This was the most magical wedding I have ever been to. Both parties The Garden Station/Suzie and Daniel put a lot of effort into making it a wonderful day. The food was excellent, well organised, easy to change or add things to the venue with both parties working in tune to each other. The atmosphere was amazing, brilliant guests making the couples special day a one to remember. The staff at The Garden Station was well organised and the garden was well cared for. It is a unique spot to hold a wedding.

If you want your wedding experience to feel totally un-special, have no idea of how much your wedding will cost, receive stinking communication and service, and not be kept informed of how the planning is going, then YES this is the place for your special wedding day! We had this venue booked for our wedding, but after months and months of truly atrocious communication and service (if you can call it that) and months of us having to chase up contact to try and plan our wedding, we felt forced to cancel our wedding with only four months to go. Up to this point we had little communication, no proof of our wedding actually being planned and a real feeling that no-one actually cared. We did not feel special. We got in touch with the owner in September 2016, after initial emails went for a viewing in October and paid our deposit in mid-November. We did not receive any confirmation of payment until 4 days later, only after emailing/texting various times to chase! Little did we know this would be a common thread of our experience. By the end of January 2017 we still had heard nothing from The Garden Station. Bear in mind our wedding was planned for September (only 8 months away) and we had not been asked to confirm any of our plans for our wedding as yet. We got in touch and received an email back, with a very basic estimate costs. From this we had a few things to clarify so we arranged to meet in February (7 months to go). The meeting (we thought) had gone well. We were told we would receive an updated estimate in a couple of days. 1 week later - no reply, no estimate! We sent an email to chase. A further 10 days later, still no reply, no estimate, no nothing! We sent another email to chase. This time we received a response within 4 minutes apologising and saying we would receive it that night. We received NOTHING! We decided to ease off for a few weeks, be patient and give some space. Perhaps we were being too needy in expecting effective communication? However by mid-April (5 months till the wedding date) we were starting to get worried. We had received no information to say anything was being organised, nor had we received an updated quote. We chased up again, explaining we needed to work out how many people we could afford to attend and get invites out to guests in good time, time was ticking. 10 DAYS LATER - Still no response, no quote, no nothing! We emailed her advising she was making us anxious, asking if there was any problem with the wedding. We said we would not be upset, but we needed to know if it could not go ahead as we would need to find a quick replacement venue. We received an email 1 hour later advising everything was fine and we would receive an estimate tomorrow. You guessed it - we received NOTHING! By May (4 months till the wedding) we were feeling extremely anxious and getting a bit fed up. We were disappointed with the service/information received and in general felt unappreciated. Just what you want to feel during your wedding planning? My fiancee called the owner to voice our concerns and was told she couldn't talk but would get back to us that day. SHE DID NOT. My fiancee called back the next day 3 times, but to no avail. Finally she got back to us to with apologies and said she would send an updated quote for us. We received this, however it was almost the exact same quote we had received in January, nothing had been updated from our visit in February. We felt we had not been listened to and nothing had been done since our visit. We emailed back to state she had not added anything from our meeting in February. She had took notes at the meeting so we gave her the opportunity to re-check her notes or we could send a list of the items we wanted, so she could send an updated quote. We received NO RESPONSE and NO ESTIMATE. 2 days later we felt we were being ignored, we again emailed and received a response saying she had sent the wrong one and would get it to us tomorrow. ONE WEEK LATER - yep, we hadn't received anything. Getting the theme here? By now, we had had enough. We emailed with regret to advise that because of the way we had been treated, we no longer trusted her to host our wedding. We advised we wanted to cancel because of the poor communication (to be kind to her) and that we were very unhappy with the service we had received. We said the way our wedding had been handled was very unprofessional and asked for a full refund of our deposit. Surprisingly, no response! We called and spoke to her at the end of May to explain our concerns. We were advised we would only receive a refund if she could re-book the date. We have no idea if anyone did re-book the date, but we never received a refund. Luckily, with 4 months to go we found another brilliant and extremely professional venue and we had an amazing wedding day! So pleased we didn't give any more money or time to The Garden Station and it's unprofessional owners. If you are hoping to have your wedding here, I would look at how special you want your wedding to feel. Do you want to have someone planning your wedding who listens to you, who you can contact, who shows interest in your plans, who cares that you have a brilliant day? If so, I would look elsewhere. This is not just me, look at the other reviews on The Garden Station (and on it's other TripAdvisor page), others mention poor communication and organisation too. I wish we had checked all of the reviews on this website before planning our wedding. We are writing this in the hope you have a better experience during your wedding preparations than we did.

