Great pub in Wanstead, currently leased as part of the whetherspoons group but being sold it owner. Hopefully it'll stay a great local pub.

Very sad that a popular establishment is being closed down this week and being rurned into a "gastro-pub" for a totally different clientele.

Wetherspoons are closing The George this week and while some people don't like Mr Martin I like the real ales at sensible prices. Above that the staff are always helpful. I was one helping an older person down the front steps the other week. Good luck to the staff in their future work. Thanks guys.

My local for over 20yrs, shame, as according to local press, it is closing on 13th October.

A good place to go for a cheap drink

Cavernous Spoons in a nice old building, sadly soon to close I hear. Decent choice of ales, but not all on great form. Full of old people pushing peas around the plate. Meh!

Typical weathspoons, good value food and quick service. Staff very friendly and helpful.

Packed. A good spread of young and older people. The cheapest prices for beer anywhere.

This place is now being run in to the ground ahead of it closing. Severe lack of staff due to it closing soon. 40 minutes to queue and 35 minutes for the food to arrive. No hot chocolate available. Unable to fry an egg FFS because their grill isn't working and they're not prepared to fix it. Sorry as this used to be a nice and popular pub. They should just go ahead and close it as it's an awful experience going there now.

It is home away from home. An experience filled with adventures, culture and history.

Nice Wetherspoon directly opposite the tube station, plenty of seating including upstairs. Nice atmosphere, well worth a visit and spend an evening

Arrived in this place about 1830 on Tuesday 27 August. Imagine my surprise when, at about 1900, I heard a woman with black hair shouting and screaming. What’s so surprising about this at a Spoons, I hear you cry. Well nothing really…except that this woman was serving behind the bar😬. Anyway, as the evening wore on, my steak ‘meal’ was delivered (courtesy of that magical realm that is the internet). Alas, this thing (which included a baked potato) arrived without butter. I approached the very same woman at the bar and asked her to provide said item. I was a little sceptical at her response…because she responded immediately (if rather jadedly) and all this without enquiring which table I was sitting at. This did not bode well! Predictably enough, no butter (or anything resembling it) arrived. TOP TIPS FOR THE OWNER & MANAGEMENT: (1) this woman is a liability & should not be working here (or, arguably anywhere else that involves any given member of the human species). Alternative career advice? Perhaps working in a zoo?); (2) Tim Martin might like to reflect on his unequivocal (& unrelenting 🙄) support for BREXIT: Brexit means that he cannot really replace people like this because so few people in this country want to work in places like this for the wages & conditions on offer. So what’s the solution, Tim?? Disclosure: I own 10,000 shares in Wetherspoons…at the moment …

Just left the pub just now and I’m so angry. I ordered my drink via the app, and waited nearly over an hour and my drink didn’t come. Based upon my observations, they appeared to be short staffed and were struggling to do deal with the inflow of orders coming through. Being short staffed isn’t easy, but at least check in with your customers to see if all is good. It will be a long while before I return to this pub

Beautiful and well maintained old pub. Food is good and service fast.

Good food reasonably priced. Good selection of beverages. Unfortunately staff seem more attentive to orders placed using app causing queues at the bar.

Unfortunately the Sticky Korean fried chicken bowl was awful, same chicken bites and another chicken with some sauce on top but not cooked together, we can’t talk about Korean fried chicken if it’s not cooked in Korean style. Disappointed!

We were looking for a place in Wanstead where we could meet up and watch the Spain-France match with a teenager (14 years old). In England you can go to a pub with a teenager, but they should be accompanied by an adult. The day before, we went to the pub to ask if we could come with a teenager to watch the match. We got confirmation and came the next day. We sat upstairs. No one in our company drank alcohol. After 9 p.m., however, we were asked to leave the pub, explaining the pub's internal regulations, which state that teenagers cannot stay in the pub after 9 p.m., even when accompanied by an adult. Everything would have been fine if we had been told about it the day before. Then we wouldn't have come. And the bad taste remained.

Had a nice drink sitting outside

Very busy for a Thursday evening. We sat outside as the weather was good. A good selection of beers and reasonable priced.

A real community pub with groups and singles of all ages and demographics. Prices are great! Range on offer fantastic and always a welcoming atmosphere.

I live nearby and occasionally pop in The George usually on my own as most friends have moved further out. Once I have occupied a seat if I return to the bar I place a menu and/or a newspaper paper on the seat so barstaff (should) know someone is sitting there ? Quite clearly not, as after queuing at the bar the table is always taken when I return. Its a pity the barstaff aren't so efficient at putting all the empties in a dishwasher so promptly...... This is such a regular occurance

The black doorman with glasses and Steve (another black doorman) kicked my friend out for no apparent reason and when i tried to talk to them, they didn’t seem to like the truth. My friend was being kicked out for a drink he didn’t know he as supposed to have (it’s was a £5 drink from a local corner shop and it was a week prior). When I tried to simply talk to him he got frustrated that I was telling him the truth. The German woman manager (which the doorman seen to be afraid of) is also a problem, didn’t help at all, we spent 30 minutes trying to get her down. They manhandled me and ripped my tracksuit for just speaking to them. I cannot believe it, I’m traumatised from this experience. Absolute terrible staffing.

