Wow, I'm surprised places like this still exist. Cold, unwelcoming bar area, staff that are disinterested, miserable, incapable and unsafe. Can't keep cask beer unless you enjoy drinking vinegar. Very basic overpriced food. Service with a grimace. Thank the lord I hadn't booked accommodation here, I can only imagine... The thing is, the other pub in the village at the falls, wow, amazing place. Go there!

When I booked this room several weeks ago, I had a very helpful and pleasant conversation with the owner and we were really looking forward to our visit as the reviews were so good. My husband and I tested positive for Covid yesterday and are unwell. I tried to ring this pub 10 times with no answer, emailed them and sent a message through Facebook to say that it was not appropriate for us to come as we were infectious. We had no response. I was not given the information that we had to cancel seven days prior to our stay or we would be charged. I was going to ask if we could change the date for when we were no longer infectious. The money was taken out of my account today, with no response to my email or message. I have just managed to get through to the pub to be told quite rudely we could not change the date and the money had been taken out today as we have not given 7 days notice. The lady I was speaking to repeated several times “There is no Covid” which we find bizarre. It is on the news several times a week and thousands people are in hospital with it. We understand that some pubs are in a precarious position, but to show some empathy of our situation would have been welcome, or even a pleasant apology that we could not have a refund which we would have understood. I have not been able to find any terms and conditions on their website.

Stayed here for one night. Upon arrival we found the “reception “ piled with rubbish and dirty. Check in was done at the bar by a lady who was obviously too unwell to undertake such duties. Room - lots of dust, odd mix of lighting bulbs, bathroom clean but basic ( very small shower) Bed linen was clean. We didn’t eat in the restaurant because it closed at 8pm but they did provide a cold snack for us. The bar was not welcoming. We were fortunate that the weather was so good that we were able to sit outside and enjoy company with other visitors to the area. Sadly we would not return.

Highly recommended place to stay and explore the Wensleydale area. Took advantage of the 3 night B&B + dinner deal. Food was excellent, with a good choice for breakfast and varied and changeable 3-course menu in the evening. Rooms were comfortable, ours had an ensuite with bath and shower. Being at the front and on the corner there was some road noise, even through the night. This wasn't a surprise as we knew the pub was right on the main Hawes to Leyburn A road and it didn't detract from an enjoyable stay. The pub has a good selection of local beer and other drinks and caters well for residents, locals and visitors staying elsewhere. We were well looked after and our bill, for 2 of us, worked out at £140 per night that included B&B, 3 course dinner and a couple of drinks each. Quality at a reasonable price in my view.

What a lovely place to be. Nestled in some of Yorkshires most beautiful views a 16th century coach house. Maintains it old world feel and the staff were very welcoming. Chatting to the owner very friendly evening at the bar. The food was amazing the Steak pie was to die for! Would recommend 100% if you want to stay in a traditional pub. If mod cons and sky tv is your bag this prob isn't for you but for a lovely relaxing stay its perfect. Ample safe parking too which was brilliant as some places not so easy. Will certainly be back next dales trip even if we are staying in a new location would be calling in for tea and a chat.

We were 5 adults and 3 children. 1 of which needed high chair. The high chair was dirty which was not a great start. Really poor choice of beers too. I ordered a steak pie, came with hardly any veg although the veg was delicious. The pastry was gorgeous too but it wasn't a pie, it was a pie top. The gravy was oily and soo watery. Kids had sausage and chips and was good apparently. Gammon was also good. There was so argument going on in the kitchen, effing and Jeffing. Cost us £120 which I thought was shocking given the quality and portion size. Overall not impressed

The food here is generous in its portions, and served nice and hot, its also very dog friendly. Staff are very engaging and helpful too. The interior is somewhat off putting, very dark stained wood everywhere with lots of sketches probably of locals covering all the walls. Some may think this is traditional but even the Woolpack on Emmerdale has had a makeover. A decent revamp of the interior would be bring this place up a notch to match its good food, hence 3.

We stayed there for 3 nights. The staff couldn’t be bothered to offer us anywhere to put our 3 bikes despite clearly having a double garage available. Their relentlessly long faces set the tone for this place. The exterior is tatty and poorly kept. Our rooms were not cleaned for 3 days (no explanation given), toiletries were pathetic, food portions minuscule - every cost corner that could be cut was cut. Ironically the food is actually ok if you can get any service.Do yourself a favour and head to one of the dozens of other pubs in the area that have figured out how to be civil to their guests and present their businesses attractively. This sorry bunch have given up on hospitality.

