Very disappointed with the food and the service. Worst moules marinieres I ever had with no cream garlic sauce either. We wanted to buy a bottle of wine and were told that it was not possible and that the wine had to be bought in a carafe! Never heard his before!? Service was really bad, they really need to train the staff. The bill was £150 for 2 really not worth it. Will not visit again sadly.

I read several mixed reviews on TripAdvisor, some of which were terrible, but i was excited to find out for myself. I am glad we did. The food was absolutely delicious. I love a small menu with limited options because it's usually a good sign that each dish is done very well. In this case, that would seem to be true. I loved every bite, and there were no disappointments (except it being socially unacceptable to lick your plate clean). The drinks were very grown up, not much fan fare, but equally as delicious as the food. The service was wonderful, attentive, fun, and friendly wait staff. Simple food done very well. Excellent visit.

This beautiful.old hotel has been a place I have loved for over 60 years. However I took my family for a meal there last night. The menu was very limited and expensive we struggled to find what we wanted from a choice of only 5 main courses. The food was mostly very nice but the service was slack and we waited a long time for a gin and tonic and longer for the food. Its very sad to say but I won't go back.

Excellent food location and service in the centre of Rye. I had a dinner with my girlfriend and I was pleasantly surprised how good the food and service was. Fantastic service and the dining area is very stylish and has excellent design. The menu is varied with so many choices for all different dietary requirements. The surf and turf was the same price as the separate gambas and steak mains added together and only came with 3 (albeit delicious) prawns. I suspect you may get more prawns if you ordered then separately. Great wine and cocktails as its part of the George In Rye which has a full bar. Highly recommended the Devon crab if its on the menu. Oysters are fresh and also delicious. I would recommend making a reservation to ensure you get a table.

We had a lovely meal here on Saturday- the service is very good and nothing too much trouble. The peppered squid tasted delicious and was very fresh - the fish chowder is also extremely tasteful. We ate as a table of 6 for a celebration dinner. The food, overall, was very good - many of us had lobster (either half or whole) and these were all seen to be rather good! A couple of us had the steak - which was perfect in my case - and one burger as a main which was a 'healthy portion' to say the least. Starters and deserts were all pretty good as well (cheese selection can be recommended!) and, overall, the bill was very good value for money and quality. What slightly took us by surprise - genuinely - was that at the start of the evening we decided on pre-dinner drinks in the bar. A few of the group decided that a cocktail would be nice and, not liking the selection on offer in the bar menu, asked for a Pina Colda "Sorry, we don't do Pina Colda cocktails" was the reply. Really....? Nor a Mojito.... Now, I can understand some of the more esoteric cocktails not being available, but those two? Probably THE most common cocktails for everyday drinking? Sorry, but that is a rather obvious 'tick' missing off the list there I'm afraid - though it didn't spoil the night too much overall - but something to be aware of beforehand!

Went to The George Grill for Saturday dinner and the food was delicious, we shared the calamari and then I had the burger and my other half had the steak; it was all great. The only downside was the temperature of the restaurant, it was boiling hot and we were both roasting! Also we were sat next to each other at a table so it sort of felt like we were at a bus stop.

Read a review in a National newspaper and as a result joined their web mailing list. With planned holiday locally, we made the trip to Rye looking forward to an array of fresh fish options. Ate in the restaurant twice during a recent visit to Rye and was a little disappointed with the food the first evening, the sea bass came with potatoes that were swimming in grease, far too much oil or butter is used and they were inedible. The fish and chips was also a little greasy and the chips are more fries than chips. The starters of pate and shrimp pot were very good however and the cheese board was excellent. The second evening was better, the salads as starters were very good, the chateaubriand was a little under cooked but tasty. The seating is not the most comfortable with some bench style seating where you have pile up the pillows behind you if you want to sit back. The service was very good but the overall experience didn’t live up to expectations. Choose your table carefully for a comfortable evening.

