Great location, right in the market place. Short walk or bike ride from Tissington trail & loads of other lovely walks. The room (2) probably needs updating, but for the price it had everything we needed, & was clean, with a comfy bed, powerful shower, tea making facilities etc. We decided to give the restaurant a try & wow, really glad we did. We had the large fries with chili & melted cheese. Such huge portions, we wished we had shared, just as a member of staff (Harley) suggested.( & we are big eaters) Harleys expertise with the cocktails was impressive. A bit like Tom Cruise in Cocktail 😆The wife loved the vanilla liquor one. Would have been 5* if the room was updated. But would definitely return again.

Popped in here for a late Sunday dinner as nowhere else in the area served food past 5pm. What a little gem this place is. Good choice on menus, specials and 2 for £12 cocktails every day all day! We all had a roast dinner, you can have 2 or 3 different meats for a couple of extra quid and my goodness, this basically gets you a 2 for 1 dinner! Portions are huge and food was delicious. Just what we were after. Thank you, highly recommend

Walked into this pub and the staff just stared at me. There was no ‘Hello’ or ‘Can I help you?’, ‘Would you like a table or a drink?’ We found ourselves a table to the side of the room and I saw the lad behind the bar with a striped top on whisper to his friend then bluntly state ‘Yeah that table is reserved in 20 minutes.’ He then proceeded to glare at us. When we eventually found a table round the back nobody offered us a menu or spoke to us. There was only 12 food options across the whole menu and each was very highly priced at £16-£18 for things like a fish and chips or a pie. We decided if nobody was going to speak politely or offer good service here then we would go to a different pub. Luck had it that we found a lovely one just a short walk away.

We were passing through Ashbourne, looking for somewhere to eat. What attracted us to this pub was the fact that they had the menu displayed outside the pub, and the pub looked quite welcoming. Upon entering, we weren't disappointed. We sat at a table and quite quickly given a menu by a member of the staff, who also informed us that the specials board offered some additional meals. We made our choices and soon presented with some wonderful food. I would say that the portions were very generous as well as tasting fresh and hot. If we pass through Ashbourne again, we'll certainly be eating here again. Thank you 😊

We stayed here on Friday for our 10th wedding anniversary and it was absolutely lovely! We'd got room 5, which overlooks the market place where you can park when you stay. The chap who greeted us and showed us the room was lovely, very friendly. The room was lovely, clean and tidy and the bed was super comfy. We had a brilliant night's sleep! Even though it was a Friday night as well 💖 We didn't try the food this time as we'd been walking in the Peak District and just wanted a quick pie and chips from the chippy opposite the pub (can definitely recommend also) and a lazy evening in the room. You've got everything you need in the room - tea and coffee with a little kettle, plenty of storage space for your things and a nice little bathroom. I love that you have a private entrance up into the room, so you don't have to travel through the bar. We'll definitely come back again. Next time we'll eat in! 😊🥰

We booked a specific table for 4 on a Monday evening for a family meal.On arrival to the pub and on time, we were told the table had been double booked and the local grocer had obviously been given priority over and after our booking!! .. The substitute table that was offered was very poor and inadequate....so we moved to the only other seating available which was a dark corner which previously housed the pool table. We ordered our drinks and the young waiter reeled off what we couldn't have on the menu!! Which was again disappointing. Once we had established what was left... We ordered our food... No starters just simple mains... So we waited and waited once the hour mark had passed... The over bearing and cocky young guy who was working behind the bar came over to our table and told us that the last cottage pie that one of our party had ordered had been dropped on the floor (probably been given to someone else more like) and no longer available!!So we ordered another replacement meal... We received our meals approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes after ordering them... which for a pub meal is very poor by anyone's standard, also taking into account that the pub was was not massively busy. Our bill was £64 and the same over exuberant young man laughed in my face when I asked if I was entitled to any discount for all of the mishaps on our visit to his pub.We have always liked the pub to be honest... But people change and so do standards unfortunately!!There are alot of good pubs and places to eat in Ashbourne... We are locals not tourists... So we will choose to eat elsewhere next time.A very disappointing evening.

Our food was delicious and hearty. I was happy to see that this pub offered a vegan option which was very tasty. Couldn’t really fault the food and decor. The pub was participating in the eat out to help out scheme and was slightly overwhelmed by the number of visitors. As such, our food took ages to come out. I would not recommend going Monday-Wednesday during august if you are in a rush. However, we really enjoyed it when it did arrive so they had obviously paid attention to detail even though they were stressed.

