Food very tasty, air conditioning too cold, service not helpful.

I ate here 2 times and it was very very nice. Great quality food, cooked very well. Breakfast was great and evening meal too was lovely. Lost 1 star, only due to the waiter who kept forgetting things for example a side order of fries and the price. The breakfast was quite expensive. Overall I’d certainly come back and eat here, but I’d need to get saving up !!

A Waitress! A Waitress! My Kingdom for a Waitress! Oh, the bittersweet tragedy that did befall me at The Gates, in Richmond Hill! Upon entering, I was filled with hope, ready to feast like a king in the enchanting ambiance that whispered promises of splendor. But alas! What cruel fate awaited me! "Waitress, waitress! wherefore art thou waitress?" Forsooth, not a soul did attend to my needs! I, who came to be served, was left to fend for myself, a guest abandoned, wandering like a lost spirit in the twilight. What sorrow! What despair! That I, a humble patron, should be made to fetch mine own victuals—oh, the ignominy! And then, to tip or not to tip—that was the question! For I was presented with a bill most princely for service that was but a phantom! My blood did boil, my heart did rage, yet I stayed my hand out of love for my gentle companion, whose tender heart could not bear the storm of my fury. I leave this lament not just as counsel, but as a jest of sorts, a tragicomedy of errors. Heed my words, oh keepers of The Gates, and may no other noble soul endure such neglect. For surely, such offenses most foul must be righted, lest your good name be tarnished! *** for anyone from the Gate trying to make sense out of this : - went to your restaurant with my girlfriend. We were outside on the back. Only time we had access to service was when they brought us our orders. To order anything I had to go to the bar. Between meals ( 2 mains + 1 bottle of wine ) nobody gave us any attention, which we needed. I was going to let you guys know, as I was paying 12.5% for service but my super polite girlfriend didn't let me do it. So I told her I would leave a review, but would be extremely polite so she didn't have anything to worry about. Food was excellent, atmosphere really good, but please do pay attention to your guests sitting outside, specially mid-afternoon when you are not too busy. Thanks

We chose the gate for my partner’s birthday lunch, as we had been once before and it was good. Sadly, this was a really disappointing experience. I’d usually speak to someone on the day but honestly I was so fed up by the time we left, and it was so hard to get any attention from the staff team, I didn’t bother. I was really well looked after on arrival by a member of staff - I was waiting for a while as my partner was at the spa. Sadly, once my two guests arrived, things just went from bad to worse. Really inattentive service, and really just a sense that the staff didn’t care about customers at all. It took ages to get to order, then we sat for nearly 20 minutes trying to get someone’s attention to clear our table. At one point I caught a member of staff eye, who smiled, waved, and the walked in the opposite direction! I do wonder what he thought I was trying to communicate! We sat and watched four staff talking, standing together, leaving one colleague to clear a table, and seemingly studiously avoiding the chance to note that we were even there. The restaurant was quiet as it was the afternoon before the euros final, so it wasn’t that it was really busy. Even if that had been the case, it was just really disappointing and not what I wanted for a special birthday. The food was fine - a fairly average Sunday roast that looked novice but was a bit bland, and decent desserts. My cheese plate was disappointing with unripe, cold brie and some equally cold goats cheese. Not great for £12. I’m gutted at this experience as I don’t have a lot of money and this was meant to be a special treat. I really hope this was a one off, but I don’t think I’ll risk it as although not outrageously expensive, the gate is hardly a budget option, and there are far better experiences nearby. Do better, the gate.

The food here is quite nice, we got the tempura prawns (£4 each) not sure about that price as it’s mostly the inedible head that makes up the size. We also got the fish and chips and the seafood burger which were fine flavour and portion size. What was not great was the speed of service and just plain misinformation about offers the hotel had on. We had booked a stay there which should have included a 3 course set menu or £35 off the menu per person but what was excluded was that there was in fact no set menu (some hotel HQ hiccup apparently) and the £35 was just off of their very limited Sunday menu! We were only told about these things after we had to ask directly. The service was very slow, we even asked for the bill to come with our dessert as we had plans after dinner which we were running late for. Overall.. a bit average, convenient if you’re staying at the hotel for a leisurely time but I wouldn’t travel here specifically for the restaurant.

