Lovely family friendly pub, really good staff. Bedrooms very comfy, unfortunately the tv only had 2 channels and the bin had not been emptied and had a used male sanitary item in it. I would have rated 5 if they had at least emptied the bin. Great breakfast but chef unable to do a well done egg as requested.

I never booked a hotel room, but went to the bar to have a beer. I received a fantastic welcome from the receptionist and the bartender. They seemed happy and joyful, in which ticks the right boxes when it comes to hospitality. Drink prices are cheaper than I expected. Staropramen on tap for less than £5? Absolute bargain! I will most definitely come back when I'm at Axminster in the near future. I will possibly book a room there too.

We visited here over the weekend for a meal with some freinds. The service was absolutely fine the food was below average though the belly pork was really dry and overcooked. The sauage and mash was alright the mash was quite hard though and lacking butter and cream. After dinner we sat and had a couple of drinks and we were happy chatting and drinking until about 10.15 when all of sudden last orders was called which I thought was very odd for a Saturday evening about 2 minutes later they turned out all the lights and we basically were forced to pay and leave and. When paying I asked for a quick shot and I was told sorry no. When I asked why I was told just no and I don't have to give you reason which I thought was extremely rude considering we just spent and good couple 100 on for a drink. So we paid and left I was then told this happens all the time in there as soon as hits 10 o clock they want everyone out so then can close even on Friday a Saturday night. So don't expect to sit there and have drink after you meal in the evening as you will kicked buy 10.30

My friend and I came up to Axminster for the weekend. We stayed at The George Hotel on a Saturday night. All the staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming, a special shout out to Nikki who was brilliant and the Manager too. We had food in the evening which was very good, especially the sticky toffee pudding. Our twin room was on the second floor, at the front of the building. It was spacious, clean and comfortable. The full English for breakfast was great too. I would definitely recommend The George Hotel, the staff really are brilliant!

Our room, are at the front of the hotel, was very noisy. I think it was due to the work in progress somewhere else, because all night large trucks were passing by. To reach the room, you needed to climb old chairs with very old stair covering, difficult for elder people or people with bad knees. Breakfast was very English. People working here were all lovely and very friendly.

Beautifully renovated Georgian property, directly in the centre of Axminster, on a traffic island (so to speak). Car park attached, (but beware of exiting as it has blind spots), and outdoor seating alongside, some of which is non-smoking. Staff are wonderful: friendly, warm and funny, and they adore dogs. In fact, the pub is dog friendly, selling dog meals (who knew?), snacks and perhaps even toys (but don't quote me!). When we visited it was D Day Remembrance and the staff were playing 1940s music, and dressed up in that era, and looked fantastic! I'm a veteran and it really touched me to see this done. Didn't stay, but the rooms appear on a level with other quality establishments, and I would be more than happy to be here overnight. A lovely little visit, all in all. Thank you guys!

This hotel has friendly and helpful staff. There is not much to say about the room. It was up a very steep set of stairs. The room was rather dingy. The bed was very squeaky like it was not assembled properly. Three out of six bulbs of the ceiling lights were out. We did not make a fuss as we were there for one night only. Stayed at The George for one night as a stop over on the way back from Cornwall (Axminster is exactly half way home for us). We were greeted by Mollie, who although was very busy, took the time to show us where everything was and was really friendly, she was very happy to answer our questions. She explained that the hotel didn’t do food on a Sunday evening so gave us a couple of great recommendations for restaurants close by (the Italian opposite the church a few mins walk away was excellent). Our room was lovely and spacious, bathroom clean and we had everything we needed. Breakfast was a little limited but it was served with a smile from the lovely staff and overall the stay was great value for money. The George has a lovely atmosphere and was an unexpected little gem, we will definitely stay again if we are in the area.

