Having told us when we arrived that they would start serving lunch in 10 mins, when we went to ask again half an hour later because we still hadn't been offered menus they told us that they wouldn't be able to serve us for another 2 and a half hours 'because they were full' despite the restaurant literally being empty. We made it clear when we arrived that we were looking for a place to eat and wouldn't have ordered drinks if we'd known we couldn't eat. We ordered 3 coffees and an orange juice. the coffees were absolutely tiny (about 3 mouthfuls) and cold, the americano tasted like dirty water. The orange juice must have been watered down because it too had no flavour. When we went inside to pay for the drinks I commented on the size and flavour and instead of listening to my concerns the barista got extremely defensive and passive aggressive. We were offered a 20p discount on a £10 bill for the size of the coffees but nothing more. Definitely will not be visiting again.

I came into the Galley for a solo breakfast on a Saturday morning. The waiter was absolutely delightful and chatted to me as I ate my porridge! There was a lovely atmosphere in the cafe, the manager came upstairs and spoke to guests and guests spoke to one another, a lovely, warm environment. On top of this the food was delicious! Would thoroughly recommend to all- a real gem on the beautiful Bristol harbourside.

After seeing the multiple five-star reviews on Trip Advisor, I was genuinely looking forward to enjoying some tea and cake to celebrate my Sister's birthday. However, within seconds of walking through the door we were made to feel unwelcome by one of the waiters. He seemed extremely reluctant to find us a table as we hadn't reserved and made us feel as thought we were a massive inconvenience to him. He then proceeded to take an extremely long time to get round to serving us, and when he did he felt it was appropriate to make a mockery of my Liverpool accent. I'm down for a joke, but him telling me to "speak properly", is downright rude. The food was admittedly very lovely, however I'm sure there are much nicer and much friendlier cafes in Bristol.

Came highly recommended by a friend and I have been looking for an excuse to visit The Galley since moving to Bristol earlier this year. However on visiting today, as a birthday treat, I was really disappointed. The service was slow, the waiter was rude and made us feel like we were an inconvenience and although the cakes were tasty, the portions were tiny and the coffee came in a cup not much bigger than a thimble. Overpriced and understaffed.

Waiter made us feel unwelcome and did seem to want to find us a table. He acted like he was doing us a huge favour just allowing us in. Then we had to wait ages for service on my friend's birthday. He corrected my friend's pronunciation of the word "muffin" which made us feel even more awkward and to be honest we couldn't see what all the fuss was about - much better cafes in Bristol with more polite staff.

Looks like it could be a diamond in the rough. Is pretty rough. Went for Sunday lunch - steps up to the place are filthy, many grubby cushions on the pews to sit on. A filthy carpet rag at your feet. The food was bad too. The fried bread appeared to have been fried quite a few times. The eggs were a pale, anaemic, tasteless and fried so hot they'd bubbled. No idea what was in the sausages. Won't be going back. Ever.

We had a selection of the sunday roasts and I would recommend any, the pot shoulder of beef was my choice and the meat was beautifully cooked and fell off the bone effortlessly. Actually visited twice in one weekend on the back of multiple recommendations from friends. First visit- breakfast. Both my girlfriend and I had the bubble and squeak/poached egg combo - what a great breakfast menu idea The food arrived quickly, but was clearly freshly prepared. Service was fine, the waitress seemed a little uneasy (perhaps she was new), but she was pleasant enough.Second visit- Sunday lunch. Perhaps I'm distorted by having lived in London for many years but i think £10.50 for a beef roast with all the trimmings (and excellent quality trimmings at that) is an excellent price. When the food arrived it looked absolutely fantastic, and the taste that followed did not disappoint. Special mention to the broccoli&cauliflower cheese dish - delightful! We ate outside overlooking the river on a lovely sunny Sunday. Would (and will) definitely return.

