My husband and I celebrated our 50th Anniversary at The George And Dragon. Chippy and the whole staff at this wonderful venue made our party and stay the most wonderful celebration we could hope for. I cannot fault anything. There were over 48 of us and I can honestly say not one person had a bad thing to say. The atmosphere was one of pure joy and the food was out of this world. Chippy is an amazing host. Sydnie and the team took excellant care of us especially making sure we had food etc as well as our guests. The Chef and kitchen staff worked hard and the food was amazing. Once again Thank you all for giving us a 50th Anniversary to remember.

A fabulous find thanks to Trip Advisor! From the greeting when we arrived, to the beautiful food and excellent service, we enjoyed everything about the G&D. There are not many places that ask if you are happy to pay the 12.5% service charge and we didn’t begrudge a penny of it! We will return.

We were here for a birthday meal, quite early but the place was already busy. However, we were warmly welcomed and shown to our table. They specialise in fish here, and it's very high quality. Starters of scallops and a large dish of mussels, mains were sole and mackerel - all really well seasoned and cooked, full of flavour. And a good, reasonably priced wine list to accompany the meal. The only slight disappointment was the addition of a 12.5% service charge to our bill. Now we would probably have left this sort of tip anyway and, in fairness, the friendly waitress did ask if we were happy with it. Just took a bit of a shine off an otherwise excellent evening.

We arranged a personalised menu for a special occasion for a party of 12 including 4 children. The whole experience was faultless and throughly enjoyed by all. The table was beautifully laid in the gorgeous dining room by the log fire and all the food was excellent and attractively presented. The children’s meals were generous and of good quality which is often not the case when eating out. The service was also excellent (thank you again Amy) - attentive and efficient but not hurried. Thank you to all the staff who made our day special.

We stayed a night in this lovely 16th Century Coaching in. Food was fantastic and the quaintness and atmosphere charming. Amy went above and beyond to make us welcome. We had a comfortable nights sleep in room 3. The floor is uneven, but only adds to the charm of this very old inn. We had our two little dogs with us. We brought their own dog beds as there were none provided in the room and also brought their own dog bowls. We had the continental breakfast in the morning as had an early start which was lovely. The garden is lovely also and the potting shed a lovely place to sit and just chill. A big thank you to Amy for everything she did during our stay.

Delicious food, delivered well on a unique and excellent menu. Specialising in sea food from Cornwall - but actually the broader menu is just as good. Its easy to see why people come from outside the local area to dine. This is a great place to have a special evening out with family, loved ones or for a celebration. The staff are very attentive and everything is delivered to very high standards. Two words sum it up - First class!

A nice little pub midway between Devizes and Melksham that specialises in fish and seafood from Cornwall so worth a visit we thought. My wife and I decided to go for two starters each and my first was asparagus with a fried egg and parmesan. This was fine but the asparagus not as sweet as I would have hoped. My wife went for deep fried whitebait and they were pleasant enough but the batter was perhaps a bit heavy and a lighter more tempura-like batter would have left more flavour to the fish. Following on I had the salt and pepper squid with garlic and chilli which was good. My wife wasn't so happy with her dressed Cornish crab. I had a taste and agreed that it lacked flavour other than dill and so was disappointing. We then shared a chocolate and strawberry roulade - unmemorable, and a crumble with local ice cream which was good. Coffee was OK, service was spot on - timely, cheerful and helpful. An OK lunch but not so good we'd hurry back at £80 without wine.

It was disappointing that the reason we had selected The George and Dragon was the close, walkable proximity to Caen Locks - which, due to an earlier incident were not operational .....BUT what an excuse for a return visit. Not that after 3 very pleasant nights we would ever need one to return and enjoy such warm hospitality. From the outset of a phone conversation with Chippy to book, to a cheery welcome by Maria we knew we would be well looked after.Dinner on all three evenings was taken in the garden terrace area which gives the atmosphere of being “somewhere in a Mediterranean village”. A lovely happy buzz of laughter, conversation and the clink of glasses. Being a lover of seafood totally blown away by the variety and absolute freshness offered. We live by the sea in Lymington and we’ve got nothing locally here that comes anywhere near that which we enjoyed.Chippy, so friendly, funny and accommodating has chosen a super team, both front of house and behind the scenes in the kitchen. One afternoon we sat enjoying a beer outside near Chippy and can honestly say during that time the phone didn’t stop ringing with bookings for the rooms and restaurant - surely that speaks volumes.Just three rooms, ours, No 1 - large double en-suite was very comfortable overlooking the Main Street, OK a bit of noise from the traffic but we didn’t come to spend more time than necessary in the room with so much to see and do locally. As others reviews echo - a true gem of a place and one we will certainly be returning to.Kind regards to all and thanks again. Kathy and Colin.

