Paxtons Fish and Chip restaurant in Northumberland

Very expensive I was charged £9.60 for 2 bags of chips and 2 cans of pop and the chips weren't great at all, very crunchy and mostly scrap ends. When looking online later photos uploaded by owner of price list works out the cost should of been £4.80 which is more realistic

This might be the worst fish and chips I've ever had in my life. The potatoes and fish were very old. It was obvious that it had been in old oil for a long time. The price was not cheap at all. The service staff was very sullen. I was very disappointed that I had such a bad experience in a very central location. Please be very careful when taking your order

Very nice food equally nice service

I've been using Paxton's for many years, and I've always rated them. This time was a real disappointment - a small dry piece of curled up fish and a very small portion of chips. The chips were tasty at least, but there weren't enough of them and the fish was really poor. Over a tenner for a small, subpar meal - don't think I'll be back.

Excellent Haddock and chips. Shame you can't eat downstairs, but having fresh fish and chips in the Sele was probably better. As long as its sunny!

As of working away in Hexham myself and my work colleague decided to go for dinner and this establishment was our choice. Upon walking in everything looked lovely and clean. We purchased our order and stood waiting, whislt waiting we decided to ask the very polite young lady behind the counter what different things mean on the menu because of being out the area (west midlands to be precise) we wanted to know, which isnt a bad thing to do, but to be met with a lady who came from the back shouting at us saying we were taking the p*ss and being horrible is an absoloute joke. I think we disturbed her bath time in lard as she didnt look very clean. Service from young girl 10 out of 10 but atritude from chef was 0 out of 10 the useless greasy ogre

We ordered 2 chip butties with curry sauce, 1 small chips with curry and two cans of pop and it came to £19.20 which I feel is extortionate, although I have to say it was delicious, but certainly not worth the best part of twenty quid. Also the lady that served us was dour. Definitely wouldn't give them repeat custom

Fish ready to sell straight from the shelf. Far too many now do cook to order wich IMO is no longer fast food, The best qulity I've had in Northumberland. Didnt like the peas but I think thats a regional thing (very bland). and the Staff are very Northumbrian 😉😂 100% will be going back.

Fish was outstanding and delicious. However, chips were sharp, wooden and re-cooked to maximum dryness. Sausage mediocre. Very expensive 🙁

Haddock and chips to take away. Large haddock cooked fresh, portion of chips was large and tasty. Service was friendly and prompt. Great experience, would not hesitate to visit again if I am in the area.

I ordered fish and chips with mushy peas and a battered sausage and chips with curry sauce. The fish and chips was perfect mushy peas were dreadful, my partner had the sausage and chips with curry sauce and has been viontley sick after eating it the curry had a strange smell to it but wasn't off putting. He is currently being treated for food poisoning from this chip shop the only thing he had consumed that day was his sandwiches and toast in the morning. I will be avoiding this place in the future

Best fish and chip shop I've been too! The chips are delicious and cooked to perfection. The menu has the widest range of options I've ever seen at a chippy. The deep fried black pudding and haggis were amazing! The staff were excellent and the service was great. Definitely go try it out if you haven't already.

Always great food and service from Paxtons staff. I believe I am the person the other reviewer (Jan 2022) mentions as I did make small talk at the door with 1 of the staff about our children returning to school following covid whilst my food was being prepared. The shop still operates on a door service so no one is allowed in yet so something doesn't add up in the review, perhaps its more personal. However I've shopped here many times over the 20+ years living in lovely Hexham. Top staff, top service and top food.

Oh dear! Has this shop changed hands or was it an 'off' day? Meagre portion of overcooked and some rock hard chips, tasted very greasy too. Thin, non battered fish cakes - didn't they used to be battered?? Not nice this visit RETURNED ... and much better, lovely fish, lots of chips - fishcakes tasty too!

Wasn't impressed, the fish was overcooked, rubbery and stringy, gave the impression of having been frozen and the chips were overly greasy, not at all enjoyable and went in the bin, won't be back.

