The General Havelock pub in Hastings

Great little pub that hosted some great gigs for local artists, I would recommend to anyone visiting the area to come in for a relaxed drink with great people.

Full of character and characters. Low prices excellent friendly staff. A proper old fashioned pub.

The Havelock always had the worst reputation and few cared when it closed down for a few years. But I decided to give it a go, despite their being more security staff than customers, very naive of me. So I was told it was Karaoke, I went in, was told by the bar staff that it wasn’t but decided to stay, I spoke to one senior lady and she said she didn’t want to sing but asked for a song. I tried to find the DJ and he was at the bar, eating…….fair enough so I asked him about playing the song,,,,,,,,he seemed incensed and this drew the attention of the door staff who were outnumbering the customers……suddenly and aggressively, the staff removed me from the premises……as if they were bored and just relished the opportunity for some “action”. Laughably, you get better trained door staff who are not children, begging to bring this into the playground, The town centre is dying, the fact that this is opposite Wetherspoons says everything; it’s all about the old town where these small life nothings wouldn’t see the light of day, relics from another time

Love the tiles on the wall! I can do without the (too) loud music, the fruit machines, the ever present bouncers, and the large tellies. Beer is good value though, and this pub has a better pub atmosphere than the Spoons across the road. I drank Gunnesss. Price OK (£3.95), but quality so-so.

Easily the skuzziest pub in Sussex. Not a GCSE nor a single braincell to be found among the low life petty criminal clientel who frequent this den of iniquity. Avoid like the plague unless you fit in with the local riff raff.

Great place for drinks and music. Friendly locals and bar staff. Ideal location.

Very old pub central to Hastings with the single most beautiful walls in the whole town.. old literal work of art in tiles.. worth avin a pint just for a butcher's at that.. set up for footy also.

First time in there last Saturday night.. dj was playing ripping d'n'b.. not many punters but that was just fine as left more room for dancing to the banging tunes. Only downside.. my god was it hot in there 🥵

Had a couple (?) of beers in here whilst on a trip to Hastings. Staff were lovely, locals friendly and the drinks were well priced and served. Try it!

Old boozer in Hastings. Full of jovial regulars having a few beers and watching the Olympics. Met an old fella outside who was barred from coming inside but could have a pint outside. Amazing life he led. Had been shot in Korea, lived in Greece and Sri Lanka was married 5 times with kids all over and now seeing his dosage out between the pub the bookie and his "girl". He told a great story. When it rained the landlady forgave him and let him come in. A great little boozer basically.

Felt really welcome by the locals and the landlord. A few laughs, cheap beer, football. Perfect after a days sightseeing. The wall tiles are amazing!!

They have dropped the general so it is just the havelock which threw me from the last time I was her. Not a great selection of ale. But a few shots in and you would drink anything. Much better vibe in here then the other pubs we visited today. The lad behind the back was rushed of his feet being the only member of staff but always had time to chat and answer questions.

Friendly welcome, reasonably priced beers, and historic tiling depicting the battle of Hastings, and the eponymous General Henry Havelock.

For quite a long time this was a really nice pub. Since it came under new management it has become awful and is apparently "fun". It was the last good pub in this part of town but now you might as well go to Yates'.

An average pub serving some good ales. They do a good roast on a Sunday.

It used to be a five star pub. Went in there yesterday and got charged London prices so it's lost a couple of stars from me.

It was amazing but the Havelock is now closed. The chef works at the Harrow now. I'll be eating there from now on.

Quite a nice pub but no real ales so had to have larger. I gave two stars because I was charged the most I've paid anywhere for a pint of larger and a small glass of wine.

Definitely the best pub in Hastings without a doubt so full 5 stars from me.... very friendly and relaxing atmosphere with brilliant reggae nights too!!.

No food Mondays or Tuesdays despite food adverts outside. No plain crisps. No reason to go back.

First time for 35 years. Good ale and friendly staff. Prices have gone up mind !!

We were cogitating, looking at the menu, when the very friendly barista (named JJ) came over and told us it was nearly 6 o'clock and the chef was due to go off duty but if we ordered even a minute to 6, the chef would stay and do the biz! We were very pleased at such excellent helpfulness and decided to order. I had chicken curry which was tasty but not very generous. However the rest of the meal was filling. My friend had trout and an unusual vegetable called samphire (she didn't like the samphire). Her boiled new potatoes with a waxy texture were just brilliant. We liked the tiling and other decor. Very nice. We loved JJ - such a nice chap, eager to chat and he called us "lovely ladies"! haha

Absolutely loved this pub, loved all the tiling on the walls. Friendly service and the ploughman's lunch I had was lovely. Plenty on the plate - would definitely go back!

This is the best pub I have ever been to in Hastings. Very friendly and helpful staff. Wide range of beers and speciality ciders. The staff will go the extra mile for all their customers. Credit and debit cards accepted. Clean, airy and spacious, especially in summer.

Great food and Fantasic atmosphere right in the Heart of Hasting town centre

Finding ourselves starving at 5pm on a Tuesday, I remembered seeing a sign outside this pub offering roasts on Sundays and Tuesdays. It was just after 5pm so I rang and the very helpful barman told me he'd keep the roasts on if we could get there asap. We arrived 20 minutes later to a friendly face, and ordered two roasts. They were huge plates of food - with 5 veg, all well cooked. At £6.95 it was excellent value. Dan, the barman, was very helpful, and it's nice to have such good customer service in a boozer. Thanks for the feed :)

With a Yates and a Wetherspoon bar as neighbours you would have thought this pub should have gone to the wall ages ago.

We went there today with 15 students to get Sunday Roast. We had not booked a table in advance - but we were accepted with a big smile from Holly and Dan who did everything to make us feel good. The food came right away - and it was good although the meat was just a bit too dry.

We came a couple of times during our weekend in Hastings and on both occasions we had food. Saturday afternoon we had a couple of panini's which were lovely, on the Sunday we had the lunch which parts of were really nice but the meat had no flavour. The service was excellent and the 2 young lass behind the bar were both very welcoming and couldn't do enough for us. Thank you

The Havelock is much more inviting than you would expect from the disastrous central location. Open-plan beer garden in the street makes a welcome change from covert street drinking. Friendly people. Good ale.

Brilliant service and good, fresh cooked meals. Always happy to go back. Only downside is that they don't have a downstairs toilet for anyone with mobility issues.

A great centre of town pub, lovely staff

I went on a Saturday afternoon. The place was pretty busy but the friendly bar staff kept the machine moving. Fair selection of beers and ales - the menu looked reasonably priced though I didn't partake. I would definitely go back for another peaceful afternoon.

Had a couple beers early afternoon, Eclectic mix of customers which made for a good atmosphere. Not the cheapest but very pleasant. Bar staff were good. Compared to the Yates bar next door only one winner.

Popped in here for a Sunday Roast and was pleasantly surprised as the food was served fairly quickly and the staff very friendly - the nut roast was good but a bit stodgy for me but that’s just my preferences

Real pub, almost spittoons and sawdust. Decent pint though.

Nice and authentic English pub with a friendly staff and great choice of local beers. Pity that they are not serving food in the evening at the moment.

just visited to sample beer which was good but at a ridiculously high cost of £4.20 per pint totally unjustified compared with other establishments in Hastings and other south east towns who charge less. they They may succeed by their good food reviews but if you do not eat there give it a miss and await new ownership. Weatherspoons across the road charge almost £2 less a pint offering the same good quality.

Best of all the central pubs, great trad old style, unsure of how long been here but looks very old.