I have barely just arrived, only two hours ago and can already say this is one of the finest stays I have ever had, and I have had many, up and down the country in the finest hotels including all of London’s most upmarket hotels. The George and Dragon just outside Devizes is simply Devine. I am staying in Room 1, a sumptuous yet clean space with white wooden bed, comfortable mattress, gorgeous interiors and soft pink blankets. The bathroom is gorgeous with a double ended bath and luxurious toiletries.I even adore the white wooden shutters on the windows. Despite it being a beamed room it is light and airy and everything has been thought of.I booked a table at the restaurant without knowing what divinity I was in for. I was asked my name by the exceptional waiting staff and given theirs. At first such a simple thing but it made my meal personal and warm. Nothing was too much trouble and the waiting girls all wore smiles and warmth, each stopped to chat and share stories though I’m certain if I’d have prefers privacy they also would have given me that.I can honestly say that the meal I had was the best I have eaten in twenty years. In one meal of two courses I had crab and samphire, pansies/flowers, hollendaise, home made bread, pea shoots, sautéed caper potatoes and the creamiest butter. I savoured every mouthful. The restaurant is simply stunning. A garden of love, there were grapes growing on vines and succulents in pots surrounding the garden enclosure I chose to sit in.I am so full I can’t fathom pudding but I am certain it would be tremendous. What a place this is; do not hesitate to book it.I felt as welcome as if I were a long lost relative, introduced to people by the owner as if my presence was important. I will leave feeling fuller in stomach and heart and with plenty of peace in my spirit.I cannot wait to return and will be booking in a weekend for my parents to visit. The only improvement I can see would be for a little Digital TV for those of us too full to see the sites. But really irrelevant in the great scheme of things! What a place!!!! I do hope they go for a Michelin star... they very much deserve one.

I’ve been familiar with this fine pub for many years but I have to say it’s gone from strength over the years and now - under the tutelage of the affable veteran of professional hospitality and warmth - ‘Chippy’ - a fine fellow if ever there was one -the pub has become my go to rest stop whenever I’m in Wiltshire visiting family. I say this because this pub wins my favour on every count . It is equally a great place to stay and a wonderful place to eat . We have spent Christmas here and I must confess we were treated like royalty . The pub itself is quirky and traditional - full of antique beams and rolling floors and wonderfully creaky floorboards - with obligatory fireplace . Our room is my favourite room and was chosen as my other half insists on a roll top bath . It is warm cosy inviting and when staying here you are made to feel like part of the George and dragon family ! What isn’t there to love ? Plentiful hot water and breakfast is a fun affair because chippy is on hand to check you are in good spirits and bring you the finest country produce you could ever want. It’s a fab place for fish and the daily catch menu is always on point . Our sea bream was fresh as you like and I’ve had fantastic oysters here before . We had a meat platter too and the chutney was easily the best I’ve ever had - must ask the secret behind it ! I’m almost reluctant to let the cat out of the bag with this pub because it stands head and shoulders above your average Wiltshire pub . It is truly a ‘destination pub’ and that’s because of the warmth and subtlety of the staff alongside top quality food cooked brilliantly and with no compromises . Location is also good and they have a super outdoor space with heaters and plenty of parking . The pub itself is not that big so it is an intimate and super cosy affair. This is my favourite pub in Wiltshire and rightly so - we can’t wait to visit again - it truly is a home from home and we cannot thank the staff and chippy enough for making everything perfect. Keep up the good work guys - see you again soon !

If only we were looking for the full lunch - my wife and I only had starters as we planned for dinner near Salisbury. But how good were they? My wife had chili squid and said it was the best squid she had ever eaten. I was hurt! I do a pretty mean squid various ways. But not to worry. I had baked crab which was equally wonderful. Along with some good bread, a very good pint (lots of choice) and very cheerful servers, it could not have been better. We were looking forward to a special occasion meal out but came away very disappointed. The pub was very welcoming thanks to two young staff - particularly Maria. The food was fine but not exceptional by any standards. We spend nearly £100 (only one of the two us was drinking) and felt it was poor value for money. My crab was okay but the dressing overpowered the crab meat. My partners whitebait contained quite large fish and was too crunchy for her. The mains were again okay but not over £20 okay. My sea bass was very good but it only comes with chips (or other potatoes) which were quite dry and hard work. I needed some mayo to help. I was unsure if they were handmade or not but they were hard work not matter what. My partners food was similar. Not sure if I will return - the set menu looked good value - as there is a Rick Stein in Marlborough and for the same money ....PS I don't like the service charge being automatically added to the bill and the staff having to 'confirm' I wanted to give it. Surely the amount given should reflect what the diner feels is appropriate?

