4 of us visited The Gaff last night for the Chef’s Table experience to celebrate my wife’s birthday. I must admit I was slightly trepidatious when we sat at the bar and were the only patrons in there. I needn’t have worried. As the restaurant filled up around us Chef Robert served up one of the best tasting menus we’d ever experienced. Every course was wonderfully unfussy, with a couple of dishes opting to make vegetables the star of the show, believe me - you’ve never had cauliflower like this. He was also a great host who clearly loves his craft and happily indulged my amateur interests in his cooking throughout the evening. All this was complimented by our American friend with a passion for Pauillac, the wine pairings were high quality, interesting but most importantly delicious. It is unbelievably good value for what you receive (£140 a head for 8 courses, 8 wines and service) and felt really special. My only thought as I exited into the cool April night, ‘I can’t wait to go back’.

Been to the Abergavenny Gaff based on a review in The Telegraph so visited the Bath site today. Great. It's not the cheapest place but the food is great, fresh and delicious. The wine list is extensive. I wanted a mocktail but there was only one on the menu BUT the lovely young man in charge made one up for me based on my likes, it was super! He also wrote out the ingredients for me to try at home. We will definitely be visiting again.

As the rating is on the whole experience, I dropped a star based on that, not the food alone which is 5 star. It is possible though that the fact we were there on a rare sunny afternoon of the year had an impact. There is no outside seating unlike the Abergavenny Gaff and you are actually seated below ground. In the hour or so that we were there, we were the only ones in the restaurant. Several people had a look from outside but didn’t go in. I felt a bit saddened by that but understood, had we not booked beforehand, I feel we would likely have done the same. The competition is fierce in the field of alfresco dining and without it on a sunny day, it’s a tough market. It is therefore all about the food and service but you need to get people through the door. Both of these are impeccable but as the only customers, they should have been. The food is excellent, surroundings tastefully decorated and staff friendly. Priced well in relation to the standard of food but more of a ‘treat’ than every day experience.

We were a table of four booked on a Friday night in February. It wasn’t too busy which worked out well for us as we were able to chat to the chef during the culinary experience . The restaurant managed to keep us fully engaged in the theatre and culinary show provided by the chef. The small plate menu was impressive and the suggestion was to have all the dishes, so we did! The numerous dishes that were served to our table were all exceptional and the anticipation of what was to come next was great. The mix of flavours and the technical skills that the chef delivered were very impressive. The food we tasted was very well presented and it was as though we had our own personal chef too. Such an interesting and enthusiastic chef to boot. Marvellous food, beautifully crafted and delicious. The kitchen looked amazing and perfectly designed and so clean , tidy and organised. It was a real treat and we will return

We took our friend's for a birthday celebration and this night from start to finish was incredible. We sat at The Chefs Table and had a 'ringside seat' for our incredible meal expertly cooked and explained by the Head Chef. This restaurant is a hidden gem not yet discovered by the masses but when it is you will struggle to get a table as it's 'That Good'. Give yourself a treat and go here for a wonderful experience. Epic Food!! Great for Meaties & Veggies alike!!! This is a great way to eat. 5 dishes for 2 people leaves enough room for dessert and you won't be disappointed. A fantastic selection of vegetarian dishes and the Bang Bang Cauliflower was outstanding... Never knew cauli could taste so good!! There is something for everyone. The Chef was exceptional and came for a chat after the meal, such a lovely guy. We polished off the meal with a wonderful bottle of Rioja. Would definitely recommend and if could give 10* I would.

