The George and Dragon in South Hams

Lovely food, friendly staff. Even had a nickname name, we went in so often. The Prosecco People 🤣🤣 don't mind, though. That's all we ever drank. Would recommend going in here.

We visited a few years ago for food with family and each time we come to Dartmouth we haven’t visited again due to a disappointing experience with staff and the food was just ok. We come to Dartmouth frequently and decided after a good 4 year absence to give the pub a go again. We didn’t have food this time which looked nice from what came out of the kitchen and the cakes always look good. Once again staff were rude and in direct contrast to other establishments who always provide a warm and welcome atmosphere. We won’t be giving this establishment a 3rd chance of a visit unless management and staff changed. There are plenty of great welcoming pubs in Dartmouth to choose over this establishment.

Awful food. When they serve you burnt chips you know you have a problem. Wetherspoon style food but three times the price and really poor. Service was good.

Really good place to eat. We went in the evening of a very wet and dreary day in dartmouth. The staff were still really cheerful and helpful. The food was very fresh and a good choice on the menu. Would go again and if I was staying longer would go more than once in a week

Gorgeous crab sandwich, perfect mix of white & brown meat served on soft fresh bloomer bread with a lovely glass of cold Sauvignon, enjoyed in the sunny garden at the G&D. Excellent family lunch, great service & good value

We received a very warm welcome and having a small dog with us was no problem at all. Extensive menu and extremely tasty food served hot and quickly to the table. Very attentive staff who were super friendly and nothing was too much bother. Excellent value, clean and spacious and I would highly recommend. Indoor and outdoor seating.

Visited two years ago and were disappointed with the food but after reading reviews this time when visiting Dartmouth we gave it another try. Unfortunately despite friendly staff and plenty of tables plus a nice beer garden, the food was disappointing. Quality felt lacking and food was bland and seemed like it may have been frozen/ defrosted ( watery chicken for example). Might be wrong on that but definitely not what we’d hoped for. No salad garnish or nod to anything other than basic presentation.

Had lunch with the family yesterday. The staff were very friendly and food very good, plentiful and nicely presented. We were advised of the delay with food due to staffing and dealing with a private function, but we were more than happy to escape a very soggy Dartmouth for a while!

What an amazing family meal we had at the George and Dragon in Dartmouth. We had booked the table in advance and also requested three tomahawk steaks. The service from arriving at the door was friendly we were shown to our reserved table and given time to settle before our drinks and food order was taken. The drinks arrived and shortly after the food which was outstanding. The steaks were cooked to perfection and the rest of the food was piping hot and also looked amazing. The steaks were the best I have ever had and as you can see in the photos perfectly cooked. The teens tucked in and loved the food, even the picky eater forgot about being a picky eater and tucked into the perfect steak. Deserts were available for those of us needing a sweet fix to end the meal, a full range of deserts, ice creams were available and what really nice is you can see them on display before ordering. All in all a wonderful experience both food and staff so thank you to them

Once again we were treated to a fabulous Christmas Day experience, having enjoyed our first one here in 2022, on the recommendation of the local Facebook page. The staff are professional, enthusiastic and so friendly. The food was excellent, the decor & atmosphere superb. We hope to return.

This was a return trip on our once a year visit to Dartmouth. Having discovered the G & D last year, and been well pleased, we were happy to go back again, the crunch point for us was that it is dog friendly. Once again, we were happy. Friendly service,a decent choice of meals and good quality food. See you again next year.

Excellent place for a relaxing drink or a superb lunch, very dog friendly too. During the wettest day of the year the staff were so kind and obliging, they couldn't do enough for us.

We visited The George and Dragon on September 3rd which was a Sunday. We sat inside where it was clean with subdued lighting, cool and empty with some quirky decor items and signage. We stood at the seating podium for some time before a member of staff came into the restaurant to seat us. It was around 3pm and they stop serving food at 5pm on Sundays and they were very busy in the outside seating area so I was not surprised to be told that a number of items were not available. Hubby and daughter ordered fish and chips I ordered the scampi and chips with diet cokes all round. When our food arrived it was piping hot and of decent portion size the drinks were cold and refreshing. Fairly good value for money, clean and pleasant surroundings and polite and friendly staff made us want to revisit during our holiday in Dartmouth. However on the two occasions we tried to go back on the first we were told that they do not serve food between 3pm and 5pm we arrived just after 3 disappointed but hey ho that was our fault for not looking at the service timings, we went back at 2pm on the Thursday and sat in the garden where people were sitting tucking into plates of just delivered food, we asked for menus only to be told that they weren’t taking food orders due to a function inside. Afraid this isn’t acceptable practice in our eyes, hence the four not five.

We went for an unplanned visit to Dartmouth and found the G&D. We had left it a bit late to get food but they accommodated us and I'm so glad they did. The food was amazing, I had the meat free ceasar salad, and just wow it was fantastic. The kiddies meal was amazing and little one enjoyed it and the garlic bread. The waitress that served us was fantastic and so lovely. And the inside decor is so well done and beautiful. The only disappointing thing was we were so full we couldn't fit a sweet in and they looked delicious. We will definitely be back, thank you, we are very happy we found the G&D.

Just called in for drinks. Large outdoor seating area. Dogs welcomed too. Staff was friendly. We had drinks, three pints of coke which cost just under £14! My daughter had little snack, just plate of fries, which wasn’t the best if I’m honest. Kind of glad we didn’t eat there now. But okay for drinks

What a nightmare. Empty pub yet all hot drinks 'forgotten' from order (lager & lemonade poured when paid). 1 hot drink arrived, wrong order, returned with another 2, 1 missing, waitress denied having order despite paid for. Taking orders (a remembering to make the actual drinks) tends to be a prerequisite for accepting a bar job but I could be wrong. Awful.

