Underwhelming experience, overpriced, not as good as we remember. The bao buns starter did not live up to the high expectations set by the outrageous cost of £17 (for a starter…what on earth was I thinking), served in a tiny bamboo basket with no plate, presumably I was supposed to eat it with my hands like a McDonalds burger...for £17...really!! BTW there was no coriander!! The steak, chorizo and mushroom pie was also not good value, whilst tasty it was small and there were only two tiny pieces of chorizo amongst the steak and mushroom, the chips were nice but appeared to be mass produced probably cut by a machine. The four of us originally intended to have desserts but we were so unimpressed we bought brownies and flapjack from one of the Christmas market stalls in the grounds, generous in size, delicious and a third of the cost of the Brasserie desserts at 3 for £9. Sorry Devonshire Arms, didn't hit the spot for us, we were a little embarrassed that we'd recommended it to our friends, wasn't worth the 2.5 hour round trip and doesn't compare well to other quality eateries we like to visit. We won't be back

Excellent and friendly service, great quality food, beautiful location and a lovely spa. We came for the fireworks and feast evening, and stayed over. Our room was great, and well supplied. With a stay you get an hour a day in the spa, but you need to book it in. The spa was fun, with usual sauna, steam-room and small pool, with additional treatments and a lounge you can have drinks in. The feast was magnificent, with lovely canapes waiting for us on arrival in The Brasserie. The evening was busy but even so, the service was excellent. After some lovely food (that we'd pre-ordered) we were ushered put into the garden to watch a truly excellent display of fireworks, set to music. I can highly recommend the evening and would happily return next year.

It was extremely expensive and not my type of food. This is not the fault of the hotel. What could have been addressed was the crowd of noisy, unruly children running around outside unsupervised by parents. Wouldn't have eaten there even if the food was to my taste. Spoilt what was supposed to be a quiet drink in a beautiful setting. If it had been dogs running loose and barking, I'm sure we would have been asked to leave.. ... but they wouldn't have been buying drinks!!

After a lovely walk around Bolton Abbey , my husband, daughter and myself arrived at the Devonshire Brasserie for my husband’s birthday lunch which we had previously booked online. I wish i’d taken the trouble to read the below average reviews before booking. To say that we where disappointed is an understatement, the place lacked atmosphere and was very quiet, I know other pubs/restaurants along the A59 which are much busier with good reputations but we thought it would be a nice change plus it’s near Bolton Abbey where we love to walk . I thought the menu was a little pricey (over £20 for a small pie) but we don’t mind if the food is very good. But unfortunately the food was average at best , cold mash, salty gravy, pale undercooked chips and a game of hunt the scallop on the Surf and Turf !! Also toilets in need of a serious refurbishment, all I can say is once visited is enough .

Second visit to the Devonshire Arms. A good experience on the whole but service was not up to standard. Staff were inattentive (waited ages for plates to be cleared and drinks and then pudding order to be taken). Also prices seemed much higher than our visit a year prior. £20 for a vegetarian tagliatelli seems expensive. Kids menu was great value by comparison! Also 'service charge' a bit baffling - something like £11 on a £300 bill? Left feeling a bit disappointed.

We visited for afternoon tea, having heard how fantastic they were here, yet left underwhelmed and highly disappointed. With other guests on the table alongside us being difficult we felt ignored and unable to raise our own concerns; such as very little ham presented on a ham finger sandwich, or quite overbaked scones. To add to this, I was under the impression that The Devonshire Arms held high standards with presentation and flavour with any food produced and showed attentiveness to any and all guests, but this was certainly not the case on my first and last visit to this establishment.

Our visit for Sunday Lunch on New Years Day was truly memorable. The star of the show was the Roast Beef with a fine Yorkshire Pudding, and a grear array of vegatables (very good roast potatoes, cauliflower cheese, green beans, red cabbage and roast carrots/partsnips. Our appetisers and dessert were also first class. All was was served by happy and attentive staff. Not cheap but then you would not expect it to be, for me worth every penny. PS - good range of non alcoholic drinks too.

Myself and three friends visited the Devonshire Arms to have afternoon tea together as a pre Christmas treat . How disappointed we were! We were shown to where we were to eat-2 comfy settees and chairs around a small table - which looked very comfortable and cosy, and ten we were asked which drinks we wanted and the order was taken. After that we received the tea long before our food which was very underwhelming !The sandwiches were very cold as if they had been sat in the fridge all morning and we had to send some of the sandwiches back as they were dry and hard- the replacements weren’t much better but no one seemed to be concerned! The rest of the food was only OK and the service was quite invisible- we had to ask for some more tea which came in pots that were too hot to hold and pour! We did tell the waiter when we paid the bill and he did say he would tell someone but we had the feeling that they feel their reputation will carry them along! The Devonshire Arms are set in beautiful countryside with amazing views and the furnishings and decorations are very good but the afternoon tea experience won’t be repeated- - very expensive and disappointing .

