The Gandhi in Basildon

First time I’ve been here on 13/6/2023 and I was very impressed, totally faultless, will most certainly return…😀😀👍👍

Ate here on a Tuesday evening (7-10pm). We were the only customers eating in the restaurant for most of the evening (one other family arrived later for an hour) although some takeaways were being collected / delivered. Attentive and friendly service. All of the food was well cooked and enjoyable - we each finished all of our dishes from starters to biryani; from madras to tikka; and from masala to naan. Decent tea and coffee at the end. The restaurant is a little basic with regards to both the decor and the furniture, but it served its purpose and we had a very enjoyable evening. We spent a lot of time chatting as a four and we were not hurried by the staff at all. Happy to return.

To echo other reviews dreadful customer service. Ordered via Deliveroo with an hour to delivery. After 1 hr 15 mins called restaurant to be told it’s another 30 mins for delivery. I cancelled and asked for a refund. Money taken from bank account and after trying to call restaurant contacted Deliveroo. Had to wait 4 days for money to be refunded by them. They are over committing on the orders that they cannot deliver on. A shame as have eaten in the restaurant and food was nice. Should have read previous delivery reviews and will not be going there again.

Hour late. Prawn and mushroom biriyani average. Yaris daal was a yellow soup with a few lentils at the bottom

Ghandi is a compact basic restaurant , the staff are very polite but definitely not in a hurry . However when the food arrived , the portions were generous , very tasty - and when the bill arrived it was less than we expected to be , so it was worth the wait.

Took 2 and a half hours to get our starters + mains out. The food hardly compensated for my lack of will to live when it arrived.

Went for a valentine meal, on the day , didn’t book but they managed to fit us in. Was very busy, which it’s not normal like. As always food was fantastic, and beer was going down well. Would recommend this place to anyone.

WE go for a meal at the Gandhi every 8 weeks of so as we have to travel from Southend now. Never had a bad meal or bad service from these lovely people. food is always hot and very flavourful.

Last 2 times its taken an hour and a half to deliver food. Tonight after waiting over an hour an a half I called them to find out where my takeaway was. It turned up 10 minutes later and cold. Disappointed after along wait. Ghandi needs to sort this out. I won't use them anymore.

We have been here on numerous occasions. it does what it says on the tin. No frills, just tasty food served quickly - by no way is it a 'classy' restaurant, but its good food. The wine list is very basic so would stick to beer or spirits.

Really loved this restaurant, the food was amazing and great value for Money. The staff were so friendly and really willing to go the extra mile. Would defiantly recommend this restAurant, they also do taste cards which we thought was great. 10/10

Having previously been to this restaurant with friends I went with high hopes and expectations given the impressive quality of our previous visit. I couldn’t have been more disappointed this time around. I booked on a Monday for the following Saturday. I was told this was absolutely fine. Having given my name, phone number and booked a time slot I was fairly confident my reservation was secured. Oh how I was very, very mistaken. Myself and friends arrived there on time to celebrate a joint birthday but we were greeted with a full restaurant and told there had been no reservations at all. I challenged this by showing the staff my call logs on my mobile, clearly showing a call on the Monday to the restaurant. I was told “nice try” whilst being laughed at and embarrassed in front of a large group of people. Yeet. I found this customer service to be absolutely shocking and unprofessional. From messing up reservations to atrocious interpersonal communication skills, I can say that I will not be returning to this restaurant anytime soon and even if I wanted to they’d probably screw up the reservation anyway.

This is now our favourite place for a curry! Old school with no fancy decor, just great food. The staff are really friendly and advised my little boy on his first Indian food which he loved.

Good fast service, nice starters, good price, polite waiters and they took my taste card! Great stuff! Cobra was in bottle or draught, nice touch!

Whilst looking at the menu outside this restaurant, two young lads walked out after finishing their meal. We asked them what the place was like, and their reply that it was the best in Billericay persuaded us to try it I think they were have a joke on us. The surroundings look like they could do with a major refurbishment, and the two other couples on a Saturday evening should have rung alarm bells. The one member of staff on show didn't really seem interested in being there, and went away for long periods of time. I think he was going out to help with the cooking. When I asked for a Tiger beer, a number of stacked boxes had to be moved so he could get to the fridge, and when the beer did turn up, it was warm. The food was nothing to write about, so I won't. Not bad, per se. but with another Indian restaurant restaurant twenty yards away it really should try a lot harder I can still see those two lads laughing away as they walk home.