The meal itself was nice so well done kitchen staff. The bar staff were also helpful and friendly apart from one young woman aged approx 18 with shoulder length dark hair. She practically threw the meal down at us, no pleasantries. She looked unhappy to be working there. Impolite and quite dismissive and preoccupied. This spoiled our meal. Had a very nice lunch, soup of the day was french onion and was very good local ham and mustard sandwiches were also very good the only negative was being charged £3.95 for an additional topping on my dons baked potato, he wanted a portion of tuna as well as the cheese and beans and I think this seemed a bit much as usually additional toppings are only about £2-£2.50. Just popped in with my wife, aunty and uncle and was told food would be at least an hour as a table of eleven had arrived just before us. We decided to stay and it turned out to be a decision well made. I particularly respected the fact that the pub seemed to be short staffed. But the chef continued to inform diners on the delay as she delivered the food personally. The smell of the other diners food had us salivating but was it worth the wait well ............. absolutely it was. The portions were huge just like our smiles and our bellies afterwards. I personally have to mention that the Cajun chicken was by far the best I have ever tasted and well worth a trip from Devon to Derbyshire just for dinner. I also have to mention how calmly and wonderfully the bar staff coped with a very, very busy service. A special mention to the young man that took his coat off and started to serve even when he wasn't working, well done.

Stopped at George and Dragon in ashbourne weekend of 5th January 2019 and i have to say what an absolute suprise. On arrival checked in and was shown to the room. Nicely furnished, not a large room but very clean and extremely comfy bed. The George and Dragon dont offer breakfast but this is no problem as there are a number of tea house and cafes close to the property and this was reflected in the price of the accomadation which I though was fair for the location. As the property is in the market square there is no parking on site however there is free parking abiut 5-7 minutes walk away or 1 minutes walk away like what we did is £5.50 for 24 hours. This is a dog friendly pub which is clearly adverised on the website and around the pub which was no problem for us as we are dog lovers. The food is some of the best homemade food we have had. Its not a large menu but should have something for even the most fussy eaters. The food is all fresh homemade and hot and if you you want to eat here I would definately reserve a table to guarantee your seat. The staff are very polite and friendly and we would have no hesitation in recomending this venue for both an overnight stop and for a venue to eat at. Its just good pub grub done well.

I can't comment on the food as we only called in for a drink on a nice sunny afternoon, Wednesday 5th September. The girl/young lady behind the bar greeted us with a most welcoming smile, she was polite, professional but had a warm nature about her. We have stayed in many expensive hotels and eaten in posh restaurant's where receptionists and waitresses could learn a lot from her how to treat your customers. We had some really well kept real ale and the ladies had a couple of excellent artisan gins all at a reasonable price. We saw her also deal with some other customers who we presume were staying in accommodation linked to the pub, they were also treated to the same welcome so their stay thus started in a most positive way. Good pub, good staff member !!

I had steak and ale pie and loved it also chips which were proper thick ones. So overall fantastic place to enjoy a lovely meal.

We wanted somewhere within easy walking distance of where we were staying & where my husband could have a local brew. I needed to carbo load before a running event ( any excuse to eat pasta) and the George and Dragon ticked all the boxes. I reserved a table having read previous reviews and we were met by a friendly hostess and made to feel very welcome all evening. The food was cooked to order and arrived hot but not dry from sitting under a heat lamp. The portions were ample and very tasty. I regret not returning the following evening for food and would certainly return should I visit Ashbourne again. Oh and by the way the chips were to die for as was the Saffron Gin which assisted my running the following morning.

When we first walked in I thought we had made a terrible mistake. There is no restaurant, you eat in the bar as the pub in small. We sat in cramped conditions- we had to move the table to get in and out and I nearly knocked over the man at the next table when I tried to put my coat on. The place itself needs refurbishing, with torn seating and chipped paint, food on the carpet, etc.

The George and dragon catered my hubbys birthday meal for 26 people, the food was excellent & the service was even better, friendly welcoming staff who couldn't do enough for us, we will definitely be back when we are next in the area.

Was staying at the hotel and managed to get a table (would recommend booking even if staying as seems very busy/popular). A well thought out menu, plenty for my vegetarian daughter to choose from - although a shame that no "specials" were veg-friendly. More than ample portions, none of us could even contemplate pudding after a fine 2 courses. Service quick and friendly, food well presented and good value for money

Popped in for lunch with 2 hungry toddlers and our dog. Received very warm welcome and the food was great quality. Kids had 2 burgers which were devoured and adults had fish super and a dragon burger. Both excellent. Fish was particularly noteworthy. 2 kids meals, 2 adults meals all of which were very generous in portion size and drinks for us all under £40. What's not to like. Would recommend.

I say pub grub only because it's a very busy pub on the market square and the environment is as you might expect; but the food and service belies this.

We had been to Ye Olde Vaults as we had just arrived in town, and I wanted a trout. "No food here" they said at the Vaults, and recommended the George. "No trout" I was told, so I had fish pie. Delicious and very hot. I've had better - and worse. My wife's veg meal was good too.

We chose this small hotel for lunch to have a family get together to exchange presents prior to Christmas. We were warmly greeted by the lovely Emma who was so attentive the whole time we were there. We selected meals from the Christmas menu. All the food was brought to the table hot which made a pleasant change. The beef bourguignon was particularly good, plenty of tender meat and a rich gravy. Again thanks to Emma & would definitely return, next time to spend more time to explore Ashbourne.
