The George in Redbridge

I’m in here Good Friday, a week or so after the news broke that Wetherspoons have decided to exit this place. In a way I am sad, I have drunk many pints , bought many meals and had a lot of breakfasts in here. But it has some fundamental problems! As a cask ale drinker, I shudder every time I order a pint, knowing that young inexperienced bar staff, terrified of spilling a drop, will pull the pint so slowly ( often with no sprinkler!), so that my pint is as flat as a ……..! Worse is the fact that even though I have been a regular in here for 3 years or more, only one member of staff acknowledges me when serving, others just ignore the fact that they know me! There is a considerable amount of passive aggression by the bar staff to the customers, epitomised by the “Who’s next” shout, and ( in some cases) a complete absence of Please or Thank You!! Which makes the notices on the wall re customer aggression all the more ironic!!

Met up with some old friends here recently, the atmosphere was nice, it was quiet but not too empty. The food was lovely, cheap pub grub and staff were helpful and welcoming.

Service was a bit slow. The place is a bit gloomy (better lighting- brighten up decor?). It can get very busy.

The staff and service are always top-tier. Everyone is so nice and friendly! I came when it was steak night and the steak was excellent! Thank you :D

I like a weatherspoon it has nice clientel and always good beer.

One of my fave Wetherspoons. Nice old pub. Good atmosphere. Wanstead High St is always good for a wander. Good transport links. A older crew in there mostly.

Nice Wetherspoon directly opposite the tube station, plenty of seating including upstairs. Nice atmosphere, well worth a visit

Ways a good beer and a good place. I was served by Stephen and I have to say the experience with Stephen alone would make me return. He's a shining example of how customer service should be done. If only all staff in every pub were as good as him. Well done him.

Choice of beer always good. Quick service, friendly staff comfortable seating, plenty of space, great place to go.

Dirty place run alive with mice if they r in the bar area & seating area definitely in the kitchen. Eat at ur own peril.

I'm standing at the bar 3 staff standing talking in thd bar I asked if anyone could be bothered to serve and was just ignored the staff have no banter or I get the impression some just don't want to be there

Run of the mill Wetherspoons, needs refurbishing.

Hadn't been in the George for a while simply because we moved some distance away. Pleased to say it was very good. Great selection of beers.

Cheap and cheerful lunch..drinks prices were amazing, will be back, bit too many kids in daytime but I will hopefully return in an evening.

Ruined our New Years Eve Group of us chose this venue to celebrate. Was a terrible evening. We used the App facility to order straight forward drinks. Rounds were repeatedly brought out wrong. We went to the bar to raise this with the server making the drinks a tall lady with reddish dyed hair. Instead of apologies she repeatedly threatened to bar us there and then saying she was on her own and it was ‘not my fault’. She was rude beyond belief. A really horrible person this woman, should not work in a pub if cannot take the pressure. We decided after four rounds of wrong drinks to leave at 8pm and find somewhere more hospitable and professional.

Absolute terrible pub, Christmas Eve drug dealing in the toilets on the stairs drug use on tables told security did nothing about it took pics sent them to head office and guy selling on video . Told security just laughed

Careful with the car park, they're hot on the ticketing if you go over which I unfortunately found out but this a lovely pub, with good staff and decent food for the price.

Each for 2 hours, this wonderful place is a necessary break for myself and one of my best friends to chew the fat and talk absolutely nonsense. The food, decor and space in a friendly atmosphere gives us the best space that took us years to find. Peter

I got banned for failing to show my id had it on me but they didn't except the one I had I wasn't buying drinks my wife was buying with her friends. Then a waiter came over and started to take our drinks didn't give us a refund stole our money the man had been rude and racist to us making all of us uncomfortable then he said do not come back again. He said you know what you got yourselves banned and I ask why and he couldn't give a straight answer I went back a couple of days later anyway and talked to the manager he backed the waiter up even though he did not witness it. I live very near by and had been going there for years I went with my family for such a long time it has been more then a decade. AND NOW I AM BANNED. So upset about this. No-one will respond to this message

Excellent Lincolnshire sausage and mash. Nice selection of ales, but could be broader. Service a little slow, I thought. Still worth trying. Look for the plaque on the outside south wall opposite the tube station.