Tried this place out fo Sunday roast, didn't wipe our table after someone left crumbs all over it, was freezing inside, ordered the beef, was un cuttable, sent it back for different type of beef, again couldn't cut through it. Literally inedible. Real shame as veg and potatoes was good, but if you can't cut something you can't chew it. Never seen meat like it. And to make worse when we paid they saw meat was untouched again and charged us £28 for the privilege. Not even the decency to offer discount, £28 for couple of potatoes and veg. Knew this cafe/bistro existed but had never been in here before and just called in on the off-chance yesterday (Sunday) lunchtime. A table was found for us and nothing was too much trouble. Bit of am understandable mix-up over a decaf tea order but that was rectified immediately. They were clearly set up for Sunday lunches (and more of this in a minute) but we just wanted a sarnie and they were more than happy to oblige. Great bacon and superb sausage sandwiches in Herbert's (I think) overnight baguettes with a small green salad with balsamic glaze on the side. Superb. Bistro menu looks great and I'll be going back in the not too distant future to give that a go and I'm sure it will be of the same quality. Now, the Sunday lunches that were coming out looked beautifully cooked and prepared. Not just meat and two veg on a plate but prepared and cooked with style and panache with what looked like thin parsnip crisps on top. Now, we're not Sunday lunch types but I'll be going back for one shortly and hope that my expectations are met. Looks like there are various meat options including chicken I'm pleased to say as well as a decent veggie option also. By the time we left it was getting full so it seems this is already a bit of a success story and long may it last. Great attentive staff by the way and a really friendly, cheery atmosphere. My only disappointment (and not a complaint)......it's not open in the evening. However it's a small place with a small team and if they've been there since the crack of dawn serving breakfast then carrying on into the evening would not be viable as they would be well and truly cream-crackered.

Eight of us booked a table in the rear dining area overlooking the Bristol Dock waterway for what turned out to be a joyous occasion. The two owners of the business and their waitress could not have been more friendly, helpful and seemed genuinally pleased to serve us.The room had a very nice, comfortable home- from- home feel with an assortment of tables and chairs and a window which gave us plenty of light as well as the view. Some of us had starters from a well balanced menu and were large portions and delicious. The main courses were from a choice of roast sirloin beef, lamb, pork, chicken and, a new one for me, Rabbit! Most of us went for the beef that arrived cooked medium or medium rare on big dinner plates covered with roast carrots roast potatoes(proper Maris piper cooked in fat)three other veg and homemade yorkshire pudding topped with "real" gravy! There were five other dishes to choose from which looked very good as they passed me.Needless to say none of us had any dessert on offer! The wine list had a few of the usual suspects but their house red and white were excellant. The bill arrived and we couldn't believe it. The starters were an average of £5 (as were the desserts on the menu) and the enormous, perfect main roasts were £11.95.What a lunch. Brilliant.

I, and 6 or 7 others, have been here 3 times in less than a month for lunch during training sessions on the Bristol City Sightseeing buses. Until then I didn't know this delightful little haven existed. Each time we have had a pre-ordered 'ploughman's' served on a slate tile. Each time it has been different and each time it has been beautiful and filling. With 3 or 4 different cheeses, ham, large helpings of salad (and even that was different on every visit), plenty of bread and biscuits, we were excellently catered for. Nobody left hungry. The building is welcoming, as is the owner and hostess, Romany. Nothing is too much trouble and everything is done with a lovely smile. Even the toilets are decorated with Ordinance Survey maps which gives you something different to look at in the 'little room'!My only complaint is that, because the food is pre-ordered, I haven't been able to try anything else on offer.I will definitely be correcting that and very soon! If you are taking a walk around the Harbour (or even on the hop-on-hop-off bus tour) this is an ideal place to stop for a meal or even just a drink and a piece of one of their exquisite looking cakes. As we say in Bristol "Gert Lush, me babber".

Nothing out of a tin or packet here. The owner and her staff are most attentive and keen to please. A small cafe/restaurant with views over the harbour at the rear, we only popped in for a coffee and a cake on a Sunday but will no doubt return to try something else. The cake selection was unusual, no Victoria Sponge or Carrot Cake here, but my creamy concoction with apricot and honey was very pleasant. They were all displayed in a vertical cabinet next to the counter, and other menus were dotted around on various chalk boards. A drink of Hot Chocolate was perhaps slightly disappointing, being neither especially hot nor chocolaty. They missed out on a lot of custom since they stop doing breakfast at 12:00 on Sundays. Just in the short time that we were there three people came in and left when they couldn't get any. Understandable if they were packed with people having lunch perhaps, but there were only a couple of other tables occupied. The menu looked tempting though, with various options such as Full English, Eggs Benedict, Eggs Florentine and Smoked Salmon. Definitely one to return to another time.

