Nice location on the high road, but really shabby rooms. The staff tries to care, but unfortunately basics fail on number of fronts: the room and bathroom was not cleaned when we arrived, we asked for that to be corrected. It wasn't. The hotel in general also has a significant smell challenge with the 'pub' being an Indian restaurant. The A/C didn't work. The window couldn't close (our room was on the street). Nothing was fixed despite repeat asks. Won't stay there again.

Absolutely vile. Turned up they had given the twin room I booked away to someone else and just substituted with a double. Pointless when I’m staying with a friend ! The place is a kip. Filthy. Didn’t even use shower showered at the event we were at. The shower curtain is a health hazard so I’m sure you can imagine the stage of the rest of the place. Wipe you’re feet on the way out !

Utterly appalling. Shabby. Not clean. Lights in the room were not working. We were booked in for two nights. Our room was not cleaned. Wet towels were left in the shower. I was told that they only had one clean bath towel left, but hoped that fresh laundry would arrive! This was after 5 pm! Breakfast was expensive at £15 and a congealed mess on a plate. Do NOT waste your money on this hotel. If there was a zero option for the rating I would have selected it.

Nice hotel. Room was small, comfy but adequate. Downstairs was an Indian restaurant. I was looking forward to eating there, especially as it was raining hard. The restaurant does not open on Mondays, the day I stayed. Got soaked going to another food place. Parking at the back was good. And side entrance to the hotel has a ramp. The place was quiet and close to Gatwick., 20 mins drive. Generally needs a refurbishment. But I would stay there again.

Ideal location - sadly that’s where the positives end. Had to request a towel as only shower mat in room, cups were dirty, urine stain on underside of toilet seat, bed base unclipped (clip on floor under bed). Curtains not secured properly to rail. Stained carpet and absolutely filthy under bed, discarded water bottle goodness how long that has been there. I only visited thank goodness but friend of my stayed there for 2 nights - he definitely will not return. We were told by management’ that if we were not happy we could obtain a refund for the night and leave the hotel immediately at 9.30pm !! Absolutely dreadful in my and my friends opinion.

A perfectly nice meal for a 5:30 pm midweek meal. Friendly service, reasonably priced and all of the dishes we ordered were good: poppadoms & chutneys, butter chicken, saag aloo, tarka dahl, lemon rice & pilau rice. £48 incl two glasses of Prosecco. I’ve known and visited the George on and off for 45+ years and the only thing that I’d suggest is recapturing some of the warmth and charm that the pub has lost in recent years. It’s a beautiful old building but didn’t look or feel inviting. Then it might warrant a 5*.

Booked one night at this hotel on the way through Henfield and it was a terrible experience. The owners hadn’t updated their Google write up so the ‘free’ breakfast was actually £15 if you wanted it. The shower was freezing cold, so we were up and down the stairs four times asking them to fix it before they actually tried to help. Apparently you have to have the vanity sink tap on full blast before the hot water comes through, which is just a horrendous waste of water. And even then the hot water would sporadically turn icy every 30 seconds or so. They should not have any guests here until they get their plumbing sorted. There wasn’t even anyone around when we left at 10am to discuss this with. A truly awful experience and ecologically wasteful practices. Save yourself and go anywhere else.

Thought we would give it a try. We usually order from cowfold tandoori. This takeaway was absolutely shocking and pricey. What a waste of money. I’ll go through the order - mint sauce tasteless, greasy onion bajji and inedible greasy prawn puri. Less than a chicken breast of meat in a butter chicken. Butter chicken wasn’t a butter chicken. Lamb was like saw dust. The biriani was very spicey ( didn’t order something spicey). The only thing ok was the rice and the butter chicken had a nice flavour. Wish we had read the recent reviews. Massive disappointment.

Had no heat in our room, despite having both a radiator and an air conditioner in the room. We had to talk to them three times before they came to actually look at the room. The workers also appear to have loud parties for hours after close of business and on days the pub is closed. Club music loud enough to vibrate the walls at 8pm on a Tuesday night, for example. Music was turned down when we spoke to them. Bed was uncomfortable and room, particularly bathroom was not cleaned thoroughly. Expect better for the price. Food and bar staff were great.

I popped into this hotel/pub for coffee and was extended a friendly welcome. It’s on the high street in the centre of this busy small town. The hotel is an old building and much of the ground floor retains many of the old features which can be a bit gloomy if you prefer something more contemporary. The bar staff were very friendly and informative and the young barman from Hungary extremely polite. There are lots of food options...restaurant, bar snacks etc. Cannot comment on their quality though and not sure what standard the accommodation is like but I would certainly return again.

