Stayed for 3 nights while visiting family in the area. Bed and breakfast was very good, clean, well presented ensuite room. Room 2, no noise from the pub below at all. The breakfast was superb. We ate in the restaurant twice for dinner, there's a good choice of specials and a great selection of pub meals. Very good quality of food throughout our stay. Highlight of the George though has to be the great staff, everyone friendly and professional, Jack was an excellent host. Can't recommend enough.

I booked a table to celebrate our anniversary, having met there 10 years ago. When we got there we were warmly welcomed and shown to a table that had ‘happy anniversary’ bunting over it, the young staff were excited for us and took photos which was sweet. Then we got the food, I was just hoping for decent pub grub, it we were both knocked out by the quality of the food and the skills of the chef. Thank you very much to everyone at the George for making it such a special evening!

We stayed for 2 nights B+B and also ate dinner here on one of the nights. Altogether it was very enjoyable, made more so by our host Helen, who was so very welcoming and warm. All the staff were helpful. It's a very nice, traditional pub great for drinks, but the food here is exceptional and highly recommended. Our breakfasts were of the highest standard I've had in a long time, all freshly cooked to order of course, and a proper English with all the trimmings including black pudding. Our room was comfortable with extra touches like water and tissues that make it so much nicer. The pub is siutated on a busy road, so if like me you're used to quiet surroundings at night then do bring your earplugs! I hate using them but my second night's sleep was much better when I did.

We live fairly locally but had never been to the George before. The outside is pretty with colourful hanging baskets. We went on a very hot Friday and were warmly welcomed by the landlady who showed us out to the courtyard garden as we had our dog with us. The other staff were also friendly. The menu choice was good for both hot and cold food. We had a tuna mayo sandwich and a fish goujon ciabatta which both came with some chips and salad garnish. We will definitely go back for a main meal at some point in the future.

Warm welcome, lovely setting and delicious food. The host made a point of checking on all the tables and couldn't have made us feel more welcomed. Food was delicious but our daughter's seabass was the winner by far. Multiple gluten free options that all sounded great. A winner, we'll be back

Wonderful food, especially the specials which change each week. The service is great and very friendly. Our family eats there quite often and is our number one restaurant in the area. I would highly recommend it.

We had driven down from Scotland and still had further to travel. We dropped in on the off chance we could have some food to help us on our way. It was the evening of bank holiday Friday and unsurprisingly it was fully booked. Thankfully, we were found a table and served a quick meal. The goat cheese tart was especially delicious.

If I had a pound for every time I have driven past the George…. Had Sunday lunch today and I can’t fault the place brilliant staff great welcome and a very much needed relaxed meal with fantastic food. Well done guys we will be calling in more often 10/10

We first called into the George in October this year for lunch on the way to a family holiday on the south coast. The welcome we got on that occasion was so memorable and the food so good that we thought we would try and book a Christmas meal. What a fantastic choice we made. Helen and the team went overboard to accommodate us, from the minute we walked through the door we felt so welcome. The meal itself was fantastic. We cannot comment negatively about anything except the brussels sprouts but then its a standard Christmas joke. In reality the sprouts were great. The locals were friendly and we had a good banter after our meal. My wife commented "dont tell my mum but that is probably the best christmas dinner ive ever had" and the roasties were " to die for" The ambience of the George is perfect, music you can hear if you hear a special song but not so loud that you have to raise your voice to hold a conversation. Accomodation is spacious and comfortable and we had a great nights sleep. I must also mention the breakfast. Again, up there with the best we've had. It takes a special team to make a pub special and the George has got that one spot on. We look forward to visiting again soon Jim & Deb

The George was warm and welcoming and the staff were very helpful. We chose two courses from the Wednesday fixed price menu at £17.70 per head which we thought was good value for money. The food was very tasty and we enjoyed our meal. The choice of ale was limited but my husband had Guinness which was fine and I had a half of a locally brewed beer. When the bill arrived it was for over £65 and I could see the mistake immediately as we had been charged for the 2 fixed price two-course meals plus another 2 starters. I politely said that I thought the bill was wrong at which point it was recalculated. I have to say I found two things really disappointing - the chap behind the bar was very offhand about making a mistake with the bill and offered no apology at all. I also think Guinness at £6 a pint is very pricey...we don't pay that in London pubs.

We visited here for my father in law's birthday. Helen had put banners up on the wall and on the tables for us when we arrived. The food was good value for money and delicious. The service was outstanding and nothing was too much trouble. Would highly recommend the pub to any of our friends .We were accommodated at short notice as well, less than 24 hours.

Good quality food which was fairly priced, the staff were friendly and welcoming and the pub had a nice atmosphere. Would recommend.