Good choice of hot and cold drinks to accompany the food.We are always welcomed like long lost friends and the atmosphere is warm. It's like having a well cooked home Sunday lunch without having to cook it yourself!!Will we return again?? We certainly will.

What a find! Of all the places we might have popped in for brunch we made an excellent choice. The menu was varied and interesting, the food presented extremely well and the coffee delicious! They staff and owners were extremely helpful in adapting the menu to provide for a 5 year-old so that we all could have a filling and delicious brunch. It was so good we went back the next day for a late lunch before heading home. Thank you!

After finding out that The Pump House had stopped serving food at 2.20pm on a Saturday we found ourselves (at the suggestion of the PH waiter) heading further along the harbourside to find The Galley - and what a favour he did us!We arrived at the back door open onto the harbourside with a confusing sign saying the cafe entrance was round the front on Hotwells Road - but being rebels we took the back stairs!Having checked they were still doing foid (!) we ordered at the counter and took a table in the window at the back with a view out over the harbour. There were 2 other tables occupied. There were some very interesying photographs on the walls of local scenes. There looked to be a great choice on the menu. The waitress was friendly and attentive but did have to come back to check she'd correctly noted one of the three meals! We didn't have to wait long for the food which tasted fantastic (I had the burger). Given that they had come out of the fridge I would have expected my organic lemonade to have been colder but should have asked for ice. One of the 3 of us asked for water and got a glass for herself - maybe we should have each asked - or perhaps the waitress could have thought to see if we all wanted a glass or offered a jug? When we got the bill (maybe she had asked my friend if we were paying separately?) the waitress had separated it into three food and drink totals. The toilets are in the basement (where you might glimpse the tiny galley kitchen from where the food comes) but a word of warning - mind the step up as you open the first door! All in all a much better choice than The Pump House!

We were here for a vege breakfast. Coffee came almost immediately but it took awhile for the food to arrive. However it was well worth the wait! So scrumptious, we even missed parts of my boyfriend's triathlon just so we could finish breakfast :)

A lovely little place in a fantastic setting, hidden away on the waterfront on the Hotwells Road. The best Sunday lunch I've paid for ever! Classic food served with a twist, great flavours, vintage crockery and first class service. Food excellent value though beware of the over-priced alcohol drinks. Stick with soft drinks and the bill shouldn't be too much of a shock. Probably best to book.

Adamhaus (2nd June 2013) seems a bit confused: in the course of my work I use many different eateries and I always check if they do accept plastic payment. To just assume cards are acceptable is naive and suggests bad planning. What is puzzling is that he talks of looking for a cashpoint for about 20 minutes. If he had come out of the Galley and crossed on the pedestrian crossing the filling station has a machine albeit with a small charge. Return journey of three minutes. I don't think there is another machine within 20 minutes walk.. To the best of my knowledge the Galley has always had a sign making it clear that it does not take Visa etc. Even if I am wrong about that I still feel the prime responsibility is on the customer to be clear he or she has the means to pay.As a local resident I have welcomed the Galley as an asset to the area and I feel this is a mean-spirited attack particularly as Adamhus has scored it very well for both value and food. Did he actually make his feelings known at the time? Or is this something he has been bottling up?It is odd that in other reviews the Galley is praised for the standard of its bacon sandwiches and its roasts but Adamhus says the food is pretentious! Perhaps he should stick with Big Macs although I don't know if Macdonalds take credit cards!

Food is pretentious and not as good as they think. Cash only in the year 2012, and they don't tell you until you've already eaten, so that little 20 minute period where you finish your drink, digest your food and relax was spent walking around Bristol looking for a cashpoint. Ridiculous. There are plenty of places with amazing food who are queuing up to take my debit card.

This hidden gem never fails to impress; impeccable service; impeccable surroundings; everything home made and it shows. I have also used The Galley for private functions and external catering - it's all just brilliant. Try it. You won't be disappointed.