This was a lovely little find. Set on the old Langley station the little coffee shop is situated in the old station buildings and the garden is set out on the old track bed and the platforms on both sides of the old track. It had a lovely cosy feel especially as the raining. We enjoyed a tasty parsnip soup and sandwiches with a drink. We then went for a walk around the nearby mill pond and along the old track. With the rain coming down we went back to the station and finished off the day by having a lovely Oreo chocolate cake and a nice cup of tea. Our daughter is lactose intolerant and she enjoyed some lovely meringues and raspberries. Perfect!!

Dropped of at Garden Station on our way to Cumbria. The Station continues to improve and the garden is looking really good at this time. There was a doggy event going on with plenty of four legged friends about with dozens of water bowls spread out across the site. Inside we ordered coffee and as they looked so good cheese scones, the staff were quick and efficient with the drinks arriving followed a few minutes later by the scones warmed and with loads of butter in a bowl and did not disappoint. The old station building is wearing well and is done out in a shabby chic style. Sadly the station has a limited opening as there are so many events booked in, should you wish to visit it would be best to check by calling ahead.

I visited the cafe today with my family for what we believed would be a well deserved treat. I was incredibly disappointed with the entire experience. At £16 per head for afternoon tea (£2 less than the award winning Langley Castle) I couldn't help feeling as though I'd been swindled on my way out. The whole experience was anything but special... The service was slow and clumsy. We were served a poor variety of sandwiches (3 of the 4 including cheese. No meat option). The China was dusty and dirty. No napkins were available (even upon request!). Things didn't improve when the selection of cakes were brought out; they were generally a selection of cold tray cakes (rocky road etc) and the actually cakes were very similar, boring and dry. We also failed to benefit from the "bottomless" tea and coffee, due to poor service and lack of staffing. To add insult to injury there was a hair in one of the sandwiches. All in all this was a disappointing and overrated dining experience. The only redeeming features were nice home made scones (however they were on the small side) and a charming garden. This cafe does have potential and is ideal for a a quick fix for a sandwich, whilst out walking, but it is unrealistic to believe that their offer of afternoon tea can be priced as £16pp, £8 would have felt more appropriate for what was received. Very disappointed!

We had heard so much about this place and decided to have a run out. Parking was extremely problematical ( in essence they don't have a car park) but when we did eventually squeeze on the side of the road we were able to go for a nice walk around the gardens and along the old railway line. We then went in to the very characterful old station to order two teas and a cheese scone. After 15 minutes of waiting we asked when we could expect out tea. There were only two other customers who likewise had no food or drinks. Eventually tea arrived and I reminded the young waitress that we had also ordered a scone. "Yes I know she replied" More customers arrived to sit in the garden and she began serving them tea. Still no scone. When we had finished our tea I went to pay for them and pointed out that we never received our scone. "That's it there" she said and pointed to a scone on a plate sitting in the back of the kitchen! There just seemed to be total lack of staff training or supervision on these premises. Have never been back despite regularly visiting the area.

My husband and I are travelling around the Durham / Northumberland area for a few days on a break away. We had been walking parts of Hadrians Wall on a windy day. Driving around in the afternoon we were in need of a good cup of tea and chanced upon a sign for The Garden Station. We parked up on the roadside and walked through a little yard area.As we turned a corner we came to the most amazing sight , a wonderful old station waiting room and ticket office , with the old rail lines transformed into the most gorgeous garden . , so many flowers and plants and unique ornamental features.Inside the building has been decorated to a high standard of shabby chic , pinks and greens and polka dots , with a lovely wooden floor. The staff were attentive and we opted for a cream tea, the biggest freshest scones , gorgeous strawberry jam and lashings of thick double cream , the teapot provided us with at least two cuppas each. We were told that the owners mum did the gardening and what a credit to her it is ! Afterwards we took a stroll through the garden along the old lines under two bridges marvelling at the plants and shrubs that had been planted .If you get a chance , do look this place up , it really is a true hidden gem !