A lot of the items on the menu they did not have so had to change our original orders, what we got was good, dessert was lovely but coffee they said they had alternative milk but it was out of date by 2 weeks so in the end did not go with the coffee. The wait was unacceptable, no apology they were not busy but took a while for the food to arrive, we stayed as was chatting with family and they had recommended this pub so felt bad.

Our first visit to this cosy pub, the menu is extensive with all the usual pub favourites plus some ambitious-sounding specials. I chose the pan-fried venison which was amazing....tender, pink venison in a delicious sauce with bacon lardons, baby onions and mushrooms with dauphinoise potatoes....a huge helping but just couldn't resist eating it all!! Two of us had the duck breast on a bed of bubble and squeak, which was also yummy. These two dishes alone prove that the chef is way above average. The young staff were very attentive, quick and efficient which is often a rarity these days. So all in all a successful night out...just a shame that it was so damn hot that evening...we were anxious to get out and cool down. Will definitely return on a winter's evening and hope that the venison is still on the menu!

I hadn't been to this pub for at least 10 years...it may be 12...or even 15!. That clock was reset to zero last night when a group of us went there for dinner. And what a lovely experience it was, a few regulars, a decent number of diners for a Thursday night...and the bunch I was with. I'd say simple, reasonable priced pub grub but, there was another menu that I didn't see until after I'd ordered my food...I'll order off that menu next time ('cause those dishes looked even more fab)...Donyatt, I promise I won't leave it 10 years before my next visit!

Haven't eaten here I awhile and whilst the service is as good as usual, the quality is the food was disappointing compared to previous experiencesdining here. Had this Been my first time eating here, I'd not be keen to revisit.

The food was as you would expect from a village pub, if not a little unambitious with specials. The pub, for us was too brightly lit which didnt impart the ambience of an English pub and our table was positioned adjacent to the open kitchen door which also detracted from the general feeling of wellbeing. The food was fine and the staff efficient and polite.

Beautiful food in a warm and friendly setting. My parents who were celebrating their diamond anniversary were thrilled with the added bunting above the table and the warmth that they received from all staff. Having not really left their house for the last 18 months they wanted to go out to celebrate their 60 years married they felt totally spoilt and thoroughly enjoyed their meals. A huge thanks to the team for arranging photos of them and allowing flowers to be delivered for the table, as a family we are extremely grateful. Strongly recommend the food and hospitality.

We had 3 delicious courses here which included scallops, creamy mushrooms, sausage and mash, steak and sticky toffee pudding- all were without fault! Very friendly service and would definitely recommend!

Booked for dinner whilst staying nearby. Lovely old country pub serving homemade food. Still observing Covid precautions, so feels safe. Friendly greeting on arrival, quickly seated and drinks order taken. Had a good choice of dishes, including the usual pub classics, but also a tempting selection of specials, from which we chose the Steak Diane and the duck, both of which were excellent.Good selection of deserts too, the Lemon and Lime Cheesecake was particularly good.Would definitely recommend visiting, if in the area

After what seemed an age we finally returned to our favourite restaurant! Delicious dinner, friendly staff and perfect atmosphere.

A mixed bag really. We had read reviews so were confident in having a good experience.Staff were polite, we were shown into the back of the restaurant which was clearly the area for 'non' locals, the front bar area being a bit nicer.Our starter was laughable, we ordered halloumi chips with dip. When it arrived (we were sharing) we counted 6 chips! This worked out at approx. £1.10 per chip.My main course was okay, burger was fresh and cooked well, chips were overcooked but okay. My wife's main course of chicken was under cooked but was rectified quickly and was very tasty.We didn't like the way it was strongly suggested when paying that we should tip for the hard working staff while the card machine was thrust in front of my wife. We would have left a tip but the minimum tip we were able to give was 10% on the card machine, this wasn't explained when putting us on the spot to leave a tip.Overall food was okay but certainly overpriced based on taste and quality.Pleasant staff in a a nice atmosphere though but please double the chips on your starter portion!

Fabulous food; the best chick pea curry I have ever had! My husband’s steak pie was full of meat and delicious. All home cooked too. Very friendly host who runs the place, young girl who took our drinks order had no idea what they sold and was very quiet and shy; hoping she was new?Fantastic dining experience and if we are in the area again it’s a must-stop for us!

Went here for a meal out with friends and wanted it to be lovely but sadly wouldn’t and couldn’t recommend. Scampi tiny and chips huge and very uninspiring, and £6 for a small creme brûlée served with a HUGE spoon. The waiting staff all looked about fourteen, terrified or confused and no smiles, and got my friends order wrong so the meals came at different times. The dessert board was plonked down in between me and my friend so we had to peer over it. Manager seemed friendly, but please, train your staff or bring in experienced ones and cook decent chips.

