Our daughter booked bed and breakfast at the Game Bird in Beverley for a Christmas pleasant for us. But on arrival this afternoon we found that it had closed down, she has had no contact from the brewery about this. We are extremely disappointed with them as the room was booked and payed for in full on line. I hope that Batemans will refund her money.

Well very disappointed. We have had our mum's surprise party booked here since April (When the venue was under old management). Since then it has been taken over and since that time it's been nothing but down hill. When booking we were told a cost in total of £400 And that was for free hire of the venue, our buffet and a DJ however on the night there was no DJ and instead just music played from a laptop behind the bar. The food was also bare minimal and not £400 worth tho I must add it was nice. At the end of the evening I asked to have the remaining food to be told by a rude member of staff that they only have 10 containers and what wouldn't fit in them containers would be binned! I also had a family member staying the night and the room was supposed to be £50 but she was charged more on the night. I was told I could bring all the decorations and cake etc down earlier on the day and when I went down all the doors were locked and they didn't answer the phone despite telling us they were there! I had to go back home and come back again an hour later, when my partner eventually got hold of them the owner was cocky and said well you should have rung the bell however we weren't told there was a bell to ring when all this was being discussed. I was very unhappy with the night and after months of planning it was a big let down so I had to message the owner to discuss this matter however I was met with a very cocky reply and an arrogant attitude which I expected from her mannism. She basicly told me that she lost out on the evening as she had to pay her chef £81 for the food prepping and her staff and said she should really ask more well I always thought when you pay for a buffet it was all included on the price they set I didn't realise I had to pay HER staff their wages as well!! When I also said about her attitude she told me she was amused by it. Defiantly won't be back and alot of people have asked me my opinion on the venue as they were looking to book their function however not they wont! I won't even go there to eat a meal as I can't believe how arrogant this "owner" is. Pity that the old management have gone as when we were dealing with them there were no issues. Shame it came to this really as the food was delicious and the place is nicely decorated etc however for her attitude and rude response which I will post below I will defiantly not recommend for a private function or be back.

The food at this pub is REALLY excellent. The menu has a great choice and the drinks are priced really reasonably. The chefs special double chicken burger is AMAZING ! The pies are also to be recommended. Everything is home made and the chips and onion rings are to die for :-)We had a 9 month old infant with us and they were great with him, bringing us baby sized portions of whatever we wanted. The current chef is leaving. I've got all my toes and fingers crossed that they replace him with one just as talented and consistent.

We love character hotels but this one has lost the message somehow, it may be the colour of the walls, it's a bit drab. We also talked to locals when we stopped for a beer at the monks walk who said they went there to have a meal but left as the atmosphere was lacking. The bathroom shower floor ( in the room we stayed in) had soap scum buildup that resonated a foot up the walls and mouldy grout. It's needs a good steam clean or scrub with powdered Ajax and a stiff brush. The shower drain was blocked and came up onto our feet. Disgusting, we had to wash our feet in the basin. This was fixed as soon as I mentioned it next morning. The staff were excellent. It's overpriced and under serviced. It's also quite a walk to the high street so you need to like walking. The meals are expensive but the steak I had was really good. The worst part was the bed, it's not a king size and was totally worn out so don't expect comfort. The noise from the bar underneath can also be heard. The toiletries supplied are scant and there is no hair conditioner. The wifi is so incredibly slow it drops out constantly, trying to send video was a no go, we gave up and used our own. Not our favourite stay in England, I usually love everywhere I stay but this wasn't nice.

This was strange in respect of there was a lot of bad things but we all enjoyed the experience because of the food and the staff rescuing things. Let's get the bad out of the way. Long wait for drinks for some at the beginning. White wine not in fridge, so it was warm. Ordered white wine for table, after it was put in fridge-mot that cold wjen brough in cooler, so we had to ask for ice in the cooler to try and chill some more. After that, drinks were prompt and fine. Also the starter of black pudding, pancetta and egg for three of us came minus pancetta, which we mentioned-the waitress said the chef was a man & what do you expect, which was a great response-made us laugh and we forgot about it. Every time there was a problem, the staff rescued it. It could be argued there should not have been a problem in the first place however it's how it is dealt with and the staff were spot on. So far, however you would think the review would be 2/3 stars BUT the food was excellent and increased the score to 4. Overall, everyone said it was a great night with great food, so, on balance visit this restaurant-I hope you will agree that the food was great-done by men!!!