Northumberland has its share of disused former railway stations. Some have been allowed to go into marked decline and all too soon fade from the both the scene and the memory. Occasionally, the Victorian station platforms and assocaited buildings are put to better use, as is the case with the Garden Station cafe at Langley. At one time, the station was part of a healthy passenger route and the carriage of some local freight, before declining and being closed altogether in the fifties. The current cafe owners spotted a niche in the market and have restored the platform and its related buildings into something very enjoyable and attractive to behold. Here you can enjoy fresh, home-cooked, locally sourced food, made with fair trade ingredients, all in a lovely setting. A group of us booked a very reasonably priced light lunch, through Groupon, in mid March and the experience was very good. The soup , sandwiches and cake were delicious, with a very good choice and all washed down with bottomless coffee or tea. The interior is quite basic as befits the original station, but the overall ambience created by former railway memorabelia and the work of local artists is memorable. Service is prompt and cheerful. Booking is advisable as this place is popular and space and seating are at a premium. Nevertheless, the cafe is really quite a little gem well signposted and set in one of the most strikingly beautiful locations in west Northumberland. It is best to be no rush, as after or before eating, you can stroll into the local woodland and follow the path created by the former railway line. The owners have made the immediate setting even more attractive with potted plants and a wide rage of planted shrubs and the like. Parking is adequate and a warm welcome is guaranteed.

This is an intriguing place, in a shabby-nearly-chic sort of way. It's off the beaten track but in a good area for walking around some fascinating Victorian era industrial ruins with magnificent, lonely views. The Garden Station retains the platforms and buildings of the old lead railway and the outside areas must be great for kids in good weather. The food and service are absolutely fine - not spectacular although the quesadillas received critical acclaim from my fellow diners. It's a soup and sandwich sort of place. The decor is idiosyncratic and has soul. Somebody cares about this place and their personality is on the walls, under the benches and strewn about the garden.

We have recently returned from a lunch at the Garden Station courtesy of a Groupon voucher, and I,m pleased to say that this is definitely a place we will be returning to. The deal was, soup, sandwich and a cake with tea or coffee. There was four of us and our granddaughter who was made very welcome - toys supplied by the Garden Station. The soup and sandwiches are all freshly made for you as soon as you order, so please don,t go here and expect fast food, everything is worth that little extra wait. Anyway sit back and enjoy the ambiance of your surrounding, the café/restaurant is on the old railway line - I think from Alston to Hexham - and it is the old station, probably the ticket office and waiting rooms. But back to the food, I,ve said that the meal was not one of the best meals I,ve had in a restaurant but it is definitely one of the best meals I,ve had in a café/restaurant. The Garden Station can be a bit awkward to find but it is definitely well worth the find, excellent food, great atmosphere, and the fact that they are dog and child friendly - only if there well behaved, remember there are other people wanting to enjoy there food as well. If you fancy somewhere where you can go to relax and enjoy great food and have an enjoyable walk afterwards then this is the place for you. We would definitely recommend the Garden Station and we WILL return!!

What a treat, the place is a bit quirky, an old railway station that reminded me of tea in the village hall with old fashioned table and chairs, lots of ceramic tea cups and all in lovely pastel colours. The location is delightful and well worth a drive around and a bit of walking and although the garden was full of snow you wanted to take a walk and explore. The food was amazing, beautiful fresh sandwiches and delightful cakes, so good we bought extra's to take away, hot tea and coffee and absolutely delicious soup. Served with a smile which is all you can ask. We had a baby with us and the tiny toilet had nappies and nappy bags which was a lovely touch. It was a lovely find and a treat for a sandwich on a winters day. This often happens to us at smaller cafés and restaurants as we are quite a large party, so no big deal. The sandwiches were good and the cake excellent, the coffee served in a french press, rather than using an Italian Coffee machine. Speciality loose leaf teas are available. An old fashioned collection of pepper pots and crockery were of particular interest to my youngest girl (8). We visitors the station as we had a groupon voucher for cake coffee and sandwich, on arrival (11am) we were the first there and were told to take a seat by a lady who was busy with wedding enquiries and she shouted for service, no one came to take our order, another couple came in and sat down and after another 5 mins a girl came from the back and served the other couple before us which I wasn't amused with but we had already prepaid for the voucher so it was ok, the girl wrote sandwiches on the blackbird spelt 'sandwitches' not too impressive, our food came and it was all nice, the sandwiches and tea, tasty, however the lady who was taking those wedding enquiries then went over to another couple who came in with a dog and started to pet it and stroke it then went into the kitchen and behind the counter and didn't once wash her hands which was not a nice thought so apart from the food the visit was terrible, also you might need some wellies to walk to it as there's a very muddy track for parking.