This has to be be the worst experience ever ! i will never give this bunch of abusive rude and prejudice staff any business ever again ! A paying customer left to feel out in the cold and discriminated against as a school friend was more important, even ignorant enough to not wear a mask inside & left feeling bullied as i stood up for myself ! awful ! Hexham is supposed to be a happy place to live , i think not ! fuming right now, will never eat there again , rather starve to death than spend any money in this dive ever again ! SHOCKING ! food wad binned and went to a rival business opposite the County Pub that were polite and efficient and food was amazing .

Proper nice fish and chips. The chicken was great too. So good we forgave them for running out of gravy.

Good food at a good price, no eating in at the moment, but if the weather is good there's plenty of seating around the square.

Bought fish chips and curry sauce. The chips were the worst I've ever had , they had black bits all over the , they were hard and really not cooked for long enough, the fish was quite nice , nice batter on the fish , curry sauce was quite watery for my liking , I would never go back.

We both fancied Fish & Chips after our drive up to Hexham for the week. We’d previously been to Hexham a couple of weeks before and said we’d definitely try Paxton’s. We arrived to find no queue, we ordered two Fish & Chips with one curry sauce and one gravy to share between us both. It was ready within minutes, and we took it back to the caravan to have. It came in trays so it was kept warm and I must say I wasn’t disappointed!!! The portion size was perfect and the meal itself was really really delicious!!! We went for the extra hot curry sauce the certainly had a kick to it. We don’t have fish and chips often but I can honestly say it was so nice!! Definitely recommend Paxton’s!!

Chose this chippy as there was a queue which is always a good sign. Very good meal with good chips, the right portion size and a good helping of sauce. Served in cardboard containers and a paper bag so full marks on the eco effort too

Not a massive portion, fish wasn't cooked to order and was cold, salt and vinegar was extra, no forks or napkins supplied. With no other chippy in the area they can get away with it I suppose.

Cod bits and chips ordered, unfortunately took approx 30 mins standing outside in the cold which was disappointing, more to do with being disorganised than busy. Food was nice though.

After just coming from Hospital me and my mum were hungry and were pleased to enjoy these lovely fish n chips. Some of best I have tried any where including any seaside resort. Been a chef it's makes you aware of fresh food and taste. Lovely white flaking white flesh. Hot and good size portion. More importantly friendly staff. I would come back again x

We had it for take away. One of the best fish and chips I ever had. We had cod and haddock and personally recommend the haddock. Flaky fish, good batter. Thin, crunchy and not soggy. Chips were also really good. Really good experience.

Amateur. Cold chips. Indifferent fish. Not the best welcome. Allegedly the champions of hexham and the market place and all independent traders. Not so much here. Grumpy service. Below average food. Griping between staff. When asked by another customer about the benefits of the proposed changes made to the market place gave them very short shrift. Feedback from others has been similar. Also why not open on sundays?

We very much enjoyed our lunch at Paxton’s. Cod and chips, and haddock and chips, both were delicious, freshly cooked, and the portions were extremely generous. The cafe downstairs was clean and nicely decorated, and we will definitely return on our next visit to Hexham.

Lovely little fish and chip shop, have been here a few times over the years and it never disappoints. Friendly and polite staff. Great fish and chips which are never greasy. Only downside is the seating area is rather small so can get people standing on the stairs waiting and watching which is rather rude when you're eating.

I'm a frequent visitor to Paxton's chippy, mainly because their gravy is the best in town! The haddock is delicious too and the chips are always tasty. Very reasonable prices in both the take away and restaurant. A great little family run independent business.

Found this little chippy by accident. Happy accident! The family had plaice and haddock that was amazingly battered - crisp and very light. Great chips, saveloys and extras. Service downstairs was attentive and friendly and the overall price was very reasonable. After two weeks of exploring the Lothians and Northumberland, this was the best fish and chips. Thank you.

Had a few good bags of chips from this place but now avoyd. Not very nice. I went to the restaurant when my family came from out of town. It was embarrassing using this place.

You walk in to a take-out fish and chips. There is a dining room downstairs. We thought we would eat there, no, the prices are different. They didn't both to ask if we wanted take out or eat in. We did take out, no utensils were offered, no condiments were offered, I'm not even sure if we got napkins. The fish and chips was OK, the chicken "burger" was barely OK. They didn't even think to ask if we wanted chips with it. We were obviously not natives and they did little to anticipate our needs. We ate on a bench at the abbey!