Probably the nicest Wetherspoons in London. Good atmosphere, quick service and an affordable pint.

I sometimes come here to meet a friend who lives in Bethnal Green, because it's convenient for both of us to travel to, and we both know what to expect - a decent selection of ales at lower than average prices, and a traditional pub atmosphere (which is not always guaranteed in a 'Spoon's). On this visit a couple of days ago, the service was particularly quick, in spite of the pub already being close to full by mid-afternoon (it's a favourite with Wanstead's pensioners). One of the bar staff was especially friendly and helpful (I thought he deserved a mention for his attitude)! We were very satisfied with the selection of ales, which included a couple from Redemption and some others from independent London breweries; all of the ones we had were well-kept. And amongst the 'craft' offerings was a beer from a brewery that's just around the corner from my local, which pleased me no end. We had food a couple of times during the several hours we were there - nothing particularly special, but served in record time. It saw us through until we left much, much later... This is not a pub for anyone looking for a young, buzzing atmosphere or a 'gastro' dining experience! But for what it does - i.e. the JDW model in an historical pub setting - its management makes a very good job of. Well done - I expect to make many more return visits!

A great place for a drink. Staff are friendly and helpful ID is checked on entry by security. Prices of drinks are slightly less than most of the other local drinking establishments. There is a car park at the rear and close to Wanstead tube station on the Central Line. Good to be back. Still a great pub

All poor slow clearing/cleaning table from customers before , I had to do it , waiter/waitress did not come to take order so done thru app, food over cooked , dry , cturkey dinner come with no gravy asked for gravy got it , it was less then warm and lumpy , mix grill ,large , dry like ut been under warmer for an hour dry , overall pretty rubbish

Posto fighissimo. Praticamente è un pub all'interno di un vecchio hotel. Davvero carino. Ho preso il rhamen, avendo solo quello come opzione vegetariana. Il cibo è nella norma. Ottimo rapporto qualità/prezzo.

Lovely pub. Great food, family atmosphere. Bring a book if you like and spend a few hrs surrounded by lovely people.

Nice old pub . Big ceilings and traditional. Probably goes back to railways (central line now) coming out to these parts. My mum lives down the road in one of those Edwardian style buildings. Used to like this place as a teenager (1970s) as the station is across the road great place for a pint

No pepsi, pepsi max or various other drinks from tap. App wasnt working, ordered one set of food and cancelled the other. The only one i ordered i didnt even get a drink even though i added one. Wasnt offered a refund after all this

Ceres,Katie and the lovely gentleman who served us when we were sitting at the window sill as there were no available seats really helped a couple of nurses who needed a break .they were so kind and treated so well. Thank you all. It is a busy watering hole, had 3 plates of yummy chicken wings for £15 and 4 bottles of blood orange cider for £10 had some delicious chips £5 all eaten with thus sweet Pepper sauce. Alos convenient that it is near Wantead line so my friends have easy access. Thank you young and hardworking people all so much for a wonderful evening. They were all smiling despite being busy. Their feet must ache after work. Please get them some class 1 compression garment as they need thus in their line of work.

It's a good pub. Good pub grub. At good prices. Lot's of seating, good beer. What's not to like?! I would say they don't ever cook my steak right n I've given up ordering it, but even then the cut of meat was good enough not to spoil the meal.

Takes about an on match days to drive here from Stevenage. Perfect for having a drink and food before moving onto the game. Food is good and priced well as is the beer. Its a Wetherspoons...enough said. Staff are friendly and quickly serve you after ordering on the app, all in all highly recommend 😀 👍

Just had the most embarrassing experience in the George Wanstead. I ordered two drinks on the app at the table, despite the pub being very quiet I waited over 20 minutes, I went to the bar to enquire, which was empty and saw my drinks waiting at the end. The barman brought them to me I said they were flat. With that he called the manager over who said that the drinks were taken to my table twice (total lie as we hadn’t moved why would we ? we had ordered drinks ?) she then accused me of threatening her staff (lie) after finishing our drinks we ordered another round, after paying on the app the manager came over and said they were refusing to serve us anymore ? I have been drinking in the George for 40 years and have NEVER come across such rude and threatening service. Accused of threatening the staff (everyone who knows me knows that would never happen).

