2nd visit, 1st time staying over..suite was lovely, standalone bath a massive luxury. If it were my place, I'd possibly dispense with the robot style toilet as its a bit erratic and noisy if you need to go in the middle of the night! Food is incredible, service is incredible. It oozes cool understated luxury. We will definately be back

Visited for the evening on 10th Aug to celebrate best mate’s 40th. Greeted by a warm arrival, and shown to our table by the window. Lots of space, unlike lots of restaurants, where a table for two turns into a game of Jenga trying to balance the dishes/glasses! Also plenty of room between dining guests, so conversations are not overheard. I’ve no doubt the Angel could squeeze in a couple more covers, but it’s evident that their priority is not just quality food, but a focus on the dining atmosphere overall. This makes the Angel a standout from other brilliant restaurants. Staff are exceptional, knowledgeable about the food and socially skilled. That perfect balance of ‘chat’ and ‘professionally skilled’ at what they do. I’d added on the online booking about dietary needs, and my friend’s 40th as the reason for visiting. Arrived to a card on the table for my friend (lovely touch) and was handed a pescatarian menu without any query or hesitation! Impressive stuff to start with. Ok, the main event! The food….. I’ve eaten in Michelin starred restaurants before, so I was trying not to set ridiculously high expectations, but I couldn’t help it! However, I was without doubt blown away - we both were. The skill and craftsmanship behind this culinary explosion was undeniable. This wasn’t just a brilliant meal, it was a creative, artistic and totally immersive food experience! And it tasted absolutely fantastic! Thank you for such a memorable evening. Kind Regards

One of the best underrated Michelins in the uk . It honestly baffles me how they only have one star they should easily have two stars by now. This is one of my favourite Michelins to go to it’s consistently good it’s so good I went back twice in the space of a month the menu had changed so I had to try the new menu and it was just as good. Every time you go it’s just as good the staff 10/10 friendly and welcoming, the food the flavour of every dish leaves you wanting more. It is one of the best Michelins in the uk. And I can’t wait to be back again

Some of the best food ever. Really top notch even for a Michelin star restaurant. The variety of textures and flavours were mind blowing. The service was pleasant and not over attentive. A young lady called Rebecca was charming and so helpful. Not too keen on the decor and the area around the bar is very stark with long tables. Best to go straight to the dining room. Beware the price of wine. I ordered a glass of dry houes rosé, when the bill came it was £22.50. Look at the wine list and order specifically what you want

There are not many benefits to getting old but going at lunchtime for the Taste of the Season menu on a Monday at the Angel is certainly one! A brilliantly crafted tasting menu with each dish wonderfully presented and just so full of so many different flavours. Absolutely faultless in every way. Staff really knowledgeable with just the right degree of friendliness and efficiency. I also love that they serve draught ale and lager at normal pub prices which for a Michelin star restaurant is credible. No rip off wine prices either. Really amazing value for such quality. All in all a great experience again. Never fails to give 5 star enjoyment!

Completely lived up to the hype - the food that we had in our tasting menu was just amazing. Presentation-wise, you really couldn't fault it, so refined and picture perfect. And it tasted great! Unsurprisingly the best course, in my humble opinion, was the eel course - I love it when I am taken out of my comfort zone at a top restaurant and I knew it would deliver - it really was divine. And the chocolate course was next, but really every course was served to perfection. I had the wine pairing and this was served by a lovely and knowledgeable sommelier, with a couple of stand out ones including the dessert wines and an interesting sparking pear wine. The service was professional and friendly, these guys really know what they are doing. We also stayed and the rooms are modern and spotlessly clean. You'll notice a beautiful smell as you walk in and this is designed by the chef too, comfort and luxury on the nose. All in all this was a perfect night away, the type you only have on a rare occasion. You won't be disappointed.

We stayed for 2 nights at the Angel to celebrate a big birthday and for both of us it was a wonderful experience from start to finish. We were had a suite with a delightful little terrace at the front and since we were blessed with warm, sunny weather that’s where we spent the time we were in the hotel. It was so quiet and peaceful with lovely views. The bar was lovely and I had one of their signature G&Ts which was a great start to the evening. Our first meal was the 8 course tasting menu. From canapes to dessert each course was a beautifully presented work of art and delicious. My favourite was the eel, which prior to the meal was my most dreaded. We opted for the wine pairing and unlike other places included generous measures of each one. Even though the sommelier described each one, we were given a little note to read which was a great idea and meant we could take them away to remember what we had. The breakfast was lovely, I don’t eat meat so had a mushroom dish with spinach and it was fantastic, really flavourful and substantial. The second night we had the garden menu, again everything was delicious and beautiful. The staff at the Angel are brilliant, friendly without being overbearing, knowledgeable without making you feel like an idiot and nothing is too much trouble. They made our experience feel special, but just the right level of informality. It’s worth mentioning that service is not automatically added to your bill, so if you want to tip the lovely people that make your stay so special, you need to add it on.