Rooms are Grade A in all respects, quality furnishings including carpets, wifi and TV all work as they should. exceptionally clean, hot water at all times, soaps and drinks topped up with quality products. Faultless breakfast, good choice, cooked fresh, quality produce. Excellent weekday stay. Only downside is preference is given to private parties which they advertise for, when a party is booked, the restaurant is closed to guests. This is disappointing as the food served in the restaurant is as good as you will get anywhere. There are plenty of places to eat in the town, a reasonable walk away. The place doubles as a pub for locals so take the bar as you find it. The staff are very helpful and friendly and do the best they are able. We will go back but only for weeknights.

4 of us have just eaten at The Game Bird for lunch and it was an excellent meal for all of us.We paid £49 for 4 main courses and 2 rounds of drinks which we thought was very good value. The bar server was lovely in her manner and really helped to make it a very pleasant experience.2 of us had the steak & ale pie. One with mash and one with homemade chips - both served with a fresh selection of seasonal vegetables. It's a pie with no bottom, just a top crust and was delicious. The third diner had the chefs chicken burger which was made with 2 x quality chicken breasts. He said it was very nice hut it beat him - too much food for him to finish. Lol.The last person had liver and bacon on top of mash and gravy with homemade onion rings stacked on top as a garnish. The presentation of all the meals was excellent. The desserts were only £3.95 and there was a good selection including my favourite 'red velvet cake' but we were all too full for one.We will definitely go back here again.

This pub/hotel came up on a Google search and so I thought why not give it a whirl. Very competitive price. It is smaller than it looks with pub area to the front and restaurant area to the side/rear. Excellent warm welcome from the staff. Very hospitable. Good vibe. Décor in the pub and restaurant struck me as a bit bare looking - a bit cold - functional feel. Especially in the restaurant area. Needs a touch of fabrics and colour to make the distinction from the bar. I'd make it more cosy and somewhere to linger over a meal rather than sense of a quick bar meal and out. Although maybe that's what the management want i.e. a quick turnover. Upstairs just five bedrooms but somebody does have an eye for the comfort factor and have spent a some money on creating very comfortable rooms typical of an upmarket boutique hotel. Cool shade of grey on the walls, nice window blinds the sort that Laura Ashley charge a fortune for. All furniture solid oak rather than veneer. Large oak bed, table and wardrobe and beside tables. Good sized flat screen TV. Bathroom fully tiled in expensive looking tiles and nice trendy washbasin mounted on an oak table plus large walk in shower with very good pressure. All high quality feel. Whoever designed the bedrooms needs to be let loose downstairs. The restaurant was closed for food so unfortunately couldn't sample the food service or choices. That brings me to the key downside! I had to go and find a restaurant and it is a bit of a leg stretch. Probably a good half mile to get to shopping centre which offered only two restaurants one those a burger place. Then if you want more choice a further third to half a mile into the town centre. The town centre is beautiful with a wide range of places to eat. So if you don't mind walking then this is a good cost effective place to stay with very comfy bedrooms. Bear in mind a pub so can be noisy up to 11p.m. It didn't bother me or interfere with watching the T.V

We had dinner here during the week because we were told it had an exceptional chef... must have been his/her day off!! Food was average at best but the off thing was that the place is just a bit weird in it's layout. Feels like it needs a bit of a re-build. Our table was pushed up against the bar. Felt like we were intruding on the bar space. Our waitress served us from behind the bar whilst we were sitting down. I stood up to collect our drinks. Now this may not sound strange, and I'm happy to get my own drinks but this is a restaurant area and it felt really awkward. We skipped dessert....