I dined here recently whilst staying at the hotel, and what a treat it was. Great variety of food and beverages, my drinks and food were served super fast and everything was a 10, amazing value for money, quality and service was top. Still dreaming about the food I are here. My pictures do not do it justice, I 100% recommend the shakshuka too, I ate that up before I realised I had not taken a picture.

The best test of customer service is what is done when things don’t go right. And let’s be honest, things can occasionally go wrong in even the very best of places. My daughter and I had afternoon tea at the Gate after a lovely few hours in the hotel spa. Despite having notified them in advance that my daughter is a vegetarian and has a couple of food allergies, confirming this with the staff on reception and our waitress, we were brought the wrong food including some items with the allergens in. It transpired that there had been a mistake in the kitchen, a shift change, and a compete breakdown in communication behind the scenes. Thankfully her allergies are not life-threatening so now serious harm occurred but clearly there were some issues that needed to be sorted out so that a more serious incident could not occur on another occasion. We spoke to the manager who took the matter very seriously and assured us that procedures would be checked and tightened up and he also invited us to return for another meal. Two months later we took him up on the offer and had a delightful meal. It was clear that the allergy issue was being handled extremely carefully which was really reassuring. In addition, the staff were charming - and we could see that this was with all customers, not just for our benefit, and the food delicious, well presented and quick to arrive. All in all, a great evening. Particular thanks to Constantin and manager Jacob.

I have been in Richmond on business for a little over 2 weeks and this is truly the worst restaurant here. The food is flavorless and everything I ate came from a freezer. The head chef needs to be fired. The staff is incompetent. The bartender takes 10 minutes to make one cocktail. I requested regular water from three different servers and when it finally showed up it was bottled and they charged me for it. Just horrible. Shut it down!

Yorkshire puddings were nice, which was the only thing unfortunately. Failed to recognize the 'roast' element on the roast beef which was an even grey across in stead of shades of pink. It seemed like the beef was microwaved. The 'gravy' was see through and absolutely tasteless. General underseasoning and issues with temperature of food. Never again for me!

Arrived for our booking and where shown straight to our table. Service was speedy and food was good. Veggie Sunday roast was a nut roast, a full range of roasted vegetables (carrot, parsnip and potatoes), side of cauliflower cheese and kale. We didn't have deserts. There is a nice outside seating area, I will try and come back when the weather is right for outside seating.

The food is good here but the atmosphere is non existent and the kitchen is open with 4 chefs who laugh, shout and joke around. It spoils the whole experience

We went for afternoon tea (we were gifted a voucher, otherwise it's £32 per person) and although it's bottomless drinks, which were nice, the food that comes with it was not at all tasty, in fact, a few things I thought were stale and not fresh. A few items we could not eat past one bite because they were simply not nice tasting (probably off). Both me and my partner were not feeling well later that night. I am very sad that the quality was so poor for such a lovely looking place. We were supposed to celebrate getting married and that afternoon is not the nicest memory. Avoid this place for afternoon tea.

Awful experience at the Gate for afternoon tea. Quality of food was poor. Food arrived 45‘ after tea after several requests…Service was bad: staff spilled food and did not clean the table until asked….ashamedvthat we invited someone to such a bad experience!

Went with friends for a pre Christmas dinner. We shared a lovely burrata as well as chicken liver pate which was delicious. I had mushroom risotto which was also excellent. My main gripe is that we had to pay £10 to park our car but we didn't see any information about this until we were leaving the car park after eating. It seems an excessive fee for the privilege of eating a meal. Left a sour taste in our mouth.

We initially came for Sunday brunch but changed our mind to dinner. The service was good, the food was so tasty and the atmosphere was lovely.

We had an excellent experience at The Gate Richmond as part of a package with Harbour Hotel and Spa. The food is excellent and the environment beautiful. Like other harbour hotels they have an eclectic range of artwork . Service was great too.

Incredible food, romantic atmosphere and the staff were so lovely! Attentive but not in your face. And the cocktails were to die for!! We will definitely be back!!

We came as we were staying at the hotel. The food was tasty and the set menu wasn't bad value, cocktails were also nice, the red wine we picked was over priced for the quality we felt. Issues here are the lighting / vibe just aren't great cause the spotlights are too strong and it's not busy. Main issue is once it gets past 10pm (even though the bar area is open till 12) the staff all seemed to stop coming to tables and really only focus on cleaning up and setting up for the morning. We were sat finishing our wine and they were sweeping and moving rubbish around which wasn't great. We asked (as they were cleaning) should we move to the bar to be out of the way or should we leave and they said stay and have another drink but then no one came to take that order for a long time or make the drinks or eventually do the bill... Just a bit meh.