We went for the Sunday Lunch. The main course and petit fours were amazing but the snacks were only ok and the carrot starter and dessert were too much technique and little taste. The restaurant wasn’t full but we were put in a through room on our own (at least we weren’t the Americans sat in the room on their own on the way to the toilets). The main course really was delicious & generous (cauliflower rarebit and boulangere potatoes were incredible). But it felt a bit too much like being in a business striving for 2 stars rather somewhere that was focused on whether the customers were having the best time (that being said one waiter, a Scottish guy, was a particular gem)!

Wow! We visted with a group of 10 people with all sorts of dietary requirements and restrictions. Eveyone was blown away, I consider myself somewhat of a foodie and this was hands down the best culinary experience I’ve had to date. We enjoyed the tasting menu and every course was beautifully manicured full of flavour and colour. Every dish was so delicately balanced and you could feel the flow from one taster to another. The decor and ambiance was soft and elegant even with the beautifully polished floor countered by the warm soft artistic constructed wooden feature walls. Having lived in Skipton the majority of my 20's and 30's I have always heard about The Angel, long before its current ownership. When speaking to people from the local area you get a wide array of reviews. However, I think that some reviews are based on cheap locals who wanted a local pub with local food, always mentioning a notorious 'moneybags' dish, (which I believe was something to do with Denis Watkins) to be offered and haven't actually ever dined at the current restaurant at all. Do people forget that the local pub, serving local food, is no longer a viable business? especially in the middle of nowhere?! it'd have been houses by now if not for this Michelin restaurant. We stayed here for two nights so that we could escape our tech world and take bobby the dog on extended walks over the weekend. We built up quite an appetite over the course of our trekking around Rylstone and Cracoe, and it's fair to say the food was exquisite. Everything and more that you'd expect. The tasting menu is made to offer glimpses of the local area integrated with a Japanese style. The show was stolen for us by the bergamot dessert to finish! wow. The wine flight, and service was top notch. A lot is asked of these guys day in day out, and people forget just how important it is that service like this exists in this country. Breakfast is fantastic, so different to anywhere else you go to visit. I would suggest, you just allow the restaurant to do what it does and experience a breakfast different to what you will have anywhere else. (Also, if like us you take your four legged friend, they are not forgotten at breakfast either!! Bobby loved his sausage! Thanks team!) I'd recommend not being a fussy eater, here - or to be fair at any Michelin restaurant, and just experience what Chef and his team are creating. All in all, a fantastic stay for all three of us, and a nice local get away. Not cheap, but what Michelin restaurant is??