Driving home having tried 3 other pubs en route that were either closed or not serving food we arrived here at 2:05 expecting to be told we were too late to eat, but happily were told the kitchen could still do ciabatta with chips. We had fish finger ciabatta which was excellent. All the staff were really friendly and welcoming. It's a lovely pub with great atmosphere. Will definitely call again if we're back this way.

Took our daughter when she was visiting us from Hampshire, also went with our indoor bowls club for our Christmas meal both meals were really good. There were 24 of us for the Christmas meal so we were in a back room which was decorated for Christmas. We had 3 waitresses looking after us, so the service was very efficient.

Hadn't realised under new management and how much nicer the welcome was. As soon as we entered Helen welcomed us with a beaming smile and lovely words of welcome. It is one of the only pubs in the area apart from weatherspoons, that serve food on a Monday night. Rump steak cooked to perfection as ordered. Stilton sauce was a little runny for my liking but still extremely tasty. Delicious homemade onion rings. My friend had the gammon which was nearly as big as the plate but she was able to get a doggy bags. Superb syrup sponge pudding. Excellent attentive service and if we can get a table we will be back this Sunday to try out the roast dinner.

Apparently the George is under new management. I have no idea, but it was really very good. There was plenty of choice for our pregnant, vegetarian daughter and we and her carnivore husband had almost too much to choose from. Baked Camembert, squid and salmon and asparagus starters were delicious and the lamb shank with little lamb pie was scrumptious. The service was quick and efficient and we will definitely be returning.

New owns have really upped the menu choices and maintained good value. Decor is rather dated could do with a face lift.

This has become a regular Sunday lunch spot for me, my Aunt and my Lurcher! The food is wonderful, nothing is too much trouble for the staff . My Aunt’s small appetite is catered for, there are biscuits for the dog and the puddings are to die for....especially the Tiffin!! Highly recommended!

Booked here for a breakfast on New Years Day for my wife's birthday. Extremely good service and fantastic food. We have eaten here a few times in the evening aswell and weve always really enjoyed it, sometimes the wait has been a tad long due to how busy it has been but the staff have always communicated this well and busy is always a good sign of how good the food is. Highly recommend and look forward to our next visit.

Table booked for 7pm, taking my lovely mum out for a treat. We're given a table off of the main bar area which was fine. However, felt we were forgotten about for most of the evening. Nice young lad took our initial order then no one came back to the table for over 2hours. Not offered more drinks or to see if food was OK. Waited an hour for our main course after our starters, no one offered us the sweet menu either. As we asked for the bill a lady apologised for"forgetting about us". Didn't want to spoil the evening by complaining, as this was for my mum. We appreciated being offered a table with only 2 days notice but if it was to be a problem then I would have booked somewhere else. Food was good, company great but service below average. What a shame as our many other visits to this pub have always been excellent.Happy Christmas.

Went to the George for Sunday lunch with family. Nice ambiance, friendly staff and warm fire. Main courses were very good, lovely beef and Yorkshire puds, perfect chicken and great pork. Lots of vegetables on the plates, but even more served separately. Good selection of desserts which were well received. Thanks for a great lunch.

Thank you so much for hosting my 60th Birthday celebrations. We were a party of 28 who made menu choices prior to arriving which made it easier for us as a party and hopefully for the chef ! The food was excellent , top class meat it was hot and it all came out at the same time . The staff were fabulous and looked after us so well nothing was too much trouble I would highly recommend The George .

Having driven past probably 1000 times we met some fiends half way. Glad we did, great atmosphere, plenty of room yet busy, great food and good service. Not going to leave it another 1000 times.

Being a Vegetarian and trying to find a Sunday Roast Dinner that involved roast potatoes, vegetables, a meat substitute and a vegetarian friendly gravy seems to be virtually impossible. I spent a week phoning around locally to find a place to book. Every pub/restaurant I phoned offered a vegetarian meal but pretty much either a vegetable lasagna or something equally uninteresting. They must think Vegetarian’s don’t like a good old roast dinner too! However, I finally phoned The George at Donyatt. Spoke to the landlady, explained what we were looking for and pretty much nothing was too much trouble. So, she offered to use the Vegan burger off of their normal weekly menu (or vegetarian sausages if we preferred) as the meat replacement and to make a veggie gravy! Oh my God, it was amazing! And yet so difficult to find. So Vegetarian’s and Vegan’s if you want a flipping gurt lush roast dinner, give them a call and speak to the Landlady who is awesome. I will be back!

Lovely traditional pub with helpful service however was extremely disappointed with food as I ordered my steak medium rare and it came out still alive on the plate the other steak we ordered was asked to be medium also came out rare one was sent back for it to be return with the chips clearly been dumped back in the fryer resulting in no potato and just lumps of fat which completely but my partner of his food!!