Dusty around side of the room and the bathroom, but have seen worse. Unbelievable amount of noise from pub downstairs during the afternoon, and until 11pm in the evening: the floor shook as the keyboard played! Was my mums birthday so the family decided to book a meal out. We had pre booked our table, there was 9 of us, and we had been sent a menu with starters and mains, with prices included and we had to select what we wanted a few days before we was due to go. We all arrived and our table was ready for us, we all sat down, the service was as normal, what you would expect for a local pub. When our meals arrived, my step mum had ordered a Vegetable Lasagne, as it was called on the menu, which you would expect to contain different vegetables. At first the waitress shouted Beef Lasagne, which then my step mum commented it should be Vegetable Lasagne, the waitress then said Oh it will be quorn then! (No-where on the menu did it say the lasagne contained quorn). No fuss was caused and we all began eating. After a few of us trying my step mums meal, and to eat the fat and grizzle from the 'quorn' we had established it was Beef Lasagne, but as all the other meals were nice we decided not to comment and to not cause a fuss. When home the next day, we seemed to glance at the receipt and realised that we had been charged around £26 per steak, when they was advertised at £12 on the menu, me and my mum both had a steak so we had been charged £50 odd for 2 steaks, hm? We decided to take the receipt into the Game Bird, where the young woman there was very apologetic and explained that they had new tills installed and all the prices were wrong, and the waitress obviously hadn't checked the receipt, genuine mistake! They refunded us no problem, took a photocopy of our receipt and off we went. To then be phoned by The Game Bird 20 minutes later, stating that the waitress claimed that we had already brought to her attention the overcharge on the night of the meal and she had reprinted a new receipt for us and we had paid the correct price, basically accusing us of stealing the refund. My step mum was the one to pay at the bar, she is pregnant and was 100% Sober, so they can't use the excuse that she was drunk and doesn't remember!I would just like to comment on how unprofessional this business runs. In what right mind would you ring up a customer to ask if they've conned the pub out of a refund we wasn't entitled to, how damn rude! One of our meals was wrong resulting in my step mum not eating her main meal in which we paid for, no alternative was offered and no acknowledgement to the fact my step mums plate was still completely full with a couple of bites taken out of the lasagne. And then we are accused of robbing them out of a refund. I think you may need to follow up your transactions from the night before, carrying out a till check before you can come to any sort of conclusion and never should you ring the customer accusing us of such things. Game Bird you best be checking where your moneys going because clearly that waitress was lying, and we don't appreciate to be made out to be thieves. We had also left a big tip between us, which we regret leaving now, why would we steal a refund when leaving a tip?!In result of this situation, we shall not be returning to The Game Bird, which is disappointing as it is only round the corner and we enjoyed the place and atmosphere for a few chilled drinks. But is a few drinks worth being accused of stealing??

We visited for a birthday - 9 guests and pre-ordered meals in advance. (Prices were listed on the menu we got in advance) . Meals all ok apart from the Vegetable lasagne which arrived with mince (tasted like beef to me but they promised it was quorn...) couldn't eat it and wasn't offered alternative but didn't make a fuss and figured the other 8 were ok so no big deal. Paid bill left a good tip and thought no more of it. Next day I noticed they had charged £26+ for each of the 2 steak meals instead of £12+. Popped in and they apologised and refunded the money, ... all forgiven, will prob visit again as it's our local pub (maybe not for food but still left happy). Then 20 mins or so later got a call from the pub with a strange story of how I'd brought it to the attention on the waitress last night and she had deducted the extra from the bill before I paid! So I'd come and taken a second refund today! Effectively stealing the refund. This is completely untrue. I'm pregnant so was 100% sober... recall getting the bill and walking to the bar and paying it part card part cash.. and had the receipt to prove it. I didn't even check the bill until the next day so can be sure that story is not true. I wish they had checked last nights takings before calling and accusing me of lying... either she is thinking of another table or someone needs to check where the extra cash went...along with the large tip!!!

We had a warm welcome by Jess and shown to our room. We had a few minor complaints, for some reason the cold water was warm until it was run for several minutes, as the weather was very warm this was not convenient when getting up for a drink in the night. The extractor fan was quite noisy outside our room and there was no bath mat provided. We would have mentioned these things in the morning but the only member of staff there was the chef and it was hardly his fault. It could however have been the chef's fault that the hash browns and black pudding didn't taste of much, having said that a chef is only as good as the ingredients he is given to work with. Last time we visited there was a continental breakfast option which was delicious but this time a continental breakfast was only available if ordered the night before.