Visited this restaurant for the first time. The building is beautiful and the interior is warm and inviting. Upon our arrival we were about to sit in the bar end where a lovely fire was going. However a lady with her child rushed past us and it was apparent that this child was going to be noisey. So we changed our plans and sat in the empty restaurant area. Shortly after we realised that this was the owners child and mother. The waiter, bless him was trying his best and got the fire going for us. Shortly after the power cut on some but not all the lights. Not sure what the issue was but some guy in jeans and a T-shirt came over and apologised. He was the owner. The waiter was very attentive but did at times not get the little details...giving time to look at menu, steak knives, wine cooler and a like. Little details really but they do make a difference. We both ordered steak. It was cooked perfectly and tasted good however it was cold. In fact everything on the plate was just warm at best. I suspect in main this was due to a very cold plate. I did highlight this to the waiter and he said this was unusual as they heat plates but would feed it back to the kitchen. The owner did come over but made no mention of it.Overall a pleasant experience but missing some important details. If you are going to charge £25 for a plate of food, I think expectations will be pretty high and hence I can’t give it more than 3 stars for this visit. But I may give it another try in hopes it was a one off.

A friendly welcome but Room 101 is very tiny and I had to pay up front before seeing it. It is a single room but the bed, although clean and comfortable, is hardly long enough for anyone over 6ft tall. The stool under the shelf had not been hoovered behind for some time as skirting board had grey fluff on it. The room was over the night entrance / exit to the hotel so a bit noisy for early deportees. I can not recommend this hotel for a stay.

A group of four of us had lunch at The George recently. We were due at a funeral and had left plenty of time for our meal. We were early and there were very few others in the restaurant. The service was very slow, the member of staff who served us was delightful but needed more training. The food was acceptable but somewhat rough and rady (My chicken pie arrived as a slice dumped on top of chips - which were soggy). We had no time for dessert as we had waited so long for the main courses. Afterwards, there was a shaky signal for the card-reader, which made it hard to pay and then there was a frantic search for a till roll, which was located after much searching in cupboards. To top it all, there was no loo papers in the gents!!!!

Wardrobes with grout from ripped off tiles at the back which touch you clothing. Shabby furniture from a 1970s office. No headboard behind the single beds, just 'white' walls with plenty of dubious marks. Curtains are very thin. Shower room with no window, cheap thin shower curtain which isn't even wide enough for the gap and an oversink light which doesn't work. The whole room has a smell of mildew combined with urine. For £90 a night, I expect a decent standard, not that of a youth hostel.

Starter (chicken liver parfait) was so tiny, then waited 30min for a plate to be cleared before asking ourselves for it to be taken away (maybe 5 other tables in total). Following that, we waited further half an hour + for our mains, having checked on them 3 times, as well as telling the new waitress - as soon as we received the starter - they should send the mains out without waiting until we’ve finished. Steak was well done in stead of med, not worth £28, especially when arriving with the wrong sides too

After waiting at the bar to query, the salad eventually arrived as we were finishing our meal. My husband waited for sometime at the bar to settle the bill. With my folks living within a few miles of Henfield we always met at The George but a couple of years ago it changed and not for the better. The menu, staff and overall feel was dated so it was with some trepidation I booked my birthday lunch here today. Well... OMG it's back and I only wish I'd been told sooner... beautiful interior, classy and calm. A rounded menu to suit meat an non meat eaters, wonderful front of house service. My most positive comments are reserved for the quality of the food and the generous portions. It's obvious this chef loves to feed people (and believe me I've met a few who are clearly in the wrong job!) but the roast dinner is first rate, beef was full of flavour and soft like butter, plenty of veggies and when they say roasting gravy they mean a rich, deep, dark meaty glistening gravy...we got another jug just to be sure.. my husband had an authentic Hungarian Goulash which again was unctuous and sticky with paprika and spices it was a delight. It's now back to being our go to Sunday Lunch.. apparently they do starter and dessert but goodness knows where you'd put it.. splendid

I required an afternoon function for up to 40 people. Well what can I say the organisation was spot on, the food excellent an pleantyfull. I could not have been happier, the staff were at tentative in just the right quota, there if we needed something but not intrusive. Thank you, I love the atmosphere, the friendliness and the great food (good prices too) thanks again, Michx

The George Hotel, has a beautiful interior with fire place which gives it that warm country pub feeling. The last time I was there the food was delicious, the service was prompt and friendly. A delightful, place to stay and eat if you want to take a break from the City. Great walks in the area or mountainbiking.