Last year I treated my future in-laws to dinner on Christmas Eve at the George & Dragon in Rowde, Wiltshire, because it was rated in the Good Pub Guide as 'superior'. It was the last booking before Christmas Day, when its staff were likely to be overdosed on a month of Christmas bonhomie and celebrations of its customers. We're sure the following shortcomings are unusual and perhaps we should have said something on the night, but we were reluctant to make a scene and spoil it given the bill. Overall, it was a disappointment for Christmas Eve.The catalogue of complaints include:1. Our main guest left a quarter of his fish as he felt it had not been fully gutted or was off.2. We had to ask for a vegetarian menu, which was presented on a handwritten torn waitress note. The waitress explained that the goats cheese option was wrapped in Parma ham!3. The chicken, lobster and dover sole were all off the menu by 7.30pm, but we were only informed after we had been directed to the blackboard specials by the bar and had selected our meals.4. We ordered spritzers with soda and no ice. We received spritzers with lemonade. We asked for an exchange but received them with ice. 5. No side vegetables were suggested and so the mains came with only potatoes or chips.6. The mustard veg served with the pork turned out to be mainly peas, the fruit crumble crust was a soggy oatmeal mix and the risotto had the texture of plaster of paris.7. One of our number ordered ice cream and an expresso, which the waitress correctly identified as an affogato. But the coffee arrived alone and it cooled, with the ice cream failing to arrive. When a reminder was given, the cooled coffee was correctly taken away but then only the ice cream reappeared.8. On our neighbour's table lobsters were served without claws and a price reduction was only offered after it was served.

What a gem! My Dad and I stumbled across this place when looking for some lunch. The food was great – I've never had better salmon teriyaki (cooked 'en Papillote' – in parchment paper). Pate was great too. It's got a really surprising and impressive seafood menu, though plenty of other choices. However, as well as the great food and beer (and friendly atmosphere), the staff excelled themselves by (a) locating my lost earphones when I phoned them up a few hours later, and (b) sending them back to my home address via expensive registered post! Incredible service!

Another great afternoon/evening at the George and Dragon. Starting with traditional minced pies and mulled wine late afternoon, then off to church for the village Carol Service. Then back to the G&D for a fabulous Christmas dinner. Well done to Chippy and his wonderful crew for great food and service. 10 out of 10 again x

What a gem of a pub this is. We stopped in with our two young children on Sunday and had such a lovely lunch. The pub itself is very pretty - old and full of character. The staff were so lovely and welcoming and the menu was great. Our son had sausage and chips and we opted for fish as we had seen that the pub is well known for fish. We were delighted - delicious fresh bread and oil while we waited (kept the children happy!) and the mains were cooked and presented beautifully. Overall a fantastic place and we'll be back to visit soon. Thank you!

There's nothing wrong with this eatery. The food is excellent but I left feeling not satisfied and still a bit underfed. A larger meal would ensure more stars.

Fell on this pub by accident for lunch. More of a restaurant than a pub (variety of breads provided unasked, quality napkins), table service. Extensive fish offerings. Set price 2 or 3 course meals on offer. Not cheap but you get what you pay for. A good place for a treat.

We booked a table to celebrate my birthday. On arrival we asked for soft drinks for the children and were told they didn’t have any especially lemonade and for a pub/restaurant that was unacceptable. We were given paper menus which we unreadable due to a lack of toner in the printer. They did give us some better ones after I complained. The food was not as good as I expected for the price and I would get better value at my local fish and chip shop. I definitely will not be going back and will advise my friends the same. Dropped in for lunch on spec. Not the most obvious access for the motoring stranger but well worth seeking out. Just the most comfortable atmosphere with friendly welcome. Splashed out on fish soup starter and devilled kidneys mains to follow. Rich and delicious lunch unsurpassed in my 75 years. Enough said....

As a seasoned diner and a lover of all seafood my friend booked a table for my birthday treat .... how I was looking forward to the crab, prawns, scallops etc ........ we arrived at 6.30 ( first diners in ) only to find that there were none .... contrary to all the advertising showing the seafood platter “shipped daily from Cornwall “.. this was bang in the middle of crab season too .