Owner chatted to us as we both have four girls! Family run business, beautiful food and such a lovely atmosphere. I'm a regular for sure, kids meals good value for money and fish was crisp and meaty

Spent 18 pounds on fish and chips for family takeout . I don’t know how long fish had been cooked but it was extremely dry and batter was that dry it was like cardboard. Expected better than this, I have had fish and chips in the restaurant part of the shop, they were lovely,Unfortunately today they were awful, tasted as though they had been kept warm for a while and dried out.

As a treat, I sometimes have a small portion of chips to take away. The portion is the right size for a stop-gap and the chips have always been nice too, especially with salt, vinegar and batter.On this visit I decided to push the boat out and have cod, small chips and curry sauce. As soon as I was served, I went to my car, which was practically outside the front door, took my food out of the paper bag and tucked in, only to find that it was all barely warm.The chips were OK, the fish was too greasy and very thin, and if this was a "regular" cod I'd hate to see how tiny a small one must be. The "mild" (or "tasteless") curry sauce was also just warm.I don't understand how food can be so cold so quickly, and at £7.30 it certainly wasn't worth the money.

Decided to stop here after over indulging the night before. Tiny little restaurant and packed to the rafters so our party of 9 had to commandeer a couple of tables. Food was excellent, fish was fresh and the kids were raving about the chicken goujons. Win win hangover cure and happy kids

I am a regular visitor to Paxtons and after trying many fish and chip shops across the region ( including award winning fryers ) I can honestly say Paxtons are still my favourite.

Just such a nice place. In the market square by the Abbey. Take-out upstairs but there is a small restaurant downstairs. Spotlessly clean, very nice style and decor. The service is always fantastic- friendly and fast. Have never had anything but excellent food here. Generous portions, reasonable prices. It is very much a local place with local chatter and friendly faces. One of my favourite places for traditional fish and chips. #loveHexham.

Chips are good, the spicy curry sauce isn't spicy. Also they do scotch pies hadn't had one in years it was much tastier than I remember to boot

have eaten here a few times, but will not go again. it's in a good position in the market square. but, food is average, and nothing special. the owner is unfriendly and obsessed with people's use of the toilet, in the downstairs shoe box of an eating area, taking more interest in this than in serving people, and consequently giving off a nasty atmosphere to all those who buy food to eat in on the lower floor.

Although we live in North Lancashire, near the Cumbrian border, whenever we stay in Hexham, a visit to Paxtons is a must. You are always assured of excellent, friendly service and quality fish and chips. We were not disappointed on our latest visit!

Takeaway with quaint little restaurant downstairs. We ate in the restaurant and the fish and chips were delicious. Very generous portions, good service, friendly staff, pleasant and very clean surroundings. Good value for money. What more could you want!

We arrived on holiday on the Saturday night and as is our normal tradition we hunted for a fish and chip shop for our first dinner. We came across Paxtons and the food was very reasonably priced and very tasty, it did not disappoint. Highly recommended.

Ordered 5 fish bites and chips for GBP5.40. Fish bites were a reasonable size, moist and flakey, covered in light, crisp batter. The chips, which it was claimed were peeled and cut into chips on site, were a disappointing,. Seemed to have sat for a while and were a little soft.

I do like this fish 'n' chip shop, it does good quality fish in the old style batter and it's very tasty. It's a bit greasy, but that's what gives it its taste. There's a lot of extra things besides fish, but I've never tried them. I like the staff enormously, they're very friendly and chatty and give excellent service

Having had a busy morning, called here for a late lunch.

We have been to Paxton many times in the past and enjoy the fish and chip special meals. However, we called with our grandson recently before going to a visiting circus. Our grandson is a vegetarian. We looked for the children's meal and found only burger, fish or scampi were available. We asked if we could exchange the 'meat' content for a cheese patty and were told it was not possible. We could only have a patty and give him some of our chips or have an adult veggie burger meal, which would have been too much for him to eat?? We found this very odd and would have loved to have seen some initiative shown in this instance.... Perhaps your menu needs to be reviewed???
