The Gate Hotel in Bolsover

This was the first time I had visited and I was very impressed. It was Halloween week and the decorations were brilliant. The staff were very friendly and the owner was hilarious, always cracking jokes. The menu was good and the food came out piping hot. I would definitely recommend this place, I have already booked my next visit.

Called in for a special lunch what a joke never again staff totally incompetent ordered our meal sat for a hour nearly only to be told bar person had forgotten our order . He had already given us the wrong drink order but we let that go ,the member of staff that explained to us about our meal was not that interested so we asked for our money back deffo not sitting another hour for lunch ,in this day and age public houses should welcome customers that spend nearly £50 at lunchtime good job we were not a large party . Will give this place in future .

Good value for money with a variety of options for the Sunday roast, as there should be. Clean plates all round and we would recommend this place to others

It is very difficult to get everything right when offering a carvery but this was as good as it gets. There were three people in our group and not one morsel was left on anyone's plate. The staff were friendly with a sense of humour. The conservatory is a lovely, comfortable environment. The food was delicious with plenty of choice. Very good value too. Meats chosen between us were pork, gammon and turkey.

Love the carvery and go most Sundays, friendly staff and pleasant atmosphere, beats cooking myself and is very good value.

The owner that is. He’s a bit of a hunk. Nice to see an older man taking care of himself. And what a sense of humour! I had the chicken mind.

Plates were cold to start with and not very clean. Meat dry, poor selection of vegetables, would have been more appetising if swede had been mashed. Vegetables cold. We went on recommendation despite the 0 hygiene rating, which is appropriate. Needs a good clean. Staff friendly but no check back on food. Staff could be smarter. Will definitely not be going back very poor choice of veg, roast potatoes hard and burnt.

What a magical Winter Wonderland setting to have a Chriztmas meal.Enjoyed a lovely Vegan nutroast and vegetables followed by vegan cheesecake The food, staff and pub are excellent. Had a fantastic evening, highly recommend.

Just had a lovely meal..I had fish and chips and my hubby had home made Thai fish cakes with sweet potato fries..it was lovely and so were the girls who served us..sociable and professional all rolled into one..we dined in the conservatory which was a comfortable area with social distancing in place.

6 meals ordered Minted Lamb wrap, Liver and Onions, "homemade" cheese and onion fritters, Stack Burger, Sweet & Sour Chicken with rice, Chicken wrap. 10 minutes after ordering we were told they had no rice so were offered chips as a replacement. When the meals came the stack burger had 2 burgers, bacon but only 1 cheese no sauce or salad on it.. Also the burgers were wafer thin and well over cooked. The minted Lamb Wrap was cold tasty but very small. Sweet & Sour was clearly out of a jar and did not have much chicken in it at all. Cheese & Onion Fritters were not very warm. The Liver and Onions looked more like a dog food stew. Chicken wrap was OK. All served on cold plates. We all ate our food apart from the Liver and Onions at the the end of the meal when our plates were cleared we told the waitress it was not good and she said she would let the kitchen know and that was all we heard. Oh yeah and they ran out of Lager too.

Good carvery, very good value for money. Lots to choose from on menu from snack to filling meals. Beautiful orangery and Christmas decorations are amazing! Landlord makes everyone feels welcome.

My husband & I called in for lunch on Tuesday. Husbands carvery was fine. Mine supposedly beef stew was nothing of the sort. Chunks of left over beef so obviously carved from a already cooked joint which had never seen the inside of a stew pan. Portions of carrots, other veg including potatoes with non onion gravy placed on top. However giving their other menu the benefit of doubt we booked the same table for a family of 5 in The Orangery for 1-30pm on Sunday 1st. Of March. When we arrived the table was occupied by others who were just placing their order. We pointed out to the waitress that we had booked this table and was told very abruptly to go to the bar & tell the manager. We did & was told we had now been placed on another table for 5. Guess what, this too was occupied by others. Having trailed our family backwards & forwards thro’ bar & Orangery twice & met again with complete indifference to our plight. We walked out determined never to go there again as table bookings done in person appear to be totally disregarded. We then proceeded to the Plug & Feathers at Glapwell where we enjoyed a lovely meal, served by attentive pleasant staff & May I add without a reservation. £82 bar bill. Your loss Gate Hotel. You may be busy but your customer service on this occasion was to be deplored.