A game of two halves. Firstly, the food was sensational and we agree with others that this is heading into 2 star territory. Anyone who doesn’t understand good food will obviously not go again. Dinner a week ago started off with an amazing selection of amouses bouches with stunning flavours, followed by langoustines cooked and flavoured perfectly. (This was from the à la carte menu.) Next a complimentary course of celeriac from the tasting menu. We then had venison and squab (pigeon breast) both of which were exceptional. The rhubarb dessert for one was immaculate and the cheese selection was also up there! Fresh mint tea to finish. What more could one ask for. But, but, but….. However the restaurant service did not match before dinner. We arrived across the windy and wet road from our room (over the courtyard) for a pre dinner drink at 7.30pm for a reservation at 8pm. On arrival they checked we had a booking and were invited to sit down opposite the bar. We then waited, and waited and waited for anyone to offer us a drink. Eventually after a good fifteen minutes we had to ask again for some attention and were still ignored. There seemed to be an obsession with the computer screen on the bar and no acknowledgment of the client-i.e us, the customers! When we finally came to order and looked at the drinks menu we noted that a single glass of Ruinart champagne (no other champagne option) was a staggering £26 per glass which has to be one of the most expensive glasses of champagne in the UK. And certainly in Yorkshire I imagine! With our order for the food yet to be taken it seemed to be entirely possible that one glass would not do the trick! (4 x glasses would cost £104). It was logical therefore to order a half bottle at £70! A positive bargain! After being shown to our table with champagne still in the bottle and as the canapés were being delivered, a waitress topped up our glasses and announced that we were “dangerously close to running out “. (Perhaps she thought she was being funny). We weren’t impressed as we had half a bottle of Chablis in a cooler already on the table. We had also ordered a bottle of red wine which had been delivered by a knowledgeable sommelier who was charming. At the time he brought the wine he also placed four glasses on the table, one suitable for white and one for red. Shortly afterwards whilst having been asked if everything was alright, the “manageress” who had previously ignored us, whisked the two “red” wine glasses away, putting her fingers inside the rims while doing so. A total negative, surely? She then proceeded to replace these with the same glasses as the white ones. To say that the sommelier, who was diplomatic when he had clearly been undermined, was an obviously unacceptable situation and unfortunate. Apparently the “problem “ was that the slightly larger red wine glasses were for those drinking Burgundy! I know that no one wants staff to be grovelling and obsequious in this day and age but I’m not sure that being asked by a member of staff whether you’ve had a stressful day is the best way to create a rapport with your clients. What an extraordinary question and one which could be extremely invasive and embarrassing depending on the circumstances. We were staying in a room across from the main building up a steep narrow staircase with no bannister or means of holding on. Although we fully understand that there is a Skandi ethic to the decor there is minimalism and simply not very comfortable. There was a small two seater sofa with no other seating; no cushions, no rug to soften the polished concrete floor and two steps up to the bedroom area. And a tv on the wall. The bathroom was on the same level as the seating area and so if one needed to use the bathroom at night you had to negotiate the steps without any grab handle. We were also surprised that the bottles in the shower recess were of glass which would be really hazardous if dropped. The question is, would we return? For the food, absolutely. But for the accommodation, unless the rooms are made more comfortable, probably not. It’s telling that apparently there were only two other rooms occupied when we were there, despite the restaurant being pretty full. Maybe our room hadn’t been finished off?It wouldn’t take much to create the “ hygge “ atmosphere.

Visited at the weekend and had a good but not amazing experience. The restaurant is lovely inside. Nice and spacious and well presented. The staff were attentive and pleasant throughout. The food on the whole was good but some of the courses missed the mark. Little bits of the service such as adding extra sauce and garnish weren’t great and lacked refinement. A few times they were actually quite clumsy and it didn’t help the experience. We did wait a long time, around 30mins in between 2 courses which seemed too long and then again another wait of around 20mins before deserts were served. It was a nice evening but could have been better.

Worst booking experience ever. I wanted to book 4 rooms for two nights 28th/29th June . When booking I was told we had to have the £165 tasting menu and could not choose A la carte (£110). I said we wanted a la carte but this was refused because the kitchen could not cope with orders for 8 for a la carte. I asked again and was told the restaurant manager would ring me to see if they could make an exception. An hour later the receptionist called back and said yes they could do a la carte but the only time a table was available was at 6.30pm. This was a booking 5 months in advance. So it is clear that the Angel only operates for the benefit of its kitchen convenience and the more you want to spend the more inflexible is the attitude shown to paying customers. I emailed the owner but received no reply. If he responds to this review please don't give me a vacuous apology.

My husband and I are foodies. We travelled around the world for the best dishes. And Angel in Hetton is still my favourite after all these years. We keep coming back at least once a year since it opened. In fact, we've been to chef Wignall's restaurants ever since he was in pennyhill park when we lived in London. The food never disappoints. The attention to details is not only just about food, but also the interior design of the hotel. Love the modern and minimalistic, Scandinavian or Japanese decor. Definitely lots of Japanese influence there (and yes, the Hokkaido bread) Japanese toilets are a big plus. Value is actually really good for the quality of food and room. Definitely worth a treat. Coming from London it would easily be twice of the amount per head.

We were fortunate to get a room and dining experience at the Angel at Hetton for New Years Eve. The accommodation was first rate, with no expense spared on the furnishings, their fit and facilities. We stayed in the main restaurant building, which was ideal, giving us easy access for our evening meal which was the tasting menu. As we had been to the restaurant before, we were aware of the service standards and quality of the food and dining experience, all of which are not deteriorating over time, in fact they are improving. The staff were familiar faces from our previous visits, giving confidence to the guests dining that the staff were spot on with their work and communication. No disappointments here, nothing is too much trouble for the staff. The food is exquisite, with taste sensations coming to you on each course, amazing food and you can understand why Michael and team have a Michelin star, although why it's not 2 stars is a conundrum. At the end of the evening service, having retired to the bar for the customary NYE celebrations, to see Michael and his team all gather round at midnight was a testimony to their team spirit, it was lovely to see. Having had a great nights sleep, the breakfast tasting menu didn't disappoint either, with the service and food top notch. Overall, not disappointed and pleased that even though we didn't think it possible, Michael and team are continuing to improve and innovate, well done!