Lunch orders were cancelled so no lunch orders being taken for anyone. This was way into the afternoon. Clearly understaffed. And the staff who were present were not interested. Absolutely poorest service I have had in a veery long time. Cannot recommend.

You can eat and drink cheaper than other similar places and you can enjoy the traditional pubs atmosphere 😉

My second visit, and not as full of students as it was last time. The festival ales were top notch. I loved the Titanic Cherry Porter! I also had a ham & mushroom pizza which to be honest was probably the best Wetherspoons pizza I’ve had so far.

Quite good food at a reasonable price. Generally good service and a rolling program of different beers at very low prices.

Since our first visit we have now been a few times. Not busy tonight. Sitting watching lots of buses passing . Opposite is Wanstead station, so car isn't needed.

Giving low rating because saw a cockcaroach last time and the hygiene is low.Carpets and tables were filthy. I can't imagine how the kitchen is!A shame because it's just a beautiful historic pub with nice food and price. Hopefully they improve .

Formerly the “George Hotel” rebuilt in 1903 : Respectable Edwardian “public house” with typical dark wood panelling, gloomy sober ‘n sombre decorative touches - oodles of space, nooks and crannies Scrupulously maintained to a good standard, the quirky interior celebrating local history, characters and events. Serving typical fare, with a good representative range of tipple. Staff unobtrusive and quietly efficient. Projects a settled air of tradition and probity.

U pay for what u get and the service was very good, fast and good

Good place for lunch. Was quiet and clean. Food was also good with decent portion sizes.

Best bar prices in the area (as usual for Wetherspoons). A large bar with a homely atmosphere. The service here was slow, bordering on glacial, on my several late afternoon/early evening visits. The staff don’t seem to be imbued with any sense of urgency. Indeed some of the staff resembled, in this respect, a horrendous amalgam of the management styles of Rishi sunak and Keir Starmer combined in one hideous, ineffective jumble. This slovenly service most probably indicates, in my (extensive) experience, a lack of proactive management supervision and/or effectiveness. I’m sure Mr Martin would be suitably unpleasantly surprised during one of his customary unannounced visits. Recommend for a great value drink and/or meal, especially during the (less frenetic) week.

Obviamente no vas a venir desde el centro de Londres hasta aquí a comer/cenar/desayunar, pero si te alojas por los alrededores mínimo tienes que venir por los precios primero y por la calidad. Comimos por 18€ (15 libras más o menos) dos personas y bastante satisfechos. Además, nos gusta mucho el que dejes pagado todo desde el momento en el que pides (esto se lleva mucho en todo Londres) y además tienen ofertas para los desayunos, horas y días donde la pinta es más barata. Vamos, todo un acierto. Seguro que repetimos estos días que andamos por aquí.

Nice pub, lovely traditional look and nice location; felt welcoming and was fairly busy on Saturday afternoon; the menu has good selection of English foods; I had a jacket potato with tuna filling, comes with a salad and I opted for an extra of coleslaw which was served in a very small side dish but it was a good meal. The only 'oh-dear' that springs to mind is that the table was very dirty, so I had to clean it down with my own tissues and anti-bac liquid.

Across the road from Wanstead tube station (Central Line). The road is the busy A12, but there is a pedestrian crossing near the entrance to the tube station. The pub building is of interest, with Corinthian style columns and stained glass windows. Toilets are on the ground floor, for a 'Spoons this isn't common. Only complaint I had was the bacon butty seemed lacking in bacon. The menu said it had 3 rashers, but it looked like two to me as said rashers didn't cover all of the bread inside. My colleague had a full English Breakfast and it looked great.

