Fantastic pub well worth visiting, especially on a Sunday - the portions are very generous and the cost is far from unreasonable. Lovely visit, attentive staff, great atmosphere. Group of six friends, three couples (one local, two less so) and are often walking in the area as it's a great mid-point. We shall definitely be back next time we are around Ashbourne.

My daughter and I visited here for lunch whilst staying in Ashbourne. On a positive note the staff were very friendly and welcoming and my daughter's meal was fine, however my meal left a lot to be desired. I ordered baked cod with homemade parsley sauce but it arrived with a very unpleasant tasting cheese sauce not parsley. To make matters worse the veg had not been properly drained so my plate was swimming in water. The waitress was very apologetic and took it back to the kitchen but then returned saying that unfortunately there was nothing they could do as the chef said "that's the way our parsley sauce comes"! (Not sure what that was supposed to mean?) I was asked if I'd like to choose something else, which I did, and ordered the homemade steak and ale pie. This was slightly better although it did not have the rich gravy I was expecting (also watered down by wet veg) and by the time it arrived my daughter had pretty much finished her meal so we ended up eating separately rather than having lunch together. The pie was 45p cheaper than the fish so I was given that back, however I wasn't offered anything by way of compensation for the original meal being inedible. Very disappointing.

Me and my partner came here straight after camping for the first time in the Peak District, when we arrived it was very empty but it picked up extremely quick and we know exactly why! The pub itself is a little worn down and looks very rough round the edges but the food was INCREDIBLE! The portion sizes were huge, food came out piping hot and the staff couldn't do enough for the both of us, it is such a hidden gem and I would happily drive down from Leicestershire just for this pub alone!

What an experience that was...... I stayed at the George and dragon hotel for 1 night after a full day of being in centre of Ashbourne as the reviews seemed very good I just wanted a shower, a pint and some food after all day being in Ashbourne town. The rooms were just what I expected clean and just had the basics not very modern just ideal due to location and what I wanted just to get my head down. I went down to the bar after a shower and the had a Guinness, it was excellent, let me also point out all staff were welcoming and friendly from arrival to checking out. After a pint I decided to eat, so order a pie veg and mash ,1 hour later I still had not received any food, so i spoke to staff behind the bar and they said there must of been an error so will get right on to it for me as being a hotel guest it wasn't a problem. Harley behind the bar made up for it and ordered me a free Guinness within 5 minutes of the reorder the food came out, which I felt was fast for a pie, but it wasn't a pie, it was a chilli which I never ordered ,so Harley went back and again reordered my food. 20 minute’s later the food arrived, it looked good ,homemade veg and mash and at first i thought the pie was good but when I cut into the middle it was luke warm ,so when Harley came over to ask how my food was I told him not hot ,so he refunded me my money back for the meal ,he was a good lad well mannered but what put my off was the swearing and raised voices coming from the kitchen, moaning about i think potentially staying over due to the kitchen shutting late due to I take it my food not arriving. They even had to put music on to cover up the raised voices which everyone in the pub area could hear. It was a shame really, as I need to travel to Ashbourne every 6 weeks and due to location and food reviews thought this was the one.. One other thing.....I could not pick up the free wifi in my room but could in the bar, also the bed side light bulb holder was broken and just kept flashing on and off, also the towel rail was nearly hanging off the wall all the raw plugs were showing. I honesty think I was just unlucky but unfortunately I shall not be returning, Staff were great welcoming and friendly, but the swearing and shouting from within the kitchen area from a customers point of view was unacceptable. Sorry guys

Not a great start to be told we would have to leave our bikes in an unsecured patio area which meant we had to remove wheels. Eventually put the bikes in a store room. Food, drink and rooms were all ok. This place doesn't provide breakfast so we were recommended a cafe over the road which didn't open til 9AM. Hence, we couldn't vacate the room by 10AM, much to the annoyance of room service.