Called in on speck and was presently surprised! The carvery was one of the best we have had, good choice of meat, veg and salad.A good choice on menu, something for everyone! Comfy seating area, conservatory, friendly staff, also have themed evenings!

Went last night with a party of six the food was great with good size portions and the young guy who served us was very pleasant and accomodating with some of the odd things some of us asked for . The chips were especially good . We would have given it five stars if not for some of the terrible "singing" from the karaoke in the bar area.

Have now a number of meals here and two birthday meals. Sunday roast is lovely worth a visit everything fresh and every month end they have lamb on the menu. The staff make you feel at home perfect little gem.

Been going to the Gate on a regular basis for the last 3 years. Alway's have the carvery and have never been disappointed. Very filling It's set's me up for the rest of the day. Choice of meat's from Beef Turkey & Gammon also I believe Pork once a month on Sunday's.Prices are very good at £5 95 Tuesday to Saturday and £7 95 on a Sunday. I find on a Sunday best time to go at 3 pm as from 12 till then it get's packed and the car park is full also. Well worth a try

Had a wonderful Christmas carvery here today for which I will give 10/10! I really couldn't fault it at all. I highly recommend the food here. It was, however, badly let down by the drinks choice at the bar. No real ales at all and the choice was basically nothing more than mass produced fizzy crap, ie. Fosters, Strongbow, John Smiths. Such a shame as this, to me, lets the pub down badly. Amazing Christmas decorations! Very friendly staff.

Great quality, no frills pub fayre offering brilliant value. Book a table in the orangery for the best ambiance.

We regularly visit here on our pub rides at Derbyshire Pony Trekking. The staff are great and can never do enough for us. Food is lovely and we are always greeted with smiling faces. Will recommend every time!

Never fails to disappoint, consistently good food and service. This lady knows how to cook but stays in the background... and Phil has the customer service covered. Staff are happy, making a good atmosphere.Lovely hard working crew, highly recommend the carvery but also has a full menu and the curry is divine

We discovered this gem of a pub recently, and have been 3 times now. The carvery is excellent. The cost for OAP carvery is £4.10. You get lots of meat and a good choice, and sausages too !The veg is very tasty and 3 sorts of potatoes. The staff are very friendly and the pub itself is lovely with a conservatory, but not hot in there , no glass roof. There is a country park opposite ,well worth a visit, nice walks where Langwith Colliery once stood. We won't go anywhere else for carvery now ! They also have a full menu as well.

A girls date out, looked after really well by a young man named Lewis. Food as usual delicious and value for money. The decor is fabulous as are the owners. Always a dead cert for a meal of any kind, regular or special.

Called in Sunday for the carvery. We managed to get a table in the orangery which I preferred to sitting in the pub itself. Vegetarians accommodated for, good selection of fresh vegetables on the carvery serve yourself. Mash, roast and boiled potatoes. Yorkshire puds were a bit overdone but ok. £7.95 I think very good value. Staff pleasant and accomodating also

We regularly visit this place as a family m and although it’s nothing special the value for money you normally get is good however today we went with a group of 14 today and nobody was happy with their meal.

We regularly visit this place especially when we visit family and can say we have not had a bad meal there. Parking can be a nightmare and we would recommend booking but in general everything else is fine.... food is fresh, service is efficient and you don’t feel rushed to finish your food and leave which most carverys tend to do.

Weve been in twice since we moved to the area and sadly had to complain on both occasions. Without a satisfactory result. We now travel just up the road to the Competitors

We have visited this establishment on more than one occasion and the food gets worse each time...we vowed to never visit again but gave it the benefit of doubt.

Plenty of people here moaning about such trivial things. It’s a lovely place, with lovely staff and nice food. I’ll always recommend!

From the second you enter this place you feel at home, a wonderful family run pub with a carvery that hits every note. The customer service is just fantastic the owner as an infectious smile, you just don't want to leave this place, if your eating out on a Sunday make sure you book. We camped out in the refurbished orangery it was glorious, my partner thought we had come to Michelin starred restaurant. There is a great range of beers and wines on sale. get your self down to the gate you won't regret it. The pub is closed on Mondays.