My friend and I visited The Galley for Sunday lunch and I can honestly say I think it’s the best roast I’ve ever had!The location is a short walk from Bristol city centre and lovely for a stroll around the harbourside/ docks area. The venue itself is kitsch and cool, displaying local art and having a laid back, cosy feel.We both had the pork belly roast and it was absolutely superb. The vegetables were cooked to perfection and accompanied by cauliflower cheese in a little dish so the sauce didn’t mix with the gravy! The potion sizes were great and very reasonable prices. There was a board displaying a lunch and evening menu, as well as a very tempting cabinet displaying home made sweets and cakes. I will definitely be back to sample more of the delicious food. I definitely recommend this venue – I really couldn’t fault it.

Went here after a recommendation off a friend and I was not disappointed. Great roast, great staff and huge portions and so cheap too! Loved it and will be going again.

I know the food is home cooked, fresh and locally produced where possible but I didn't expect homemade mustard too, which was delicious. I have taken various friends here for a treat and relaxation and they love it as much as I do. I have had the breakfast, which is fab, cakes, home made soups and all good. .The atmosphere is great and a good place to start on a harbour side walk.

We have been to the galley a few times now, every time we visit bristol in fact! The locals know this place well and the owner and staff are all very friendly and chatty. The food is so good with so much choice! They do a full breakfast all day as well as lunches with things on the menu like eggs florentine, herby veg sausage breakfast, beetroot falafel with tahini sweet chilli and yoghurt dressing with salad- great for me as I'm veggie but loads of meat options too. Now they do a Sunday roast alongside their usual menu with roast sirloin of beef, slow roasted belly pork, disionaise lamb chops or veggie nut roast with ALL the trimmings! Just go and see for yourself- you won't be disappointed!!

A recent addition to the Bristol Harbourside eating scene, Sunday lunches here are a far cry from the straight-out-the-freezer noisy mayhem of so many places that supposedly take the hard work out of the cooking. The Galley is reminiscent of another recent Bristol start-up (The Old Bookshop in Bedminster), in terms of decor and ambience - and also quality. Small is beautiful here also amidst the quirky bric-a-brac decor and relaxed setting, and the service is both personal and friendly. The food is also cooked to order and Sundays Roasts have a really pleasing attention to detail feel. Great cuts of meat (we had the Pork), fantastic roasties and Yorkshires plus veggies that were served up with a bit of brio and imagination. Generous portions and reasonably good value on the whole. There isn't much to criticise here. Our advice is to book in advance and be prepared for an intimate dining experience as you rub shoulders with the people of Hotwells (not ideal for young families and pushchairs) - after which The Galley will take the strain and set you up for the Sunday lunchtime experience that others simply can't give you.

Restaurants on this site come and go. Many start well and then fade. The Galley is still thriving after 3 months. The range of food and services is growing. The menu is increasingly seasonal - with hot comfort food for cold or grey days - Cumberland sausage and mountains of mash, venison burger and chips, or deep venison pie with loganberries plus minted potatoes or garlicky cavolo nero. Recently a very light salmon and pea pie, serious Welsh rarebit and hot beef open sandwiches were added to the menu. A greater variety of cakes (Victoria sponge, coffee and walnut, peach), flapjacks and brownies are on display. The Sunday roasts (beef, lamb, belly of pork) are now very popular. It's licensed and now has beer on draught.I liked it before, and now I like it even more!

My partner and I went there yesterday. Although we are living nearby I didn't go before as I was never sure about its opening times. 'Now established it is 9:00 to 5:30 six days a week and closed on Mondays.Food is excellent, service very good and prices reasonable. We will definitely go again to this slightly quirky joint where cups and saucers are not matching and are not meant to be. As to the food there is no amateurism; they know what they're doing and they do it well. Try the French toast. With the Galley at one end of Hotwell Road and the extremely grand Pump House at the other, it makes the area rather interesting.

We stopped in here with some friends for some food on a Sunday afternoon - we all had the full breakfast (although it wasn't an easy choice as the menu had many tempting choices) and were not disappointed. The food was obviously good quality - the sausage was one of the best I've had - and the breakfast included everything one would expect. The service was brilliant - friendly, genuine and enthusiastic about the food without being pushy/over the top (the array of condiments brought to the table was second to none). To top it off we had a table next to the window with views of the docks, plenty of newspapers /magazines to browse and good tea & coffee - perfect for a lazy Sunday. Hope this place does well, would recommend!

Beautiful steak and the best peppercorn sauce. Really enjoyed our food, delicious “Redfield” mess and wine. Service was perfect. Bit short on atmosphere as we were early diners.
