicken to share as a starter but the landlord forgot to put it through! Our mains were the beef & Guinness pie (with extra gravy) and salmon, which I had with home made chips instead of new potatoes. Both meals were really delicious. With drinks the bill was just £35. Really friendly welcome, which isn’t always the case in a village pub.

We stayed here for the final night of our trip to the lakes. The landlord was very welcome if and we thought great service that he called us earlier in the evening to check if we needed a table to eat. The rooms have clearly recently been refurbished to a high standard as were beautiful and extremely comfortable. There was plenty of parking and breakfast was delicious with quality ingredients and very good service. I really hope to stay here again.

We had dinner here with some friends and really enjoyed it. It's typical 'pub grub' but nevertheless very tasty with good sized portions. The Lakeland burger I had was juicy and the bacon and cheese topping was an excellent addition. I substituted the chips for salad (no quibbles at all) but the chips my husband had with his scampi were very good. We shared a roulade and again there was no problem or additional charge for sharing. My friend had the vegetarian risotto and said it was very flavourful. Service was efficient and friendly and although we were the last remaining in the dining room as they were setting it for breakfast we weren't put under any pressure to leave. Another plus for me and that is they don't allow dogs in the restaurant.

Often visiting the area, it’s a great half way meeting place for us with family..... our usual place seemed to have undergone changes recently and so with a google search it sent us to The George a couple of miles down the road. What a lovely hidden gem, a proper pub, for families who want food!! 11 of us (and a baby needing feeding and what not) landed unannounced and it wasn’t an issue at all. Seated in the side area, working out well for us as all the kids had a bit of space and weren’t in the way... lovely meals all round. Fantastic service and a really lovely afternoon. We will be back, all of us!! But we will ring ahead next time

I hoped to find something other than a Jennings beer here. Guest beers are only here in the spring-summer months and then there are from the Marston's stable. so would be Ringwood. Ale was £3-40 a pint too, way out of line with other pubs in the 20 mile radius. I wont be returning and wouldn't recommend it for a drink. I cant comment on food or accommodation but this is not a real ale drinkers pub. The decor is very bland too.

How can you get mash potato and crumble so wrong ? Mash, cold and lumpy; crumble cold, and just a smattering of spongy (probably packet) crumble on top of fruit. We tolerated the mash but when the crumble came out we'd had enough and refused to pay for our desert. In addition the minuscule portion of what appeared to be re-heated risotto that contained dried out vegetables alongside the mushy veg served with the pie and sausage placed on top of an obviously frozen, soggy Yorkshire pud added to an awful experience. A waitress came and queried our concerns and agreed the food should have been better as she left to go to the kitchen, we assumed to tackle the chef and come back with, at the minimum an apology....she didn't return !! Waitresses where by this time ignoring us, quite a contrast from pre our complaint, so much so we were struggling to pay our extortionate bill for appalling food. Away for the weekend to celebrate a significant birthday, you managed to ruin it !! Had you apologised and dealt with our concerns in a decent and genuine manner it might have been less painful an experience :( How can you get such simple food to be so bad ?

Driving south we decided to come off the M6 motorway, between the Southwaite and Tebay services. We followed signs to a small village called Orton, where we had lunch in the bar of the George Hotel. Hungry, we both ordered the steak and ale pie. We were not disappointed. We were served a proper pie i.e. meat and gravy enclosed on all sides by delicious pastry. I had chips and veg, while my husband had mash and veg. Both the mash and the chips were perfect, as were the carrots, cabbage and cauliflower which accompanied the pies. Our plates were full. The potions plentiful and cooked to perfection. They weren't the cheapest nor the most expensive of main courses. Both meals and drinks cost £26+. Which was good value for money. Kept us going for hours on our onward journey. Another bonus was that Orton is a pretty little village for a post lunch stroll. We were delighted to discover a small chocolate factory, shop and restaurant directly opposite the George Hotel. We had coffee there and enjoyed the delicious complimentary chocolates. Will definitely stop off in Orton again and give the service stations a miss.