Last time I will be going to the Harbour Hotel. They have introduced paid parking. While I understand that people have been using it as a free place to park, I think their prices are extortionate. I was charged £7 for 1 hour 1 minute. Dreadful. I don't mind paying parking if it's reasonable as in £2-3 but £7 is ripping customers off. If we use the hotel we should park for free. I wouldn't mind but the coffee was cold, spilled down the side of the cup and in the saucer. Won't be returning. Pity, as I used to frequent a lot for coffees and lunches. Far too expensive now.

I've now visited this restaurant twice - in 2021 and 2023. In 2021 I gave it 3 stars. In 2023 just a single star and based on my visit today that is generous. The service is just dreadful. The staff are friendly and welcoming, but they just don't appear to be managed. Dishes wait at the serving area for ages with no one ensuring they are delivered to tables. Our simple order of two focaccia starters took about 20 minutes to prepare and even then only a single portion was prepared and we had to ask for it to be served. No plates were provided, again we had to ask for these. The second portion of focaccia didn't arrive before they brought our mains. Who knows why they can't prepare literally 8 slices of focaccia and serve it in less than 20 minutes. My main of a burger was barely warm. The rest of the food was ok. But there was simply no attendance from waiting staff to top up glasses, ask whether additional drinks were required or even if we wanted dessert. We decided to sit in the garden and asked if we could order some coffees. This was met almost with incredulity as if no one ever asks this. When we ordered a bottle of prosecco when the coffees arrived this order went nowhere it seems and we had to go into the restaurant to ask where it was. Apparently not all waiting staff can take orders properly. The restaurant wasn't amazingly busy, but the staff did seem to want to preference a table with a large party on it at the detriment to everyone else. It didn't help that the person who seemed to be the manager spent most of their time with their head buried in their phone. To top off the visit I paid a not insubstantial £15 for 4 hours parking. I wish I'd checked the tariffs first as I would have happily left a lot earlier. I hope from this description the staff read this and realise who I am - especially the manager. The restaurant has what seem to be competent staff, but they aren't managed. A good restaurant needs an attentive manager. Let's hope the Gate gets one soon!

My friends and I had a lovely lunch outside on the patio area at the Gate. The greens and grains salad is very tasty and healthy. Our waitress Gabriela was very attentive to our table, very pleasant and polite which made our lunch very positive as a whole. Will recommend and return!

Currently staying in the hotel. Went to simply get a drink at the bar. Was told to take a seat and then proceeded to wait 15 minutes without anyone coming over to take an order. Others around us were having the same problem. Voted with our feet. Won’t be back.

We popped in for a late brunch. Service was excellent and friendly. No issues with then giving us a table without a reservation unlike the hotel next door. We sat outside in quite a lovely garden with nice comfortable furniture. Everything felt very clean and new. Food was quite good but not excellent. We only had brunch items with a couple of sides. If I had to complain about anything is that the toast under the avo and poached eggs was so tiny they tried to hide the fact with kale. The drinks menu was extensive and not overly priced considering the area. Sadly we didn't have time for drinks but will definitely have some next time.

I have been to The Gate Restaurant many times and I love the food and the atmosphere! My favourite food is the cheese soufflé with haddock. Last time I have been there, a waitress called Gabriela looked after me and my friends and she was very kind. Thanks!

Lovely stay at the Richmond hotel with clean rooms, spa and gym. Great service at reception in the hotel and front of house at The Gate! Chef and team need some lessons on cooking and hygiene. Real shame with the food, both experienced delays with food and roast beef was rare bleeding meat. Hair of some sort in cauliflower cheese. Undercooked koftas now my husband. Not a great anniversary day trip! Oh well love harbour hotels.

We had a large group of us for afternoon tea and the service and food was amazing! They catered for all dietary requirements and everything was so smooth. The decor and garden are stunning! Couldn't recommend more.