The building has been well renovated and operates as a hotel, bar and eatery, It has new management and staff. It was very quiet when we arrived, do note that you cannot park in the car park if you are not a resident of the hotel. There is sanitiser on entry and a QR code to scan however there was a certain reluctance on the part of the barman to manually write our details as my phone does not scan QR codes. He informed us that in a very short while there will be no admission if you do not have QR enable phone. The table are well spaced and there are notices explaining the cleaning schedule, Our drinks arrived but mine was spilt on the table, he acknowledged the spill but did nothing to clear it up. Service was sloppy and not very professional. The food we ordered was well presented and nicely cooked. but we will not be returning.

My first visit in years to the George, new owners, and they are very welcoming, they smile which is so nice, it has a lovely ambience, a really nice place to be relaxing, and you get waited on with your roast, the chef has to be a yorkshire man the size of the Yorkshire puddings and the flavour very tasty, the pork was nice size slices very lean with fat only on the edge, cracking, apple sauce, and this was new to me black pudding stuffing, roast potatoes, really nice carrots, broccoli and cauliflower cheese, and the best gravy ever, I need to go back chat up the chef I need to know more about this gravy, I can honestly say this roast was the best I have ever eaten out, I can recommend and know you will not be disappointed.

Recently this pub has undergone new management and a team new of staff who were working like busy bees! All super friendly staff who kept me topped up with fresh milk for my tea in my room. Three of them were working a busy Saturday evening shift, keeping us all fed and watered whilst socially distancing. Shame their card machines don't allow for tips in this progressively cashless new normal. Decor inside the pub is very gastro pub and the food quality is high. Parking is free for patrons. We were in room 104 which is really weirdly laid out. The end of the bed gives about a foot before the bathroom wall starts so you have to scoot past it without taking the TV off the wall each time. Best suited for someone who isn't clumsy! Agree with other reviews that it is a noisy location as you are on a busy roundabout type setup... However with Boris Johnson new 10pm curfew it means that it isn't pub gatherers keeping you awake. Dinner was delicious... We both had mussels which were amazing. I had the veggie Wellington and my fiancé had the George burger. Puddings were a yummy sticky Toffee pudding and a custard tart.

George looks much swisher than the pictures. Lovely ambience from outside lighting to staff being so friendly, accomodating and kind. The food was excellent. Mackerel starter with smoked eel was gorgeous with the gooseberry pickle and two mains of calves liver which was cooked to perfection, beautifully chargrilled and pork belly, no fat in sight just lovely crackling and moist meat. The veg was delicious too. Pudding was a step too far in egg custard and sticky toffee pudding portions too vast to eat. Fabulous honeycomb ice-cream. Can't wait to go back, again and again. Wine was well suggested and whole meal £70 including 4 pints of beer and 2 wines.

We stayed for three nights at the George while exploring the Jurassic Coast. The hotel, an eighteenth century building right at the centre of the town, has recently been refurbished to a very high standard. Our room was clean, spacious and comfortable. Although there is a fairly busy road outside, traffic noise was not a problem even with the windows open. We ate at the hotel each night and the food was excellent. The menu is not wide but offers some very imaginative, well-presented choices. There is a range of real ales available. The most outstanding feature of the hotel, however, is the staff. They are welcoming, friendly and attentive. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would highly recommend the hotel. The location is very convenient. There is a free car park available, though this can become rather congested. There is, however, a very reasonably priced NCP car park just across the road, which we used one night.