**Review of The George and Dragon, Ashbourne** I recently stayed at The George and Dragon in Ashbourne from June 13th to June 15th, and unfortunately, my experience was quite disappointing. Room Condition and Cleanliness: The condition of Room 2 left much to be desired. The decor was outdated and in need of significant improvement. The walls were covered in numerous dirty stains and marks, which was quite off-putting. While the bedding, toilet, sink, and shower were clean, the overall cleanliness of the room was unacceptable. There were cobwebs in the corners, dirty marks around the light switch, and the inside of the door was covered in greasy dirt. I initially thought the door had an ingrained stain, but it turned out to be a layer of filth that could be wiped off with water, as shown in a video I recorded. Service: I was unable to find any staff on the day of my checkout, which meant I had to leave my keys at the bar and couldn't address my concerns in person. After emailing the management about the issues, I received a response acknowledging the problems but basically saying that as they were cheaper than anywhere else what did I expect. Then offering only a 50% discount on a future food bill as compensation. This gesture did not adequately address the discomfort and inconvenience I experienced during my stay. Value for Money: While the hotel does price itself lower than some other options in the area, such as Travelodge, this does not excuse the lack of basic cleanliness. Even budget accommodations should meet a minimum standard of hygiene. Overall Experience: I had stayed at The George and Dragon two years ago and had a positive experience, which made this recent stay even more disappointing. The level of cleanliness was far below what I would expect from any hotel, regardless of its price point. Given the state of the room and the inadequate response from management, I cannot recommend staying here until significant improvements are made. In summary, my stay at The George and Dragon was marred by poor cleanliness and inadequate customer service. Until the management addresses these issues, I would advise looking elsewhere for accommodation in Ashbourne.

The portions were absolutely MASSIVE. So massive that I suffered from extreme stomach pains and constipation afterwards. Not to mention the ruthless diarrhoea i heard my friend experiencing in the stall next to me which caught up to me once I got home. I got the loaded chips, and in all honesty the chips didn't taste like chips, the chilli didn't taste like chilli and the cheese didn't taste like cheese. Great location, right in the market place. Short walk or bike ride from Tissington trail & loads of other lovely walks. The room (2) probably needs updating, but for the price it had everything we needed, & was clean, with a comfy bed, powerful shower, tea making facilities etc. We decided to give the restaurant a try & wow, really glad we did. We had the large fries with chili & melted cheese. Such huge portions, we wished we had shared, just as a member of staff (Harley) suggested.( & we are big eaters) Harleys expertise with the cocktails was impressive. A bit like Tom Cruise in Cocktail 😆The wife loved the vanilla liquor one. Would have been 5* if the room was updated. But would definitely return again.

Walked into this pub and the staff just stared at me. There was no ‘Hello’ or ‘Can I help you?’, ‘Would you like a table or a drink?’ We found ourselves a table to the side of the room and I saw the lad behind the bar with a striped top on whisper to his friend then bluntly state ‘Yeah that table is reserved in 20 minutes.’ He then proceeded to glare at us. When we eventually found a table round the back nobody offered us a menu or spoke to us. There was only 12 food options across the whole menu and each was very highly priced at £16-£18 for things like a fish and chips or a pie. We decided if nobody was going to speak politely or offer good service here then we would go to a different pub. Luck had it that we found a lovely one just a short walk away.

Even though it was a Friday night as well 💖 We didn't try the food this time as we'd been walking in the Peak District and just wanted a quick pie and chips from the chippy opposite the pub (can definitely recommend also) and a lazy evening in the room. You've got everything you need in the room - tea and coffee with a little kettle, plenty of storage space for your things and a nice little bathroom. I love that you have a private entrance up into the room, so you don't have to travel through the bar. We'll definitely come back again. Next time we'll eat in! 😊🥰

We booked a specific table for 4 on a Monday evening for a family meal.On arrival to the pub and on time, we were told the table had been double booked and the local grocer had obviously been given priority over and after our booking!! .. The substitute table that was offered was very poor and inadequate....so we moved to the only other seating available which was a dark corner which previously housed the pool table. We ordered our drinks and the young waiter reeled off what we couldn't have on the menu!! Which was again disappointing. Once we had established what was left... We ordered our food... No starters just simple mains... So we waited and waited once the hour mark had passed... The over bearing and cocky young guy who was working behind the bar came over to our table and told us that the last cottage pie that one of our party had ordered had been dropped on the floor (probably been given to someone else more like) and no longer available!!So we ordered another replacement meal... We received our meals approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes after ordering them... which for a pub meal is very poor by anyone's standard, also taking into account that the pub was was not massively busy. Our bill was £64 and the same over exuberant young man laughed in my face when I asked if I was entitled to any discount for all of the mishaps on our visit to his pub.We have always liked the pub to be honest... But people change and so do standards unfortunately!!There are alot of good pubs and places to eat in Ashbourne... We are locals not tourists... So we will choose to eat elsewhere next time.A very disappointing evening.