A magnificent Edwardian building built in 1903 to replace the George and Dragon that had been there for quite some time. Lots of room with tables out the front and another bar upstairs. The staff were friendly and the inside has loads of character with little nooks and crannies. Beautiful place and the toilets are on the ground floor as well. The Guinness was excellent as was the Doom Bar

Eggs Benedict is usually excellent in spoons, however this didn't quite hit the spot. Small amount of rocket, a bit passed its best and a muffin that could have been fresher.

Drink in the George a couple of days a week and it had really gone down hill. However yesterday the whole place was cleaner, more efficient and the shift supervisor/ manager who served us was polite and professional. Hope it stays that way 👍

Great comfy, tidy Wetherspoons, food was nice, service okay & our time there (3 hours) was great, nice atmosphere throughout. Like most other things in life lately, food portions have shrunk to embarrassing levels, the large breakfast used to be something to look forward to & was filling, now it's turned into a 'Less 4 More profit' small breakfast, wouldn't like to see now the size of the official menu normal sized breakfast.... Shame & Out of order, but all are doing the same....

Staff shortage, high stools on miniatures high tables in bar area. They haven't given it any thoughts. There is no atmosphere!

A great pub plenty of room and an upstairs too, outside seating plus a fair size beer garden at the back prices cheaper than the majority of of other pubs.

Great place to dine and I recommend the Thursday Curry deal.

Usually have no problems after coming in from a late shift of using this pub, the service is normally fine and the staff are friendly and very efficient. Sadly our visit yesterday was a complete disaster, I went there with a colleague for a after work drink but as soon as it was quarter past midnight I was barked at by a member of staff who was on the other side of the bar to drink up and make a move bearing in mind that I am new to the area and we was the first ones forced out even though thee as 5 tables of people left I truly feel that this is one bad apple regardless of if its a Sunday evening is not being compliant of the drink up time as I was more than willing to spend more money but drink up and leave by 00:20 . I feel that this particular maverick bad apple will be dealt with accordingly and hopefully he will be gone by our next visit

My Thursday hangout joint with my mate .she has her steak and I'll have watevz cheap and my non alcoholic beer and we chat for hours .gud atmosphere

It looks like a pretty pub with a really nice garden but I think that that this our first visit, there was a problem with the kitchen. We received the wrong breakfast, bread toasted on one side only, no butter, cold baked beads and solid fried eggs. Most of the staff were helpful but by the time we got the correct breakfast and ate fast, as our 90 minutes was almost up. I ended up with indigestion for eating so fast. Unfortunately I think we chose the wrong day to visit and will not be returning. I must mention the lovely members of staff who bought the children crayons and colouring pages and chatted to us. The pub also needs a second coffee machine downstairs as I had to queue three times to get my coffee, and sat down and returned to the machine as the queue was too long.

Hi i liked this pub.. Just came in today and they trying to implement app only which means no cash,cause mostly there was cash paid at the till before .. Still is serves like two bartenders for the whole big pub.. Waited like 20 min In line cause other lines were closed and it says use the app..It was my last time here.

On Saturday evening there was an extremely rude young male working behind the bar with blonde hair who was very aggressive and rude to customers who were standing by the bar, he is very lucky to not have got into a fight with a customer as he was shouting aggressively at customers much older than himself who were not any problem at all. I suggest he is re-trained by the business as it definitely lose customers with that attitude.

What a beautiful pub.... I spend my time some morning with my service user and we have a coffee. The pub is nice and relaxing and clean and also the staff are friendly and helpful towards me and my service user.

They do lovely food here. The service is good. In my 2 experiences in there yhe staff have been really nice helpful and pleasant. I will go there again for sure!

This is my uncles favorite hang out. Everytime I take him there I'm astounded by the prices. Half what I pay anywhere else. And the food is always good.

I always come to this pub as we are local in wanstead. I left my jacket on the table and went to play games. When I went after 20 mins my bottle of prosecco which had half bottle has been collected from the table. I spoke to the staff in the bar they said it was not their fault so means it is my fault I should carry the bottle with me. That was so rude as I can not carry the bottle outside when I go to smoke or when I go to the toilet. Bar staff told me to keep on eye. It is really dissappiointing. So you need to carry the bottle of prosecco/ wine when you ordered. It is really disappointing.