The entrance to the George Hotel in High Street looks like a standard old-style hotel. The entrance in Lion Street, on the other hand, is quite different. You enter through a pretty courtyard (with olive trees), follow a pointing finger sign to 'Bar', go down a mysterious little staircase, and find yourself in a lively, buzzing pub/bistro. We stumbled across this on a Sunday evening, when we had almost given up hope of finding anywhere open for dinner, and how lucky we were to find such a good place! On a recent visit to Rye we felt a little peckish and decided to stop in at The George as the last time we visited we had a very enjoyable meal. We stood and waited at the bar for what seemed like at leats 5 minutes whilst the barman seemed to do his best to ignore us (he was not serving anyone else just tidying/cleaning glasses etc.) when he eventually came over we asked if it was possible to grab a table and were told in no uncertain terms that if we hadn’t booked then absolutely no chance of a table. We saw at least 2 tables empty and were not offered any opportunity to come back later or ask for a time when there may be a free table, very disappointing and clearly The George is a little to ‘up itself’ to consider one day it may need repeat customers or ‘walk ins’ to boost its profits! We visited on10 March 2019 for Sunday lunch. The restaurant is beautifully decorated, the staff attentive, the menu has you salivating and the food looks appetising. Unfortunately the food does not live up to its promises. It is flavourless and bland. My shrimp starter was served with burnt toast which I mentioned when the waiter collected the dishes. During our main course the waiter asked if everything was alright - I responded it was fine ie not exciting just ok. When payment was taken I explained to the waiter that the food was hugely disappointing - his response was he asked if everything was ok during the meal. With the bill there was an evaluation form to be completed and the promise that it would be responded to. I’m still waiting for a manager to contact me. The George is not cheap so I would expect the food to be good quality, full of flavour and cooked to a high standard ( the fat on my lamb was not rendered down).

This restaurant ticks all the right boxes for location and atmosphere. The staff were very friendly and helpful throughout the evening. This was especially the case when I was faced with my Lobster dish when I had to ask the waiter to wrestle out any edible meat.

Abject apologies! I had inadvertently reviewed the George pub at Lydd - never been there and this is the first time as a senior contributor I've committed this blunder.! Anyway...We had stayed once previously at The George but having enjoyed their generous afternoon tea, we'd never actually tried the restaurant. I cannot speak highly enough of both the quality and presentation of the food, equally matched by first-class professional service. For starters my wife chose the mussels whilst I enjoyed a 1/2 dozen Mersey oysters (small criticism - should have been accompanied by a couple of slices of brown bread!). To follow, my wife opted for the rump of lamb and I had the Dover sole - a good 500 grams worth - cooked to perfection in a rich butter sauce with capers and samphire. Desserts are homemade too - we recommend the pear tarte Tatin with its novel presentation. The entire meal was overseen by a very focussed, eagle-eyed maitre d' whose attention to detail was also very noticeable. Would definitely return - especially for the fish.

Have dined at the grill on a number of occasions while staying at The George. As usual, beautiful dinner - had to cod this time which was both delicate & delicious. Lovely rosemary chips & unusual minted peas. The only criticism is the awkwardness of negotiating all the individual bowls on the plate. The desert was divine & unusual - winter fruit sorbet with crab apples, apricots & poached pears which all tasted very christmassy & mulled. The cheeseboard selection was fantastic but I must again complain about the use of a wooden board to serve this on. Simply cannot be hygienic.

We always have a pre Christmas lunch out ahead of family time and decided on Rye as a change from Brighton and Old town, hastings. Chose The George as its been there years and several friends have recommended it. We would have happily spent the whole day there and if we didn’t have to get back, we would have tried to book in for the evening!

Stayed for a couple of nights at hotel. Had a meal at the grill. Really lovely. The food was good but the service received was excellent. Plenty of really well trained staff. Nothing was too much trouble. Fantastic. Will come again real soon

Reserved a few hours in advance via Open Table, which worked perfectly. Straight to main courses of lamb rump & rib-eye steak - both cooked as ordered. The only thing left on our plate was the tomato vine stalk...