Steer clear of this place. Pre-booked at least 4 week prior to going there this evening to celebrate a friend's Birthday and the service could not have been any poorer. Arrived at the booked time and received drinks about 20mins after arriving. Received poppadoms’ 1 hour and 15mins after arriving and received our Starters (Not even all of them) 1 hour and 25mins after arrival. None of the Starter were hot and it was at this point that we abandoned the sitting. We paid for our drinks and refused to pay for Starters and poppadoms’ 'When we raised concerns about the service for the final time, the person in charge asked us, 'What do you want me to do?' That was it. Certainly won't be going there again. This was an appalling experience. Save your money and go to the Kosthuree Indian Restaurant just up the road. They took us in at very short notice and salvaged the evening for us with nice, hot tasty food and an excellent level of service.

Fuimos para una cena temprana no haber comido allí durante años.

La comida era muy sabrosa y si quieres un restaurante indio antiguo colegio estereotipado, este lugar es para ti. El ambiente era bueno, la decoración necesita una actualización desesperado pero disfrutamos muchísimo de la comida tradicional y lime! pickle A un precio razonable, volvería pero mucha competencia en High Street.

I honestly think this is the best Indian food I have ever tasted. I have ordered it from there 50+ and have never been disappointed

Went last night for a birthday meal and the food was great. Big portion sizes. All food was hot and tasted great! We took the leftover food home as it was so nice. Reasonably priced and the staff are very nice. Will always return.

Tenía un poco de día, todo lo que tenemos, ¿no? De todos modos, "fantasía India a llevar, así que después de un rato nos llegó con un el Ghandi, personal muy agradable, pedimos pollo tikka madras, byriani + Otros 3 platos. Mientras esperábamos nos tomamos una copa, encantador frío Cobra, una decoración bastante agradable y aire acondicionado. Y una larga charla con personal. esperar más (no demasiado largo) en casa, puedo decir que la comida era muy buena, volveremos. Mejor que otros alrededor de la ciudad y a++ entrega más? Y algunas ofertas de la semana.

Comida realmente deliciosa india y buena relación calidad-precio, pero los tiempos de espera durante los períodos puede ser lento y también para la colección y las entregas de comida para llevar. No comer aquí regularmente y es nuestro restaurante indio de elección. Me encanta la música india jugar en el fondo.

Una buena baratas india. Mi local, llevo muchos años viniendo aquí y siempre disfrutar de la comida. El servicio puede ser muy lento, así que no vayas si tienes prisa.

We went as two couples and had a really good meal, generous portions accompanied by some good Cobra Indian beer. Extensive menu and very friendly, knowledgeable and helpful staff.

I like the food in the Ghandi whether eat in or takeaway & last night was no exception.However one of the waiters was miserable & unfriendly. I dropped my spoon on the floor before the meal arrived & he kindly picked it up for me & put it straight back on the table! I asked for a clean one and was given one. The one that had been on the floor was 'thrown' back in the cutlery tray!We ate our meal which was good and the same waiter brought up a basket with hot towels. He pretty much threw the basket on the table We actually laughed as we could not believe what he had done!Some hygiene training & manners would not go amiss.

This is restaurant can get overlooked as down a small courtyard. Always have a nice meal here. The restaurant inside is quite dated so feels like you are going back in time. But who cares when the food is good :-)

Staff were friendly enough but take- aways clearly came before seated customers so we waited longer than I would have liked. When the food arrived I was disappointed, the Balti was bland and full of onions, I can only liken it to a chicken stew rather than a curry, it clearly lacked spice. My wife's jalfrezi was dripping in oil and looked awful. Worst curry ever and will not be returning.

Used a taster card on a Wednesday night - real good value for money and no queries or aggravation using it. Food was lovely - lamb Rezala ( a bit like a lamb keema but with mince lamb and pieces of lamb) was particularly good. Nothing dripping in grease, every thing tasty, warm plates, cooked nicely. Pleasant and efficient service and smiling staff. Will be going again very soon.

love coming to this place but last few times waitng time has been terrible waited a hour for starterslathou it was lovely and nice takes way too long and we wasnt the only ones eithermain course arrived about 20 mins after and was great just a shame about the waitalso had few nice cobra draft as well ;)

My wife,daughter and I visited the Gandhi on Friday night, we arrived at 7 and were the only ones there, but we shouldnt have worried as we were shown to a table and ordered drinks and popperdoms, by the time they arrived the resturant began to fill up. The food was some of the best indian food I have had in a very long time, we also had wine soft drinks and coffee, the whole meal came to less than £65 (which we thought was great value) We will certainly come back and even get our takeaways from there in the future.