We enjoyed a wonderful Roast Pork dinner with so many variations of vegetables that were all well cooked & tasty. The cheese plate was full & varied & the ice cream on the affogato was good quality & creamy. The staff were friendly, helpful & polite & not over attentive. I like how the room is set into three areas depending on what kind of mood you were in… cosy, light & airy, fun & quirky. My only disappointment was that we weren’t offered the full al a carte menu because it was a Sunday night so I didn’t get my ribeye steak I was hoping for, but apart from that minor flaw I would highly recommend a visit to this beautiful restaurant.

The quality deteriorated rapidly in this restaurant. We had fond memories of last year and came back for an evening of celebration but left disappointed, and we spent £140!! The dishes were well below average. They gave us a glass of red that was essentially vinegar. The waiter was kind and the place is nice, but that alone cannot make up for the poor cuisine and the inflated prices. We will not come back

We were staying at the hotel, so we had dinner and breakfast. Drinks were great also the staff. Food was disappointing. I ordered a halibut with clams and most of the clams were closed and broken meaning they weren’t good to eat, I’m pregnant and I was really afraid to get sick, I complained but nothing was done. Breakfast also disaster, pastries were undercooked, poached eggs overcooked, sourdoughs so hard like a Ryvita. Definitely never coming back, unless it’s just for drinks.

We had dinner and breakfast included in our hotel package. There were plenty options on the menu to choose from and the staff were attentive. I really loved the decor as well. Where I was let down just a bit is with the flavours of the food were a bit bland. I had to add salt to everything and ask for extra sauces to enhance the meals.

We had an evening meal and breakfast at The Gate. The food and service on both occasions was excellent. The menu was varied and creative. Really enjoyed the seafood burger. The popcorn chicken nibbles are a must! Great experience. Thank you to all the staff for making my husbands birthday special

I stopped for brunch and was extremely disappointed 😔 the dish was served cold on a cold plate initially. Then when I complained they took it away and came back with hidden burnt toast under my.poached eggs and avocado and kale. The plate was still cold. I have previously enjoyed lunch and brunch here on various occasions, so I'm.not quite sure what went wrong here! I called in to inform the operations manager as the restaurant manager was no at all concerned. He said he'd investigate and never got back to me. Disappointing ... I never returned the second plate as I was hungry and had no time to wait for the to try and correct it only to fail again. The be toast was burnt black and hard! I should have just opted for Leon or PRET!

Could be 4 stars as the menu wasn't particularly imaginative and I had to ask for water 3 times. BUT on the flip side the staff were really nice and the food was tasty but maybe not great value for the price.

Food took over an hour to arrive. Scallops were off - as in inedible. We were not asked if we’d like to refresh drinks. No apology or explanation for the delay, no nibbles offered. Table water luke warm. Music way too loud. Clearly operating on a skeleton staff so may have caught them in an off day. They did take 3 main courses off the bill without being asked. But would have rather paid the full price for a nice meal out.

Waited over one hour for our food.. They forgot our mains and didn't even apologies. Place also looks filthy and ready for a change of management. Avoid.

Been trying to contact for a few days, no answer on the phone and no response to an email, so I can’t book to go here.

Where do I start? 30 minutes after being seated we were then asked if we wanted anything to drink. After another 15 minutes, our orders were taken. At 1 hour and 5 minutes are starters came out with our drinks. (These were fine - very tasty). Then it goes extremely downhill. My wife ordered a seafood burger for £18 and I ordered a chicken roast. At this point, 1 hour and 35 minutes have passed, our mains come out and I had a very generous meal whereas my wife's was the complete opposite. A prawn head for decoration with no prawn actually inside and a crab claw without any flesh in. This was sent back and we ordered a steak instead. My chicken however, was still alive. I ate half before the red overpowered every other colour. Truly, truly awful experience for my wife's birthday. We will not be coming back. And I can only hope I'm not ill this evening. Shambolic service and an awful dining experience. Avoid at all costs.

I called last week to book a table for 7 as you can’t book for 7 on line left a massage 2 days passed no response called again answer phone so called hotel receptionist told her what happened she was very apologetic to my details and said she would tell the manager still no call

Popped in for brunch and chose a cheese burger and my wife had scallops food was delicious and our waiter Elias was very polite helpful and courteous. Will definitely go back maybe for dinner next time.

We live locally and have been a couple of times for food. Today was awful- the worst fish and chips I have ever had, gloopy, soggy, orange ‘batter’. 2 mains, tap water and 2 glasses of wine came to £80….