Me and my friends had the most amazing time, I know all the bad reviews are other shops because it is so brilliant there the staff were really paitiant and kind the food was amazing i had the cheese, tomato and pesto pannini and it was amazing i got another so i could take it home for the next day i had a small cake but it was still absoultely delisious xxxxxxx (if i miss spelt somthing in sorry i have dyslexia)

For the second time we rented a self-catered flat above The George and Dragon, itself a good pub serving nice ales and good food in the middle of Dartmouth. The accommodation is of a high standard (2 double bedrooms and spacious living room) and extremely convenient for everything in Dartmouth. The staff are very friendly and helpful.

On a very sunny evening we chose to sit outside on one of the colourful tables. The menu offers more than the predictable burgers and we chose Scampi and Lamb Tagine. The scampi was very good, the Tagine served in a traditional Tagine lidded dish was piping hot, gently spiced and delicious. Washed down with a pint each of Stumble Bee! From the friendly welcome to the equally friendly farewell, The George and Dragon was excellent. We will definitely return when we next visit Dartmouth.

Brilliant visit here today for an 80th birthday, we had a private room upstairs, decorated with banners, great as was private for all the family and small kids. Food was really good.. staff fab and welcoming!

Came here today for my Birthday with my husband and my pup Cooper. From start to finish the staff were lovely and welcoming and even moved us to a bigger table so I could have my puppy on a seat. The roast was one of the best we’ve had, everything was so delicious. We didn’t think it could get any better but then came desserts. Whoever makes them cakes is a brilliant cook. I had the crunchie cake and my husband had the chocolate… massive portions and absolutely delicious. Sadly we are from Kent so this will not be a regular but i totally recommend this restaurant to everyone.

We took a big chance as we were staying in Dartmouth for Christmas, and wanted a nice Christmas meal on the big day. We definitely made the right choice. Fabulous food, lovely staff. We hope to return.

In Dartmouth there are is a good choice of places to eat, some better than others. We hadn't tried The George and Dragon before - not sure why now?! It's a family friendly pub with lovely staff and good value food. We are on a mission to try a different Sunday roast each month - but we will be hard pushed to beat the meal we had here! Fresh seasonal veg, and plenty of it, served with the roast meat. The meat was well cooked and very tasty; beef and pork. No crackling sadly, but in my experience, it's never as good as home - and sometimes a dental nightmare! I cannot fault this good value roast, and we will defiantly be back. Highly recommended.

No vegetarian option to roast dinner, pork or beef.. Apart from fish n chips 🤷🏼‍♀️ no alternative for gravy with red wine sauce or with cider, Kids roasts get no gravy 🤷🏼‍♀️ is beyond me! Would not warm up fresh gravy from M&S next door either.. when we purchased it… would defo not visit again and would never recommend

Good selection of lager and local ales. Food is typical pub fare but it tasted fie and did the job!! Pretty good prices for the middle of Dartmouth. Lovely big outside sitting area for the sun and dogs!!

Visited on a busy Sunday afternoon during CoVid...hadn't booked but a short wait and we were seated.Friendly, hard working staff in a pleasant (impressively clean during a busy time) courtyard and had good service.Enjoyed drinks and lunch. We had waited ages to be seated. I am deaf therefore need to sit opposite the person I am with to see them speak . After an eternity the older blond waitress came . She pointed us to a table near the road where you sit beside each other . I asked if we could have another table , as there were a couple empty . She said we’d have to wait ages as she was busy and didn’t have time to sanitise it . We took the unsuitable table as we didn’t wish to make a fuss . Low and behold , 20 seconds later she sanitised the other table and seated the couple behind us . How rude ! We left , she didn’t notice . We went to Bushall’s where there is always a warm welcome, great service and superb food . We won’t go back . Covid no excuse for rudeness.

This pub refused to let us in after somone in our group stood up without a mask on yet half the staff don’t wear a mask!! it’s outside for 1 and Very well spaced out! Staff are very rude, keep asking people to put a mask on even though they don’t wear them themselves. Refusing people in for no reason, refusing drinks to people. We had an extremely bad experience the week before, was here with a disabled man and at the end of the night when last order were done the blonde hair woman said ‘I don’t care if he is disabled or not you need to hurry up and get out’. This pub really needs to consider how their staff speak and who they higher, and how their staff speak. The security guard of also very rude, nice to certain people and not to other, they definitely judge books by their cover. Will not be returning.

Me and a friend came here as it’s pretty much the only pub that has outdoor tables and we aren’t allowed to eat together indoors because of Tier 2 rules. The place was empty, which was such a shame for a Saturday night. We sat on a table outside under shelter, ordered via the app, all easy peasy. The service was brilliant, really friendly and keen to follow Covid rules, which was reassuring. The food was delicious and really filling. We both had the fish and chips, shared a bottle of wine, and had a hot chocolate and coffee to finish. We took hot water bottles with us and had a great time catching up! We plan to go back tomorrow for coffee and the cake we were too full to eat tonight!

The team at the George and Dragon are friendly, very dog friendly and the place itself is both well organised for Covid (one way systems in place, QR codes on all tables for easy venue check in with the NHS app) and spacious, with plenty of room between tables. The food is good pub fayre - not gastropub or restaurant show stopping but then it's not gastropub pub prices. We really enjoyed our visit and would definitely recommend

After having a nasty experience at the seven stars in Dartmouth I rang the George and dragon on the off chance they had a table which they did. From start to finish everything was first class the service and food were probably the best I've had in Devon a special mention to Gaby and Alex these 2 work so hard and are very committed to making sure the visit is memorable. I can recommend the squid and whitebait to start they were both huge portions and so fresh. Keep up the good work guys