CaroleRasAlKhaimahRas Al Khaimah820Don't stray off the road to the George and DragonReview of The George and Dragon InnReviewed 2 days agoWe went to this hotel for an evening meal whilst on our first holiday in our new touring caravan behind the Aysgarth Falls Hotel, where we had previously been for a meal the previous evening to celebrate our wedding anniversary. We expected a meal of a similar calibre as the prices were similar and it appeared to have several stars, as had the Aysgarth Hotel. Oh dear, what a disappointment. The landlord was far from friendly and when the kitchen announced that fish and chips were off the menu he said in a demeaning voice that he had expected us to complain - which we didn't! In fact neither of us had any intention of ordering fish and chips! The restaurant as a whole was a dark and dingy place. There were no tablecloths, as one might expect when paying quite expensive prices for a meal. In fact the table we were given felt sticky and the only serviettes were cheap paper ones. There was no lighting on the table and no condiments and none were offered prior to eating our meal, even though I had ordered an expensive steak meal with which I would normally have had mustard or mayonnaise etc. There were no vegetables whatsoever with the meal apart from one mushroom and a tomato, not even onion rings. The next day my husband felt ill, having eaten a curry. To add to the wonderful atmosphere, the landlord dropped a large bottle of Peroni from an overloaded tray of drinks which he was carrying. I don't know if it fell on anyone. We would never, ever return to this hotel even thought we love the Dales and have been there many times. Perhaps this establishment doesn't need to rely on repeat business and recommendations, but in the current climate of hospitality surely good customers should be welcomed and not made to feel like they are a nuisance - especially when they order some of the most expensive items on the menu!!

I have read a few reviews on here and I think some are unfair. The comments on here about the gentleman behind the bar are unkind, he may not have a firework up his proverbial but he was actually a really nice guy with a dry sense of human and a care for what he does and the people he serves. The brother and sister who served the food were attentive and very quick to respond to service. I only wish we could have said a personal thank you to their Mam who cooked the wonderful food as it was amazing. The place had lots of character, not your usual bistro but that’s what made it special. The food, where do I start, it was outstanding. This was 5 star quality with outstanding presentation and flavour from the fish and chips and steak pie to the steak and lamb, we actually went back for a second visit. Everything and everyone’s showed attention to detail and a sense of pride in what they do with no corners cut. Ran by a proud family who puts quality at the heart of what they do, seriously you need to try this place. Well done guys... we WILL be back!

Had two chicken sandwiches, at 6.95 they are massively overpriced, chicken was ok but the bistro leaf garnish was wet, like it was from the bottom of the bag and soggy. Four out of six in our party ordered the fish and chips, and it was excellent. I can see how other reviewers might have encountered the landlord when he may have been grumpier, because he may have been stressed out about something, but he was perfectly pleasant when we met him to pay our dinner bill. We were amused to note that all the dinner checks are hand-written -- not computerized -- and that there are spikes on the wall to put bills/checks, based on what section of the dining room the order needs to go -- very old-fashioned, but appropriate in a public house in the country!

Its 4 years since we last visited and how the mighty have fallen. The atmosphere has changed from friendly and vibrant, the landlord seems to be trying to hospitable but it felt out of character and he's just basically grumpy. The bar area is grubby, the menus merely a crumpled printout,no specials on the board apart from craft gins, the range of food on offer was uninspiring yet the prices were much the same. When our meals arrived, the food was OK - but not the above average dishes we'd had on the several visits we'd made before. Sad to report that things have gone downhill. We were told since we hadn't booked that we would have to wait 45 mins for food, only to realise later that that time was to be seated since they were expecting some bookings coming in. They only liked to take food orders once THEY were ready for it so they didnt get confused. We recently visited this establishment after visiting several times before and previously always been delighted, however, on this occasion it wasn't a pleasant visit. The landlord was very gruff and unwelcoming and seemed in low mood also commented on by other customers who tried cheery conversation with him. The food was not of the same standard we have enjoyed before, the trio of sausages was accompanied by mashed potatoes and 4 small pickled onions and gravy? The Scampi chips and peas was unfortunately not good the chips seemed to be frozen type and and were very dry, scampi tasteless and only just cooked, the peas were over done in a microwave. Sadly on this occasion our visit was more than disappointing and so we will be visiting other establishments in the future in the hopes that it improves.

