Interesting pub - THE GEORGE HOTEL IS MENTIONED IN THE ROYAL COMMISSION'S INVENTORY OF HISTORICAL MONUMENTS - WEST DORSET EDITION AS BEING CONTEMPORARY WITH CENTURY, AND ATTENTION IS BEING DRAWN TO THE ORIGINAL MOULDED CEILING BEAM AND PLATES, ALSO THE FOUR CENTERED FIREPLACE WITH THE BUILT IN SPICE CUPBOARD WITH VENTILATION HOLES. REFERENCE IS ALSO MADE TO THE GEORGE HOTEL IN J.FOWLERS BOOK "MEDIEVAL SHERBORNE" WHERE MENTION IS MADE OF A RECORD KEPT BY THE VENERABLE JOHN CHANDLER, DEAN OF SALISBURY BACK IN 1404, IN WHICH HE REFERS TO SIX LICENCES HELD BY THE RECTOR OF ST. THOMAS' CHAPEL ON THE GREEN, ONE BEING THE GEORGE INN. THE DEAN'S TOPOGRAPHICAL NOTE, ON THE RECTOR OF THE GREENS, GLEBE LANDS DESCRIBES THIS BUILDING AS THE RECTORS HOSPICE, IN THE COURT ROLLS FOR THE YEARS 1459-60, RICHARD COOT AND JOHN OSTELER, OF THE GEORGE INN SHERBORNE WERE FINED 1/4d EACH FOR SELLING HAY AND OATS AT AN EXTORTIONATE PRICE. THE DWELLING PLACE OF AVISA-HEROINE IN A POEM, ATTRIBUTED TO SIR WALTER RALEIGH WRITTEN IN 1593, "WILLOBIE HAS AVISTA" IS CLEARLY INDICATED AS THE GEORGE INN SHERBORNE, "WHERE HANGS THE BADGE OF ENGLAND'S SAINT" ON SUNDAY 26TH JULY 1616, THE MAIN PARTY THAT WAS CONDUCTING SIR WALTER RALEIGH AS PRISONER FROM PLYMOUTH TO LONDON STOPPED FOR THE NIGHT IN SHERBORNE AT THE SIGN OF THE GEORGE.

Although we live in Bournemouth, whenever we are in the vicinity of Sherborne, we always visit The George for lunch. It is an old public house with a lovely atmosphere. The staff and service couldn’t be better, and the food is superb and great value for money. We’ve never been disappointed over the years and yesterday was no exception. I had scampi, chips and peas - absolutely yummy, followed by apple crumble and ice cream…couldn’t have been better. We we’re also impressed by the splendid new carpet throughout. All in all, definitely worthy of our 5 star rating

Very unusual regulars (not in a good way.) Lovely staff. I used to see this as the ideal quiet pub in town, though recently was told off by a regular for 'stealing the warmth' because I'd only had one drink in the half an hour I'd been there; it wasn't busy and I hadn't made any nuisance. I went elsewhere for my second.

The food was excellent, the only reason I give 4 and not 5 *, is because online and on the menu given out, it says cauliflower cheese with vegetables and new potatoes, but it came without potatoes, and when I asked told that it did not come with potatoes. Nipped in for a quiet pint and some 'pub' food - and not disappointed! Caring and courteous attention from the nice lady who was greeting and serving all customers very efficiently - and single-handed, at that! Varied menu at value-for-money prices - had cod and chips which was very good in terms quality, preparation and size; although the plate was a touch on the small side to accommodate the meal comfortably. Beer was good, too. I'm not keen on dogs in dining areas but, like so many pubs these days; by commercial necessity, they allow dogs in. These are restricted, however, to the bar area only. I do not visit Sherborne often but when next I'm there I'll return to the George, for sure. Thanks to all the staff.

Having stopped at the George about a year ago just for a bite of lunch, we returned on a spur of the moment visit while traveling near Sherborne and looking for somewhere for dinner. We were so pleased we did! Once again the welcome was warm and friendly, the beer well kept and the menu provided plenty of options to choose from. Although one of the recent 'very warm days' I can never resist a roast dinner, especially when Lamb is one of the options (which is rather rare now days!), while my wife opted for a steak and ale pie. Both were delicious and very reasonably priced, so much so that I was surprised when I was informed that my roast included a pudding! Well we left totally satisfied, full to gunnels and promising to return next time we're in Sherborne. Thanks again the George Team, keep doing what you're doing!

Nice little local with regular customers. Small choice of real ales, but you cant go wrong with Ringwood Brewery. It's success means no seating, especially when the restaurant is busy. However, you can't blame the pub for that! Two locals very kindly offered their seats to us as my companions were disabled. My marking down is sadly due to a moody landlord. I know we all have bad days but it was a pity that we felt a burden. The female member of staff was a delight. Toilets were fresh and clean (BTA)

Very disappointing, my brother and I went for lunch , as we only had parked for an hour we both ordered ham egg and chips, thinking that this would be quick . We waited 40 minutes when the food came the eggs were hard and extremely overcooked so we sent them back. 12 minutes later the meals came back and the reheated chips were overcooked. As I am a diabetic and needed food to avoid low blood sugar we ate the food. We had no apologies for the bad quality of the food and will not eat there again. Just for the record they were not even busy .

We were camping just down the road this past weekend and decided to have a browse - I'm glad we did as there was much more to this farm shop than I was expecting. Lots of different produce and gifts type things all quite nicely set out. Some things were sensibly priced considering you do expect to pay a slight premium at a farm shop (postcards 50p, fresh scones £1, clotted cream £1.99), but some of the prices were a little shocking - there were loaves of fresh bread at £4.50 and I nearly had a heart attack when I saw the price of ice cream being served at the side of the car park! Overall a worthwhile trip - the scones were delicious, good selection of ciders and got some lovely warm slipper socks. I'd recommend popping in if you're passing (the views are fantastic too) just don't expect any bargains.
