The Market House in West Dorset

The food was fine but the staff were not very friendly. The coffee was not hot and we had quite a wait for our food but it was dog friendly.

Food took over an hour to arrive, despite the fact we were the only group waiting for Food. I ordered the special and it was inedible. The barmaid kept apologising for the delay. Even the dogs refused the food.

Haven't been here since new owners took over. Sunday menu is now starters, plated roast and desserts. 3 sizes small £11.95 2 slices meat, medium £12.95 3 slices meat and large £14.95 4 slices meat, the large could be mixture of meats if required. Very quiet compared to past when it was a popular carvery but thought we'd give it a try. Ordered small and large, both came with Yorkshire pud, 3 roast potatoes for small and 4 for large, 2 bits of roast parsnips, 2 pieces roast carrots, swede, white cabbage and garden peas. Personally white cabbage under cooked, tiny portion of parsnip and carrots, too many peas, but overall a good roast. Meat was beef, turkey and pork, all very nice. Shame we had to ask for horseradish etc and no check back during meal. Also shame about Palmer alcohol prices but landlords can't do anything about that. However we enjoyed the meal and would recommend and return. Helen

Came here Saturday (26/8) late lunchtime for drinks and snacks. It's spacious inside and the only place we could get a table, says something. We were treated so badly by the young woman at the bar we decided to leave it. I've never been served by someone that rude. Every single thing was an issue. Walked upto bar i smiled and got a blank face back "what do you want?" Almost laughed! Then issue with table number going back and forth.. we were two paces away! Everything difficult. I didnt dare ask her name but she had dark and blonde hair in a messy done up hair style.. i think piercings. Wouldn't waste a penny here. We are local and sadly didn't find a new haunt today. Go to the ropemakers, even spoons you'll be treated better.

Good Sunday lunch. Not sure why they do three sizes sm, m, lg. 14 quid (m) is a lot of food. Well cooked. Burnt roasties (delicious) , cabbage, pees, swede. The Yorkshires didn’t rise so Wes were given two!. It’s all fresh and very tasty. Reminds me of Sunday lunch at my mums…

The pub we had intended to visit was closed on Wednesdays so we drove into Bridport looking for somewhere else to eat. Having checked the reviews en route we headed to one only to discover they had an event on, so they were not serving food.. They sent us to the Market House across the road.. At that point the children were hungry so we did not stop to check reviews of this one. I wish we had. The menu was mainly pub classics so four of us ordered burgers - one plain and 3 pulled pork. Plus one order of ribs. They were the worst burgers I have ever tasted - dry, tasteless and overcooked. The pulled pork was Ok but there was virtually no BBQ sauce so that was also quite dry. The chips were pale and dry and tasted of nothing. My husband asked for more sauce thinking that would help - they brought us some cold gelatinous gloop that tasted synthetic and nasty. My grandson who had ordered the ribs enjoyed them but had to scrape off the same sauce as he said it ‘tasted funny.’. Although we were all very hungry we left more than we ate. A horrible meal.

This Pub use to be amazing. Great food and great Service but sadly those days are long gone. Waited an hour and a half for the food and when it arrived it was very disappointing. Would definitely NOT recommend going here for a meal. One family left before their food arrived. Such a disappointment.

When here with our 2 grandchildren as Wetherspoons was full. Ordered chicken nuggets, beans & chips x 2, fish & chips and markethouse burger with chips. Chicken nuggets were awful and tasteless. Fish was just passable. Burger was dry with a cheap bun & tiny bit of salad. All chips were frozen oven chips, & only half could be stabbed with a fork. We all left at least half of the meals which cost £44.90. A lady asked if everything was alright, to which I said NO. She mumbled something and we did not see her again. The table appeared clean but was sticky. Avoid this place for food, there are plenty of other food places, cheaper and better.

Booked for a table for 2 Sunday carvery,as last year we had a fantastic one. After sitting at our table, we asked for a menu, as we wanted starters. Menu arrived on a order pad slip ,just roast dinner, pre plated in kitchen. Very disappointed, drank the excellent pint of Palmers IPA and left. We were really looking forward to our lunch, certainly will not return.

Me and my girlfriend came in for a spot of brunch and we’re greeted by the most helpful and cheery staff. The food was brilliant and had no faults. Would recommend to anybody in the area!!