Arrived to the smell of a transport cafe, steamed up windows and cold room. Service was slow throughout - two young girls and the air is almost 'couldn't care less' although pleasant. The phone kept ringing but was not answered once while we were there. Coffee was so weak it was tasteless. Watched as hot water from boiler was added to large bowl of soup! Brown bread was more like half and half bread. Soup was puréed sandwiches were ok. Home made cake nice but tea arrived with no tea bags in teapot! This could be a lot better than it is - tables are sloppily covered in pretty oilcloth and didn't see one table wiped after people left. The whole place looks as if it's had a quick one day makeover on a very tight budget. Won't be going back!

Booked an afternoon tea for my family (mam, dad, husband and two daughters + the dog) using a Groupon offer. What excellent value for money. The station is only small but very cosy and the dog was allowed in! We went for a walk along the old track line beforehand, we found some rope swings which were fun. One point to make, the Groupon voucher states the wrong postcode, so do find the correct one before travelling.

Went for lunch with my mum and it was simply fab. The location, the look both inside and outside. It's lovely to see this little part of history has been preserved in such a charming way. Food was super yummy soup, sandwich and cake all of which is homemade. Can't recommend this place enough and looking forward to going back to explore the gardens.

We visited The Garden Station on a Groupon deal. Very good value! The cafe is small with limited seating - it got full very quickly when we where there. Quirky decor - vintage tea cups and plates. Sandwiches were delicious - hand carved ham and creamy egg mayo. I wasn't a big fan of the soup - Armenian. It was really just unpeeled tatties! Cake was delicious. Lovely little walk around the gardens afterwards. We'll definitely cone back in the summer!

This was my third visit to The Garden Station, and my second on a Groupon (or Living Social) deal. The place is beautiful in the spring, summer and autumn (anytime, really - as long as it's not hammering down!). The garden and outdoor furniture and all the planting make this a very special, and quite "secretive" place and it makes a great base for walks in the area. The atmosphere is so evocative of times past, when the building used to be the little Langley Station. The cafe is always interesting with it's changing art and crafts exhibitions, what looks like a hand-made scrap book of the history of the area, and lovely, charming little curios to buy, and the food is super-fresh and very tasty. Today's soup (vegetable) was not really to my taste but last time I visited, the tomato and marscapone soup was fab. Four of us went today and had a variety of smashing well-filled sandwiches and heavenly lemon drizzle cake, with a big pot of tea to accompany it.The owner overheard my friends and me talking about our planned walk back to Haydon Bridge (only about 3 or 4 miles), and was so concerned about the terrible weather that she offered her husband as chauffeur. How nice is that! I'm sure it wouldn't happen in a bigger place. We gladly accepted the lift, and will naturally be returning to The Garden Station when the weather gets better.

It took a bit of finding, but then it does pay to enter the correct post code onto the sat nav. Anyway what a gem of a place, it was like going back into time,This lovely old railway station has been lovingly restored and its the perfect setting for afternoon tea. The staff were very good and we were not rushed into making our minds up, The food was lovely and as for the home made cake, its was very nice.Once we had ordered, the service was quick. We will go back in the summertime so that we can explore the area as we was told there are some pretty walks nearby.

We had a groupon voucher and it was booked for today, we live in Northumberland but we got lost lol trying to find the garden station.Anyway we eventually found it and said we was sorry for the delay, the girl served us was very nice and pleasant and said that was fine. The service was very quick, the surroundings inside and outside lovely as this was a working station and closed in 1950. My husband was brought up in a railway station house down south and he just loved it.The soup was lovely and homemade, the sandwiches yummy. The cakes were lovely and I couldn't eat mine so the girl put mine in a bag which was nice of her to do as we didn't ask her.We will return in the summer as we heard about a lovely walk around there and have another coffee and sandwich :).