The garden is pretty but today I had the worst fish and chips I’ve ever had. I don’t think anyone would call the orange soggy dough on the outside batter…. Wasn't asked how the food was at all, and waitress didn’t ask even though all the batter was clumped on half of the plate. Probably nice for drinks, I’d avoid for food.

Nice food and service, however, watch out for a sneaky charge. We were asked if we wanted a jug of water with our meal which one assumes is a bottle or jug of tap water unless specifically mentioned that it’s a bottle of still or...

11 of us attended a birthday dinner on Saturday 5 March 2022. We were asked by the restaurant to submit our pre-order a few days in advance of dining. What a disaster. The service was utterly appalling. Waiting staff were lack lustre and not fully trained. Courses arrived at different times resulting in our guests eating at different intervals. Also resulted in extended gap between various courses. Some of our guests food was cold and had to be returned. Lovely environment however none of our guests will ever return. Poor service took the shine off the evening. Manager did take the service change off the bill. Be warned.

I think this was one of the best places I have eaten. Had a family celebration meal. Staff were very attentive but not 'in your face'. The menu was varied with good choice and the food was delivered quickly and was really tasty. The restaurant was well decorated.

I had lunch at The Gate today with my 3 and 6 year old daughters and our waiter Hermando was amazing. Incredibly helpful especially as I was solo with my 2 kids. Everyone in fact was very accommodating and helpful. The food was great but the service is what would bring me back again.

😭😭 I had breakfast here after staying in the hotel. Oh god... It was wonderful! WONDERFUL! Easily the most lovely dining experience of my life (and I've had a few). 😭 Oh, it was just so lovely. The cleanliness, the architecture, the interior design, the staff, the food, the coffee, the tableware... It was even really quiet that morning - certainly no loud, brash types - and we had lots of time before we needed to be on our way. I can say, without doubt, it was the least stressed hour of my entire life. If a breakfast experience can have that effect then it's safe to say they've got it nailed.

I visited my son who lives in Richmond for a few days and I was looking at the reviews so that’s why we visited amazing food amazing service and despite the fact that the restaurant was full and he staff took really good care of us !

We went to this restaurant because of the great reviews and so pleased we did ! It was a busy Sunday but the service , food , drinks and atmosphere were all excellent. Loved the decor and the buzz of the place . Also great value ! Will definitely return again soon .

We stayed this weekend at the hotel and from start to finish our stay was fantastic The reception staff were friendly and very accommodating (travelling with a 17 month old baby it can be challenging) but all the staff in the hotel and restaurant were really helpful and helped made our stay enjoyable We enjoyed cocktails in the Gate with fantastic options to choose from We enjoyed a very tasty and enjoyable Sunday lunch which also offered a great menu for our toddler too ! I can’t praise this hotel and restaurant enough - when travelling with a toddler it can be quite stressful but we were put at ease immediately so thank you to all the staff at both the hotel and gate restaurant- we can wait to return

Best Sunday roast in the area, love this place!

Recently moved in the area and wanted to check out the place as a cocktail lover, I was entertained all night long by Salvatore and his drinks knowledge especially about Negroni, I absolutely loved the ambiance and all the drinks were the best I ever had, absolutely recommended!!

As always, really nice time at the Gate. Served by Salvatore, who makes the evening even more special ! Thank you

Used the Hotel to work for the day catching up on admin.Perfect surroundings to get work done.As a Vegan I had the Superfood Salad which was excellent and will try the Vegan Shepherds Pie next time.Coffee was great and the evening drink was the perfect way to end the day.A great visit.

We had a work away day at the hotel and ate breakfast and lunch at the gate. The food was lovely (had the tagliatelle, delicious!) and the service was friendly and efficient. Nothing was too much trouble. A great place to come if you are in Richmond or just looking for a stylish and relaxed place to eat or drink in London. Definitely will come back

Amazing cocktails, place with a buzz food good

I came with a few friends for some drinks on a Saturday night. There was a great atmosphere and the service from Salvatore in particular was great. One of the guys has a meal which he enjoyed. Highly recommend this place to anyone and well worth venturing out a little further for.

Best negronis in town. Specifically recommend the salvatores negroni made by its author (Salvatore) - breathtaking. Also Harry, awesome service ! Thank you both.
