The George in North Hertfordshire

Popped in last Sunday for a roast, turns out they'd only recently started doing them again and we're so glad they had, It was delicious and exactly what we were hoping for! The staff were so friendly and made sure we were well looked after. Can't recommend enough

The George is one of the last traditional family run pubs in Hitchin with two cosy charming fireplaces. They also do an amazing Sunday roast! The pub is very dog friendly and welcoming we love it here

What a wonderful hidden gem, a quaint little pub, with so many alcoves and nooks of olden times to be found. Comfy seating, sofas around a open fireplace, and great outside seating too. Plus the added bogarts lounge upstairs too. Our first time here and certainly won't be our last. Very friendly,welcoming place to be.

me and my friend got refused entry with REAL ids because “they were fake” as we were too pale in our photos. the woman used a normal torch instead of a UV light to check. i’ve of my friends got let in but we left. was rude and told they would’ve taken off ours. will not go for drinks again as very disappointed. i’ve been let in many times before but will not go again as very upset. start using actual UV light to check id!! (i work at a pub in hitchin and that’s what you have to do)

Decent drinks, decent prices. Staff always friendly. Cosy inside. Haven’t tried the food yet!

Unbearably loud music. Can't hear yourself think let alone talk to your friends. You can hear it from the end of the road if it further! I love good music but just crosses that line into silliness with the levels of bass.

What a treat, generous portions, hog in the hole is a must and don’t leave without trying the Sunday “sundae”, very friendly staff, one to repeat.

Good dj on a saturday night playing a range of old indie tracks and post punk.

Cold (fire lit but not attended)and whilst they pride themselves on music, Saturday night and the TV is in showing the stuff people who come out want to escape on ITV. Really?

Been in twice this week, once for a casual drink when it was quiet and received lovely service from the day staff. Went in again on the more crowded Friday night and got the sane excellency care, served quickly and treated really well

We popped in to this pub for a drink as it looked welcoming from the street. We found a nice cosy seating area in-front of the log fire so decided to stay and enjoyed a Sunday Roast Dinner. The standard Roast Dinner size was massive so we opted for the small option which was more than ample and very flavoursome. The place was clean and the staff were friendly, we will definitely be back.

Lovely pub - We popped in for a drink while mooching around Hitchin. The staff are really friendly and after overhearing some other customers we decided to have some lunch. I had lamb and my wife the chicken. It was delicious - We had a nice chat with the landlady you could tell she really cares. She was really pleased we had enjoyed our visit. Great value and a great to find and a repeat visit is imminent.

Went out on the 17th October for drinks and just wanted to say how good the security was, one of them made sure I got home safe and stayed with me until my Uber got there, just a little thing but makes me as a woman feel safe and wanted to say Thankyou

Had not been to the George for a long time has changed a bit. But for the better a great pub friendly reasonable prices will definitely be returning.

Decent service and beer and a pleasant garden During our visit I needed to use the facilities Neither cubicle had a lock that worked Consequently I opted for the toilet that was not clogged with toilet paper and was not covered in excrement with flies buzzing about Unfortunately this proved to be a dubious choice as belatedly I discovered there was no toilet paper Thankfully I had an adequate supply of tissues Disgraceful Avoid

Great pub. Friendly staff, had a really nice atmosphere. Not been in for about 10 years. Real mix of ages, everyone getting on well. Not louder as the night progressed with the in-house dj doing his thing. Will definitely go back. Drinks Not too badly priced either.

Great pub, lovely staff (+super friendly owner), good food. Decent place for a relaxed pint during the afternoon, or for a full on night-out during the evening.

Extremely rude staff. Was very rude when asking and checking IDs, I understand that checking ID’s is needed when someone looks under 25 but there is no need to be rude. Staff obviously like the power of being rude and checking them as the staff member scratched my ID multiple times even after it was proved it was real. They should think twice about treating customers better as I will never be returning. In response to your reply i would like to state that i was not rude at all to your staff, even when they were rude to us I still was not rude to them. Your reply just highlights the same level of rudeness.