We visited The George Grill last night for my husband’s birthday with friends after hearing good reviews. We were not disappointed. A very warm welcome, followed by willingly delaying our table time so we could enjoy a drink in the bar. Lovely surroundings and very good service throughout. The food was excellent. Fresh oysters, the best Moule Mariniere I’ve ever had (beautiful sauce, fresh, juicy moule), perfectly cooked lamp rump with truffle mash and fine quality steak (onglet and rib-eye). Really first rate. Will definitely return. Thank you.

My partner and I love this restaurant. It punches well above its weight and the food, wine, ambiance and service when combined all make for a truly memorable dining experience.

We ate at The George on the first night of our stay in Rye due to friends highly recommending it. We ordered medium ‘Onglet’ steaks but they were tough, charred & very well done. The rest of the meal was only mediocre so were v disappointed. We were given a small discount & they did offer to cook us another but we declined as we didn’t want another wait. I know everybody can’t get it right every time. Hopefully a one off experience!

You don't really anticipate perfection either in a pub or High Street hotel but I would certainly return here. We had booked lunchtime on a Sunday and were efficiently shown to our seats which were comfortable in a spacious and warm restaurant. The waitress was very knowledgeable about the menu and also helpful over the choice of beers. The menu is based on seafood and steak and there are many options. I can certainly recommend the Rye Bay scallops which were some of the best (if not the best) that I have tried and all perfectly cooked. You will need fries with the dish to fill you up. The creme brûlée sweet was also very good but not quite up to the memorable main course. Overall a relaxing time with great food and ambiance which makes this a destination restaurant. The bill for 5 came to around £140 which, although not cheap, represents good value for the quality of food served.

Always enjoy dinner at The George. Its quite expensive but the food is simple but high quality. Fish or steak prepared to perfection. Menu quite small but prefer that as freshness and seasonality guarenteed.

We popped in on the off-chance there was a free table on the night before the firework evening. Whilst the town was really quiet, there was a real buzz in here, a sign of something good we hoped.

My husband & myself had a very nice meal in The George Grill & it was delicious. My husband had the celeriac soup but I didn’t want a starter. We then shared a chateaubriand with a nice bottle of wine. The chateaubriand was cooked to perfection along with plenty of cherry tomatoes on the vine, fried onion rings & a tub of chips each. We didn’t have a dessert as we were both so full. The waitress was very attentive without being intrusive. A very nice meal with a nice ambience. Well done to all concerned.

Excellent atmosphere and meal. The service was really good and prompt. We stuck to sea food, both choosing moules for the first course, followed by Dover Sole for my wife, and battered cod for me which was the best I've ever had. Neither of us could manage a dessert! A few glasses of excellent wine and entertaining conversation with the couple at the adjacent table made for a lovely evening!

6 of us stopped for a fish and chip lunch, costing £111, we should have kept walking. £15.95 for a box of poorly cooked fish and chips, £2 for a tiny pot of mushy peas and 50p for a sachet of ketchup. The food was greasy, the fish had not been prepared properly, nobody finished their meal. The food took 15 minutes to arrive, so we had the opportunity to sit around and soak up the ambience, in a rubbish strewn picnic area whilst Katy Perry blasted out at full volume. On a more positive note, the customer service was at least in keeping with the food and surroundings. The staff were rude, when we picked up 2 of our boxes from the counter, we were told to “wait until we I’ve finished putting them all out”. I would eat literally anywhere before I went here again.

Were visiting Rye after spending a couple of days in Hastings. Found Globe Inn Marsh when searching for gluten free menus. Really varied menu and the food was absolutely delicious. Our waitress was really knowledgeable about gluten free options and was very friendly. The decor was really quirky and it was really relaxing inside. It is clearly a very popular restaurant, such a shame we live so far away!