Lovely Old pub which has been there since 1903. The site was a pub before since 1716. Very high ceilings and plenty of space up and downstairs. Car park is not free but you can get a 90 minutes free with £5 spend.

Old fashioned family pub experience

Our first time going for breakfast. As we walked in it was like a ghost town then a member of staff appeared, no greeting, no smile or facial expression. As we settled at our table, we saw more staff members with no expression on their faces, it was like they were zombies. Food was alright and i would return for the food! The atmosphere is another thing- so cold and uninviting.

I visited the pub last night and wanted to share my experience. While I appreciate the efforts of the manager, who went out of their way to rectify the situation, the attitude of one of the barmen towards us was appalling. Upon receiving our drinks, ordered through the app, the bartender slammed them onto our table without acknowledging us, and proceeded to storm off. Despite our polite thank-you, his demeanour remained indifferent. The same demeanour persisted when we ordered dessert, with added hostility in his glare. I reported this to another barman, who was very friendly, and he promptly brought over the manager to our table. The manager was understanding and offered us a complimentary drink as an apology. It was because of these other staff members, along with the pleasant ambiance of the pub itself, that this review isn't a 1 star. I understand that staff may be tired or having a bad day. However, the level of hostility displayed by this particular bartender was unacceptable. While I don't expect extravagant service at a venue like Wetherspoons, basic courtesy and professionalism should be maintained. It's my hope that this feedback helps in improving the customer service standards, as individuals like him detract from the overall experience.

Fantastic Weatherspoons, plenty of space with a bar upstairs and down, located in a very trendy and busy area of Wanstead.

Disgusting service i went to the toilet they removed my food and a full pint when I confronted the lady, she said I should’ve put a menu on top of my plate Ask for my beer to be replaced she said I don’t think so and laughed I will never go back to that plcce again the lady has talked to get whats comeing to her

Everything always great at The George. The best!

The property is fabulous but not sure why it's not shown off to its own advantage. The food is very mediocre and really is not tasty unfortunately. The staff are good and really try. But they don't have the right food to work with although it's ok. Drinks are good value. Weatherspoons is good but should make the food tastier!

Very good place around that rotten area. Best price/service/food ratio, nkt just in that place but in Wheatherspoons. Nice board dedicated George Orwell inside.

I’m in here Good Friday, a week or so after the news broke that Wetherspoons have decided to exit this place. In a way I am sad, I have drunk many pints , bought many meals and had a lot of breakfasts in here. But it has some fundamental problems! As a cask ale drinker, I shudder every time I order a pint, knowing that young inexperienced bar staff, terrified of spilling a drop, will pull the pint so slowly ( often with no sprinkler!), so that my pint is as flat as a ……..! Worse is the fact that even though I have been a regular in here for 3 years or more, only one member of staff acknowledges me when serving, others just ignore the fact that they know me! There is a considerable amount of passive aggression by the bar staff to the customers, epitomised by the “Who’s next” shout, and ( in some cases) a complete absence of Please or Thank You!! Which makes the notices on the wall re customer aggression all the more ironic!!

Always a good breakfast 😋 cheap and cheerful. The George has that pub atmosphere. People drinking at 11am and a alcohol stench when entering the building! But food is OK and cheap =)

Great Weatherspoons! Expansive ground and first level dining & drinking areas.. Great atmosphere... Staff at The George were fantastic... Enjoyed great food and bottle of wine ... was served quickly and had a fantastic relaxing time!!

I cannot find the words to express my appreciation to Ella today - 29 Feb 2024, and also previously. Ella has excellent customer services skills and no matter how busy the pub is she is always smiling, greets customers and works extremely hard. The big thing that stood out for me is that she treats all customers and her colleagues with dignity and respect. Ella deserves a mega bonus and Wetherspoons should employ staff like her. Ella should be valued as she is such a credit to Wetherspoons.

Met up with some old friends here recently, the atmosphere was nice, it was quiet but not too empty. The food was lovely, cheap pub grub and staff were helpful and welcoming.

Service was a bit slow. The place is a bit gloomy (better lighting- brighten up decor?). It can get very busy.

The staff and service are always top-tier. Everyone is so nice and friendly! I came when it was steak night and the steak was excellent! Thank you :D

Ways a good beer and a good place. I was served by Stephen and I have to say the experience with Stephen alone would make me return. He's a shining example of how customer service should be done. If only all staff in every pub were as good as him. Well done him.

Dirty place run alive with mice if they r in the bar area & seating area definitely in the kitchen. Eat at ur own peril.

I'm standing at the bar 3 staff standing talking in thd bar I asked if anyone could be bothered to serve and was just ignored the staff have no banter or I get the impression some just don't want to be there

Hadn't been in the George for a while simply because we moved some distance away. Pleased to say it was very good. Great selection of beers.