They are spacious and comfortable with great amenities. If you stay on a Sunday night the rooms are discounted because all the locals gather downstairs for a karaoke evening. Watching and listening to them is great fun. Note: because of the Sunday event, the restaurant closes early as do many in the area. Plan for this.

It's been 2 years since we last ate at the game bird. We were not too impressed the last time. We found this time round generally things have improved a tad. We were the only couple eating until a party of 4 came in. The service was good without any issues. Our main course came in reasonable time and was piping hot. We both had the cottage pie. Tasty but both thought on the sloppy side, gravy was very thin and had the consistency of greyish water. The desserts were fine, but nothing special. Coffee was nice big cups and hot. Couple of gripes, not sure why but the table although clean was sticky, I picked up my napkin and it tore as it had stuck to the table! Really disliked the wooden seating as it's uncomfortable slippery and hard, seat pads would rectify this easily. Would love to give this local establishment more stars, perhaps next time?

We had a 1 night stay here on a Sunday as part of our Northern road trip holiday. The pub and hotel is run by Bateman’s brewery from Skegness in Lincolnshire. It’s a short walk / drive from the centre of town in a residential area. The interior really surprised me as I kind of didn’t think it would be as nice internally as it actually is, there’s a front bar with 3 Bateman’s ales on as well as the usual lagers, ciders and Guinness. The large back dining room had a couple of families in having lunch. Later in the evening it was home to around 30 WI ladies enjoying the easy listening live music that was on offer. Now onto the rooms, well surprised about the quality and size doesn’t do my reaction enough justice, a large double bed, wardrobe, chest of drawers, bedside tables, dressing table and a large red leather chesterfield, even then there was still space in the room, then there’s the long quality bathroom complete with wet room shower. We were the only guests staying here on the Sunday night so we had the run of the place and could get breakfast when we wanted, a choice of full English, cereal, omelettes, egg and sausage sandwiches etc., with plenty of fresh tea and coffee.I'd recommend this pub & hotel to anyone, worth the money (booked via booking.com), lovely rooms, good staff, nice pub and not far from the centre of town.A great one nights stay.

Ok, so this establishment has had a tricky time since launch. The interior has been done really well, and the first restaurant menu tried really hard to be "The Gamebird", with excellent home cooked food. Then it closed, re-opened, and then had the dreadful plastic coated menus for a while. Which was, basically, anything + chips, and, at that point we were set to give up on this Gamebird! There was nothing to distinguish it from the local chain pubs in the area, and we don't eat in any of those either. And then! Saw in the local paper that a new menu launched, back to basics, so we went along.....Great! Hope this latest version works for this place, and people give it a chance. Good food, lovely staff and what we need in this part of Beverley.

Stayed here for one night. It was easy to find & there was enough parking. The room was one of the standard rooms & was fine for a one night stay. Throughout our stay all of the staff were really nice. The furnishings & fittings of the room are tasteful & modern. There are hot drinks & biscuits in the room. The room was really hot though & my hubby had to get up in the night to put a fan on. We didn't sleep very well & the mattress could do with replacing. Some attention to detail is required in terms of cleaning; the bathroom in particular - the towel rail hasn't been cleaned recently & the shower needs a good scrub. I noticed a few other lapses in attention to detail in the room. The breakfast was ok. I wouldn't rule out stopping here again from one night if other accommodation was unavailable.

For an establishment named "The Game Bird" you would expect something with a little more class, however, this is not the case. It's a pub that does pub food. Nothing more, nothing less. If you want that...great! But it should probably still be called "Grovehill". The food is sub-standard pub-grub with much better on offer locally. The pub also seems to suffer from a personality complex, is it an eatery? or a boozy local? Is it a boutique hotel or someone to crash after a few largers?....Who knows?! There's generally someone lolling around outside having a fag, and generally been rather rowdy. The car park is a good feature yet is poorly signposted, taking people instead to the street next to the pub, where you have to then turn around. The hotel rooms (which I have been shown around, not actually stayed in) are done to a high standard and are in close proximity to the town centre and local attractions. For somewhere with such potential it lacks character, the ambience is none existent and instead screams pub on the corner.

