It's 4 hours later and I can only just move... Visited a few times for food and drinks whilst visiting the area over the last couple of years. Always busy which speaks volumes but the staff take it all in their stride, really friendly and efficient. The food is great. 2 quiche starters and 2 butternut squash wellingtons with all the trimmings. Delicious. Somehow the husband found room for one of Eric's special meringue desserts whilst I was looking for somewhere to lie down and recover :-). Not our first visit and won't be our last. Top tip - book. The staff accommodated some walk ins today and and yesterday when we were in for drinks but don't find yourself disappointed.

They were very busy and managed to fit in a table of 5. We all wanted a Sunday lunch and were not disappointed. Really good size portions and quick service. Wonderful desserts too. We went through to the beer garden for a relaxing drink in the sun. A great selection of beers on tap. Friendly staff, nice atmosphere. Great place to go

Great Sunday lunch - gammon, lamb and beef with the usual accompaniments. All nice and hot, tasty and plentiful. Service was friendly and helpful. We ate in the dining room which was spacious and not overcrowded. Our party of 4 had main courses paid and went for a lovely walk around the area then came back for coffee and amazing cakes from the bakery sitting outside in the sunshine. A lovely village pub - would definitely recommend to all.

Update: Finally had food here! Lovely service and great food. Great flavours, would recommend. Pop in here for a coffee. They serve proper coffee. Reasonably priced. Have a bakery. The roast dinners look incredible, certainly want to come back to try one.

Myself and my partner came for a meal Fri 16th March the food was amazing lamb shank was to die for I had the duo French meal beef bourginon and chicken it was amazing staff very pleasant and service very good would definitely be back.

Consistently excellent food and service

We were staying locally, so it was nice to have this interesting Inn on the doorstep. Not only a bar and restaurant, but also a bakery! A huge French influence awaits you in the menu, maybe because the chef is French! Onion soup to start ( literally a meal in itself) then a duo of French classics for main. All served well and efficiently.

Went there on Sunday after our walk, to celebrate my husband birthday. Had a table in very private area, service magnificent, food excellent. It was one of the best Sunday roast that I've had. My son (3 years old) so happy with his roast of lamb. I recommend to prebook the table as it was extremely busy. Thank you so much for an amazing experience. Will be comming back very soon.

The food here is outstanding 👌! You must book the restaurant. Do not rely on just walking in. Cosy place to stay. Breakfast really sets you up for the day. Very friendly welcoming staff. Have been before and will definitely go again.

Lovely meal friendly staff which made it a pleasant experience. Arrived a bit late and stressed as road closed and we did a large diversion. Really efficient service. Beautiful looking and tasty food.

They organised a good table so that our dog would not be distracted by others. The service was prompt but not pushy and the plentiful food was well cooked and presented. We have visited regularly over the last 25 years and will continue to do so

We’re new to the area having bought our first caravan. We couldn’t wait to try The Game Cock today on our first walk in the area having read amazing reviews on Tripadvisor and also great reviews from family. Greeted at the bar by the most attentive barman. He was chatty and made the time to welcome our 2 dogs with treats. Obviously someone that thrives on customer service and hospitality. The pub was serving food till 3pm and reopening at 5pm for food. It’s popular so best book a table in advance. We didn’t realise this and went to the bar at 2:58pm….. the barman checked with the kitchen and they agreed to serve us. I had the fish and chips with mushy peas (proper chips, homemade tartare sauce) my partner had the Beef bourguignon with gratin potatoes. Both meals arrived within 15 mins. Both fresh, red hot and absolutely delicious. The Thwaites real ale was clear and obviously this cask is looked after well by the pub. We will be back next weekend.

We were a big group of 10 adults and 10 kids. The service and hospitality we received was brilliant and the food fantastic. We will definitely return in the future. As a group we’ve been to several other pubs in the area and have never felt this welcome.

Came here a few years ago after running the Yorkshire three peaks and the roast dinner I had tasted incredible and I thought to myself that it was the best roast dinner I had ever had but wasn't sure if that was because I'd just run 24 miles! I returned yesterday having done zero running whatsoever and can confirm the roast dinner is still the best I've ever had (I've had lots) The service is lovely and we were made to feel so welcome along with our dog too. Will return.