The best roast dinner I’ve had in a long time for under £10 the ribeye melts in ur mouth & the roast potatoes 👌🏻

Had a fantastic vegan burger, and homemade chips at the weekend. The staff couldn’t have been friendlier, the chef promising something special and delivered. Lovely old pub, nice fire, friendly staff and great food. What more could one ask for!!!

Lively place on the Saturday night we visited. A bit tight but more room upstairs later on. Good fun.

Lovely pub, however I was turned away for food because they couldn't guarantee that they could keep me safe as I have nut allergy.

We went to the George on Saturday lunchtime. Fantastic friendly welcome from Mickey and Darren. A great cosy pub with an open fire. We really enjoyed our chats with them and some delicious vegan burgers. Thanks - we'll be back!

Tried to go for a drink in the George with a friend on 18th December and was told I couldn't access the pub unless I had evidence of vaccination. Fair enough I thought, so I went home and got my covid vaccination card. I had both jabs and the booster. My friend already had her card on her. We returned with my evidence to be told, I needed personal I D. I told the bouncer that he needed to tell people that at the time of refusal but as it happens, I did have ID. Another bouncer then told me that we still couldn't get access. By which point, I decided I didn't want to access the pub as it was pointless dealing with people on the door like that. So we left. Just a warning to others who might want to go there. I personally.wouldn't bother again! In my opinion, the pub need to check out who they employ as bouncers!

Lovely cosy pub with a fire going last Sunday. Had an amazing roast with all the trimmings, even mash, and I liked how you can choose your portion size. Huge gravy boat too! My fiance had beef and I had gammon, making sure I left room for chocolate fudge cake and ice cream. All delicious and friendly service. We will definitely be back!

We stopped in Hitchin for a walk through and lunch then bumped into this establishment which had a delicious roast!! Recommended.

Apart from the good atmosphere and the friendly staff. The Sunday roast is excellent! Meat actually from a Butchers and the veg/potatoes are excellent and if you like your GRAVY then definitely come here for your roast dinner. You might be pleasantly surprised! Best I’ve had in a long time eating out for a Sunday roast dinner. Well done guys. Will be back!

Service is quite slow, they really need more help. The house wines are not good but the atmosphere helps lift one's spirits.

Beer is limited. Food is OK. Staff are pleasant. Seating outside is nice.

This pub really is a hidden gem! I went in for a Sunday roast and quite frankly it was life changing! Roast dinner with all the trimmings with a roaring open fire next to me.. the Pub I understood has recently been refurbished it’s warm and light inside the staff are also on point with the covid rules In place no one was allowed in without a mask that I saw & the bar staff will kindly remind you to mask up if you leave the table. So all in all great pub amazing staff & top notch grub .

My friend was let in no problem and later left to look for a friend who'd gone missing. When trying to get back in his ID wasn't accepted despite it being a legal verification of age, after having spent £15 on drinks. We're going to be in touch with the ID distributors, Validate UK, to make sure this won't happen in the future.

Staff are super friendly, great food and a nice selection of various drinks. Live music nights are always top quality and generally a lovely atmosphere!

A group of us visited August bank holiday and will not return until there is significant improvements which are achievable. The Tribute was off but the barmaid was not interested, felt as though she was being put out by serving people. The toilets were terrible, dirty, smelly with water all over the floor and being a sunny BH flip flops were the order of the day but waders would of been more appropriate. The whole pub could do with a good clean, some customer service training for the staff and look after the beer - this could be a decent pub.

I love the George. Friday & Saturday nights have a DJ & the music is fantastic!

This good pub comes alive at the weekend with DJs playing all sorts of tunes and packing the place with dancers until 1am then a small bar upstairs until later. Pop, EDM, Reggae, 80's, Ska - you never know what you're going to get until you get there (well you probably would if you looked it up in advance).

A comfortable pub with an excellent pint of Tribute when I called. It was fairly quiet, but the landlady was on her own, so service was a touch slow, but other than that it was a fine place.

Had a nice lunch ,decent burger nice quality bacon and cheese as Toppings .Nice fries and decent portion of colslaw