Went for evening meal. The food was good but the venue lacked ambience. We ordered a sharing cheese board for pud which was was great. The table by the fish tank does not add to the experience!

Well according to sign they are open all day, but as we arrived at 5:30 and place was in darkness, I felt like I was intruding going in. A lady was sat at the bar reading the paper. Didn’t speak until we asked if pub was open. She folded paper and went behind the bar. We got a drink and sat down. She informed us restaurant opened at 6.

A hidden gem off the beaten track but with lovely food and friendly staff in this countryside pub not far from Aysgarth falls worth a visit when in the area.

I think the landlord gets an unfair review in some of these reviews. We stopped off for a drink and found him quite funny and chatty. I am a Yorkshire lass so maybe I am used to the Yorkshire way but I would definitely come back here to eat.

This traditional pub serves food in a quiet and relaxing atmosphere and with really friendly staff - we were made to feel very much at home. We enjoyed our first meal so much that we returned to the George. The menu is varied and the food is excellent. We'd definitely recommend if you're in the area.

We booked for an evening meal when my son came to visit. The starters and main were good, fish pie nice but not inspiring and lacked vegetables (although I guess I could have asked for more) the steak pie has thin gravy and only a pastry top, rather difficult to eat out of the dish, however, the desserts were amazing, service was quick, but the wait staff were rather young and inexperienced

We enjoyed our evening meal, in thie very good pub restaurant. I would recommend this place to anyone and it was just across the road from the guest house we were staying at. At our table we could watch the turtle continuesly swimming round. Turtle soup on the menu next time?

Turned up for some food and it was very busy. The man behind the bar told us it would be over an hour maybe longer. He gave us a time of 8.30 pm and we said ok we will wait.

Place was quiet when we arrived and a young lady started to serve us. Suddenly she stopped and almost ran from behind the bar. An older man appeared and made a very unprofessional comment about her not doing her job. Seemed she was doing fine to me as there was no one else to greet us.

Our first night in Yorkshire and first ever trip so staying nearby we thought we'd try here. Pub was empty when we arrived but got bit busier later. Very strange atmosphere as soon as we walked in, not a smile from the landlord or warmth or chat of any kind. Felt like Simon Pegg when he walked into the pub in 'Hot Fuzz'!Sadly that carried on the whole evening from the waiter (?son) and helper (grandson?). Even when we tried to make conversation, nothing came back. The 'no mobile phones in the restaurant' sign made things really difficult for us. Our teenage son is autistic and finds looking at his phone calming when we are waiting for food but with the sign and with ASD kids being sticklers for rules, he wouldn't even get his phone out and was full of anxiety and argumentative, making our meal very stressful. I do wish people would think before putting up a generalised sign like that, not everyone is the same and can just sit and talk. Very awkward and unusual for Yorkshire. The food however was fantastic and cooked perfectly and we couldn't fault it at all. Such a shame but because it was so strange, we just wouldn't go back.

The location is simply fabulous. At the top of Swaledale with views all around. Set up for walkers - so friendly, helpful and knowledgeable about the area. Mixing with fellow walkers meant a very sociable stay. Room was good size and comfortable. Restaurant bar and lounge were of high quality and brought a high enjoyable stay. Matt and Dave are great hosts. Thoroughly recommended.

No beer on draught, no food available. The only drink on tap was from yorkshire water. Don't know how the landlord makes a living, rumour is he has funds hidden in a barrel of Wensleydale Gold.

We visited 20th October 2024 for a meal for our sons birthday. We always go for special occassions however the meals were not as good as normal . Myself and daughter In law chose the bottomless Chinese my Husband and son chose trio parmos and my other son chose the Barney rubble mixed grill . Our table was booked for 6.30 we sat for 20 minutes and I had to ask Bar staff if we were to place our order at the bar to which she said I will come to your table . Long story short we waited and waited when the food finally arrived the trio parmos were extreamly dry and very hard unedible really . Very dissapointing experence .