We decided to try it out and have morning tea here. We ordered 2 scones and 2 cups of coffee. when the waitress bought out our scones she only had one with her so we mentioned that we actually ordered 2. She came back a couple minutes later with just an extra scone on a plate - no jam & cream, so we had to share the little jam and cream that we received with the first scone between the 2. They weren't heated and they were absolutley tiny. To be honest it was store bought scones - they weren't freshly baked or made there amd were hard. If they were that small - why not serve 2 for the price we paid! The coffee was awful - I have had better coffee at MacDonalds! Its a shame because the setting is lovely apart from the midgies that were hanging around. Nice staff but the food and drink let them down.

You can really tell that the people who run the Garden Station Cafe care about food. Nothing mass produced here. Gorgeous soup, beautiful hand carved ham in the well filled sandwiches, and home made cakes to die for! We went for aftenoon tea (soup, sandwich, cake), and it blew us away. Good value given the portion size and quality of the food, we will definitley be back with friends. The decor is chintzy and a little quirky, we loved it. The chairs are a little fragile looking, but nothing to worry about really. The people who run this place deserve to do well. I left a larger than normal tip, because they deserved it. Truly. Downside - a bit off the beaten track (or maybe that is an upside...), but well worth the pleasant drive.

The Garden Station is in a lovely setting in a beautiful part of Northumbria. The garden is lovely and great for sitting outside if the weather is obliging. Inside has a cosy feel. The four of us had a Groupon deal which included soup, sandwiches, cake and tea for all. The food was all delicious and freshly made. The homemade cakes were especially good. I would highly recommend a visit.

This is the second time we have visited the garden station, the first time was a bit of a disaster, however we were invited back by the owner Philippa, and what a difference, just as it should be. Two lovely waitresses, both pleasant, friendly, and very helpful, the afternoon tea was outstanding with a very good choice of sandwiches, homemade cakes, and scones. The garden is so picturesque, and you can take a walk along the old rail track, which is worth doing. There is car parking spaces, its such a quaint place, it is well worth a visit. It is well signposted in Langley.

This is a great place to stop at for tea and cakes. This delightful venue is a former railway station closed in 1950, but has now become a visitor attraction on account of its gardens. After a visit for tea and cake, we enjoyed the walk around the garden and associated path through the nearby woods. The cake was excellent and home made. Prices were reasonable. The cafe is located in the former waiting room which is adorned by fine china and many local momentos along with paintings for sale.In short, a venue with great character.

This is my 2nd review. Thought I'd give it a year then give it another try. I was never struck on this place in the past, for the reasons highlighted in my previous review. Those opinions were subjective however. This time it was just bad. We had bought Groupon vouchers for afternoon tea. (2 for £8 which sounds ok) However this small cafe were clearly inundated with these and we were unable to get booked (yes it is a cafe but we had to book) within the expiry date. By arrangement with them they agreed to extend the date, sothat was ok. We were booked for 12 noon and arrived at about 1150. It was busy but not full. Despite being June it was cold and most people there including me, kept theor coats on. It took around 15 minutes before our order was taken, and a further 15 minutes before our drinks arrived.A further 5 mins after they'd served the tea before the table was cleared from the previous occupants. The tea was completely finished before the finger sandwiches arrived( we had been there for 50 mins by now) the scones and cake arrived 10 mins after we'd finished the sandwiches. The tea and coffee were long gone so not a very pleasurable experience. The quality of the food was variable. The sandwiches were extremely fresh and tasty, but tiny. ( also they got mine wrong but I kept quiet as I did not want to wait another 50 mins) The scone was good (if small)  And the Victoria sponge was small and way too dry. (and nothing to wash it down with) At the Groupon price this would have been reasonable value (just) at £4 . But for the appallingly slow service, the quantity and the way it was served, if I had to pay full price I might have refused. Judging by some of the other reviews this doesn't look like they were having a bad day. I won't be going back.