Been here many times over last few years whilst in the area. Seating areas looked a bit grubby on floor etc. have to order at bar now, all the lovely previous staff not there. Took 45 minutes to arrive ans I ordered macaroni cheese and food was awful. Husbands burger was in pieces and dry as a bone. Cheap roll fell apart. Mac and cheese- well chef obviously has no idea how to make it, it arrived in a dish, only sauce was the undrained pasta water and had a smattering of cheese on Top. The waitress asked if everything was ok and I said not and that the meal was awful -she responded with oh ok, and walked off, no one bothered to ask again. Unfortunately I had paid up front due to bar ordering I assume this must be the only way they get to keep the money now! Will not be returning, cost £32. Worth £5 for coffee (which was Luke warm but tasty)

Excellent Sunday roast carvery, plenty of meat and a good choice of vegetables. Staff very friendly and helpful, would definitely recommend.

Lovely Sunday carvery for us today, usually pop in on a Saturday for Scampi. Food was delicious and good value. Look forward to our next visit.

What has happened to this place? It used to be the place to go for a buzzing atmosphere, great coffee and happy staff. Now it is empty, the coffee is poor and can only be made with full fat milk as they offer no alternatives and miserable, unhelpful staff with one member (the landlord) being downright rude. We will not return whilst under this ownership.

A party of us went for lunch. We were seated in a dingy backroom on a sticky table and which despite booking, wasn't set set up for us. The pub was quiet but we waited 40 minutes for our meals. When they arrived, the burgers were overcooked, the rolls very poor quality and the chips cheap and undercooked. My husband's lasagna was inedible. I don't know how they had the cheek to charge us. There is a feeling of the place being run into the ground and that noone cares. We are local and will definitely never go . back. It has only just reopened under new management but it's best avoided.

Disappointed after poor and slow service this lunchtime. I know things are difficult trying to work around lockdown restrictions still in place, but when you are marooned at your table unable to go get a drink and there is no interest from the waiting/ bar staff to see if you would like a drink it gets a bit frustrating!We sat and waited at least 8 minutes before our drink and food order was taken, the staff had no idea how the tables were numbered so food was being walked around the garden looking for its table.The food arrived before any cutlery or condiments and was going cold before these then arrived. We then placed another drink order with our server to eat with our meal, this never arrived, meal finished - still no drink or staff around. Finally someone came to clear the plates “did you want another drink?” “ oh we thought we had one coming” “ don’t worry I’ll get that sorted” still waiting....... we went in and paid drinks never came.

Excellent take away Sunday roast. Just fantastic and I’m sure will become our Sunday ‘thing’ now. Highly recommended. Well done team

We went to the Market House for a Pot of tea and to sit in the October sun. Just as we arrived, the table had been sanitized which is very reassuring. I placed our order and within a few minutes had our tea brought to our table. After a couple of visits to ask us if everything was okay we decided to have a light lunch. Our order was taken by a charming, friendly member of the team. Within a very short time our food arrived. We had Scampi, peas chips salad, with Halloumi fries and salad. We shared the meal, which was delicious and excellent value. I had a pint of lager and my wife a chilled water. At all times the serving team were very attentive but not overbearing. We had a great time and totally recommend a visit.

This place doesn't look like much from the outside, but don't be fooled - the food they serve is absolutely superb. My husband and I had a Sunday roast here. Four meats were on offer - beef, turkey, gammon, pork, and also nut roast. The beef is served rare so we avoided that. I had pork, and my husband had turkey. The staff were very polite and efficient ,and the food was served quickly. There was a large helping of meat served with: A yummy large Yorkshire pudding, roast potatoes, mashed swede, cauliflower cheese, broccoli, carrots, parsnip, green beans, stuffing and gravy! superb!! I managed to fit in a desert of chocolate brownie, which was beautifully presented with a strawberry and a scoop of ice cream. I have to say this is the best brownie I have had in a long time! If you are ever in Bridport, I recommend that you eat here - you will not regret it.

Excellent service, and very clean. The Covid-19 precautions were in place, but not obtrusive. We stopped here for a Sunday Carvery, and had roast beef, pork and turkey, with all the trimmings, which was delicious, and beautifully presented. We had pavlova for dessert, also very tasty and looked good.We would definitely return here.

We were recommended, whilst regular Bridport visitors we’d never been here before. Wonderful food and service.. I’d add my fish meal, sea bream was one of the best I’d ever had!

The lunch was good, a roast with plenty of vegetables and a choice to have a smaller potion. Good beer and wine too, well spaced out with friendly staff.