I would give this restaurant 0 stars if I could! What a shocking experience! Our starters took more than 40 minutes to arrive with no apology for the delay, another 20 minutes for the mains so already poor. The main reason for our visit was to take advantage of the 50% off tastecard offer. The manager made up his own terms and conditions and offered us a massive £7 off our bill! Wow! When we challenged him he apologised for the delay and said that it was our own fault for ordering a starter... Have been a customer here for many years but will never come back. What an awful, awful restaurant this is.

We have consistently used this restaurant for about a year now. The food is freshly cooked, flavoursome and very good value. The drinks are reasonably priced and service is good. We normally use this restaurant for take aways now as well.Top tip.Order papadums. As the food is all freshly cooked it will take about 30-40 mins to arrive

Good Indian on the High Street. Was treated really well - we ordered a proper feast and got freebies thrown in. Curries are good, atmosphere is nice and family friendly but can be a bit quiet.

We have eaten in the gandi for many years, and usually had a very nice curry. Last weekend howevwer was disappointing. The waiter didint seem to want to "wait", our starter took 40 mins, then had to ask for the sauces. The main course took another 20mins. When I asked what had taken it so long,I was told it was the fish that took a long time to cook!!! It tasted of metal. Not nice. The bill was wrong too and then the waiter argued with my husband. All in all a very disappointing curry.

Stumbled across this place by accident. Took the kids at around 5.30 on a Saturday night when it wasn't busy. The service was good, they were good with the kids and we couldn't complain about the food. All round good experience.

Where do I start?! BigD and the rest of the waiting staff can't do enough to make your Asian dining experience anything but first class. From the moment you walk in the door and are shown to one of the 12 opulent tables the magic starts. Those simple, delicate but to the point four little words are so important and make me salivate whilst I write this review; 'How many popadoms sir?' Mmmmmmmmmm, the best lime pickle in Billericay bar none. Some people have said they are glad the fish tank has been removed but I for one are a little upset. How many first class eateries let you watch the majestic koi whilst eating? In terms of the menu there is an excellent selection of the typical Indian fare you would expect which is always fresh and presented with excellence. The best part of the experience is when you quote "BigD10" at the end of your meal and you receive 10% off your bill. Excellent value! BigD and co keep up the good work!! P.S BigD's nickname is ironic

Over the years I have had many great meals here (mostly after visiting the local pubs).Good food at good value and very nice staff with friendly service.If your looking for a quiet/romatic meal on a Friday or Saturday evening id suggest going elsewhere or eating early in the evening as they do get a fair few groups in each weekend straight from the pub.If your looking for a place to eat after a few drinks in the town id highly recommend it. (Or away from busy weekends)The takeaway is also good value.

The guys who work at The Gandhi are a true credit to the Restaurant. Always greeted with a smile. The good is delicious (Chicken Dansak is immense) and very good value for money. This is my favourite restaurant in the Essex area. Massive recommendation. A*

The Ghandi is a middle of the range curry house in pretty much every aspect. The restaurant is small with around 8 or 9 tables creating an intimate atmosphere, it has a nice feel to it without having any outstanding features. The staff are very friendly without being particularly competent and the food is, well, ok. The menu doesn't offer too much beyond that found in most curry houses and the standard is acceptable without being anything to praise. That said, I certainly wouldn't dissuade anyone from eating here, the staff are very pleasant and overall it is decent value. A restaurant that I expect gets most of it's custom from regulars rather than people going for a special occasion.

Hadn't visited the Gandhi in a long time, due to a previous bad experience, but had heard a few good reports and decided to give it another go.Food was ok, except they got my order wrong, service was ok I suppose, the food was no more than average, there are much better Indian Restaurants localy than this!!

Just got home from having a lovely curry at the Gandhi. Good price , very busy . Great flavour in my curry! Would return

I popped in here last week with family. It no longer has the fish tank in the window that used to be sparsely occupied by morose looking fish that laboured their way from one end of their prison to the next. The Gandhi has had a makeover but is still very lacklustre. The servers are disinterested and even chose not to put the lights up so we could see what meagre offerings were on the menu.Food arrived and was adequate. No more, no less. Of my nine pieces of chicken, three were actually potato. Clearly the management want to keep costs down and serve spuds instead of clucky.The food was cheap and a tad tasteless. Next time perhaps somewhere else.