We found this via a groupon voucher but would return another time , despite the long drive ,when friends are visiting us. It's a tiny cafe in the converted waiting room/ticket office of the former Langley Station, painted in ice cream pastels & retaining many old features.Plenty of books on the windowsill ,in one we found a picture of it during it's heyday. The walls are used as a mini gallery each table having a list with details & prices. A small selection of plants are for sale in the pretty garden. The service was friendly & we didn't wait unduly but we were on a trip out not rushing over a lunch break! Our sandwiches were clearly made up for us after we placed our order, not hanging around drying out. There are 3 woodland walks marked out & I loved the sign at the gate to " our canine visitors: please keep your owner on a lead at all times & ensure they scoop your poop" . We saw no evidence to suggest that visiting canines weren't adhering to this!

We visited this station on a sunny day for a prebooked afternoon tea. We had a warm welcome and a choice of reserved tables. The waitress explained the choices to us and then returned to take our order. We were given a lovely large pot of tea and the food arrived on a glass tiered stand. Unusually you could only choose one type of sandwich so we each chose differently and shared. the bread was beautiful and soft and the two fillings we chose were delicious; cheese savoury and cheese and tomato. We each had a fruit scone over a cheese scone served with a good amount of jam and cream. One scone was rather overcooked so again we shared but on cutting into it and eating it was feather light in texture. We both chose the bakewell slice for our piece of cake. They were huge! Delicious too with just the right balance of jam and almond flavour. The room itself is quite narrow but quaintly decorated. The china was all mismatched but all very nice .Around the walls were an exhibtion and a sheet accompanied it explaining what each picture was and how much it was to buy. There were cards for sale too and some jewellery pieces. In a futher room were various items for sale but what put me off buying a spatula was the fact that there was no price tag on it or on several items and the shelves and pots of cream could have done with a quick dusting. To be fair the doors were open and the garden was being tended so i imagine dust had easily and only recently blown in.There was one toilet, clean with paper towels or handrier and a choice of soaps. The service was friendly and in the main efficient although we did have to ask twice for glasses of tap water. I think one girl serving was probably just learning, the others were chatty and friendly. Outside were some lovely plants for sale and due to the lovely weather we enjoyed the walk along the old track which we veered off and ended up entering the rear of the sawmill below where we also looked around! Two ladies were working very hard weeding etc and the gardens looked very nice when we left.Parking is tricky as the lane is narrow. There is on street parking. One minor gripe was the fact that our table was not wiped over before our food was put down. This I am sure was an oversight.

Perhaps those running this quaintly attractive former railway station have found the success of a recent Groupon promotion too much to handle. The afternoon tea of sandwiches, scone and cake is of decent enough quality but the service is pedestrian. Not worth the 60 mile round trip from Newcastle but perhaps interesting if one happens to be passing on the way to Alston or beyond.

Seriously, I sat 15 minutes waiting to be brought a small bit of cake that I could see about 5 yards away and the staff weren't even busy. FIFTEEN MINUTES.Anyway... my wife and I took my mum to the Garden Station back in March as a treat. A couple of years back, we'd been considering it as a wedding venue and, as we'd never actually got round to visiting, figured it should make a nice day out. From the website, it looked beautiful, but unfortunately we left feeling let down on a number of fronts:1. On the day we turned up, it was bitterly cold and snowing, so getting indoors and warm was a priority, but it was still pretty cold in the café. The kitchen may have been warm, but the customers kept their coats on. Some kind of effective heating system would be a good move in winter.2. The portion sizes were a bit rubbish, to be honest. I think it was about £2.50 for a really small bit of cake.3. The service was terrible. Really, really slow. I could've excused it if the café had been busy, but it wasn't. The waitresses were just INCREDIBLY bad at time management. Seriously, I've never known anything like it.4. The food itself was just… you know… okay. Nothing that made me want to overlook the downsides of the visit, or indeed to hurry back.5. The garden, which I assume is normally a key attraction, was covered in dog crap. You had to be careful where you put your feet down, which rather detracted from what might've been a nice wander in the grounds. So, on the whole, while I don't particularly enjoy writing negative reviews, I feel I had to write this one. I hope the owners see it and take it as useful, actionable feedback.