The Staff were very welcoming and we were in the Conservatory which was very pleasant. We all had the Carvery and this was also excelent. Will certainly go againl.

What a fabulous place ‘ it rivals Toby any day with its 4 meats! Lots of crackling, fresh veg , mash ‘ to the gorgeous gravy ! I loved every mouthful ! , even love the salad bar idea! The staff were so so polite ! I can’t rave about this place enough ! The orangery was lovely and bright , really clean :-)10/10 ! Well done

We visited here as a table of 7, the majority of us ordered steak and mine and my partners were both very over cooked. One was a t-bone at £19.95 so would of liked it cooked to preference but didn’t complain as the waiter was overly chatty to a point where we couldn’t talk amongst ourselves as he was stood there including himself in our conversation. Shorts also not a professional look. The biggest issue was when we came to pay, we wanted to split the bill and was told this was not possible as it makes it too hard for them to cash up later!!!! Now I am a hotel, bar & restaurant manager and would absolutely love for the manager here to respond to me by telling why they obviously can’t add up or cash a till up?? Why are you a manager/owner if you are going to tell people they can’t pay and refuse my card??? Good job somebody else paid my share because I wouldn’t of paid anything otherwise. Maybe you should put signage up saying you cannot split bills between cash and card which is utterly ridiculous to save you from (no) extra work if you knew your job. Will never return as not sure if we could pay or not. I advise people who do decide to visit to split there bill with cash and card and when they refuse you won’t have to pay - they are refusing you offer of payment. Free meals all round

Went in to hotel two rude staff that ignored us for 5 minutes until eventually we decided to ask if there was carvery to which the answer was no only menu. Then ignored to which there was seven of us which left.

First visit....both had carvery it would of been nice but for the fact it was just warm....our plates were cleared and was asked "was everything alright?" I said no cause it was just warm.....reply was " well we are finishing". Sorry but if i pay the same price as the first people at the carvery i expect my food to be as hot.

Thought we would givethis pub a try as we have heard good reviews about it and we were not disappointed my lamb shank was very tasty could recommend it . Staff very friendly and helpful Well done we shall be calling again 👍

The best carvery in the area. Always plenty of choice definitely the place to go. Also pub meals are lovely too. You won't leave hungry

My Daughter and Son in law took me here for lunch on New Years day what a great place food was excellent, little bit of a delay with the veg on the carvery but this did not spoil the meal.Very polite and friendly staff all in all a very enjoyable lunch well done the Gate Hotel will definitely be back

We were lucky enough to find the last available space in the relatively small car park for such a busy Sunday lunchtime. This was our first visit to The Gate to meet with friends. Our first impressions were good as we noticed a well laid out Orangery. However, we were not fortunate enough to sit in there and ended up having a table where customers were queuing for the carvery. We were very happy with the food even though we all were served with different portions of beef even though we had paid the same price. On the downside as soon as we joined our friends a staff member rushed to check if we had booked and in what name even though we sat with our group. We paid for our meals at the bar and whilst we might have been flattered that we looked so young no one pointed out that the rate is cheaper for OAPs. We could have saved £1.50 per had. Anyhow we didn’t wish to embarrass ourselves so let it be. Whatever you do don’t order wine. Three of us asked for wine and none of us enjoyed it in fact we each said it was the worst wine we had ever tasted even though three of us had red and one white it was the same opinion. Yes we shall return if we can sit in the orangery and not have wine.

We arranged to meet with an old friend and a family member at this venue purely for ease as it is reasonably central to where we wanted to be. Arriving a little earlier than the actual opening time we were returning to sit the car to wait when we were ushered inside by the landlord. Despite not quite being ready the staff soon opened up enough to serve us and the landlord Phil joined us with his coffee to keep us entertained whilst we waited for our guests to arrive.