We booked to have dinner at The Gaff following William Sitwell’s positive review. We had high hopes but found the experience to be very underwhelming. I hope this review can be understood as constructive feedback. The positives: - the waiting staff were attentive and polite. - some of the food was technically well-cooked (e.g. the hispi and the corn ribs). Where there is room for improvement: - as William Sitwell points out in his review, The Gaff’s setting and aesthetic is very much incongruous with the modern, small-plates vibe they’re trying to cultivate. The venue feels incredibly tired and uninspiring. Unfortunately, the setting of a restaurant does impact on the experience of diners. There are plenty of very atmospheric and charming dining spots in Bath, this is not one of them. - most importantly, the food was very disappointing. We shared three dishes, two of which were mediocre and one of which was A

Fantastic experience from start to finish… Eric (the main man) was more than accommodating in welcoming us in, despite being late off the train. Kicked things off with a cracking little ginger beer cider paired with a very indulgent marmite butter and fluffy bread. If you’re lucky enough to be close to action you’ll see Robert (head chef) putting some excellent small plates together. We opted for 7/8 small plates, which is the recommended protocol - safe to say-it was all top draw stuff, notably the Duck and Onion Tarte Tatin plate and Squash Gnocchi. Sadly, we didn’t have enough for any pudding - but seriously considering going back, despite only being here for a quick weekend away. Once again a massive shoutout to the friendly family feel you get when you walking - thank you Eric and team!!

I've always disliked William Sitwell finding him overly pleased with himself but now I dislike him even more having recommended this place. He is usually scathing so when I read his rave review of The Gaff in the Telegraph I| assumed it had to be good and was full of hope. It wasn't. The welcome was warm as far as hospitality was concerned but as there were just six of us in for lunch it felt rather soulless. The staff went to great lengths to explain the straightforward concept of small sharing plates and so we ordered. To start we had the spicy prawns. Weird on a sharing basis to serve three of them and I thought there would be a fight over the third but I needn't have worried. The prawns themselves had no flavour whatsoever and neither did the sauce. I imagine the finger bowl was more flavoursome. Bad start. We followed this with pulled lamb on a crumpet (not really a crumpet) with red cabbage. Slightly better but I wouldn't order it again. Pappy lamb on a pappy sponge. Third up was some spicy chicken which was the best thing we had. Nicely cooked; tender and juicy with a slightly spicy sauce. Lastly was a duck and pork cassoulet. Lacked salt and the pork was dry and a challenge to cut. The duck was sort of OK but by now we had run out of steam. Disappointed, we passed on desserts. The silver lining was that there is a great butchers/deli called Green Street just around the corner. We'll stick with Chez Dominique across the bridge for our go to place in Bath.

Another amazing meal at the Gaff! This was my third visit and this time with some family from out of town who were really impressed. We were an hour late for our reservation but the staff were lovely. We ordered one of everything from the menu, in hindsight that might have been slightly too much but it was all great. Highlights for me were the corn 'ribs' and the Hungarian lamb.

Obviously a very talented chef, couldn’t fault the food it was excellent. The small plates are difficult to share turning up at different times, would rather a normal menu. But, probably every chef likes small plates to show off their talent. The restaurant is tucked away, not a great location, no atmosphere, which is a great shame, and for that reason I would not return.

First visit, for my birthday, and pleased to report that it lives up to the reviews. The 3 dishes for £25 is great value - though small plates, they were more than ample. Everything was packed with flavour, my favourite being the whole plaice in brown butter. It wasn't the usual tiny fish with a teaspoonful of flesh, but a decent specimen. Plaice has such a delicate flavour, and serving it in this minimalist style is just perfect, with nothing to overwhelm it. My only grouch (and loses a star) is the form of serving. "Dishes do not come out in order - they are served when ready". This is entirely for the kitchen's benefit - not the diner. Consequently, I ended up with all 3 dishes in front of me at the same time. I explained to the waiter that I couldn't eat sufficiently fast as to ensure they didn't get cold, so he took the lamb away to keep warm, returning it when I was ready. The dish didn't suffer for it and was delicious, though the crumpet was rather heavy. Wagamama has a lot to answer for, starting this trend! I didn't find the service to be particularly warm, but it was efficient enough. We will definitely be returning here for the excellent food.