Came in here for coffee and stayed for lunch. Very friendly young lady served us. Food was good value for massive portions. Fish platter was huge with good bread and came out on a lazy Susan which was a nice touch. My parents shared it but would of been ample lunch for three of us so excellent value. The burger was a bit of a heavy texture for me so quite difficult to digest but the bacon and cheese and coleslaw were good. Chips were thin fries and disappointing. Coffees were on the weak side. Palmers beer very good. Like the atmosphere and service and would visit again.

Staying just up the road in Salwayash in a caravan park we were looking for fish and chips, due to the current restrictions we were so hungry we didn’t want to queue for the chip shop, almost next door was the Market House Pub, thinking we wouldn’t get in we tried on the off chance to see if we could have a meal. Staff were so welcoming, we had the dog with us, and she was welcomed too. We had a wonderful meal, and the bar maid recommended a very nice gin for me!

Decided to try as never eaten here. We stood by the door on entering, used the hand gel and then waited for staff to approach. One girl behind the bar saw us, but did not acknowledge us but continued to walk up and down behind the bar. She was not serving anyone the bar area was deserted, it was early 6pm booking. We had to shout across to her to say we had a table booked.once seated at our table we were told the menu was on a blackboard. Very limited and quite disappointing. I struggled to find something I wanted. Well two of us had gnocchi delicious one of us had the burger, very dense only managed to eat half, without the bun the chips were frozen skinny fries very uninspiring. We all chose icecream for dessert, the lady serving us said it would come in the tubs, not a problem. When she brought it, it was in glass dishes and it was the smallest ball of icecream any of us had ever seen. Not even enough to fill a tub. Once we had the bill we had not been given the 50% off soft drinks I asked if it was just on the food, yes was the response I then said that I was of the understanding that it included soft drinks. To her credit she took our bill away and adjusted it to include the drinks. So not the best for food. Disappointing all round.

I AGREE with all the bad comments noted wont go back.2 meals, one good. Even the seagull would not have wanted to eat just a plate of burnt frazzled batter. Fish was none ! Manager was defensive, instead of saying sorry, no efforts made to encourage us back, Avoid . The service staff were nice,. I wish I had taken a photo to share,

My family and I (9 people) where staying at a local resort and decided to book a meal on the eat out to help out deal. We rang and booked well in advance for the 4th August. We asked if they where doing the deal and a woman said quote "the boss is here I will ask him".she came back and said yes they where and took our name and number. We duly arrived at 18.00 as booked to be told that the offer didn't start till next week. Bearing in mind they had our phone number they could have rung us. Also the lady we spoke to couldn't seem to care less. Very poor show and 9 peoples money went elsewhere

We paused here for coffees yesterday: fantastic comfortable wooden chairs on the pavement with decent wooden tables.As ever, friendly, jovial service, delicious coffees, and plenty of inside space with nooks and crannies and comfy seating.There's a good selection of food here too, throughout the day.Love it here.Parking is sometimes possible on the road outside, but we tend to use the long-term car park at the Waitrose/west end of the town's high street: £2.80 all day, about 4mins stroll away.

I am a local and not visited since new ownership....silly me! It was just for a coffee and was a little apprehensive as not everyone can make a decent strong flat white coffee in town. The owner (I presume) was charming and jolly even though he was quite busy bringing out drinks. Coffee came with a biscuit (always a nice touch). Not sure if many know but there is a large terrace out the back too. Loyalty card given so deffo returning and will take a look at the menu next time.

We were in Bridport on holiday and had booked to go to the cinema. We went into the Market Place at 4pm to ask if they were open for food. Although they normally open at 6pm the lovely Italian chef was at the bar and he said he could cook us something. He made us some delicious crab pasta which was wonderful. All the staff were extremely welcoming and friendly and we wouldn’t hesitate to recommend visiting here.

Staff were very friendly and the decor is nice. However, we waited 40 minutes for our food. The cauliflower was so hard that it was impossible to cut and the rice that came with the curry was solidly stuck together. They were unable to provide any mango chutney with the curry.

How lovely to return to the Market House...not been here for a year...We met up with family for a coffee and catchup...ten of us plus 2 babies and buggies. The staff suggested we use the large semi-private area with huge table towards the rear...thanks guys. It was ideal, such a great space, ideal for between 6 and 14 people.Coffees and teas were excellent. My bacon sandwich/bap was superb. All good value.Lovely décor, comfy seating, plenty of space, tables, nooks and crannies.Access is on the level from the high street, and the staff are helpful and patient with buggies and walkers. Nice toilets too.Love it here.