We have been to this place a few times in recent weeks and the food is always very good but last evening we ordered a special of halibut, samphire and buttery, garlicy potatoes ....... absolutely delicious......beautiful fresh fish, expertly cooked.....food here is always well presented. We were very well looked after by a very nice and friendly lady. We've previously eaten here at lunchtime when it is generally very busy and we were lucky to have a table last evening, so know in future to book. Excellent......thank you.

I returned to this lovely village pub to have another steak meal, the reason being, the last one I had was so brilliant, that I wanted to see if they could do it again.

The George has established itself for providing first class meals. So we went along to sample their fare last Thursday having booked a table for lunch. Place almost full. Good sign. Great choice on the menu and specials' board. Was a little apprehensive at the many tables where people still seemed to be waiting. And waiting, And waiting. We were to join the queue. Over 20 minutes before our orders were taken. The food when it eventually arrived was excellent.

An average thursday, tried The George as heard under new ownership. Previously food had been great but knows it's step up..great choice, excellent value . They were turning people away as was fully booked ( not helped by two people hogging a table for 6).

I live in London and was taken to The George by relatives. Lots of interesting things to choose from on the menu and all the different things which we chose were well cooked and delicious. Friendly staff and good prices.

The George has changed hands several times in the past few years so the experience of dining there has been very variable. However, the present incumbents have really got to grips with what is needed in the area. Weekday lunches are good, with a special (cheaper) menu but with other, more normal options available. Evening meals are from an extensive, printed menu including the usual pub classics and "favourites" along with vegan and vegetarian options. There is also a comprehensive specials board. The quality is so good and the prices so reasonable, one needs to book a table for evening meals even in midweek! Great, friendly staff. A real find!

I have had lunch at The George three times over the past 5 years and have never been disappointed. Last time was three weeks ago and the posrk was fantastic. Good food, good value

I have a few benchmarks for assessing pubs or restaurants - one of these is the quality of the chips. I ordered the haddock goujons with chips and mushy peas whilst my friends had the excellent roast. It is some years since I have had chips as good as these - what a delight. I don't know how they are done, something about double or triple fried I believe. It has always been a mystery to me why more establishments don't take this trouble, it can make or break a good meal. And the goujons were delicious too!

Went here for Sunday lunch to celebrate our anniversary. Lovely food and good atmosphere. The stuff were great. There is also a nice enclosed patio area too.

Visited The George for the first time yesterday with friends. We were made very welcome, served very efficiently, the food was so good that not a morsel was left. Four of us chose the two course light lunch, options were good, portions generous and the price very reasonable. All in a very relaxed atmosphere.

Eat traditional pub meals of burger and fish and chips a few times on holiday. Food was excellent, staff friendly, prices reasonable.

Great traditional pub with great food and local beer excellent value for money. Friendly staff and very attentive, the specials board has something for everyone gluten free and vegetarian options. Will be visiting again in the near future.

What a gem of a place, a lovely English Country Pub, with equally good rooms, and first class food. We stayed 3 nights for bed and breakfast, and also had 3 exceptional evening meals, Venison, Hake and Ribeye steak, all cooked to perfection. We fully recommend The George, and all the staff, we had a great stay. Steven and Helen have done a great job in the last 12 months since taking over. Thanks if things are quiet ask Helen to play the piano, her grandmothers favourite song, really funny or if you prefer a bit of classical, ask for Debussy’s Clair de Lune. Fantastic.

Called in on the way back from the coast. Friendly welcome, couple of good real ales and extensive menu. We all went for the burgers which were excellent. See you on our next trip.

Just stopped for a roast dinner with my son and it was absolutely delicious ! Really tasty, plenty of veg, reasonable price, quick service and I would not hesitate to recommend. I would definitely come back here to eat again next time I’m in the area. Well done chef ! Superb

We are local to the area and have heard good things about this pub so thought we would try it for some lunch. We parked in the car park out the back and were swiftly told rudely by someone from the kitchen to move our car back and 'maybe to the side a little' with horrendous tone. The car park was not busy (only 3 other cars) and did not have designated spaces. We did as asked and went to get into the car when the person from the kitchen came out again and yelled 'jesus' at us. Not a great first impression and not something we stand for in this business. We decided we no longer wanted to lunch here. I went in and told a lovely lady behind the bar what we had experienced and the implications this had, in this case a loss of customers. She was very apologetic and said she would tackle the issue which was much better service! Very disappointed by this.

What a find! Highly recommended. Fantastic steak & ale pie, really nice people. Service beyond the norm.

We have visited this pub twice and could not fault the food. There is a good choice for all tastes and it is very reasonably priced. The staff are very friendly as are the owners.

A traditional looking pub situated on the main road through this pleasant village, it consists of one L-shaped room internally as well as a small lean-to conservatory extension, and a pleasant courtyard garden with lots of hanging baskets and so forth. The young barman was friendly and helpful, as was the waitress who brought our food.