Enjoyed a Sunday Lunch at The Brasserie at The Devonshire Arms Hotel & Spa recently, after a picturesque walk at Bolton Abbey. We ate as a party of ten, with six adults and four children, all under ten, as well as two dogs. The food was extremely good, decent menu, plenty of choice for old and young. One of our party was Vegetarian and to be super-critical, there could have been an additional option to accommodate vegetarians. The service throughout was friendly and proficient and there was a warm glow from the internal, wood burning stove. I enjoyed the Duck, others had Sunday Roasts, alongside a burger, chicken and fish and chips. Given the location, it is nice that ‘well behaved’ dogs are welcome in the bar area of The Brasserie. We made the venue aware at the time of booking that we would have two dogs, and I believe that two dogs per table is the maximum - you do need to let them know, at the time you make your reservation. We will certainly be back and would recommend The Brasserie at The Devonshire.

My bf and I visited Bolton Abbey after a storm, making the trip around the area much, much longer when part of the paths were under the river. We had to climb through the muddy forest in the rain and when we finally found our way out it was pitch dark and no running buses and no Ubers would accept the drive from there to ilkley. We happened upon the Devonshire arms brasserie and thank God we did! The manager was an absolute life saver. He helped to call us a taxi and got us a table near the fire to warm up. The atmosphere inside was great and I'm really sorry we didn't manage to stay for dinner at a later day cause the restaurant smelled amazing.

I’d been so looking forward to afternoon tea here to celebrate my special birthday with partner and daughter. Well it should have been lunch but my partner was bamboozled with their opening times. But I love afternoon tea so all was good. He emailed to see if there was anything they could help him with to make it more special. He didn’t receive any reply, but we did have a couple of extra slices of cake with numbers piped on. Which was nice of them but shame they ignored his email. Booking made for 2pm but we were asked to be there for 130pm. Got there on time and had a bit of a wait for someone to come get us. A lovely chap greeted us and we were served by him and a lovely lady (who rectified a missing egg sandwich!). The food was beautifully presented and tasty. As was the glass of fizz. And sadly that’s where the positives end. I suspect the original servers went home and didn’t hand over and the service was dreadful from then on. No one came to check on us, we were left surrounded by mucky plates for ages. Had to get up and hunt someone down to get teas and coffees as we were told these get ordered after we’ve eaten. Which was fine as we had the fizz. But shocking to be left for so long. A lovely young lady took our order, but I’d have thought the hotel would have supplied ironed aprons. Not a five star experience but at £50 a head it’s not cheap. Hot milk served with tea so had to get up and hunt someone down again! Still surrounded by mucky plates not cleared up. So had to ask. Why when dropping off the tea this wasn’t done. Someone came and kindly boxed up what we hadn’t eaten tho but still no clearing table. Had to get up AGAIN and hunt someone for the bill. I said to the lady in the crumpled apron how bad the service had been. She went and spoke to the manager and came back with the bill. Said the manager had knocked off the service charge. No sign of the manager. Didn’t bother to come and speak to us to explain - which would have been better than money off. It wasn’t about the money. Then told we couldn’t pay there we’d have to go to the cocktail bar. Traipsed in there to find no one behind the bar, so another wait about. I had to get out as I was so annoyed by this point and headed to reception to get our coats. As no one had offered to get o ur coats. Thankfully the man on reception was lovely. The staff we did see were all lovely too but the service was an utter shambles and didn’t match the beautiful food. We were so ignored that it was 430pm by the time we left. 3 hours for afternoon tea! I don’t like to be rushed but come on that’s ridiculous especially when I had to keep getting up to ask for things that should have been standard. A very disappointing end to my special birthday day.

Wine list is a tad expensive, but I guess you get what you pay for, it was a really lovely red and we will have it again. Would thoroughly recommend the Brasserie. We decided to call in for lunch on the spur of the moment having enjoyed several meals here in the past. We were surprised by how quiet it was as it always used to be bustling, the reason soon became apparent. My main course was...

We recently visited as a family of 10 for what I hope will become an annual boxing outing. We were welcomed by the friendly manager Colin who allowed us to warm ourselves by the fire before showing us to our spacious table in the dining...

So disappointing. We went for a family meal for a birthday celebration. The food tasted great, the beef was delicious, exactly how you expect a £27 Sunday meal to taste. However the food was not hot, nor warm. The Yorkshire and veg were stone cold....

Staying at the Devonshire Arms, we had spent the day exploring the breathtaking majesty of the Yorkshire Dales. This had included a long lunch. The previous evening we had eaten at the DA's Burlington Restaurant; this time we needed something more low-key, and management was...

The beautiful location of Bolton Abbey was a perfect backdrop for the birthday lunch for my mum. The team made the lunch very special from changing the allocated table to one that would be more suitable for my elderly parents to organising a decorated plate...

Not for the first time, in my bank holiday week in the Yorkshire Dales, I come away from an eating establishment feeling that I had been fleeced - maybe it’s all the sheep hereabouts? When I’m being charged £4 for bread and butter, I don’t...

The food was very nice and service was good, but the quantity and price of the meals was disappointing. For example, when paying £22 for a chicken breast main course I expected larger vegetable accompaniments than a small leek, a broccoli purée and one fondant potato. I also feel that paying the full adult price of £9 for sticky toffee pudding (again, very tasty) which was exactly the same size as a child portion at £3 was a rip off. Completely understand that costs have gone up, but a few more vegetables that didn't have to be purchased as a side would have made me, my family and friends feel less out of pocket. Disappointed.