Visited for the first time as a small family group. Before booking we looked at the website and were attracted by what appeared to be an interesting menu with a reasonable selection of children's meals. On sitting down we were given a completely different and less varied menu with no children's section. We were informed children could have a smaller version of any adult meal at a reduced price. We asked about the menu on the website and were told "this is the menu all the time now". The waitress didn't explain that a new menu had been introduced that day, or that there was a promotional 10% price reduction - we were only told this when the bill arrived. We checked the website later and, sure enough, if you scrolled down, there was mention of a new menu, but it was the old one that was featured. We would not have booked if we'd seen the new menu.As for the food, overall it was so-so. Steak was well-cooked and onion rings were excellent. The curry was tasty, but it was oily and the chunky chips (all four of them per meal) were tasteless. The worst feature was that my Eton mess included a long hair that I only found after it was in my mouth.Service was slow, with excessive waits, even allowing for the fact that mains were cooked to order. The contaminated dessert was not charged for and an apology was given. The place probably has potential but seems to need tighter management and greater attention to customer service.

Breakfast was also commendable ,one of the best experienced in any hotel in a longtime, with attentive staff, and amount of food to ruin the diet!Only slight drawback -is the distance to town centre, however a £5 taxi ride is the answer, if like me ,you are a lazy walker!!Would recommend this Pub/Hotel to any one- for a really pleasant stay.

We booked two rooms for a family do well in advance, and lucky we did as they were overbooked. I booked two rooms through hotels.com who had incorrect information on their listing. The Game Bird only has double rooms so don't be tempted to book a triple/sofa bed and double as listed on hotels.com. However, the staff at the Game Bird could not have been nicer about the error. They provided us with a zed bed for the king size room and we got the included breakfast for the third person also. I couldn't have asked more of the main waitress/server on our visit, she was so smiley and lovely despite the mix up. The rooms are very nicely done and the included breakfast superb in range and quality. But it is in a deceptively busy area and I was woken several times in the night by the traffic. Service was a little slow and we had to chase people for missing towels etc, hence the 4 instead of five, but it was close!

Don't Really know where to start..... Visited Beverley once again for a couple of nights over the weekend and decided to stay at the Game Bird just on the outskirts. It really is a lovely pub and has been done out to a very high standard especially the five letting rooms. Very nice menu in the lovely restaurant which we tried out on the Friday evening and really enjoyed, unfortunately we were the only ones in there, with not many more in the bar area, so not a lot of atmosphere. Saturday and Sunday morning breakfast could not be faulted. We knew the Game Bird was not in the town centre, but it's location on a built up estate type area really does let it down. If this style of pub was in a better location I am sure it would be a different story, and for that reason "only" I don't think we would stay again.

This pub/restaurant was a lovely surprise. We popped in quite late in the evening on a cold wet windy night for a quick bite to eat and found a lovely warm atmosphere with delicious food which we watched being prepared. This was definitely more upmarket from the usual chain pub-grub, although the style of the menu indicated it was a chain. It's the first Bateman's pub outside of Lincolnshire, so technically it is a chain, but new to East Yorkshire. As an extra surprise, we hit an evening when there was some live music!

We had had a mixture of experiences at the Game Bird, but as we like to support local businesses, we decided to give it another go. We ordered bread and olives as a starter and when it arrived the bread was almost black with mold. The waitress was very apologetic and said that the chef had not noticed. I find this very difficult to believe as it was very noticeable even in the dim lighting of the restaurant. Where the food is assembled is incredibly well lit and I watched the chef as he assembled the food on the plate. He could not have missed something so obvious. We were asked by the waitress if we wanted another starter and we declined. Our main meal arrived well over half an hour later. Considering there were only three couples in the restaurant, I find the wait unacceptable. My wife and I felt very sorry for the waitress to have been put in such an awful position. The chef should have come over to us to apologise rather than slamming the dishes of olives on the counter when the waitress took them back. We were given a complimentary bottle of wine, but they are doing that during January anyway. I have e-mailed, but so far have failed to get a response.