Mr Husband and I visited yesterday 2nd December. We arrived approx 2.15pm and the pub was very busy. A very helpful barman/ restaurant manager Dave found us a table in one of the cosy wood paneled dining rooms. He explained the additional dishes on the menu in some detail and gave us some helpful recommendations. I ordered the beef bourguignon with a small portion of chips and Hubby ordered the duo of chicken a la moutarde with a small portion of the beef bourguignon as well with potatoes au gratin.When it came we were amazed at the quality. The beef was so tender and tasty and likewise the chicken.The chef was obviously French (Eric) who we understand is also the landlord. We eat out quite regularly especially in the Lake District and can honestly say that compared to some so called highly renowned very expensive restaurants there the Game Cock comes top of our list. The menu has imagination and flair combined with a “ can do attitude” which makes all the difference. We shall be visiting there again soon and will recommend it to all our friends.

On a crisp Saturday in December 3 friends, a dog and I visited this pub for lunch. We all chose different mains but all of us enjoyed everything and there were no clean plates. Between us, we had the Fish Pie, Game Cock Burger, Boeuf Bourginion and Poulet au Moutard. Some French and British classics very well prepared and cooked. 2 of us had room for desserts, a lemon tart and a sticky toffee pudding. Both of which were highly decorated and very tasty. The barman was very knowledgeable and helpful. We will be back for more!

Had one of the best meals (lamb shank with gratin) I've ever had here. Lovely starter and dessert too. Fantastic staff and a lovely pub which, despite the very high quality of the food, is still very much a pub rather than feeling like a stuffy, high-end restaurant.

What a great traditional country pub, warm and well kept. A welcoming and friendly place that you must visit if in the area. The food is outstanding, every course was fresh and great tasting. The bread from the in-house bakery was excellent too. No complaints whatsoever, it was welcoming, calm and relaxing with friendly efficient staff and delicious food. You can also visit the bakery and take away some of the breads and desserts too. Top marks, well done.

This is a gem in the middle of lots of beautiful walks, unfortunately a lot of them up hills, but the views are amazing. But when you get down, eventually, you can get food and a service that is truly merveilleuse. I have eaten everywhere and the food here is devine. You feel completely welcomed and cared for and Dave the front of house is a gem.

What a treat to finish a lovely walk and wind up in The Game Cock! We had heard many people talking about this place and we are so glad we came ourselves! It is very dog friendly and had such a lovely and authentic feel, including an open fire! We had the most phenomenal lunch, the confit duck parmentier is a must, the mash topping will be hard to beat (butter and parmesan, need I say more)! The staff were all delightful, incredibly friendly and helpful. If this was your local pub, you'd struggle to not call in every night!

Visited the Game Cock after a wet and windy walk around the Yorkshire Dales. We had our dog with us so were seated in the cosy bar area beside the fire. The waitress told us that the owner/chef was French which made sense when reading the menu as it was full of French classics. I knew I was in safe hands with a French chef in the kitchen so went for the classics. The French Onion soup, Duck Parmentier and Paris Brest were all exceptional. Rich, comforting and full of flavour. Great service (the chef even served us our mains and came back to make sure that we were enjoying our meal), great food and a great atmosphere. We couldn't eat another thing but the patisserie looked exceptional too. A true gem of a pub/restaurant in a beautiful location. I just wish it was my local!

Amazing food!!! Our Sunday Roast Dinner were perfect. We had mushrooms soup for starters and beef roast for dinner. It was absolutely divine. So taste!! We also bought croissants and pudding for later from their bakery.

I came here for a traditional Sunday dinner, and it was scrumptious! For starters, I had mushrooms. It was actually a thick soup with bread. It tasted like a Hungarian mushroom soup, and it was delicious! The main meal was roast beef, served with butternut squash, mashed potato, roasted potato, roasted parsnips, and cabbage. In the center was a Yorkshire pudding, all served with a side of gravy. It was a feast! It was also my introduction to Yorkshire pudding. What is it? A molded and baked, very slightly sweet bread cup with lovely brown gravy. I don't know if everyone's Yorkshire puffing is that good, but now I'm a fan! The service was superb. Always checking on us without being intrusive. A very friendly, well-done meal all around!

Last minute booking with a dog, super accommodating. They even gave our dog some free ice cream even though he did his best to block the way. Food was fantastic. Took bakery away for breakfast. Can’t recommend enough.