We found The George Hotel offering the 20% discount so opted for this.We arrived at the hotel which had a one way system due to Covid19, this worked perfectly,We were shown to the stairs and informed of the exit doors and how to find the room. We were booked in for a King room which was perfect. The bed and pillows were the most comfortable ones I have ever slept on. Now the rooms are not made up or replenished during your stay due to covid19, it was easy enough to ask for toiletries and towels to be replenished and this was done promptly. Our room faced The main busy road which was quiet at night, only issue was the chorus of seagulls and they unfortunately can't be gagged. We had dinner on the first evening which was delicious, a little pricey but the Hotel clearly has taste as it is a popular place with people. I have to say the food was fantastic, everything else let the place down.We were a large group that had booked and order our food in advance. We were given a menu over 3 weeks in advance to order from and the day before our booking we were called to say the menu had changed and they no longer had one of the options we had ordered and would have to change our order. We had booked our table for 7:30pm and our starters came out at 7:30pm which meant that some of our party hadn’t sat down or even ordered drinks when the food arrived. When the food came out some of the meals were different to what was ordered because of the menu change but we were not informed and end up with fish but in a different sauce to what was detailed menu we were given. From the first main being served to the last was 20 minutes so the first person had finished before the last had received their meal. On asking for a wine list we were told “our menu has just been updated, what would you like and I can let you know if we have it” rather than being able to browse a wine menu. It’s such a shame because the food was so good but the experience was let down by everything else.

Stayed for 1 night with work as we have a client locally. Hotel rooms and bar decor fantastic... really nice. The food was also fantastic.Unfortunately let down by a few of the staffs attitude. The breakfast host was surly and just generally unpleasant. Told me sit anywhere (which I did) only then to be ‘told off’ for sitting on a certain table. I didn’t really care where I sat but it’s your job to tell me. Breakfast times appear to have been chosen for the benefit of the owners opposed to the convenience of guests. They don’t follow industry standards for hotels. Probably won’t stay again which is a shame because I visit frequently with work. Politeness costs nothing but lost business does.

Booked for a one night stay including breakfast. Arrived early evening, was expected and shown to my room. Recently refurbished, very clean ... it was great. Went back down to the bar, had a couple of pints of 'Exmouth Gold' (very nice) and a thoroughly enjoyable two course meal... left a 'healthy' tip. I had been informed that breakfast ran from 0800-1000 at weekends. On waking the following morning and after a really nice shower, I decided to dispense with breakfast and get on the road. On leaving my room at 0740, I went downstairs to be confronted with three doors all showing 'exit' signs. One was back into the bar (which was locked), one into the 'disabled' toilets, and another, which when I opened it, led straight onto the street. There was another door (to the kitchen) that was locked. There was somebody in the kitchen preparing breakfast. Despite knocking on the door for a number of minutes, I was unable to attract his attention. Another person came into the kitchen who glanced up, saw me at the door (there was a small window in the door) and came to the door. She said she would open up the door to the bar. A minute or so later, I heard a key going into the lock, it 'rattle' and then silence. As the door didn't move, I assumed that she had used the incorrect key and had gone to get the correct one. After thirty seconds of silence, I tried the door to discover it had been unlocked. I walked through to the deserted bar. I went around the corner of the bar to see the woman who had unlocked the door doing something behind the bar. She looked up, saw me and said 'I am setting up for breakfast'. Not 'good morning', or 'sorry about the door' etc. When I pointed out that I didn't want breakfast, I just wanted to leave she said 'well, leave then!. I expressed concern about the 'exit' signs not leading to 'exits', to which she replied, 'weren't you told last night?' I replied 'No'. I put the key on the bar and walked towards the door to the car park. It was locked. I slipped the top bolt and it still held. At this point, I assumed it needed a key to open. I asked the lady how do I get out? She came from around the bar and slipped the bottom bolt and walked back to the bar. I informed her that I thought her attitude was 'appalling', hoped that she had a 'good day' and left. Such a shame that the 'hospitality skills' of one individual ruined what had been up to that point an enjoyable stay. All the hard work of the bar staff and chef of the previous evening was wasted. A business usually wants return customers. Regrettably, I won't be one.