As Beverley town centre was so busy my partner and I wanted to go somewhere different and off peak to get some food. We sat down and a waitress came over pretty and took our order for drinks and food. Fifteen minutes later, no sign of any drinks and the restaurant was not busy. We asked another waitress to chase them up, and ten minutes later the original girl came back to tell us that they "haven't got any Pacesso" (I ordered Prosecco) and had a suggestion for an alternative but couldn't tell me what it actually was or what the measure of the bottle was, so I gave up and asked for something totally different. The other waitress asked us when we finally got our drinks if we wanted to order food, and we told we had ordered with the previous waitress... It then transpired (through overhearing) that she had not bothered to put the order of two meals in because it was too complicated (I asked for something slightly different to a dish on the menu). No communication of this to us personally whatsoever, we just had to watch them flap. After an hour and asking twice about the meals we had ordered as other tables that came in after us ate, and the manager had nothing at all to say, in fact he seemed to run into the back when we had expressed some displeasure. After an hour we had had enough, the waitress said there was a wait on food and hadn't anybody told us? No. We were waiting like starving idiots, looking around at everyone for a clue why it was so slow, as again, it wasn't busy. I worked in service for years - I know what a busy restaurant looks like and I think I'm pretty understanding, but this was frankly... Well, s***t.Being told it would be longer still, we decided to politely leave, without being fed. The waitress we spoke with said she would inform the manager, but if she did we saw nothing more of the guy. My partner was extremely (too) polite and paid for our drinks, with no more than a fleeting 'sorry about that' from the waitress.People say the food is good, I couldn't tell you because I couldn't wait that long for a simple pub lunch at 3pm on a Sunday. All I can say is it was actually cringeworthy watching the team struggle with the service and organisation of the place, particularly the manager who was clearly not up to much. To be fair, one of the waitresses (the second one) was obviously the only one working hard and trying to keep things running. I totally respect that there are bad days and bad tables sometimes and mistakes happen but there is no excuse for the complete lack of communication with customers and an obvious lack of care for their satisfaction. We won't bother trying again. Cheers!

The staff here are friendly, the breakfast was of an acceptable standard. At first appearance the room was attractive and very spacious (no hairdryer or shower cap though). We were situated at the front of the pub and the road outside was very noisy, plus there is a seating area under the bedroom window which means people are chatting and smoking right under your window which is unpleasant. The shower cubicle is huge, easily big enough for two, however, sadly the shower is not at all powerful and barely covers one of you, so joint showering is a no-no! The shower backed up and started to flood the bedroom during our stay. Unfortunately, the bed was very, very uncomfortable and this combined with all the noise meant my hubby and I probably only slept about 2-3 hours. When I talked to the manager about this she said the mattresses are only 6 months old (the implication being that they cannot be uncomfortable so I am a) mistaken or b) fibbing?) and as for the noise 'you should have requested a room at the back if you are light sleepers'. Neither my husband or I are particularly light sleepers and having never stayed here, how would we know to ask for a room at the back?? Sadly, nothing was done regarding our complaint and I would not return for these reasons.

The food is usually excellent but sadly Sunday lunch was a complete let down. The beef was nice but that’s all. The pork was dry, the lamb was inedible. Just a pile of fat and gristle that didn’t even look appealing. We waited until the waiter took our sharer board away, which was hardly touched, to mention our disappointment but he didn’t ask if we enjoyed our meal. Nobody asked while we were eating. As we paid, we were not asked if we enjoyed our lunch. It seems nobody cares at Tomahawk. It gives me no pleasure writing a negative review as the food is usually excellent but today was awful.

We were looking for some were different to have Sunday lunch. We certainly made the right choice. The staff were friendly and the surroundings were very welcoming. We ordered at the vegetable soup for starters, when it arrived it looked perfect and appetizing served with a bread roll and butter. On tasting the soup was nice and hot and completely full filling a perfect starter. The main course we ordered was a traditional roast with beef our choice of meat. Our main course arrived and looked delicious the presentation of the food on the plate looked perfect. Once again the food was hot and really satisfying in fact wonderful. We were eager to try a starter even though we were edging towards very full, never mind let's ' Push the Boat Out'. We ordered treacle sponge and custard. It arrived steaming hot with a generous jug of custard also very hot. On indulging on our desert it was lovely and we did not want it to end. All I can say is we believe we made the perfect choice, and would like to thank the staff at The Hase for making our Easter Sunday very enjoyable. It won't be long before we will be visiting again.