The website says the bedrooms have just been refurbished but judging by the condition of our room (No.3) I suspect that this was done some time ago. Some of the furniture was decidedly shabby (and not so chique), but the bed and pillows were very comfortable. There is a roll-top bath just big enough for a small person, but no shower attachment on the taps. I know they mention this on the website (we missed that one), but how people are expected to wash their hair easily is a mystery. The lovely ladies who served us dinner found us a water jug to use instead. Surely this should not be acceptable in a room these days and I understand it will be rectified. The 'designer' obvious slipped up! The room was clean, but there were several things that needed attention and the carpets had seen better days. If you are tall be very careful of the low beams. If you duck for one you could hit the second and see stars if you are not concentrating (like I did). We did sleep well, but be warned, the traffic on a Saturday morning starts coming by early so it was a shorter sleep than ideal. On the positive side the evening meal was very good, the staff were delightful and the breakfast very good too. You do have to pay extra for anything cooked. So a bit of a mixed picture here - on a positive note, Chippy, one of the owners, said they will be freshening up the rooms this autumn.

The welcoming we received was exemplary, the waitresses very pleasant. However we had 4 half chickens that were severely under cooked. 2 of the chickens went back for further cooking but came back within 2 minutes still under cooked. This is an expensive restaurant and would not expect this type of quality from the kitchen. Oh and 2 x lamb was sent back for further cooking. The manager/owner did not charge us for the chicken meals. Whole experience ruined a nice day out. Will not return

A somewhat underwhelming experience. Whilst the food was pleasant quality did not match the extremely expensive cost. The menu was also, "due to a busy lunchtime" (an excuse constantly repeated), rather limited, even when a pre-booked crab was ordered. Then asking for a soft drink became something of a trial, with basic soft drinks being "unavailable" and then not delivered to order. Had I not been with friends this is the point I would probably have left.

My friends both had the fish cakes to start with and one always has the salmon teriyaki for main. Good sized portions and a big wine selection too. Chip and his staff will help you to enjoy your time with them. Rowde is a sweet village. The bedrooms look nice from the photos but didn’t stay there. Highly recommended

We had a wonderful lunch at the George and Dragon . As with a previous review it was ten years or more since I visited this eatery. Unlike their critical review our experience was extremely positive. Had the squid starter my partner the figs . Both dishes were excellent . Squid is not easy to prepare . This was one of the best squid dishes I have eaten (no sign of soggy batter just fresh squid in an olive and pepper sauce !) I may have it as a main the next time !!

So we stopped here for lunch on Saturday 6 april. I had mussels and chips, my wife had cornish sardines on toast. The staff were really nice and we were allowed to bring the dog in. We were pleasantly surprised to get some free bread as a starter which was very nice. My mussels were very nice, so no problem there, but my wifes sardines were very undercooked. She sent them back and a new lot were served which were also undercooked, I had a taste and it was totally inedible. I was amazed when I logged on here that evening and found that @Gaijinette had posted the same problem the previous day. On that basis I feel justified in posting the title of this review. The lady who served us was kind enough to refund the fish even though we did not make a fuss about the second serving other than to mention it when the plates were cleared. But still, we have not visited this pub for 12 years due to a similar problem back then. This pub is a lovely place to sit and have lunch but I will have to try again in another 12 years I;m afraid :(

Was this an off day? Who knows. I am mystified by the glowing reviews of the seafood served here, because I thought it was pretty bad. My 'Cornish sardines' (aka pilchards) were under-cooked, under-seasoned and not that fresh-tasting, a family member's mussels were gritty, but the worst dish was the whole lemon sole, which was slimy, completely unseasoned and again not very fresh. I expected it pan-fried but it seemed to have been steamed or poached, but leaving the skin on made it flabby and unappealing. Really disappointing!

The seafood platter I was lucky enough to have last weekend was simply delicious. A beautiful crab, plump oysters, scrunchy goujons, scallops..... need I say more. Lots of other goodies on the menu and happy diners enjoying them, just great. Won’t be back - coffee ok but woeful miserable staff. A smile, a bit of engagement, even eye contact makes a difference - you want to feel welcome rather than an intruder. Surely when money is tight places realise they might have to go that bit extra to encourage people to go back.

Website showed great promise. Kerbside appeal good, car parking good, service very good ( very helpful and friendly). Strange layout inside as its old building, dining room has no bar. Garden not used to its full potential, only very old tired play equipment for children. Food reasonable, 2 out of 3 meals okay. Third meal of chicken disappointing, either poor quality meat or overcooked or possibly both !!!!! Empty on a nice sunny lunchtime !!! Sorry but would not rush back.