My partner and I stayed Jan 31st - Feb 4th with our young baby. We cannot recommend this hotel more, it has been such a lovely first family holiday and a brilliant experience. The room was beautiful, spacious and very clean - something we look for when taking our baby places. The George provided a travel cot and she slept brilliantly throughout our whole stay.Every day we came back from trips to surrounding areas to our room beautifully put back together, as it was when we arrived. The bathroom was also unbelievably clean, with powerful shower, bath and light up vanity mirror. We enjoyed the breakfast every morning, trying different things every day. The kitchen staff even did piece of toast for our daughter when we asked. The evening menu was delightful, the garlic chicken breast was amazing and I highly recommend going to the George for dinner even if you aren’t staying in the hotel. Staying away from home with our 5 month old daughter can be really difficult and sometimes very overwhelming - all of the bottle prep, sterilising and washing makes you not even want to leave the house. The George provided what we needed to make our trip easier and hassle free, for a mother with severe anxiety this was a godsend!! The staff are delightful, Mandy, Lisa and James have all really made our trip memorable - they are all very warm and welcoming and always have a smile on their faces. It was comforting knowing we were staying in a hotel that had staff who would actually pay attention to us and our daughter, knowing she would giggle and smile at them really made my day as a mother. All in all, we will definitely be staying at the George again and I will be recommending it to my friends and family!

The George Hotel has not long been refurbished after being closed for many years. They have done an excellent job! The food is what you might expect for this type of establishment, and the staff are very friendly and helpful. Recommended for a meal out.

Have never been to the George Inn since it re-opened and as we only live a few miles away myself and 7 others thought we would give it a try. The George is tastefully decorated and provided a comfortable environment. The staff were friendly and helpful without being too pushy. Several different choices of the menu were chosen and the food was presented well and plates and food were hot. We all enjoyed our meals and would recommend and return in the future

We had our works Xmas party here and had a great night. Food was beautifully cooked and served. Warm atmosphere and staff made us welcome. Our waitress was fabulous and pretty much single handily served and cleared(didn’t get her name) but she was great.

First time coming here since opened.....poor quality food and atrocious service, even worse the manger on duty had no or little experience in dealing with customer issues. Other places in the area much better!

I am quite surprised by the very mixed reviews on here. We have visited The George twice now during lunchtime and on both occasions have found the staff to be welcoming, attentive, polite and very efficient. The food we had was well presented and generous. My husband and I ordered the cheese and chutney rolls, and although we received a ham, cheese and tomato roll instead, it was actually rather lovely and the ham was delicious!Overall, we will certainly continue to visit here during our visits to family nearby.

Such a shame this meal didn’t make the grade. We have had other meals here that have been good. It took over 15 mins to get a drink, even tho the bar man knew we were there. Lady who took the order was we thought quite informed. Meals arrived, after 30 min wait one of the pies was the wrong flavour, the burger was cremated, where we asked for NO peas, peas were wasted. Straws in the kids J2O’s not nearly long enough for the bottles and the kids nearly spilt their drinks. When the desserts arrived the choc pots were missing part of the recipe, when asked where it was we were told, it wasn’t good enough so the waitress had decided not to bring it out or even mention it was missing, until we asked where it was.She did reduce the bill, but non of the problems should have occurred if everyone had been taking notice of what they were doing. The pub wasn’t busy so there wasn’t any excuse.

After hearing other people talk about how good the George hotel was we were invited to dinner by two good friends, sadly we were a little disappointed, the sharing starter we had was to be between three people, three slices of bread with a small bowl of Olive oil with Balsamic Vinegar and Olives which were dry, Service was slow, Not sure why as not many people eating when we arrived,Food average nothing exceptional. All in all not not a great experience.

We booked an evening with the Christmas dinner menu. The turkey dinner had good and poor elements. The turkey wrapped in bacon and stuffed we all thought very good and tasty. The cauliflower cheese also excellent. The other veg were over cooked. However the roast potatoes were awful, likewise the Yorkshire puddings were over cooked and actually burnt. Difficult to see why any chef would want to send out overcooked, burnt food. The Christmas pudding was excellent, coffee and mince pies fine. This was our first visit to the George Inn and if they want to serve restaurant food then improvements do need to be made.