Lovely pub in the heart of the village in Henfield. Always very welcoming and staff very friendly. Food is always very good and of a high standard. Love the atmosphere in the pub, very chilled and relaxing, usually have nice background music. Shame for the pub as it's never very busy, but I like that as easy to find table and you can hear yourself think.

Very quiet for a Friday evening. In fact we were the only table of 4 in the pub! However the food was delicious. Friendly staff, who made us very welcome. Highly recommend.

Dined at 20.00, group of four. Beautifully presented dishes, well cooked, imaginative combinations. Surprised it was so quiet on a Friday night seems to make it a hidden gem.

... but has all the ingredients to be! Attractive bar and restaurant, friendly and efficient staff (just one nice lady dealing with everything, with a smile and no hassle). Food no more than average but tasty enough. Cannot understand why it is not more popular. There has been talk locally of a new owner in the near future, and this might make the necessary difference to make George as gorgeous as it deserves. Watch this space!

Today's dining experience can be described as nothing less than a shambles. Waiting staff were visibly embarrassed not only by the sub standard quality of food and the consistent mix-ups between orders but more so the fact that diners were waiting up to an hour for their starters and a further 50 minutes plus for their main meals - all with no explanation.

popped into the George last sunday for a roast with my husband, was pleasantly surprised to be greeted with new young staff brimming with smiles. Were taken to our reserved table in the cosy Tudor end of the George and given menus and drinks order was taken very promptly. The last time we went in it was marginally quieter than it was last sunday which made us feel even more at home. even with the extra staff our order was taken quickly and food arrived with a beautiful aroma. we both had the roast pork which I must say was superb! best gravy i've had in years. I highly recommend this restaurant for anyone looking for a high end aray of value for money priced foods. Would love to personally thank the two waitresses Emily and Simone for their warm welcome and great service and I definitely will be going back!

Headed out last Sunday in search of a good pub lunch of a cold day. Most places were rammed full, but came upon The George in Henfield which was next to empty. To say the meal was a disappointment was an understatement. I had the roast pork, which when it arrived was clearly not "roast" at all, it had been carved from a cold joint of pork, with gravy poured over it to heat it up. The roast potatoes were rubbery as they'd been sitting in a warming tray for a couple of hours and the vegetables were overcooked and soggy. The roast turkey was the same set up, and the lamb shanks simply tasted odd. So disappointing as its a nice cosy pub, with open fire and wood paneling, but clearly the menu to far to ambitious for the kitchen and they should cut it in half and not do roasts if they don't have the foot fall to do them properly.

My partner and I ate here last Saturday. This was probably one of the best steaks I have ever eaten. So tasty and tender. It didn't need a steak knife to cut it as it was so tender. I had mackerel pate to start. Again very very tasty. My partner had Camembert to start which was lovely and fish, chips and mushy peas. He said it was great.

If I could give 0 stars, I absolutely would. Our team went to The Crown for our Christmas lunch, and it was an absolute nightmare. We paid a £40 deposit for 8 people, expecting a delicious festive meal based on the enticing menu. Unfortunately, everything that could go wrong did. Upon arrival, we ordered drinks and food, and about 20 minutes later, the barman informed us that they were out of turkey for the sandwich. Fine, no problem—I’ll go for the Christmas burger instead. But then, he came back and said, "Your group has ordered 4 burgers, but we only have 3 available." So, I reluctantly settled for a cheese toasty. Another 20 minutes passed, and the food started to arrive—if you can even call it food. My "cheese toasty" was nothing like the description on the menu. It was supposed to be a medley of mature Cheddar, Gouda, and Emmental, with béchamel sauce on toasted farmhouse bread. What I got was a sad, cold slice of basic Hovis bread with barely any cheese and an overwhelming amount of béchamel sauce, which made it soggy. The sandwich hadn’t even been grilled properly—it was cold before it even made it to the table. This monstrosity was nearly £8, and it came with a wilted side salad that had clearly been sitting out in the warmth for far too long. As if that wasn’t bad enough, my colleagues’ burgers were burnt to a crisp yet somehow still cold in the middle. The Karaage sticky chicken was slimy and unappetizing. To top it off, the water glasses had lipstick marks on them, the tables were filthy, and the toilets looked like they hadn’t been cleaned in ages. The bar staff did ask how everything was, but at that point, we just wanted to leave. Honestly, it wasn’t their fault—they were just doing their job. But the chefs and management need to seriously listen to the endless bad reviews. If you can’t make a proper toasty, then don’t offer one on the menu. And if you’re going to serve a festive menu, at least make sure you can follow through with it. This was a total disappointment, and I will never return. An embarrassment of a British pub.