Ruined our New Years Eve Group of us chose this venue to celebrate. Was a terrible evening. We used the App facility to order straight forward drinks. Rounds were repeatedly brought out wrong. We went to the bar to raise this with the server making the drinks a tall lady with reddish dyed hair. Instead of apologies she repeatedly threatened to bar us there and then saying she was on her own and it was ‘not my fault’. She was rude beyond belief. A really horrible person this woman, should not work in a pub if cannot take the pressure. We decided after four rounds of wrong drinks to leave at 8pm and find somewhere more hospitable and professional.

Cheap and cheerful lunch..drinks prices were amazing, will be back, bit too many kids in daytime but I will hopefully return in an evening.

Absolute terrible pub, Christmas Eve drug dealing in the toilets on the stairs drug use on tables told security did nothing about it took pics sent them to head office and guy selling on video . Told security just laughed

Careful with the car park, they're hot on the ticketing if you go over which I unfortunately found out but this a lovely pub, with good staff and decent food for the price.

Each for 2 hours, this wonderful place is a necessary break for myself and one of my best friends to chew the fat and talk absolutely nonsense. The food, decor and space in a friendly atmosphere gives us the best space that took us years to find. Peter

I got banned for failing to show my id had it on me but they didn't except the one I had I wasn't buying drinks my wife was buying with her friends. Then a waiter came over and started to take our drinks didn't give us a refund stole our money the man had been rude and racist to us making all of us uncomfortable then he said do not come back again. He said you know what you got yourselves banned and I ask why and he couldn't give a straight answer I went back a couple of days later anyway and talked to the manager he backed the waiter up even though he did not witness it. I live very near by and had been going there for years I went with my family for such a long time it has been more then a decade. AND NOW I AM BANNED. So upset about this. No-one will respond to this message

Excellent Lincolnshire sausage and mash. Nice selection of ales, but could be broader. Service a little slow, I thought. Still worth trying. Look for the plaque on the outside south wall opposite the tube station.

Probably the nicest Wetherspoons in London. Good atmosphere, quick service and an affordable pint.

A great place for a drink. Staff are friendly and helpful ID is checked on entry by security. Prices of drinks are slightly less than most of the other local drinking establishments. There is a car park at the rear and close to Wanstead tube station on the Central Line. Good to be back. Still a great pub

I sometimes come here to meet a friend who lives in Bethnal Green, because it's convenient for both of us to travel to, and we both know what to expect - a decent selection of ales at lower than average prices, and a traditional pub atmosphere (which is not always guaranteed in a 'Spoon's). On this visit a couple of days ago, the service was particularly quick, in spite of the pub already being close to full by mid-afternoon (it's a favourite with Wanstead's pensioners). One of the bar staff was especially friendly and helpful (I thought he deserved a mention for his attitude)! We were very satisfied with the selection of ales, which included a couple from Redemption and some others from independent London breweries; all of the ones we had were well-kept. And amongst the 'craft' offerings was a beer from a brewery that's just around the corner from my local, which pleased me no end. We had food a couple of times during the several hours we were there - nothing particularly special, but served in record time. It saw us through until we left much, much later... This is not a pub for anyone looking for a young, buzzing atmosphere or a 'gastro' dining experience! But for what it does - i.e. the JDW model in an historical pub setting - its management makes a very good job of. Well done - I expect to make many more return visits!

All poor slow clearing/cleaning table from customers before , I had to do it , waiter/waitress did not come to take order so done thru app, food over cooked , dry , cturkey dinner come with no gravy asked for gravy got it , it was less then warm and lumpy , mix grill ,large , dry like ut been under warmer for an hour dry , overall pretty rubbish

Nice old pub . Big ceilings and traditional. Probably goes back to railways (central line now) coming out to these parts. My mum lives down the road in one of those Edwardian style buildings. Used to like this place as a teenager (1970s) as the station is across the road great place for a pint

No pepsi, pepsi max or various other drinks from tap. App wasnt working, ordered one set of food and cancelled the other. The only one i ordered i didnt even get a drink even though i added one. Wasnt offered a refund after all this

Ceres,Katie and the lovely gentleman who served us when we were sitting at the window sill as there were no available seats really helped a couple of nurses who needed a break .they were so kind and treated so well. Thank you all. It is a busy watering hole, had 3 plates of yummy chicken wings for £15 and 4 bottles of blood orange cider for £10 had some delicious chips £5 all eaten with thus sweet Pepper sauce. Alos convenient that it is near Wantead line so my friends have easy access. Thank you young and hardworking people all so much for a wonderful evening. They were all smiling despite being busy. Their feet must ache after work. Please get them some class 1 compression garment as they need thus in their line of work.

It's a good pub. Good pub grub. At good prices. Lot's of seating, good beer. What's not to like?! I would say they don't ever cook my steak right n I've given up ordering it, but even then the cut of meat was good enough not to spoil the meal.

Takes about an on match days to drive here from Stevenage. Perfect for having a drink and food before moving onto the game. Food is good and priced well as is the beer. Its a Wetherspoons...enough said. Staff are friendly and quickly serve you after ordering on the app, all in all highly recommend 😀 👍