Went for a Christmas drink with my daughter (2 years old) and my parents. It's about the 6th time we been and enjoy the tasteful decorations and delicious wine. However this time after being there for a bout 30 minutes we were asked if we were ordering food and when we said we were just having a drink we were then told that we couldn't stay as they were serving food and didn't want a 2 year old running around. She was walking around the bar to talk to another table and then coming back to our table, always accompanied my Granny or Grandad. If you don't want children in the bar area you need to have a sign or tell clientele when they arrive not make them feel unwelcome after they ordered drinks. Either way we won't be coming to this unwelcoming bar for another drink with or without my daughter which is a shame.

Wanting a light lunch with a friend and not knowing how busy it may be I emailed to reserve us a table and heard nothing, followed it up with a phone call and left a message, again I heard nothing - poor customer service from the go-get! Do they not know that you never get a second chance to make a first impression? It wasn't difficult to get a table as it turned out - the place was virtually empty - not a good sign on market day. Staff appeared bored and quite surly. Menus were food stained and there wasn't the light lunch option of a filled roll as on the website. The food we chose was acceptable, but nothing special. The George promises so much more than it delivers and we won't be back.

Manager has issues. Which reflects throughout. We were accused of leaving the premises over the prescribed alcohol limit to drive. Untrue, insulting. It has become apparent there are many cases of poor service/attitude... sad to see.

I am staying in the area and have eaten here every day so far this week. The lunch is very good, the building is very lovely. Tonight I went for dinner and arrived and ordered a glass of wine, (I’ve had a tab every other day this week) Before I had arrived I’d had a big upset and just couldn’t think straight. I couldn’t remember my PIN numbers and said to the barman that I’d need a minute to find my card. In front of everyone in the bar he removed the wine from my hand and said I’ll take that back until you’ve paid my sweet. Incredibly embarrassing. I found my card and paid. Then we decided to have dinner, I had steak which was mediocre but my husband had the smoked haddock which was minute. I don’t feel the evening service is as good as the lunch time service, having said that we were over charged by £17 yesterday!

Tastefully restored coaching inn with a fine restaurant - all at a reasonable price. Great service, marshalled by the most pleasant and helpful JAMES. Draughty scrumpy is available most nights and a good selection of local ales at all times. The car park can be difficult but there's a cheap NCP over the road!

We arrived in Axminster about 9am , l had spoken to Jamie the previous evening and he said he would find us somewhere to change on our arrival and he was true to his word. Later in the day we returned to The George, Jamie was really polite and extremely helpful. We where very pleased with the room it was lovely decorated and very clean. We were in one of the front rooms so we had a little traffic noise, but this didn’t bother us at all.I have to add that the breakfast was delicious and possibly the best scrambled egg I’ve ever eaten. We will definitely return and if anyone wants a excellent bed and breakfast venue then this is the place, you will not be disappointed. One last bonus is it’s only 2 minutes walk from River Cottage (Hughs Place)

Stayed on a Friday night, B&B. Rooms recently refurbished. Our room was bright and clean. Bathroom compact but spotless with a great shower. (Shower door needs a bit of attention as stiff to open). Bed linen good although pillows and mattress not as firm as I'd like. Breakfast was a quiet affair with friendly service. No complaints. The toast arrived with hot breakfast so was warm. A change from many places where it arrives too soon.Downside--quite noisy around 11pm-12am. Some road noise although overnight you don't get much traffic apart from the odd idiot racing through (not the pubs fault).Good value. Would return.

We had a crab sandwich yesterday and were surprised at the price of £15.95 each but we ordered them anyway. We found the sandwiches were much smaller than usual and not so tasty. On checking my bank statement I see that Rockfish has taken over. Probably explains high price and smaller sandwiches. Just £9.95 further down the beach at 50⁰ North and much better quality.