Told after five minutes out choice not available .Ordered again then everyone's food was arriving before ours even though they came in after us. On questioning it was because WE had changed our order !!!! Staff unhelpful and rude insisting it was our fault even though they didn't have the food. Left in disgust and informed them the write up would not be good response was "wherever"

We visited today. The staff were all very welcoming and friendly. The atmosphere and decoration was inviting and comfortable. The food was tasty, filling and presented well. The steak pie was the best my partener has had for a long time. Highly recommend this excellent pub/restaurant and will definetly return.

Called here by chance and what a pleasant surprise. The food was absolutely gorgeous, excellent quality, plenty of it and really tasty. I had a roast beef dinner and my husband had the steak n ale pie, both were superb. The service was great and prices reasonable. We'll certainly call again when we're in the area. Thank you!

Called in on the off chance we could get a table for food. Very busy at 7 0’clock but we were lucky as we hadn’t booked, this is an option. I opted for the vegetarian wellington. I’m not veggie but it sounded tasty and it was. We also ordered gammon and steak pie. We all enjoyed our meals at typical pub prices. Would definitely recommend and will go back if in the area. Friendly customers and staff.

Very busy pub with fantastic excellent food and service. Popped in Sat 16 Nov for dinner and was not disappointed. We both had Beuof Beuginion with horseradish mash. Rich and hot with creamy mash. No seasoning required. Was perfect. Will be back in Fri for Steak n ale pie and Pork Belly if any left.

We visited tonight for a meal, myself, my husband, my son and his girlfriend. We are from North East England so went on recommendations from Trip Adviser. The meal itself was nice so well done kitchen staff. The bar staff were also helpful and friendly apart from one young woman aged approx 18 with shoulder length dark hair. She practically threw the meal down at us, no pleasantries. She looked unhappy to be working there. Impolite and quite dismissive and preoccupied. This spoiled our meal. Please could someone discuss her attitude towards paying customers. Thank you

Went for dinner with 2 kids on a Monday night. Made very welcome on entrance. We had steak, lamb shank and spare ribs. All very tasty and cooked to perfection. Really friendly bar staff. Feel like everyone knows everyone there so must be a really good local pub.

Had a very nice lunch, soup of the day was french onion and was very good local ham and mustard sandwiches were also very good the only negative was being charged £3.95 for an additional topping on my dons baked potato, he wanted a portion of tuna as well as the cheese and beans and I think this seemed a bit much as usually additional toppings are only about £2-£2.50. Nonetheless he enjoyed it. The atmosphere was really good as was the beer and the young bar staff were enthusiastic friendly and very helpful. Would definitely recommend.

Just popped in with my wife, aunty and uncle and was told food would be at least an hour as a table of eleven had arrived just before us. We decided to stay and it turned out to be a decision well made. I particularly respected the fact that the pub seemed to be short staffed. But the chef continued to inform diners on the delay as she delivered the food personally. The smell of the other diners food had us salivating but was it worth the wait well ............. absolutely it was. The portions were huge just like our smiles and our bellies afterwards. I personally have to mention that the Cajun chicken was by far the best I have ever tasted and well worth a trip from Devon to Derbyshire just for dinner. I also have to mention how calmly and wonderfully the bar staff coped with a very, very busy service. A special mention to the young man that took his coat off and started to serve even when he wasn't working, well done.

Hefty portions, lovely quality food at a competitive price. Dogs were very welcome. Only problem was we were given a really small table for 4. Couldn’t eat properly as elbows got in the way. Therefore only 4 stars. NB parking outside but it’s pay and display. £2.50 for 2 hrs

Great vibes in the pub. Got there as they opened and the hospitality was fantastic. I ordered a coffee and they got the coffee machine up and running straight away. Service was friendly and coffee was very nice and affordable. Came with a nice biscuit as well. We just used the hotel as a pub as a meeting point to start our stag do. There was a couple ordering food which looked great also. Beer was great and there was darts and a foosball table! 10/10 establishment

Fantastic cafe, the icing on the cake (no pun intended) being the birds feeding next to the window. The staff are friendly and efficient and the the food is of a good standard and reasonably priced. I can't understand the few negative reviews, maybe some folk have unfeasibly high standards/expectations?