Just returned from our first visit to The Gate Hotel. We arrived slightly before opening time on Friday evening. Having time to look around the pub we explored all of the three large rooms available. We chose the conservatory which had been decorated to a very eclectic style. The fixture and fittings were of a high quality and it is obvious to see whoever chose these had an eye for detail. We were approached by a young man by the name of Matthew who was polite and courteous without being over obtrusive, he is a credit to the Gate Hotel owner and nothing was too much trouble for him. I had a rack of ribs while my partner had butterfly chicken with peppercorn sauce. Both these meals were cooked to perfection and as we were first to dine were on the table very efficiently. The meals were of a generous portion size and were very good value for money.

This is my local, which serves very good and varied menu at a very reasonable prices,mine host is always welcoming and supplies a good srvice

Just passing by on my way home. Sat on a lovely old fashioned leather suit listening to 'ain't she sweet' on the piped music. Group of fellas playing dominoes in the corner of the room. Good feel overall.

Called in the gate hotel on Tuesday afternoon and had the carvery what value for money I had the and the wife had the turkey could not fault the meal at all the choice is great the only problem was my knife would not have cut butter I think a new set of cutelery would not go a miss I will definitely go again though

We called here on a Friday afternoon what a well decorated pub very nice passed it many times,we had carvery the beef was very lean n there was plenty of it,a fab meal in very nice surroundings will recommend to friends n family

Best carvery for miles around. Been a regular customer on a Sunday lunchtime for around 3 years and can't fault the food. It's always very flavorsome and well presented.

A Party of around 18 or 20 of us from our local community centre like to go to The Gate for a Carvery lunch every two months or so. The owner (Philip) and his family always make you feel very welcome and Philip is very 'hands-on' making sure you have everything you need.

Quite a few of us went for Sunday lunch here to finish off a fabulous wedding weekend. The room which we were allocated was in a new extension. Set out lovely. Plenty of doors and windows to open to let some welcome fresh air in on a warm day. The carvery was really good. Quick and pleasant service. Plenty of choice. Food all cooked nicely.

Wow it's still as good but need to update on the premises they have now completed the conservatory and it looks fab, the work is almost completed on the out side and car park is a job well done. The greeting by the owner was great as if we were long lost family, the staff were still as friendly and helpful, and the food was as good as ever. They have now added a salad bar so a lighter option for those not wanting the carvery. Don't drive past drop in and have a treat.

the food is very good. I think the Gate is a victim of its own success. It was very busy and it was a good job we booked. I do not think they know when to say no to people who want to eat. The bar area was very very busy not a pleasant area to sit and eat.I recommend the orangery to anyone who is thinking of booking. We went to queue for our carvery, when we got back to our table we had been moved and not been told. Even though we had booked. At 1:30 they had run out of Lamb.

I try and take my mum and dad to the gate at least once a month.The food is always good and value for money. The staff are always friendly and nothing is to much trouble.Try it you won't be disappointed.

WOW absolutely beautiful. I am a vegetarian and I was well satisfied with the meal as were the rest of my family. The atmosphere was excellent we were all made to feel welcome staff and owners, they kept checking everything was ok and we had everything we needed. Will go again.

The Gate Hotel has under gone major changes over the last year but this has not had any effect on the standard of food or the service. A new large extension of a conservatory has been added with work almost finished it looks stunning and is very pleasant to sit in. The decor is exceptionally tastefully done. Furnishings are homely and comfortable to sit and eat your meal. Wines are good and not expensive as are the other drinks. Which brings me onto the food just like being at home best cooked food vegetables crisp to eat not cooked to a pulp, a choice of potatoes mash, new and roast all the other veg were cooked to perfection, with plain and onion gravy and all types of accompaniments. You're shire puddings small and crisp even the stuffing is good better choice of roast joints the earlier you eat which is only to be expected however the roasts are cooked perfectly. Add to all this the staff then you have a winning combination they are hard working and come service with a smile nothing to much trouble. A warm welcome always awaits you when you dine at the Gate. May be advisable to book during busy times. The gate is very family friendly.

The carvery was very tasty.Fresh vegetables lots of choice and 4 different meats. Friendly welcoming staff can't wait to visit again. Try it you won't regret it.

My first visit today, a superb quality carvery, excellent value for money, great atmosphere. The whole place was very busy but service was still friendly, courteous and prompt.
